Shaping School Culture: to Support Moving from a Targeted-Assistance to Schoolwide Title I Program

Coakley, Paul Edward 05 June 2013 (has links)
As budget belts tighten in the public schools today, more and more schools are moving toward participation in federal Schoolwide Title I Programs to most effectively meet the needs of struggling students. This study seeks to inform school administrators how best to approach this yearlong change initiative by both meeting the needs of the rigorous federal standards and facilitating a positive school climate for staff, students, and community. Using a Problem-Based Learning method, the purpose of this study was to research, develop, and validate a handbook for shaping school culture during a major school change project while creating or maintaining a positive school culture. The handbook was developed as a resource for principals, and will ultimately be disseminated to Oregon school leaders with the goal of improving the transition process from a Targeted-Assistance Program (TAP) to a Schoolwide Title I Program (SWP). Research and development (R&D) methodology (Borg & Gall, 1989) was used to develop and validate Moving to a Schoolwide Title I Program: The Path Principals Should Follow to Maintain a Healthy School Culture. The literature review and the researcher's experience in Title I schools provided the necessary information to build the preliminary product (prototype). Field-test reviewers used an evaluation rubric to measure efficacy, practicality, effectiveness, and impact on school climate for each section of the handbook. The handbook was reviewed by three groups: principals of Title I schools, Title I directors and coordinators, and Title I compliance officials. The handbook was then piloted by the principal of an elementary school that is currently making the transition from a TAP to a SWP. Changes in the school's curriculum and innovations in the classroom, even if they are beneficial to student learning, can be challenging to the health of the school culture. Research suggests that school culture is defined by rituals, expectations, relationships, curricular focus, co-curricular activities, decision-making processes, school requirements, and a sense of the "way we do things here" (Bower, 1966, p. 22). School culture directly impacts a school's social, emotional, and academic end results. Through conversations with educators across the state, it is evident that the transition is not always sustainable or fully implemented by all staff, and many times the efforts for change are overcome by resistance, and the momentum toward change is abandoned. The handbook promotes the idea that though collaboration, shared leadership, data driven instruction, and staff buy-in, the yearlong transition process is not only possible, but it can also positively impact a variety of aspects which make up the school culture in hopes of creating a sustainable change.

Transitional embedded instructions for manipulating physical objects

Bujak, Keith Robert 22 May 2014 (has links)
There has been much research on how people use instructional information to gain procedural knowledge. In the context of procedures involving physical objects, however, there has been little research on the role these objects play in conveying procedural information. This study investigated how people used instructions – presented as either images or text – to assemble various physical objects. Objects were selected that either comprised uniquely shaped or interchangeable parts. Participants assembled each object twice, randomly receiving either image or text instructions for each build. They then assembled each object without the instructions and made judgments about the order of the procedure from memory. Image instructions generally resulted in faster and more accurate assemblies as well as more accurate memory for procedural order. These results were found only for objects with uniquely shaped parts. An object comprising interchangeable parts was readily assembled with either instructional type. Although text alone failed to provide any advantages, the combination of images and then text resulted in more consistent mental workload, which might be beneficial in some operational contexts. These results provide insights about how physical objects influence the use of and knowledge gained from procedural instructions.

The recent past in Indiana : guidance and identification

Higgins, Steven A. January 2008 (has links)
Buildings of the modern period have traditionally been absent from most architectural surveys. Part of the reason for this lies in the fact that very few guides have attempted to provide meaningful and accurate terms for post-World War II buildings, leaving surveyors without any meaningful way to categorize such structures. The purpose of this creative project, then, is to provide an accurate and meaningful means of applying style and building form categories to post-1941 architectural resources. The creative project first examines major trends in the movement to preserve and, more specifically, to document recent past resources throughout the United States. Primary and secondary sources, both popular and professional, are examined to determine the most common and appropriate labels being applied to modern architectural resources. From this, an illustrated style guide for identifying modern Indiana architecture is created. The creative project then provides a statewide survey of post-1941 architectural resources with both photographic and written documentation as an illustration of how to apply the determined styles and forms. / Project narrative -- Catalog of recent past architectural movements. / Department of Architecture

