Irony, rhetoric, and the portrayal of "no place": Construing the elaborate discourse of Thomas More's Utopia

Padgett, Davina Sun 01 January 2006 (has links)
While traditional readings of Thomas More's Utopia have largely relied upon literal interpretations, and accordingly have emphasized the significance of Utopia as a model of the ideal society, this thesis endeavors to explore beyond the conventional or literal appearance of More's language to consider the possible meanings, intentions, and strategies underlying Utopia's elaborate discourse, concentrating specifically on the significance of More's use of humor and irony and his familiarity with the conventions of satiric fiction.

Utopia Between Ciceronian Humanism and Imperialism

Almokhllati, Mohamad January 2021 (has links)
The premise of this thesis is to show how imperialism is an extension of Ciceronian humanism in More’s Utopia. Core Ciceronian premises, such as rhetoric and the vita activa in relation to imperialism are explored. Cicero called for liberating the barbarians from their savage state by dint of turning them into civic agents that enjoy their legal rights in a civil society by virtue of using rhetoric. Cicero’s vita activa is implemented by practicing philosophy of the vita activa and being active to serve the commonwealth outwardly (other commonwealths). This thesis shows that More’s Utopia is constructed upon Cicero’s ethical man; the Utopians are presented as the best people, for they are morally superior. Consequently, they are the best people to rule other commonwealths (imperialism). This thesis will also show that the ecology in Utopia is colonized and cultivated by the Utopians. The process of cultivation is implemented by virtue of the studia humanitatis and, the ecology is subordinated to the conquerors’ reason, which will be illustrated in this thesis. In addition, this thesis will highlight the similarities between the account of Cicero and More in relation to imperialism and chauvinism. Cicero’s discourse has chauvinism in his depiction of the Gauls and imperialism in his account of Romulus. Similarly, Hythloday’s account of Utopus and the Utopians is imperialistic; Utopia valorizes imperialist rhetoric by justifying seizing the lands of the barbarians under the pretext of civilizing them. This thesis also illustrates how More’s and Cicero’s rhetoric of imperialism corresponds to Herlihy- Mera’s three phases of cultural conquest, namely merchants, military, and politicians.

Danielsson, Karin, Pettersson, Ebba January 2021 (has links)

Konceptutveckling av hölster till No More Boots verktyg SkiClicker

Öhman, Alex January 2021 (has links)
No More Boots kunde testa produkten. / SkiClicker is a product used in ski rentals, ski workshops and ski shops. SkiClicker is used instead of a ski boot to set in ski bindings size. By using this product the rental process can become much more time efficient due to that an extra take off and putting on of the ski boot is removed. Since ski rentals are a stressful environment where you wear a lot of clothes indoors, SkiClicker contributes to that the ski rental experience being a lot better. However, there was no solution for hanging the tool anywhere or carrying it with you, which meant that the tool had to lie on the table. No More Boots therefore wanted to develop a concept on a holster, to see how a holster could look like and how it would work. This report includes how the product development process went. The product development process was divided into 5 phases; feasibility study, product specification, concept generation, selection and detailed design. These different phases led to the result in this project. The result of the product development process generated a concept that met all the requirements and a large part of the wishes that were set up. The concept that was developed was an open holster that held the SkiClicker in a good way. This could be attached to the body with a belt clip that also could be attached directly to the pants. A pen and screwdriver hold was applied to the back cover of the holster. In addition, a basis for a future choice of material was also developed. This finally result in a final prototype that worked as the final product would do and made it possible for No More Boots to test the product. / <p>Betyg 2021-07-16</p>

Galibois, Roland 06 September 2021 (has links)

ABSTRACT This dissertation - The relationship between the program More Education and the Manifesto of the Pioneers of the New Education: nexuses and two liberal propositions determinations - has as main objective to analyze the theoretical and pedagogical foundations of the More Education Program from the relationships and connections between the formulations John Dewey (1930) and the Manifesto of the Pioneers of the New Education (1932), trying to show the social function of the capitalist school would entail. As a theoretical basis for preparation of this work were considered some of the assumptions of the historical development of pedagogical concepts in Brazil, given today under the characterization of the More Education Program as a committed educational measure with the reproduction and dissemination of the values belonging to bourgeois democratic institutions neoliberal. The basic corpus to be analyzed consists of three benchmarks: the assumptions of notebooks for Integral Education Pedagogic Projects More Education Program: "More Education Program: step by step"; "More Education Program: intersectoral management in the municipality", "Integral Education: reference text for national debate"; "More Education Program: intersectoral management in the territory"; "Knowledge Network More Education: assumptions for educational projects of Integral Education" the Manifesto of the documents of the Pioneers of the New Education (1932) and the design of Integral Education advocated by Dewey (1930). Thus, the analysis methodology was documentary, allowing making the necessary comparisons of the similarities and the possible distances of educational proposals. The analysis of the documents made it possible to state that there are significant relationships between same, but these contradictions have seen through the fact that his conception of integral education is linked to the bourgeois interests of instilling liberal and neo-liberal democratic values

Hambach Forest Occupation : Relationships of Care between Plants and Humans

Lehečková, Tereza January 2023 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the interspecies relationships of care in the Hambach Forest, Germany. It covers the caring relations between the human activists protecting the Forest by occupying it and the trees growing there. The text covers the affectionate dimension of the activists’ caring relation towards the trees as well as how the caring manifested in their attentiveness and actions. Apart from the traditional ethnographic methods, the research is rooted in multispecies methodology, particularly plant ethnography. As primary theoretical frameworks, the concepts of more-than human sociality and world-making by Anna Tsing were used, as well as the understanding of the interspecies ethics of care by Puig de la Bellacasa. The analysis shows that the caring relationship of the activists was often rooted in the situated relationality that emerges from particular relations with particular trees or other nonhumans. As a navigating tool, activists sometimes used also the nature-culture dichotomy, and sometimes they, on the contrary, contested it. I show that relationships of care were mutual and occurred in the direction from activists to the trees but also that the trees and Forest took care of many activists’ needs. I also demonstrate how the trees and other nonhumans actively participated in the processes of co-creating the more-than-human sociality in the Forest. The analysis shows that the activists’ behaviour was not always coherent or determined by the same values but was often ambivalent and changing depending on the situation.
