Class acts : the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth earls of Crawford and their manuscript collections

Hodgson, John January 2017 (has links)
Throughout Victoria's reign, Lord Lindsay and his son Ludovic, respectively twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth earls of Crawford, created one of the largest private libraries ever assembled in Britain. The Bibliotheca Lindesiana included some six thousand manuscripts, which Ludovic sold to Enriqueta Rylands in 1901 for £155,000. The principal problematic that I address in this thesis is: Why did the earls of Crawford invest vast amounts of financial and cultural capital in this endeavour? In other words, what factors - both structural and specific - led to the formation of the library, what purposes did it serve, and what roles did its manuscript components in particular perform? Other questions include: How - and how successfully - did Lindsay and Ludovic maintain physical and intellectual control over the rapidly growing library? How did they position themselves within networks of connoisseurship and collecting in Victorian Britain? How was the formation of the Oriental manuscript collections connected with Lindsay's interest in racial classification and with wider racial discourses? And how did the library reflect and reinforce Lindsay's identity as a gentleman-scholar? Previous studies of this and other manuscript collections have adhered to an antiquarian, bio-bibliographical model, focusing on the detailed matter and mechanisms of collecting, rather than exploring the socio-cultural and epistemological contexts of their development. This thesis, by contrast, constitutes the first extended application of cultural theory to a manuscript collection, or indeed to any private library, in the nineteenth century. I combine close archival work with Bourdieu's concepts of field, capital and habitus to reveal the complex structuration and signification of the library, and to investigate the imbrication between the earls' personal agency and wider forces operating upon the library. My examination of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana has uncovered several key issues and themes hitherto unexplored in this or any other major private library of the nineteenth century. First, I argue that the reasons for the library's development reside principally in various forms of classification, which preoccupied Lindsay and reflected wider societal trends and taxonomies: the classification of libraries and the ramification of knowledge; Lindsay's deployment of the library to corroborate his and his family's social and cultural distinction (i.e. social classification); and an interest in racial classification, which reflected Orientalist discourses associated with imperialism. Secondly, while the dispersal of aristocratic collections in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries is a familiar trope, this study is the first to contextualize the decline of a private library within the struggle between the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie. Finally, this is the first examination of the impact of professionalization upon private as opposed to public libraries, revealing the tensions between amateur traditions and growing professionalism and specialization in the nineteenth century. I thus 'read' through the library some of the wider socio-economic and cultural issues operating in Victorian Britain and its empire.

Gospel of Matthew in a sixth-century manuscript family : scribal habits in the Greek Purple Codices 022, 023 and 042

Hixson, Elijah Michael January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to assess the extent to which the singular readings of a manuscript reveal the tendencies of the scribe who wrote its text by examining three related Greek manuscripts from the sixth century. The three manuscripts are all luxury copies of the Gospels' purple codices, so named because they are written in silver and gold ink on parchment that has been dyed purple. The manuscripts, Codex Purpureus Petropolitanus (N 022), Codex Sinopensis (O 023) and Codex Rossanensis (Σ 042), were all copied in the sixth century from a common exemplar. Chapter One introduces the three manuscripts. Chapter Two provides a history of research on scribal habits and singular readings, and it describes the method used in this thesis to determine both the validity of the singular readings method and the actual scribal habits of 022, 023 and 042. Chapter Three provides a preliminary assessment of each scribe by comparing scribal features in the passages extant in all three manuscripts. Chapters Four, Five and Six assess the scribal habits of 022, 023 and 042, respectively. In these chapters, perceived scribal habits are measured by a modified singular readings method to replicate the situation for each manuscript if it had no extant close relatives' the situation for most early manuscripts. Actual scribal habits are then determined by the places the scribe changed the text of the exemplar. Chapter Seven offers some concluding thoughts about the scribes, their exemplar and the use of singular readings to determine scribal habits. Appendix One presents for the first time an edition of the reconstructed text of the exemplar of 022, 023 and 042, where at least two of the three manuscripts are extant. Appendices Two, Three and Four are full transcriptions of the Gospel of Matthew in 022, 023 and 042, respectively. Appendix Five provides information on singular readings and corrections in 042 where it alone is extant of the three manuscripts. Appendix Six describes the codicological structures of the three manuscripts. Appendix Seven is a transcription and brief discussion of 080, a fragmentary of a purple codex dating to the sixth century. Finally, both 022 and 042 contain a series of secondary corrections made against a second exemplar, and Appendix Eight argues that the scribe of 042 was responsible for these corrections in both manuscripts.

