Online Sexual Mindfulness Intervention for Black and Interracial Couples: A Pilot Study

Lawlor, Jenna M. 15 June 2022 (has links)
Sexual mindfulness has been shown to improve couple's relationship and sexual satisfaction. Mindfulness research has mostly been conducted with White participants, largely leaving out the perspectives of diverse participants. This study piloted an online culturally-adapted version of the Sexual Mindfulness Project with Black and interracial couples (N=26 heterosexual individuals in a committed relationship from three different continents; age range 23€“44) to understand the program's acceptability and impacts. Qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys showed that couples enjoyed the program and experienced positive relational and sexual impacts post-intervention, including improved relationship satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, communication, and sexual mindfulness. Implications to improve the program curriculum and delivery are discussed.

What Did You Say? Investigating the Relationship of Self-Perceived Communication Competence and Mindfulness in Communication on Levels of Organizational Trust in a Postsecondary Academic Library

Peterson, Rebecca Jo 16 June 2021 (has links)
Successful educational systems are established, maintained, and cultivated on a foundation of trust. Effective communication among colleagues is widely accepted as a characteristic of groups who establish and maintain high levels of trust. Despite the importance of the relationships between interpersonal communication skills and levels of organizational trust in postsecondary educational settings, there is very little published on this topic. Further, no published research was located that examined relationships between measures of mindfulness in communication with levels of organizational trust in postsecondary educational settings. This study examined relationships between measures of competent and mindful communication with levels of organizational trust among coworkers, with supervisors, and with the organization in a postsecondary academic library. Study participants included 116 out of 150 non-student library employees of a postsecondary academic library on a large suburban private university campus. The research survey was comprised of four different instruments: the SocioCommunicative Orientation Scale (SCO; Richmond & McCroskey, 1990); the Cognitive Flexibility Scale (CFS; Martin & Rubin, 1995); the Mindfulness in Communication Scale (MCS; Arendt et al., 2019); and the Workplace Trust Survey (WTS; Ferres & Travaglione, 2003). The functioning of each instrument was examined by confirmatory factor analysis. Satisfactory model fit for each instrument was obtained. Structural equation modeling revealed that self-reported levels of communication responsiveness predicted levels of trust in coworkers (p = .02). Perceived levels of mindfulness in communication of coworkers predicted levels of trust in coworkers (p < .001), and perceived levels of mindfulness in communication of supervisors (p < .001) predicted levels of trust in supervisors. This research suggests that perceptions of mindfulness in communication among coworkers and with supervisors are associated with levels of organizational trust within postsecondary academic settings in important ways. Further research is necessary to increase understanding of the relationships between mindfulness in communication and organizational trust in educational environments.

Designing Work to Cultivate Mindfulness: An Attention-Based Approach to Work Design

Benjamin R Pratt (10711044) 06 May 2021 (has links)
In contemporary organizations, managing workers’ attention is more critical to success than managing workers’ temporal location. Mindfulness, which represents an essential dimension of attention, has been associated with many important individual and work outcomes. However, we know relatively little about how mindfulness is cultivated at the individual level, and the little we know places the individual in full control of cultivating mindfulness; implicitly conceptualizing managers as relatively passive characters in the cultivation of worker mindfulness. Integrating the mindfulness literature with work design, I propose an attention-based model of work design, through which key work characteristics are linked to worker mindfulness through the mediating effects of psychological demands and job-based psychological ownership. I test portions of this model with two samples. In sample 1, I use survey data from 555 employees from a regional healthcare system to examine the relationships between key work characteristics and job-based psychological ownership. In sample 2, I use survey data from 211 individuals to test both the proposed job-based psychological ownership path to mindfulness, as well as the proposed psychological demands path to mindfulness. I end with a discussion of the findings, limitations, and opportunities for future research.

