Multi-dimensional Evaluation Of E-learning Systems In The Higher Education Context: Empirical Investigations

There has been little research on assessment of learning management systems (LMS) within educational organizations as both a web-based learning system for e-learning and as a supportive tool for blended learning environments. This study proposes a conceptual e-learning assessment model, HELAM (Hexagonal e-Learning Assessment Model) suggesting a multi-dimensional approach for LMS evaluation via six dimensions: (1) system quality, (2) service quality, (3) information (content) quality, (4) learner perspective, (5) instructor quality, and (6) supportive issues. A survey instrument based on HELAM has been developed and applied to 374 learners. This sample consists of students at both undergraduate and graduate levels who are users of a web-based learning management system, U-Link, at Brunel University, UK and NetClass LMS at METU, Turkey. The survey instrument has been tested for content validity, reliability, and criterion-based predictive validity. The explanatory factor analysis shows that each of the six dimensions of the proposed model had a significant effect on the learners&amp / #8223 / perceived satisfaction. Confirmatory factor analyses used to assess the number of factors and the loadings of variables. The results of confirmatory factor analyses were overlapped with the proposed model. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) statistical analysis was used to validate the research model. The analytical results strongly support the appropriateness of the proposed model in evaluating LMSs through learners&amp / #8223 / satisfaction. Additionally, individual case results were presented with descriptive statistics, Pearson&amp / #8223 / s Product Correlations outputs. Findings of this research will be valuable for both academics and practitioners of e-learning systems. The presented statistical results highlighted the importance of supposing a multidimensional analytical approach for e-learning system success evaluation. The proposed model provided several implications for e-learning effectiveness evaluation.

An Analysis Of The Main Critical Factors That Affect The Acceptance Of Technology In Hospital Management Systems

The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology by extending the Technology Acceptance Model (Davis, 1989) in order to contribute the acceptance of Hospital Management Systems in hospitals. The study also aims to extend the TAM by adding external variables. Thereby the relationships between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and external TAM factors and how these relationships will affect the behavioral intention to use the technology will be determined. In this study quantitative research methods are used. Quantitative research comprises from a questionnaire which is tested in Turkish government hospitals by hospital personnel, physicians, nurses, technicians and administrative personnel. After collection of data from quantitative research the analysis of the data was conducted. The findings of the analysis gave the significant relationships between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, behavioral intention and external variables. In conclusion this study points out the effects and the compatibility of the critical factors of TAM on the user acceptance of Hospital Management Systems in Turkish hospitals.

Social Networking Sites Utilization For Teaching And Learning

The purpose of this study was to investigate students&rsquo / social networking sites (SNSs) involvement, students&rsquo / involvement of Facebook as course management system (CMS) in face-to-face course, students&rsquo / acceptance of Facebook, students&rsquo / motivations, students&rsquo / achievements, and their relationships. The study, used Facebook as CMS, was conducted in a private university with 42 participants in two different freshman courses. Maximum variation sampling was employed in selecting 12 students for interview. Mixed method was employed as part of an action-research approach. Both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods were utilized to thoroughly analyze Facebook use as CMS. Quantitative data were collected through three questionnaires about Facebook acceptance, motivation to the course and involvement of Facebook and course Facebook page. The qualitative data were collected through both individual interviews and discussion posts of course Facebook page. The quantitative data analysis consisted of descriptive statistics, and correlation analyses. Coding schemes were used to both find the depth-of-discussion posts and convert qualitative data into quantitative data. The results stated that students&rsquo / SNSs involvement, students&rsquo / acceptance of Facebook, students&rsquo / motivations, students&rsquo / achievements and their relationships were different according to the taken course. Possible reasons of the differences of utilization and engagement in the course activities were clarified in the study. Results support that students and instructors could benefit from Facebook usage in learning and teaching. Most of the participants believed the value of having CMSs in all courses. Moreover, they preferred Facebook as CMS to communicate easily, to increase their active participation and interactions in their courses.

Model Selection for Real-Time Decision Support Systems

In order to cope with the turbulent environments in digital age, an enterprise should response to the changes quickly. Therefore, an enterprise must improve her ability of real-time decision-making. One way to increase the competence of real-time decision-making is to use Real-Time Decision Support Systems (RTDSS). A key feature for a Decision Support Systems (DSS) to successfully support real-time decision-making is to help decision-makers selecting the best models within deadline. This study focuses on developing methods to support the mechanism of model selection in DSS. There are five results in this study. Firstly, we have developed a time-based framework to evaluate models. This framework can help decision-makers to evaluate the quality and cost of model solutions. Secondly, based on the framework of models evaluation, we also developed three models selection strategies. These strategies can help decision-makers to select the best model within deadline. Thirdly, according the definitions of parameter value precision and model solution precision in this study, we conduct a simulation analysis to understand the impacts of the precision of parameter values to the precision of a model solution. Fourthly, in order to understand the interaction among the model selection variables, we also simulate the application of model selection strategies. The results of simulation indicate our study can support models selection well. Finally, we developed a structure-based model retrieval method to help decision-makers find alternative models from model base efficiently and effectively. In conclusion, the results of this research have drawn a basic skeleton for the development of models selection. This research also reveals much insight into the development of real-time decision support systems.