Barbara Lopes Roma 02 September 2016 (has links)
O objetivo desse trabalho será examinar a dupla funcionalidade do ms. Français 2695) written around 1460 by the Duke René d\'Anjou (1409-1480) is noteworthy for synthesizing in a single work practices from princely court culture of the Late Middle Ages and the originality of combining textual and iconographic material in order to convey a message intended by the author. We opted for working with the codex in question due to the dissemination of documents by electronic means, by the uniqueness of the work and lack of modern editions. Medieval manuscripts are objects focus of different research fields, which leads us to narrow the scope of our work to textual analysis from our paleographic transcription. The aim of this study is to examine the dual functionality of the ms. Fr. 2695 through discourse analysis. Through qualitative and quantitative examination of the lexical corpus, and the comparison with external sources, first we will investigate the function of the codex to record the practice of the tournament, and then establish how the fight would be devised by the Duke and how far was from current practice. Second, we will try to decipher the influence of courtly, knightly and princely literature within the treatise in order to determine the ideological construction to persuade the reader to adopt a certain behavior in society.

Contribution au catalogage dynamique des manuscrits arabes anciens numérisés / Contribution to dynamic cataloguing of the old Arabic digitized-manuscripts

Soualah, Mohamed 27 November 2015 (has links)
Arabic manuscripts are a very important source of information. Three million of them are scattered throughout the world. Nowadays, a real awareness rises throughout the world to preserve the old manuscripts. Many digitization projects of old Arabic manuscripts were implemented. But, is this sufficient for the manuscripts preservation? The main goal is the massive diffusion of these resources, because nothing is better preserved than a shared resource. However, it is necessary to make them accessible.Libraries are the most suitable places for storing manuscripts. They have developed an interesting tool for the manuscripts online access: It is about a catalogue, a simple and intuitive user support.the whole of the manuscripts are listed throughout a non-standardized cataloging protocol, which differ from an institution to another, but most of them use standard entries like the "Author", "title" and "subject".The problematic is about finding a way how to help a cataloguer who struggle alone to catalog the manuscripts, which present several problems concerning their state and their calligraphy? Therefore, the answer will be about how to make it.Thus, first we are asked to find a best way to access images of the digitized Arabic manuscripts. Indeed, we can quote three methods to access digitized manuscripts:• The first one consists of accessing to manuscripts in image mode. This is done by images processing with using of suitable indexing tools.• The second one aim to fully convert the manuscript into a text mode, then the manuscript will be processed as textual document. Thus, the information retrieval will be used.• The third solution uses an effective library tool which is the catalogue. The principle of this solution is basic. First, the user makes his query to the catalogue. The latter displays the results, and then the user selects the suitable one.The goal of our research is not to make choice between these three methods to access to digitized manuscripts. Our objective is to use these methods, evaluate them in order to optimize the online access to digitized Arabic manuscripts......

Gil Abellán, Mª Carmen 11 December 2004 (has links)
The Thesis entitled "The Historia evangelica from Iuvencus in the Faustino Arévalo's edition" studies the text published by Arévalo of the latin-christian poet.

Hernández Mayor, Mª Dolores 20 January 2006 (has links)
The Thesis entitled "Contributions from Faustino Arévalo to the edition of Sedulius" studies the poet Sedulius' text edited by Arévalo, specifically, the commentary -Scholia- to the first book of Carmen Paschale. After presenting the humanist's biography, describing the edition and studying Arévalo's literary tradition, the biography and Sedulian literary production are studied taking Arévalo's Prolegomena as a starting point. It follows a description of the manuscripts, editions and Sedulian commentaries. The emendatio is studied by means of a series of tables from uariae lectiones, apart from dealing with questions such as glosses or chapter titles. The presence of a large number of parallelisms is an example of the value of that criterion in the text determination. The explanatio focuses on matters of poetic metre. Finally, there is an assesment of the contributions to this edition and its survival, including Appendixes and a summary in Italian.
