Fluid inclusion and trace element studies of the gem pegmatites of Mt. Antero, Colorado

Kar, Adityamoy 13 February 2009 (has links)
The gem pegmatites of Mt. Antero, Colorado occur in an Oligocene granitic stock containing aquamarine, smoky, clear and milky quartz, phenakite, muscovite, fluorite, garnet, pyrite, topaz and calcite. Aquamarine and smoky quartz contain abundant primary fluid inclusions outlining growth zones, as well as numerous trails of pseudosecondary and secondary inclusions. Salinities and homogenization temperatures (Th) of these inclusions define five distinct groups. The earliest primary fluid inclusions occur in outer growth zones of gem aquamarines. These inclusions have salinities of 2.6 - 3.9 wt.% and homogenize at 350°- 360°C. The earliest primary inclusions in smoky quartz have salinities of 5.0 - 5.6 wt. % and homogenize at the same temperature as the primaries in aquamarines. Paragenetically later primary and secondary C02-bearing inclusions in aquamarine, and secondary C02- bearing inclusions in smoky quartz homogenize at 350°-360°C. Later secondary inclusions in smoky quartz define two distinct groups based on salinity and Th (Group 1: Th = 285°-355°C, salinity = 6.1 - 7.9 wt.%; Group 2: Th = 215°-245°C, salinity = 3.0- 4.3 wt.%). Salinities and Th's of very latest primary inclusions in aquamarine overlap with those of group 1 in smoky quartz. Homogenization temperature of latest primary inclusions in smoky quartz is 194°-213°C and salinities range from 0.5 - 2.0 wt.%. Secondary inclusions in phenakite and fluorite crystals homogenize at about 270°C and 215°C, and have salinities of 1.3 and 0.5 wt. %, respectively. The fluid inclusion data, combined with constraints from mineral equilibria, suggest that gem aquamarines formed at approximately 500° to 600°C and - 1 kbar from low to moderate salinity aqueous fluids (2.6 - 6.2 wt. %). The salinity increased during the final stages of aquamarine growth and initial stages of smoky quartz formation, reaching a maximum of about 8 wt. %. During later stages of smoky quartz formation and subsequent fluorite and phenakite growth the salinity continuously decreased. Calcite and the latest quartz crystallized from -0.5 wt. % solutions. The beryl crystals from Mt. Antero vary in color from dark to pale blue aquamarines to the essentially colorless goshenite variety with some individual crystals showing color zoning. Quantitative electron microprobe analyses showed that iron, which imparts the blue color to the aquamarines, is enriched in the dark blue parts of a gem crystal and comparatively depleted in the paler blue terminated parts of the crystals. Most of the aquamarine crystals showed evidence of growth zoning. Quantitative analyses and X-ray maps generated with electron microprobe show that iron and cesium are depleted in the cores of the beryls and enriched in the rims of the crystals. An exact opposite trend is observed for sodium and magnesium, which are depleted in the rims but enriched in the cores of the beryls. / Master of Science

Em torno da romã: aplicações de operações com contornos na composição / Around the pomegranate: application of contour operations in music composition

Sampaio, Marcos S. 28 November 2008 (has links)
Contours can be understood as the shape or format of an object. In Music contour can represent a parameter in function of another, like pitch in function of density or density in function of amplitude. Contours are important because, as well as pitch sets and motives, they can help giving coherence to a musical piece.Theories of contours have been used in areas such as Ear Training and Analysis, but the systematic use of contours for generation of compositional material is an issue still lacking literature. In this thesis I present the piece "Em torno da romã" [Around the pomegranate] and its analysis. This piece, for woodwind quintet, was composed using combinations of contour operations associated with parameters such as pitch, tempo, density and texture. In order to accomplish this task, I did a literature review of contour theories, I did a mapping of contours to musical elements, I composed studies of possibilities for experimentation with contours, I develop the Goiaba, a software to assist in processing contours for composition, and finally composed the piece "Em torno da romã".This study helps to advance the state of art of contour theories through composition contour operations experiments using contour operations and contributes with new tools to the composition field. My conclusion is that contours can be used in a systematic way in musical composition, but we still need further study. Thus this depth and continuity in development of Goiaba are possible future activities resulting from this work.

Differential processing of the direction and focus of expansion of optic flow stimuli in areas MST and V3A of the human visual cortex

Strong, Samantha L., Silson, E.H., Gouws, A.D., Morland, A.B., McKeefry, Declan J. 15 March 2017 (has links)
Yes / Human neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies have raised the possibility that different attributes of optic flow stimuli, namely radial direction and the position of the focus of expansion (FOE), are processed within separate cortical areas. In the human brain, visual areas V5/MT+ and V3A have been proposed as integral to the analysis of these different attributes of optic flow stimuli. In order to establish direct causal relationships between neural activity in V5/MT+ and V3A and the perception of radial motion direction and FOE position, we used Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to disrupt cortical activity in these areas whilst participants performed behavioural tasks dependent on these different aspects of optic flow stimuli. The cortical regions of interest were identified in seven human participants using standard fMRI retinotopic mapping techniques and functional localisers. TMS to area V3A was found to disrupt FOE positional judgements, but not radial direction discrimination, whilst the application of TMS to an anterior sub-division of hV5/MT+, MST/TO-2, produced the reverse effects, disrupting radial direction discrimination but eliciting no effect on the FOE positional judgement task. This double dissociation demonstrates that FOE position and radial direction of optic flow stimuli are signalled independently by neural activity in areas hV5/MT+ and V3A. / This work was funded by the BBSRC (grant B/N003012/1).