This project aims to investigate the views of the researcher professors related to project management research financed with public funds. Specifically sought to know their reactions and expectations against the approval of the project, the key management practices, the difficulties to manage and the suggestions for improving this process. The methodology was developed, through a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and analytical cutting type cross study. The information obtained through semi - structured i nterviews were recorded and transcribed. The subjects belonging to the Campus São Paulo of the Federal University of São Paulo, were selected intentionally and raffled among registered researcher professors as coordinators of projects and sub - projects financed by FINEP from 2005 to 2015. We interviewed 10 researchers using the saturation criterion. The data was analyzed through content analysis technique. The approval of a research project results in a sense of appreciation, pleasure and well - being, even though carrying a number of concerns for the researchers, with emphasis on bureaucracy considered to be a crucial point for the resource releases. The researchers believe that this process demands planning, organization and accompaniment and it requires sta ff support with preparation to the standard rules and legislation. They report that they learned management in practice without specific training and a major difficulty is the delay in the fund liberation, which affects the research progress. They suggest new or improved administrative structure of support to management at the University, the hiring of technical support, the previous definition of the purchased equipment installation site, the creation of a supplier database for quick access, agility in research and the creation of mechanisms for greater recognition of the researcher's work. Considering that this study’s data collect was conducted prior to the publication of the Law 13,243 / 2016, we believe that some aspects worrying the very researchers of this institution may be minimized in the near future. We believe that with the results of this research and the feasibility of new recommendations of the Legal Science Framework Law, changes can be implemented, contributing to the creation of new practices within the institution and, consequently, for the improvement of processes management of research projects.

With the „development‟ of civilization, the image lost its natural character, which led to the configuration of a new system of symbols, from the ideogram to the rise of the alphabet, bringing about a break in the communication through images. However, with the advent of post-modernity and the advance of media culture a new concept has been established in society, a concept marked by the symbolic and by the proliferation of the image. Given the range of the theme „image‟ in the various fields of science, we delimit our analysis in terms of the religious imagination and the images contained in Teaching Manuals used in Religious Education (TMRE) from the platform of Gilbert Durand‟s symbolical hermeneutics. In this vein the research concentrated, initially, on enumerating certain theoretical presuppositions which guide and sustain the analysis undertaken with a view to strengthening its relevance in relation to the triad of the „religious imagination‟, the visual image and the teaching manual. The aim is to consolidate and collaborate with the development of research on religious symbolic representation, bearing in mind the thematic issue of the visual image in TMRE, in order to use it critically and creatively in educative spaces in schools. The findings of this research point to the guaranteed presence of the visual image in TMRE, above all in the genres of drawing, painting, photography and info-imagery, with the hegemony of photography. While the treatment of the image as an object of knowledge is outlined, therefore, as a codifier of religious symbolic representations, the predominant pedagogical use is illustrative. The general configuration of TMRE was structured on the basis of imaginary representation in the mystical-religious form, set within a theological and messianic conception of religion.

The pet food industry has grown over recent years and the Ministry of Agriculture Cattle Breeding and Supply published in 2003 the Normative Instruction nQ 1, to define Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for pet food manufacturers and processors. Food safety is an important aspect both for the animals and human beings. The specific legislations determined by the competent organizations are aimed to ensure the safe foodstuffs production. To verify the leveI of GMP deployment at pet food manufacturers, AL VES conducted a research in 2003 when he identified that 4 manufacturers, out of 15 sampled, had implemented GMP. Considering the implementation leveI found, the objectives of this thesis were: (a) to provide the pet food organizations, with the implementation mechanisms of the Good Manufacturing Practices, to enable them to comply with Norrnative Instruction nQ 1 and with the recommendations contained in the Manual published by Sindiraçõesl AnfaIl Asbram; (b) to develop a database with the GMP issues, to ease the self-evaluation processes and the intemal and external audits. To attend the GMP requirements, the proposed methodology is classified in 6 modules: Building and Installations, Equipment, Fumiture and Fixtures, Handlers, Production Flow, Quality Assurance System, Products Traceability, MateriaIs and .Raw Materiais. The documentation developed for the GMP implementation contain the Manual for Good Manufacturing Practices, Standard Operational Procedures - SOP, Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures - SSOP and Working Instructions - WI. Eight steps are shown for the GMP implementation, from project planning through maintenance and improvement of the GMP system. The database prepared was tested at 4 pet food manufacturers. With the methodology, the documentation and the database developed in this study, pet food manufacturers will be able to deploy the GMP requirements, optimizing the methods for the control and reduction ofhazards and the preventive actions, which will contribute to ensure the safety and quality ofthe manufactured products / Doutorado / Tecnologia Pós-Colheita / Doutor em Engenharia Agrícola
