Dinâmica hormonal durante o processo luteolítico nas espécies equina e bovina; com ênfase sobre o papel da prolactina / Hormonal dynamics during the luteolytic period in equine and bovine species; with emphasis on the role of prolactin

O presente estudo visou caracterizar a secreção de PRL e estudar suas interrelações com a PGFM durante a pré-luteólise, luteólise e pós-luteólise em éguas (Experimento 1); avaliar o efeito da inibição de PRL e PGF2α na luteólise e definir a sincronia entre PRL e PGFM em novilhas (Experimento 2); definir a sincronia entre PRL e PGFM em éguas (Experimento 3); e avaliar a constante estimulação da PRL durante o ciclo estral em éguas (Experimento 4). No experimento 1 em éguas, amostras de sangue foram coletadas durante as 24 h da préluteólise, luteólise e pós-luteólise. As concentrações de PRL e PGFM foram rítmicas, sendo a duração dos pulsos de PRL de 5 h, com intervalos de 7,5 h entre pulsos e 12 h entre picos. Durante a luteólise e pós-luteólise, os pulsos de PRL foram mais proeminentes, as concentrações de PRL durante um pulso de PGFM foram maiores no pico de PGFM e notouse uma maior sincronia entre picos de PRL e PGFM. No experimento 2 em novilhas, as secreções de PRL e PGF2α foram inibidas durante a luteólise. A inibição da PRL associou-se a maiores concentrações de P4 e LH, sem efeito sobre a PGFM. Entretanto, a inibição da PGF2α associou-se a uma queda nas concentrações de PRL. A mensuração da área do CL mostrou-se eficiente em detectar a luteólise. No experimento 3 em éguas, no verão e outono, inibiu-se a secreção de PGF2α e PRL no Dia 14. As concentrações de PGFM foram reduzidas com a inibição de PGF2α, mas não com a inibição da PRL. No verão, a inibição tanto de PRL quanto de PGF2α reduziu as concentrações de PRL. As concentrações de PGFM não diferiram entre o verão e o outono, enquanto que as concentrações de PRL foram menores no outono. No experimento 4 em éguas, estimulou-se a secreção de PRL a cada 8 h. Amostras de sangue foram coletadas a cada 12 h do Dia 13 até a ovulação e a cada hora por 12 h no Dia 14. A estimulação repetida da PRL não aparentou manter as concentrações de PRL elevadas após o Dia 14. Nas amostras a cada hora, concentrações de PRL atingiram um valor máximo 4 horas após a estimulação e os pulsos de PRL foram aumentados. O aumento na PRL não afetou a PGFM, P4 e fluxo sanguíneo do CL. Entretanto, a estimulação da PRL quebrou a sincronia entre PGFM e PRL. Estão contidos nessa dissertação o primeiro relato em éguas sobre a caracterização e ritmicidade de pulsos de PRL, sincronia entre pulsos de PRL e PGFM e maior atividade da PRL durante a luteólise e pós-luteólise. A inibição da PRL interferiu na secreção de P4 em novilhas, mas foi confundida pelo aumento de LH. A sincronia entre pulsos de PGFM e PRL representa um efeito positivo da PGF2α sobre a PRL, tanto em éguas quanto em novilhas. / The aim of the present study was to characterize the PRL secretion and study the relationship between PRL and PGFM during preluteolysis, luteolysis and postluteolysis in mares (Experiment 1); evaluate the effect of PRL and PGF2α inhibition on luteolysis and define the synchrony between PRL and PGFM in heifers (Experiment 2); define the synchrony between PRL and PGFM in mares (Experiment 3); and evaluate the frequent stimulation of PRL during the estrous cycle in mares (Experiment 4). On experiment 1 in mares, blood samples were collected during the 24 h of preluteolysis, luteolysis and postluteolysis. Concentrations of PRL and PGFM were rhythmic. Prolactin pulses had 5h of duration, interval of 7,5 h between pulses, and 12 h between peaks. Pulses of PRL were more prominent during luteolysis and postluteolysis. Concentrations of PRL during PGFM pulses differ during luteolysis and postluteolysis, and were greater at the peak of PGFM. The synchrony between peaks of PRL and PGFM was greater during luteolysis and postluteolysis. On experiment 2 in heifers, the secretion of PRL and PGF2α were inhibited during luteolysis. The PRL inhibition was associated with greater concentrations of P4 and LH. The inhibition of PGF2α was associated with a decrease on PRL concentrations, but no effect on PGFM was observed after PRL inhibition. The CL area measurement was an efficient method to target luteolysis. On experiment 3 in mares, in summer and autumn, secretion of PGF2α and PRL were inhibited on Day 14. The inhibition of PGF2α reduced PGFM concentrations. No effect on PGFM was observed after PRL inhibition. Concentrations of PGFM were not different between summer and autumn, and PRL concentrations were low in the autumn. In the summer, PRL inhibition reduced PGF2α concentrations. On experiment 4 in mares, PRL was stimulated every 8 h. Blood samples were collected every 12 h from Day 13 to ovulation, and every hour for 12 h on Day 14. The frequent stimulation on PRL did not appear to maintain higher concentrations of PRL after Day 14. On hourly samples, concentrations of PRL reached maximum value 4 h after stimulation and pulses of PRL were increased. The increase on PRL did not affect PGFM, P4, and blood flow of the CL. The synchrony between PGFM and PRL was partially disrupted by PRL stimulation. This was the first report on characterization and rhythm of PRL pulses, synchrony between PRL and PGFM pulses, and greater PRL activity during luteolysis and postluteolysis. The inhibition of PRL interfered with P4 secretion in heifers, but was confounded by the LH increase. In mares and heifers, the synchrony between PGFM and PRL pulses represents a positive effect of PGF2α on PRL.