<p><em>Knowledge has become one of the most important assets for companies nowadays. Knowledge Management (KM) uses organizational knowledge as a resource to make companies more competitive. Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) are gaining popularity, however, the failure rate remains high, with many projects not achieving their goals or being shut down early. KMS are often underestimated and treated as normal systems. IS practices do not cover certain aspects specific to KMS, aspects that do not show in other IS (e.g. socio-cultural issues). There are many studies concerning the KMS failures but they just focus on the symptoms and do not provide a solution to the problem. The goal of this master’s dissertation is to generate a preventive tool that will help the KM field. With The experience gained by working in a real KMS project within a textile agency in Sweden and relevant literature, an Information Systems Design Theory (ISDT) for KMS was developed. As some authors suggest, KM needs an ISDT of it’s own. An ISDT will guide practitioners through the process by restricting practices and features of the system to a more effective set. It will also encourage the academia to work on this theory for its improvement, completion, and validation</em></p>

Seamless design of energy management systems

The contributions of the research are (a) an infrastructure of data acquisition systems that provides the necessary information for an automated EMS system enabling autonomous distributed state estimation, model validation, simplified protection, and seamless integration of other EMS applications, (b) an object-oriented, interoperable, and unified component model that can be seamlessly integrated with a variety of applications of the EMS, (c) a distributed dynamic state estimator (DDSE) based on the proposed data acquisition system and the object-oriented, interoperable, and unified component model, (d) a physically-based synchronous machine model, which is expressed in terms of the actual self and mutual inductances of the synchronous machine windings as a function of rotor position, for the purpose of synchronous machine parameters identification, and (e) a robust and highly efficient algorithm for the optimal power flow (OPF) problem, one of the most important applications of the EMS, based on the validated states and models of the power system provided by the proposed DDSE.

Educational Software in Engineering Education

This thesis contributes to the quality of engineering education and the accessibility of education worldwide by promoting computer-enhanced teaching and learning. It uses the epistemology of John Dewey (1859-1952) and the action research methodology first advanced by Kurt Lewin (1890-1947). A mixed methods approach that combines qualitative case studies with quantitative research methods is used. In the first of three case studies engineering students working on their final degree projects participated. To elicit interaction, a learning management system (LMS) was used and the students were strongly encouraged to discuss various aspects of their work. The second case focused on the barriers to a wider utilization of educational software in engineering education. The case is delimited to lecturers at the School of Engineering at the University of Borås. The investigation focuses on the lecturers’ reluctance to use educational technology and the slow uptake of new pedagogical methods in engineering education. The third case study covers three subsets of participants. A course intended to improve lecturers handling skills and motivation to utilize educational software in a pedagogically sound manner was given in Cuba, Guatemala and Peru. The first case demonstrated that computer-enhanced collaborative learning can improve the learning experience and performance of engineering students. The second case showed that LMS tools that facilitate traditional methods are used routinely, whereas lecturers often refrain from using features intended to facilitate collaboration and the creation of communities of learners. The third case study investigated the use of a complete course package, with all course material and software contained on the same USB drive (LiveUSB Mediated Education, LUME). It is asserted that LUME can facilitate constructivist pedagogical methods and help overcome the reluctance of lecturers to utilize educational software in a pedagogical sound way.