Correspondence Between TOVA Test Results and Characteristics of EEG Signals Acquired Through the Muse Sensor in Positions AF7–AF8

Castillo, Ober, Sotomayor, Simy, Kemper, Guillermo, Clement, Vincent 01 January 2021 (has links)
This paper seeks to study the correspondence between the results of the test of variable of attention (TOVA) and the signals acquired by the Muse electroencephalogram (EEG) in the positions AF7 and AF8 of the cerebral cortex. There are a variety of research papers that estimates an index of attention in which the different characteristics in discrete signals of the brain activity were used. However, many of these results were obtained without contrasting them with standardized tests. Due to this fact, in the present work, the results will be compared with the score of the TOVA, which aims to identify an attention disorder in a person. The indicators obtained from the test are the response time variability, the average response time, and the d′ prime score. During the test, the characteristics of the EEG signals in the alpha, beta, theta, and gamma subbands such as the energy, average power, and standard deviation were extracted. For this purpose, the acquired signals are filtered to reduce the effect of the movement of the muscles near the cerebral cortex and then went through a subband decomposition process by applying transformed wavelet packets. The results show a well-marked correspondence between the parameters of the EEG signal of the indicated subbands and the visual attention indicators provided by TOVA. This correspondence was measured through Pearson’s correlation coefficient which had an average result of 0.8.

The impact of the academic break in the classroom : A literature review comparing low intensity activities with medium- or high intensity activities in school.

Sundqvist, Martin, Philipsson, Elin January 2021 (has links)

Stanna upp. Mindfulnessträning på jobbet

Brattwall, Moa, Hjärtstam, Amanda January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate how counselors at BUP describe their experiences of mindfulness training in the workplace. Using a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews, we interviewed six social workers employed as counselors and therapists at a child and youth psychiatric center in south Sweden. The analysis was based on Antonovsky’s salutogenic approach and three key elements of his Sense of Coherence concept: comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness. The social workers’ descriptions indicate that they describe that mindfulness training has strengthened all three elements of Sense of Coherence, in their professional roles. This was expressed as follows: 1) A strengthened awareness of thoughts and mental states increased comprehensibility, experienced as a heightened sense of focus and structure in performing work tasks. 2) The ability to stay present and relax improved manageability as a tool to cope with stress in challenging situations. 3) Focusing on the positive aspects of the work and the appreciation of small steps of progress increased meaningfulness.

Caring Consumption : Caring for home textiles by interacting towards sustainable behaviours through a co-creation workshop

Meesak, Keiu January 2020 (has links)
This research is investigating ways of promoting social change towards more sustainable practices around the consumption of decorative home textiles. Knowledge is built and a prototype developed by using transdisciplinary design theory and participatory design methods. Motivators for this work are the sustainability goals defined by the United Nations, specifically reducing waste through prevention and building awareness for sustainable lifestyles (UN Sustainability Initiative, 2020); and a combined interest of becoming more accessible to more people and interacting with them there where they are from the point of view of product or service design, as well as working towards sustainability goals of IKEA (Ingka Group, 2020). The context of home textiles has been chosen because textile waste is a growing problem and with the main emphasis being on issues relating to clothing items and fast fashion, problems with home textiles can be easily overlooked. However, with giant fast fashion companies like H&M and Zara entering the home decor market, there is a reason to focus on preventing the same kind of issues rising with home fashion textiles as have with fast fashion clothes. The aim is to understand the behaviours and meanings surrounding home fashion textiles and to reduce the amount of textile waste going to landfills through prevention and mindful consumption. The purpose is to develop a vehicle of interaction between IKEA and consumers that emphasizes inclusion and the merits of co-creating to solve a problem in a sustainable way and benefits IKEA in their pursuits of cultivating a stronger relationship with the consumers while working towards their circularity goals. The prototype proposed as a result is an evidence-based tool for communication which enables IKEA to access more people while offering both parties a chance to learn from each other while developing sustainable initiatives and mindsets.

Is the sense of self a threat to well-being? : The default mode network and self-related processing in depression and meditation

Hafsteinsson, Matthias January 2020 (has links)
This literature review examines the default mode network (DMN) and how its role in self related processing and narrative selfhood relates to well-being. The essay explores the DMN in three levels of activity: Firstly in normal function, where mind-wandering is positively correlated with dissatisfaction; Secondly its abnormal function in depression, characterized by excessive activity and rumination; Thirdly in its arguably improved function during mindfulness and meditation, where lower activity is associated with higher well-being, decreased mind-wandering and altered sense of self. The essay shows a relationship between the DMN and well-being, where higher activity correlates with lower well-being.

Axelsson, Stina January 2020 (has links)