Cèl·lules mare mesenquimals humanes: aïllament, caracterització i potencialitat per a la regeneració cardíaca

La insuficiència cardíaca congestiva és una epidèmia creixent a nivell mundial. Les causes principals de la insuficiència cardíaca estan relacionades amb el dany irreversible que resulta d'un infart de miocardi. El cor humà té una capacitat de regeneració limitada, i la pèrdua de múscul, juntament amb la contracció i la fibrosi de la cicatriu miocàrdica, posen en joc un conjunt d'esdeveniments anomenats remodelat ventricular, que finalment tendeixen cap a una insuficiència cardíaca congestiva. En l'actualitat no hi ha cap tractament o procediment clínic, amb excepció del trasplantament cardíac, que substitueixi la cicatriu de l'infart per teixit contràctil funcional. Recentment, la identificació de diferents tipus de cèl·lules mare capaces de contribuir a la regeneració dels teixits ha generat un notable interès en la possibilitat que la teràpia cel·lular pugui ser utilitzada per reparar el miocardi danyat (cardiomioplàstia cel·lular). No obstant això, es desconeix encara quin és el tipus cel·lular ideal per a la cardiomioplàstia cel·lular.Tradicionalment, es pensava que les cèl·lules mare pròpies d'un teixit adult només podien diferenciar-se cap a cèl·lules del teixit d'origen. Recentment, però, un conjunt d'estudis han demostrat que les cèl·lules mare adultes poden diferenciar-se cap a llinatges diferents als del seu teixit d'origen exhibint una plasticitat que ha estat anomenada transdiferenciació. Les cèl·lules mare mesenquimals són unes cèl·lules no hematopoètiques que típicament s'han aïllat del moll d'os però que més endavant s'ha demostrat que resideixen virtualment en tots els teixits. La seva accessibilitat, capacitat proliferativa, potencial de diferenciació i perfil immunològic fan que les cèl·lules mare mesenquimals adultes siguin un candidat principal per l'aplicació en teràpia regenerativa.En aquesta tesi hem aïllat i estudiat tres tipus de cèl·lules mare d'origen mesenquimal de tres teixits diferents, el moll d'os, el teixit adipós subcutani i el teixit adipós epicàrdic. Tots ells s'han caracteritzat in vitro i se n'ha estudiat la velocitat de creixement, la seva expressió de marcadors de superfície i la seva capacitat pluripotencial vers els llinatges adipogènic i osteogènic. La recerca en aquesta tesi però, s'ha centrat en el seu potencial per a la regeneració cardiovascular. Per aquest motiu es va estudiar el potencial cardiomiogènic mitjançant l'anàlisi de l'expressió basal de marcadors característicament cardíacs i la seva capacitat de diferenciació cap a cardiòcits. Dels resultats obtinguts en aquesta primera fase in vitro vam concloure que les cèl·lules progenitores derivades de greix epicàrdic (epiATPC), unes cèl·lules no descrites fins ara, eren el candidat cel·lular ideal per a l'estudi del seu potencial de regeneració del miocardi infartat in vivo. Per aquest motiu, es va estudiar l'efecte de les epiATPC trasplantades en dos models animals d'infart de miocardi en els quals es va observar una notable millora del miocardi infartat a nivell histològic i de funció. En conclusió, les epiATPC són una font cel·lular alternativa per a la cardiomioplàstia cel·lular, com ho demostra la seva