Agudelo, Sandra Paola 04 1900 (has links)
This study emphasize the review of the communicative approach in the teaching Spanish as a foreign language manuals (ELE in Spanish), by referring to the ones used actually in the province of Quebec. From a historic perspective, the first preoccupation about the teaching and the acquisition of second languages appeared in the Antiquity. During many centuries teaching through mechanical structures ruled, but past the Middle Ages, other pedagogical plans saw the light. In the Spanish Golden Age, influenced by some thinkers such as Montaigne and Locke, these plans attempted to show that the formal study of the language wasn’t useful and that the apprentice needed a motivation. The 20th century has been characterized by the display of methodological propositions in the teaching of second languages, and this is how the direct method, the audio-lingual, the community language learning and the natural approach, among others, were born. In the middle of the 20th century, in Europe, a proposition was developed based on the communicative needs of the students, and what, in the beginning, was known as the notional functional focus, evolved and became the communicative teaching. This approach deals more with the use of language than with the linguistic knowledge, and its main objective is that the student-speaker develops the interpretative and expressive skills of the target language. Based on the relevant theoretical framework and the analysis of the manuals Nuevo ELE, Prisma y Español en marcha (levels A1-B2), we intend to verify the presence of the communicative approach in this manuals and demonstrate that in the activities known as “communicative”, we find different applications of traditional methods in the teaching of second languages, hence the communicative approach takes various propositions from other methods. Keywords: Spanish Second Language, Communicative Approach, Manuals Analysis, Nuevo ELE, Prisma, Español en marcha.

A Nação como possibilidade: imprensa e manuais didáticos na difusão da identidade nacional no Brasil oitocentista / The nation as a possibility: the press and didatic manuals dissemination of national identity in neneteenth-century Brazil

Leandro Burgallo Paim 23 September 2011 (has links)
The aim of this research is to investigate the written production relevancy of 19th century to the organization of Brazilian Monarchy. For this, based on studies produced by two writers with an outstanding involvement referring to this production, called as José Ignácio de Abreu e Lima, from Pernambuco, Brazil and Joaquim Manuel de Macedo, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, I intend to analyze the Brazilian elites with two expression means, which have been chosen by them as a way to promote the State and Nation construction. From Brazilian history didactic manuals and articles published in several Brazilian newspapers, I try to identify how Abreu e Lima and Macedo have used them in different times regarding to promote their own political projects and stand their point of view against their rivals, showing the importance of such productions as a public expression venue connected to the organization of Brazilian Monarchy.

Saberes em viagem nos manuais pedagógicos: construções da escola em Portugal e no Brasil (1870-1970) / Journey made by knowledge in pedagogic manuals: constructions of school in Portugal and Brazil (1890-1970)

Vivian Batista da Silva 20 January 2006 (has links)
The aim of this doctoral thesis is to analyze textbooks used in teacher education that dealt with issues of teaching. They are referred here as pedagogic manuals and began to be published in the same period in Portugal and Brazil. The first edition found is from 1870 and other were produced during the next century, when these books had significant changes in their content and materiality. In this period the manuals presented a synthesis of the best of the bibliography used by educators. Their goal was to initiate students in the teaching job, gathering, in an easy and accessible way, the fundamental references to the work. Organized in this way, this knowledge supported the ways in which school was conceived, because it explained the characteristics of the various elements of its culture, including not only the role of the teacher, but also the organization of the school, students tasks and the methods of conducing a classroom. These aspects became a kind of teaching grammar, that spread to many regions of the world. This grammar was thought as the only imaginable way of schooling. Such an expansion was linked to the national and international circulation of knowledge, which was produced in several areas and times, and was used by the education professionals to build their own propositions on teaching. The logics of these processes of production and appropriation of ideas were examined here using the metaphor of the journey made by the references, when they were used in different places and moments. In another words, we show that the knowledge traveled through the pedagogic manuals when they quote authors and ideas found in another countries. That\'s the reason why, in this thesis, the references found in the manuals from Portugal and Brazil were examined and compared: trying to understand which information was selected and how they were used to build representations on the school. So, the history of pedagogic manuals built in this work dealt with the ways they produced knowledge and contributed to diffuse the schooling model among teachers.

School District Bond Campaigns: Strategies That Ensure Successful Outcomes

Florence, Linda L. 23 May 2014 (has links)
When the polls close and the ballots are counted, the best sound is the roar of ecstatic cheering from delighted but exhausted campaign committee members. A bond campaign takes an inordinate amount of work, but the results are worth the effort when the campaign is managed in a systematic way. Districts can be successful bond recipients when they effectively market their schools to gain the support of their constituents. Public schools across the U.S. are in dire need of major repairs, remodeling, and rebuilding to meet the educational needs of students. Unfortunately, passing a school bond election is entrusted to school superintendents and other district leaders, who are often inexperienced and ill-prepared and have neither the time nor inclination to focus on tasks that take them far from their primary purpose of teaching and learning. Attaining voter support in a school bond election requires a thorough understanding of school and community issues. The literature review focuses on communication theory and research to garner support of school district's internal and external stakeholders. Communication is instrumental in passage of a construction bond election. This dissertation is theoretically grounded in problem-based learning and the research and development process. The tested product is a handbook for superintendents or other district-level administrators on strategies and practices that assist in passing a construction bond election. In the Preliminary and Main field tests, superintendents and other district leaders used the handbook in a workshop. Survey results provided summative data to assess the efficacy of the handbook and the workshop. Formative results also provided rich information to improve and revise the handbook and workshop.