Αυτή η διδακτορική διατριβή αφορά στην εννοιολογική και λειτουργική ολοκλήρωση των Συστημάτων Υποστήριξης Ομαδικών Αποφάσεων και Διαχείρισης Οργανωσιακής Γνώσης. Η προτεινόμενη προσέγγιση αποτελεί μια καινοτόμο προσπάθεια συγκερασμού και διεύρυνσης των δυνατοτήτων που παρέχονται από υπάρχουσες τεχνικές και των δύο παραπάνω επιστημονικών περιοχών, με στόχο τόσο την πληρέστερη κάλυψη των ολοένα αυξανόμενων αναγκών των χρηστών που εμπλέκονται σε σχετικά προβλήματα, όσο και την αποτελεσματικότερη αξιοποίηση της γνώσης ενός οργανισμού. Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τη διατυπωμένη ανάγκη για μια ολοκληρωμένη προσέγγιση, η διατριβή επιχειρεί τη σύνθεση αρχών και τεχνικών από διάφορα πεδία έρευνας, υποστηρίζοντας ότι η διαχείριση γνώσης και η λήψη αποφάσεων δε θα πρέπει να αντιμετωπίζονται ως χωριστές διαδικασίες. Προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση, προτείνεται ένα πλαίσιο ολοκλήρωσής τους. Αναγνωρίζοντας ότι σε αυτού του είδους τα περιβάλλοντα σημαντικό ρόλο παίζει η ενεργή συμμετοχή των ληπτών αποφάσεων στις διαδικασίες διανομής της γνώσης, η προτεινόμενη προσέγγιση προτείνει επίσης ένα πλαίσιο ενίσχυσης της συμμετοχής τους στις σχετικές διαδικασίες. Το προτεινόμενο πλαίσιο ολοκλήρωσης υποστηρίζεται από ένα πρωτότυπο εργαλείο λογισμικού, το οποίο αναπτύχθηκε στα πλαίσια της διατριβής. Στο προτεινόμενο εργαλείο, η ολοκλήρωση των διαδικασιών λήψης ομαδικών αποφάσεων και διαχείρισης οργανωσιακής γνώσης επιτυγχάνεται μέσω ενός Γράφου Συζήτησης, ο οποίος απεικονίζει το διάλογο που αναπτύσσεται μεταξύ των εμπλεκομένων στη λήψη μιας απόφασης. Ο βασισμένος σε επιχειρηματολογία διάλογος δομείται και αξιολογείται βάσει κοινά αποδεκτών Πλαισίων Λήψης Αποφάσεων και Μηχανισμών Αξιολόγησης. Οι λειτουργίες του προτεινόμενου εργαλείου, καθώς και η οργάνωση των σχετικών δεδομένων και γνώσης βασίζονται σε ένα πρωτότυπο μοντέλο οντολογίας, το οποίο επίσης αναπτύχθηκε στα πλαίσια της διατριβής. Η συνολική προσέγγιση υποστηρίζει και διευκολύνει τόσο την ομαδική λήψη αποφάσεων, όσο και την απόκτηση, εκμαίευση, επεξεργασία, αποθήκευση και διανομή της οργανωσιακής γνώσης. / Decision making is widely considered as a fundamental organizational activity that comprises a series of knowledge management tasks. Admitting that the quality of a decision depends on the quality of the knowledge used to make it, it has been widely argued that the enhancement of the decision making efficiency and effectiveness is strongly related to the appropriate exploitation of all possible organizational knowledge resources. Taking the above remarks into account, this PhD thesis presents a human-centred, multidisciplinary approach for the integration of Group Decision Support and Organizational Knowledge Management Systems. Towards this end, a conceptual framework that properly interweaves concepts, theories and practices from the Knowledge Management, Argumentation Theory, Decision Making and Multicriteria Decision Aid disciplines is first introduced. Acknowledging that in collaborative settings the decision makers’ active participation in the knowledge sharing processes is of major importance, the proposed approach also introduces a framework for the leveraging of their participation in the related processes. Furthermore, in order to functionally integrate the decision support and knowledge management processes, a software tool that fully supports the above two frameworks was developed. The core component of the proposed tool is a Discourse Graph that serves the visualization of the argumentative discourses taking place between the involved parties. In order to better support decision making, these discourses are structured and evaluated according to a set of commonly accepted Decision Making Frameworks and a set of Scoring Mechanisms that comply with broadly used Multicriteria Decision Aid models and techniques. Being based on a well-defined ontology model, the proposed approach enables the members of a group to collaborate and accomplish a common understanding. Furthermore, it facilitates the capturing of the organizational knowledge in order to augment teamwork in terms of knowledge acquisition, elicitation, processing, storage and sharing, thus further enhancing the decision making quality.

Dangų degradacijos modeliai ir jų taikymas Lietuvos automobilių keliams / Models Of Pavement Deterioration And Their Adaptation To Lithuanian Automobile Roads

Planning road maintenance and development activities, prioritizing road construction, reconstruction and rehabilitation works, performing project economic evaluations, forecasting road operation expenditures and road user effect always requires prediction of pavement behaviour. For this purpose models of pavement deterioration are used. Commonly they are integrated in more sophisticated computational systems, known as Pavement Management systems (PMS) and Highway Development and Management systems (HDM). The implementation of these systems started in Lithuania shortly after the Re-establishment of the Independence. This was triggered by the violent drop in financing of the road sector, forcing to change obsolete road management strategy and planning approach. The need for project economic evaluations, transport modelling and long term pavement performance forecasts grew up after Lithuania joined the European Union and this brought the opportunity for financing road infrastructure projects from the EU funds. At present only on the Lithuanian state road network the total value of implemented projects, justified by evaluations and modelling with PMS, amounts to about 500 million Litas annually. Any Pavement Management System is just as good as the models within it, used for pavement deterioration prediction. The performed test calculations show that prediction models, currently used for this purpose in PMS we have in Lithuania, are of doubtful accuracy and have to be improved... [to full text]