capacitat de diferenciació cap a cardiòcit i cèl·lula endotelial, així com la millora de la funció cardíaca observada en els dos models d'infart agut de miocardi estudiats en aquest treball. / Congestive heart failure is a growing epidemic worldwide. The main causes of heart failure are related to the irreversible damage that results from a heart attack. The human heart has a limited capacity for regeneration, and loss of muscle, along with contraction and fibrosis of the myocardial scar, put into play a series of events known as ventricular remodelling, which ultimately tend to congestive heart failure.At present there is no treatment or clinical procedure, with the exception of heart transplant, to replace the scar tissue for a viable tissue with contractile function. Recently, the identification of different types of stem cells capable of contributing to the regeneration of tissues has generated a significant interest in the possibility that cell therapy can be used to repair the damaged myocardium (cellular cardiomyoplasty). However, it is not known yet which cell type is ideal for the cellular cardiomyoplasty.Traditionally, it was thought that stem cells of an adult tissue could only differentiate itself into cells types of the tissue of origin. Recently, however, a number of studies have shown that adult stem cells can differentiate itself into different lineages of their tissue of origin displaying a plasticity that has been called transdifferentiation. Adult mesenchymal stem cells are a non-haematopoietic cells that typically have been isolated from the bone marrow but was later shown to reside in virtually all tissues. Its accessibility, proliferative capacity, potential for differentiation and immunological profile makes adult mesenchymal stem cells a primary candidate for the application in regenerative therapy.In this thesis we isolated and studied three types of stem cells of mesenchymal origin from three different tissues, bone marrow, subcutaneous fat and epicardic adipose tissue. All of them have been characterized in vitro and has studied the rate of growth, their expression of surface markers and their capacity towards the adipogenic and osteogenic lineages. Research in this thesis however, has focused on the potential for cardiovascular regeneration. That is why we studied the cardiomyogenic potential by analyzing the expression of basal characteristically cardiac markers and their ability to differentiate into cardiomyocytes. Based on the results obtained in this first phase in vitro we conclude that epicardial fat progenitor cells (epiATPC), a stem cell type not reported until now, were the ideal cell type for the study of their potential to regenerate myocardial infarction in vivo. For this reason, we studied the effect of epiATPC transplanted in two animal models of myocardial infarction in which there was a remarkable improvement of the infracted myocardium at histological and functional levels.In conclusion, epiATPC are an alternative cell source to cellular cardiomyoplasty, as demonstrated by their ability to differentiate into cardiomyocytes and endothelial cells, as well as the improvement of cardiac function observed in the two models of acute myocardial infarction studied in this work.