Firstly, the role of highway infrastructure investments in promoting the expansion of large monocultures, such as soybeans and corn, was identified. Then, the socioeconomic profile of the region of influence of the BR 158 Highway was characterized, encompassing demography, flow of employment, economic production, exports and imports of the cities, and other items. The study also verified the effects of highway infrastructure investments in the cities in question, in relation to small and medium-sized industrial and commercial segments. Lastly, it identified the goods that are transported and the highway support conditions from the perspective of truck drivers. The methodology used, which was quantitative and qualitative in nature, was supported by instruments, such as observation, interviews, document research and a literature review, with the data presented in the form of comments and tables. In assessing the economic and social impacts of the production changes in the Brazilian cerrado (tropical savanna ecoregion), as a result of highway infrastructure projects, the objective is to help explain the process of regional integration in Mato Grosso, in the current period, and chart it for the upcoming years, based on the infrastructure projects in question.

Mawa\'aiaká - school of cultural rescue: the trajectory of the school between Kamaiurá indians, from 1976 to 2004.

Carvalho, Jailton Nascimento 28 August 2006 (has links)
The research now proposed is a trial to begin a historiography of a school experience which is only starting: \"Mawa\'aiaká. Escola de Resgate Cultural\". It deals about the school project from Kamaiurá indians whose live in the Parque Indígena do Xingu in the Mato Grosso state. The embraced period (1976 - 2004) contains since the first built school in the Parque in a FUNAI Indian Station near to Kamaiurá Village till 2004 when the indians whose, until then refused to participate in the oficial projects accomplished there, developed your own project and constructed a school inside the village. After a presentation of the historical and anthropological context from the Alto Xingu zone and its introduction of Kamaiurá indians, we intended to collect speeches from the leadership, indians teachers in the village and other protagonists of this project in order to testify, based on school discipline\'s history and founded on the Change Sociology from Georges Balandier, that this people goes toward, through the direct control of the school and its path, a political position that improve your identity in relation with our society.

Ambient disturbances frequently produce changes in the structure of landscape and fauna diversity. Data about degradation's history, ambient structure and species have been collected in 30 forest fragments of different sizes in Alta Floresta and Apiacás towns, south of the Amazonia, to verify how Drosophilidae community answers to forest fragmentation. The results showed great heterogeneity between forest fragments; however diversity was similar between larger and best conserved and small with high degree of degradation. A total of 10.692 individuals of Drosophilidae, divided in 62 taxons, were collected. Relation between forest fragments size and species diversity was not observed. However, e opening of sub-forest was one of ambient variables that contributed the more to reduction of species diversity. Estimate of species richness for the region was around 100. The structure of abundance of communities was more similar between the forest fragments than species composition. About 34% of total richness was restricted to de forest edge and 19% to the center of the remnants; 47% of the species was common to both habitats. Some species of drosophilids answered to a distance gradient forest matrix-center. D. malerkoffiana, S. latifasciaefonnis and Z. indianus decreased their frequencies with the proximity of the center. On the other hand, the group willistoni increased in abundance. The main effect of the forest spalling on the community of drosophílids is the drastic alteration in species composition, with the matrix of the habitat being determinative in species composition of forest fragments.

Vivências e ressignificações do neopentecostalismo em Rondonópolis - MT (1993-2006)

Searching for setting relations with ampler processes lived in the scope of the contemporary culture, I try to realize by means of the neopentecostals narratives the complex processes of adhesion and religious transits that occur in the city. As integrant and active part of the culture, the religious experiences lived by neopentecostals are shared in the intercrossing of memories, traditions and in the directions and meanings that keep attributing the belief. These experiences interact and strains with cultural mediations that emerge of the narratives, as the previous religious traditions, personal and familiar yearnings and expectations, TV programs that spread the belief and the deriving demands that arise from the speeches and practical rituals. I dialogue with the narratives produced for believers and former- believers, from the procedures used for Oral History. I also use a set of other sources, as literature produced by the church, TV programs, speeches, and comments undertaken in cults, the objects and rituals realized in these cults, with the intention of understanding how the belief keeps on being lived and reworked. For this reason, I also dialogue with concepts as social experience, selective tradition, appropriation and cultural mediation, discussed by authors linked to the Cultural Studies Group, problem making interlocutions as necessary to the interpretative exercise. As religious and social process in formation, the action of the neopentecostals churches does not occur in a neutral and harmonic manner. It interacts and strains with other ways of believing and living faith, having an increasing space in media and politics, as well as disputing places for past and present meanings in the city / Neste trabalho analiso o processo de expansão, diversificação e vivência do neopentecostalismo em Rondonópolis, Mato Grosso, a partir da trajetória dos fiéis e ex-fiéis de duas denominações neopentecostais a Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus, presente na cidade desde 1993, e da Igreja Sal da Terra, denominação fundada localmente, em 1995.