"To Conceive With Child is the Earnest Desire if Not of All, Yet of Most Women": The Advancement of Prenatal Care and Childbirth in Early Modern England: 1500-1770

Glover, Victoria E.C. 01 January 2018 (has links)
This thesis analyzes medical manuals published in England between 1500 and 1770 to trace developing medical understandings and prescriptive approaches to conception, pregnancy, and childbirth. While there have been plenty of books written regarding social and religious changes in the reproductive process during the early modern era, there is a dearth of scholarly work focusing on the medical changes which took place in obstetrics over this period. Early modern England was a time of great change in the field of obstetrics as physicians incorporated newly-discovered knowledge about the male and female body, new fields and tools, and new or revived methods into published obstetrical manuals. As men became more prominent in the birthing chamber, instructions in the manuals began to address these men as well. Overall these changes were brought about by changes in the medical field along with changes in culture and religion and the emergence of print culture and rising literacy rates.

The power of character : Middle-class masculinities, 1800–1900

Tjeder, David January 2003 (has links)
This is a study of continuity and change in middle-class conceptions of ideal manhood. My theoretical cues are the notions of the male as an unproblematised and genderless norm, masculinity as homosocial, and George L. Mosse’s use of countertypes. Notions of passions, youth, and character were important throughout the century. If young men could learn to master the dangerous passions especially in the precarious period of youth, they would develop character. If men instead gave in to the passions, they would fall and become countertypes. Meanwhile, young men lived according to another notion, that young men should have their fling. The meaning of manhood also changed over time. In the decades around 1800, manhood meant to lead a life which would be beneficial to society as a whole. Another ideal, that of the man of the world, was founded on urbane manners as a tactic to further one’s career. By mid-century, the ideal of the self-made man came to the fore. The homosocial world of business was now seen as a good way to mould manly characters. In the last decades of the century, moralists criticized the sexual double standard and male sexuality. To remain chaste until marriage became a central mark of manhood. Autobiographers, however, reveal that to many men, Don Juan was a hero rather than a villain. The notion that men were genderless and that masculinity was not a subject of discussion cannot be sustained. Masculinity was indeed the subject of intense discussions. Meanwhile, neither moralists nor autobiographers shed critical light on married, adult men. The problem was how young men should best be guided into an adult position of legitimate power; that position of power in itself was not problematised. While most masculinities were homosocial, this was not exclusively so. Countertypes were more complex than what Mosse allows for. Men who had taken ideal manhood too far could be countertypes, and at times men endorsed ideals which meant unmanliness to moralists.

An investigation into the non-compliance of advanced life support practitioners with the guidelines and protocols of the Professional Board for Emergency Care Practitioners

Christopher, Lloyd Denzil January 2007 (has links)
Thesis (M.Tech.: Emergency Medical Care)-Durban University of Technology, 2007 xiv, 116 leaves / The Professional Board for Emergency Care Practitioners (PBECP), a division of the Health Professions Council of South Africa, regulates the scope of practice and publishes guidelines and protocols that advanced life support (ALS) practitioners are required to follow. These define an acceptable, standardised approach to each commonly encountered emergency. Non compliance with the guidelines and protocols regularly occurs, which could impact on the quality of care delivered and may result in further injury or death of the patient. This study investigated the reasons for non-compliance by ALS practitioners and explored how compliance could be improved.

Ahumada, Gladys P. 09 1900 (has links)
This memory aims to highlight the renunciation that suffered, and still do nowadays, the teaching of the pronunciation in the Spanish courses as foreign language (SFL), to reaffirm its importance and to defend the need for its integration in the classrooms. It is a fact that with the current communicative approach and with the different duties, the students acquire higher knowledge in written language but do not have very satisfactory results in their pronunciation. In addition, the teachers don’t count on the integration of pronunciation methods in their approaches, and the deficiency of this material is more than obvious. The current curricular designs did not integrate a natural form of pronunciation teaching in its methodological talks. The selection and analyzes of some IT teaching handbooks, that are currently use in the province of Quebec, confirms these deficiencies. In the last part of this work, we present a selection of exercises that we consider useful for the teaching and the development of pronunciation, including the elements supra segmentary in a real and communicative context and in an integrated way. Didactic of the teaching that pays attention to the formal language system, grammar and the lexicon, can also contemplate pronunciation teaching by using the same prospect. Important it is that this perspective should be integrated like an additional phase of the training process, and stop to be a matter to be passed by in the curriculums.