I fokus för denna uppsats ligger främlingskapets problematik i två barndomsskildringar, Walter Ljungquists Källan (1961) och Mare Kandres Aliide, Aliide (1991). Analysen kretsar kring följande frågor: Hur konstrueras barnets främlingskap i båda berättelserna från två skilda tider? På vilket sätt präglar författarnas filosofiska och estetiska insikter den litterära bilden av barnets främlingskap? Vilka olikheter och likheter finns i de två gestaltningarna av barnets främlingskap i förhållande till den andre och till sig själv? Med utgångspunkten i existentiella, psykoanalytiska och antroposofiska perspektiv bildar jag mig en uppfattning om främlingskapets ursprung och dess filosofiska betydelse i olika teoretiska diskurser. / <p>Denna masteruppsats kan vara intressant för alla litteraturvetare som använder psykoanalysen som en teoretisk nyckel. Analysens komparativa karaktär kan även betraktas som en personlig insats i den komparativa litteraturvetenskapen.</p>

EFFECTS OF FESCUE HERBICIDES PLATEAU® AND CIMARRON® ON PREGNANCY MAINTENANCE IN BROODMARES AND ON ALKALOID CONCENTRATIONS IN ENDOPHYTE INFECTED TALL FESCUE

Ingestion of endophyte infected (E+) fescue by pregnant mares can cause significant reproductive problems. Plateau® and Cimarron® herbicides suppress fescue while leaving desired forages unharmed. To determine if these herbicides are harmful to pregnant mares, they were allowed to graze pastures treated with Plateau®, Cimarron®, or vehicle carrier. Pregnancies were monitored via ultrasonography, blood chemistry, and hematology. Of the components measured only creatinine differed among treatments over time (P=0.0003) and that increase was only significant in one of four studies. Two additional experiments were conducted to determine the effect of the herbicides on alkaloids within E+ fescue. A greenhouse experiment utilizing 52 pots of E+ fescue treated with Plateau®, Cimarron®, or nothing was inconclusive, as some alkaloids increased while others decreased. These results indicated that UV light may be required for normal plant death. In a field experiment 12 plots of mixed vegetation were sprayed with the same treatments, and herbicides decreased ergovaline, N-formylloline, and lysergic acid content (P=0.0460, P=0.0324, P=0.0093 respectively). In conclusion, the herbicides did not alter blood components outside physiological norms, but the alkaloids were still present in dying E+ fescue. It may be safest to remove late gestation mares until E+ fescue is completely decayed.

Interactive Roles of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone and RF-Amide Related Peptide 3 in Adenohypophyseal Physiology and Reporduction in the Mare

The seasonal termination of ovarian cycles in mares initiated near the time of the autumnal equinox is a significant managerial issue for horse breeders world-wide. Studies presented herein had two over-arching aims. In Aim I, objectives were to develop the principals needed to apply gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) therapeutics for routinely establishing pregnancies in the winter anovulatory mare. We first tested the hypothesis that continuous administration of native GnRH, beginning in either early February or March, would induce ovulation without reversion to an anovulatory state following treatment withdrawal. Continuous 28-d treatments elevated circulating luteinizing hormone (LH) and stimulated spontaneous ovulation much earlier than controls. However, mares treated only in February ceased ovarian cycles at termination of treatment. In contrast, mares administered GnRH in March continued to exhibit estrous cycles. Thus, we concluded that GnRH treatment must continue through March to ensure continued escape from winter anovulation. We then tested the hypothesis that the Julian day of conception could be accelerated in winter anovulatory mares treated continuously with native GnRH for 56 d beginning on February 1. Indeed, GnRH treatment caused a marked increase in the frequency of pregnancy compared to controls. Data illustrated that continuous administration of native GnRH is a practical and highly efficient option for managing seasonal anovulation. In Aim II, we examined hypothalamic distribution, adenohyphyseal receptor gene expression, and ligand functionality of RFRP3 in the mare during the breeding and non-breeding seasons. Hypothalamic RFRP3 mRNA was detected in the mare; however, neither hypothalamic expression of RFRP3 nor its anterior pituitary receptor differed between reproductive states. We then used equine adenohypophyseal cell culture to test the hypothesis that RFRP3 reduces the responsiveness of the equine gonadotrope to GnRH. Addition of RFRP3 to cell culture failed to counter the effects of GnRH. Finally, the effects of a RFRP3 receptor-signaling antagonist (RF9) were examined in winter anovulatory mares. A robust increase in circulating concentrations of LH relative to controls was observed in response to RF9 treatments, but treatments had no effect on adenohypophyseal responsiveness to GnRH. Data provide indirect evidence that antagonism of the RFRP3 system by RF9 may be at the GnRH neuronal level.

A modelagem foi organizada em três módulos: i)Cálculo do campo de ondas utilizando um modelo de refração-difração baseado na Aproximação Parabólica da Equação do Declive Suave (Kirby,1986); ii)Cálculo do campo de forças induzido pelas ondas na massa d'água a partir dos gradientes de tensão de radiação (Longuet-Higgins, 1970a, b); iii)Cálculo das correntes (médias na coluna d'água e no período) e da elevação (média) da superfície resultantes da ação do campo de forças determinado no item (ii) através de um modelo de circulação 2D-H (Martins,1992). Para testar a metodologia e avaliar a qualidade dos resultados comparou-se os dados de um experimento de laboratório realizado no Laboratoire d'Hidraulique de France-LHF no qual ondas monocromáticas incidem perpendicularmente sobre um quebra-mar localizado numa praia plana e uniforme, e que contemplou medições detalhadas dos parâmetros de interesse. Os resultados obtidos pela presente metodologia reproduziram de forma satisfatória as medições de laboratório bem aqueles apresentados por outros modelos.

Avaliação de novos protocolos visando induzir e sincronizar a ovulação em éguas /

A fim de reduzir custos e otimizar seus resultados, esta dissertação teve como objetivos avaliar o efeito de novos protocolos sobre a indução e sincronização de ovulação, grau de edema endometrial, bem como taxa de desenvolvimento e diâmetro folicular. Foram utilizadas 145 éguas da raça Campolina, entre três e 14 anos, em dois Haras de Conselheiro Lafaiete - MG, Brasil. Na presença de um folículo ≥30mm e de edema endometrial, no mínimo, grau 2 (0-5), as éguas foram randomicamente separadas em grupos e tratadas no dia seguinte (Hora 0) com: 1,0mg de deslorelina (I.M.) (G1; n=20); 0,5mg de deslorelina (I.M.) (G2; n=20); 2.000UI de hCG (I.V.) (G3; n=20); 750UI de hCG (I.V.) (G4; n=20); 1,0mg de deslorelina (I.M.) e 2.000UI de hCG (I.V.) (G5; n=15); 0,5mg de deslorelina (I.M.) e 750UI de hCG (I.V.) (G6; n=10); 10,0mg de ECP (I.M.) (G7; n=10) e, por fim, 1,0mg de deslorelina (I.M.), após pré-tratamento com 10,0mg de ECP (I.M.) no dia anterior (G8; n=10). Vinte éguas não foram tratadas, utilizadas como controle (GC; n=20). As avaliações ultra-sonográficas diárias foram conduzidas até a ovulação (D0) ou Hora 120, o que ocorresse primeiro. A análise estatística valeu-se do Statistical Analysis System (SAS). A taxa de ovulação entre 24 e 48 horas da indução nos grupos G1 ao G6 foi similar estatisticamente, maior ou igual a 75%. No G7, esta foi de 20%, inferior (P<0,01) à obtida no G1 ao G6. Verificou-se taxa de 40% no G8, menor (P<0,01) que a do G5 e G6 (de 100%) e similar aos demais. O ECP não foi capaz de induzir ou sincronizar as ovulações. Não houve benefício do pré-tratamento com ECP em éguas induzidas com deslorelina. O edema endometrial foi maior na Hora 0 em comparação ao momento em que a ovulação ... In order to reduce costs and optimize their results, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of new treatment protocols on ovulation induction and synchronization, endometrial edema as well as follicular diameter and development rate. One hundred and forty-five Campolina breed mares, aging three to 14 years, from two Studs in Conselheiro Lafaiete - MG, Brazil, were used. Prostaglandin-induced estrous mares showing one follicle ≥30mm and at least grade 2 (0-5) endometrial edema were randomly assigned to different groups and treated, at the following day (Hour 0), with either: 1.0mg of deslorelin (I.M.) (G1; n=20); 0.5mg of deslorelin (I.M.) (G2; n=20); 2.000UI of hCG (I.V.) (G3; n=20); 750UI of hCG (I.V.) (G4; n=20); 1.0mg of deslorelin (I.M.) and 2.000UI of hCG (I.V.) (G5; n=15); 0.5mg of deslorelin (I.M.) and 750UI of hCG (I.V.) (G6; n=10); 10.0mg of ECP (I.M.) (G7; n=10) and 1.0mg of deslorelin (I.M.), 24 hours post-injection with 10.0mg of ECP (I.M.) (G8; n=10). Twenty mares served as control (GC; n=20). Ultra-sonography was daily performed until ovulation (D0) or Hour 120, whichever occurred first. Data was evaluated through the Statistical Analysis System (SAS). Ovulation rate between 24 and 48 hours post-induction in groups G1 to G6 was ≥75% and statistically similar (P>0.05). Ovulation rate in G7 was 20%, lower (P<0.01) than in G1 to G6. G8 showed a 40% rate, which was lower (P<0.01) than G5 and G6 and similar to the remaining groups. ECP treatment was unable to induce or synchronize ovulations. Deslorelin-induced mares did not benefit from pre-treatment with ECP. A égua é classificada como poliéstrica estacional, o que implica suspensão da atividade reprodutiva cíclica usualmente a partir da metade do outono, na maioria destes animais. Esta resposta é devida à diminuição gradual no fotoperíodo natural, considerado como fator primário na sazonalidade reprodutiva. A ausência de ciclos ovulatórios durante os meses de inverno e a inconsistência da fase de ressurgência atingem não só os criadores de raças que procuram o nascimento de potros mais cedo na temporada reprodutiva oficial, mas principalmente aqueles que empregam a técnica da transferência de embriões. A obtenção de ovulações ao longo do ano possibilitaria a utilização reprodutiva ótima de éguas doadoras e receptoras. A fim de verificar a ciclicidade reprodutiva durante outono e inverno, dezessete éguas em uma propriedade do sul do Brasil foram distribuídas ao acaso em dois grupos. De quinze de Janeiro a doze de Setembro de 2009, os animais do grupo Tratamento foram submetidos a fotoperíodo diário fixo de 15 horas. Duas vezes por semana, o trato reprodutivo de todos os animais foi avaliado por ultrassonografia transretal, para verificação da presença de folículos dominantes e corpo lúteo. Dosagem de progesterona foi utilizada para confirmação de anestro. Oitenta e cinco por cento dos animais submetidos ao tratamento mantiveram ciclicidade reprodutiva, enquanto oitenta por cento dos animais controle entraram em anestro de inverno. Houve aumento na duração dos ciclos, devido a fatores endógenos, nutricionais e ambientais. Os resultados demonstram que o tratamento foi efetivo para obtenção de ciclos ovulatórios durante os meses de inverno. / The mare is classified as a seasonal poliestric, which means the suspension of reproductive activity usually from the first half of autumn, most of the mares. This is a response to the gradual decline in the natural photoperiod, considered as a primary factor of reproductive seasonality. The absence of ovulatory cycles during winter months and the inconsistency of the resurging phase strike both breeders who aim foals’ birth early in the official breeding season and those who employ the embryo transfer technique. Achieving ovulation throughout the year would enable the optimal reproductive use of donors and recipient mares. In order to check autumn and winter cyclicity, seventeen mares on a farm in southern Brazil were randomly assigned into two groups. From January 15th to September 12th 2009, animals in Treatment group were subjected to a fixed 15 hours daily photoperiod. Twice a week, the reproductive tract of all animals was examined by transrectal ultrasonography, searching for dominant follicles and presence of corpora lutea. Progesterone levels were used to confirm winter anestrus. 85% mares undergoing treatment maintained reproductive activity, while 80% of Control mares showed winter anestrus. There were changes in lenght of cycles, due to endogenous, nutritional and environmental factors. Results demonstrate that the treatment was effective to attain ovulatory cycles during winter months.

Fotoperíodo artificial sobre a atividade reprodutiva de éguas durante a transição outonal. / Artificial photoperiod on reproduction activity of mares during autumn transition

O presente experimento verificou se o fotoperíodo artificial iniciado no verão retarda o início da transição outonal e nos casos de ocorrência do anestro determinar sua forma de início. Foram utilizadas no experimento 13 éguas com idades variando entre 4 e 10 anos. Todas as éguas no início do experimento encontravam-se ciclando, com presença de corpo lúteo funcional ou folículo dominante. Antes do início do experimento os animais foram divididos em dois grupos, Grupo Luz (GL) com 08 animais e Grupo Controle (GC) com 05 animais, buscando equilibrar a idade e a condição corporal das éguas nos diferentes grupos. A partir do dia 23 de fevereiro de 2006 as éguas do GL foram submetidas a um fotoperíodo artificial de 15 horas de luz e de 9 horas de escuridão, e as éguas do GC foram mantidas sob fotoperíodo natural. Em relação ao início do anestro e à condição corporal não foram observadas diferenças entre o GL e o GC. Dentre os 13 animais utilizados no experimento todos entraram em anestro. Não se observaram diferenças entre os dois grupos de tratamento em relação ao número de dias entre o início do tratamento e a última ovulação e os inícios do tratamento e do anestro, bem como entre o número de dias de duração do último corpo lúteo. Entretanto observou-se diferença no grupo luz onde 75% das éguas apresentaram diestro prolongado enquanto que no grupo controle isto ocorreu em somente 40% das éguas. O anestro inicia por persistência lútea seguida de inatividade folicular ou por inatividade folicular após um diestro regular. O fotoperíodo artificial iniciado a partir da segunda metade do verão não impediu o início do anestro. Entretanto, a maioria das éguas submetidas ao fotoperíodo artificial iniciou o anestro após uma persitência lútea. / The present study aimed to verify if the artificial photoperiod started during summer retards the beginning of autumn transition and if anestrus occurs, to determine the way it begins. There were used 13 mares with ages varying between 4 and 10 years. All the mares were cycling in the beginning of the study, having either a functional corpus luteum or a dominant follicle. Before starting the experiment, the animals were divided in two groups: Light Group (LG) with 08 animals and Control Group (CG) with 05 animals, trying to equilibrate age and body condition of the different group mares. After February 23rd, 2006, the mares of LG were submitted to artificial photoperiod of 15 hours light and 9 hours dark, and the mares of CG were kept under natural photoperiod. Concerning the beginning of anestrus and body condition, no differences were observed between LG and CG. Among the 13 animals used in the study, all entered anestrus period. No differences were observed between the treatment groups about the number of days between the beginning of the treatment and the last ovulation, and the beginning of treatments and anestrus, as well as the number of days of duration of the last corpus luteum. However, differences were found in the light group, where 75% of the mares presented a prolonged diestrus while in the control group it only happened in 40% of the mares. The anestrus begins by luteal persistency followed by follicular inactivity or by follicular inactivity after a regular diestrus. The artificial photoperiod initiated after the second half of the summer did not affect the beginning of the anestrus. However, most of the mares submitted to artificial photoperiod initiated anestrus after a luteal persistency.
