Computational Thinking in der Musikwissenschaft: Jupyter Notebook als Umgebung für Lehre und ForschungSeifert, Uwe, Klaßmann, Sebastian, Varelmann, Timo, Dahmen, Nils 29 October 2020 (has links)
We show that in connection with the digitalization of musicology a special kind of mathematical and logical thinking, i. e. computational thinking/literacy, is in need. Computational thinking is characterized by effective procedures whereas computational literacy includes the implementation of these procedures on machines, i.e. programming. Both are the core of formalization, model building and computer simulation. Furthermore, we point out that “computation” as a central concept for the sciences in the 21st century and its use in cognitive science and the computational sciences make it necessary to reassess the basic assumptions underlying musicological research as science of mind (Geisteswissenschaft). We propose a digital habitat to integrate computational thinking/literacy in musicology and to become acquainted with model building and computer simulation. Jupyter Notebook provides a basis for such a digital habitat. We describe our use of Jupyter Notebook as a teaching environment for computational thinking/literacy.

Music in the Body –The Body in MusicHoppe, Christine, Müller, Sarah Avischag 16 August 2022 (has links)
The body matters in the humanities and within social and cultural studies. It is variously understood as a knowledge store and transmitter, as a node of perception and cognition, as a site of discipline and power and as a locus of identity and agency. But how is the body integral to our concept of music? With increasing interest, Musicology is discovering the epistemological role of the body and its potential as analytical tool, pursuing avenues such as affect studies, performance studies, gender in music and musical perception and cognition.
This volume of collected works draws on an international conference, held at the Department of Musicology at the University of Göttingen in 2019, that aimed to bring together various theoretical perspectives relating to the body and evaluating its present musicological relevance. It explores pathways into a fundamental debate on the body as a central musicological category and reflects on the relevance of this category in the application of diverse musical objects and practices. Composition and performance, aesthetic discourse and sociological analysis, perception and production are all discussed in relation to bodily knowledge, bodily practice and bodily norms. Historical, contemporary, analytical, ethnographic and artistic-experimental approaches reflect the richness of the musicological discipline and its forays into the musical body.
The publication contains twelve different approaches to the body in music in German and English by Sylvain Brétéché, Max Ischebeck, Werner Jauk, Jasna Jovicevic, Moritz Kelber, Tobias Knickmann, Ina Knoth, Madeleine Le Bouteiller, Alastair White, Martin Winter, Stefanie Schroedter and Martin Zenck.:Abbreviations 7

April 2021Finkel, Carola 09 August 2023 (has links)
Under the title 'Palestrina and His Time - Traditional and Digital Research Perspectives', an international online symposium was held on 22 & 23 April 2021 in honour of Prof. Dr. Peter Ackermann, who retired after 25 years at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts. Both Palestrina and digital research methods runs are recurring themes in Ackermann's academic curriculum vitae, and so it made sense to bring the two together at the symposium. The lecture topics, which are presented here in written form, range from current studies on Palestrina's works and their reception history to digital analysis tools and fundamental questions regarding digitality in musicology.

„[…] if it would be me producing the song…“Huschner, Roland 26 September 2016 (has links)
This dissertation attempts to adequately represent and explain the complex field-specific processes which take place in the recording studios of popular music production during the creation of configurations of sound. Using participant observation in Berlin-based recording studios for data collection, this data was analyzed by utilizing and modifying the works of Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault. In contrast to Bourdieu’s claims that fields have an identical structure, the field of popular music production is quite unique in its workings and cannot be explained in such a manner. Based on these findings, a partially different model and terminology is being developed. Most of the used data is available as (German) transcription in the appendix.

Derveaux, Marc 02 February 2001 (has links)
THE FACT THAT LANGUAGE IS SONOROUS HAS ALLOWED THE EMANCIPATION OF AN AESTHETIC MATERIAL CALLED SEMIOPHONY HERE IN MODERN ERA. IN THE LISTENING PROCESS OF 15 DIFFERENT RECORDINGS (SOUND POETRY, LITERATURE, CONTEMPORARY MUSIC, HOERSPIEL) ABOUT 330 VOCAL MODES WERE NOTED AND SEMIOTICS WERE THEN USED TO DESCRIBE THIS PARTICULAR FORM OF MEANING. SOME TWENTY FIGURES WERE THEN DEFINED AND INTERPRETED IN RELATION TO DIFFERENT THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVES: PHILOSOPHY OF LANGUAGE, SOCIOLOGY OF ART, AESTHETICS, OR THE IDEA THAT MUSIC AND POETRY SHARE A COMMON SOURCE.:TABLE DES MATIERES

Musikalischer Stil in Musikwissenschaft und kognitiver PsychologieStorino, Mariateresa 22 September 2023 (has links)
The investigation of musical style involves many facets, among them the complex cognitive strategies involved in the understanding of musical information, the construction of experimental procedures able to study music as an aesthetic phenomenon, and even the definition of the term “style” at all. In the work Le regole della musica (1999), Mario Baroni, Rossana Dalmonte, and Carlo Jacoboni analysed a corpus of arias by the baroque composer Giovanni Legrenzi, and by means of a generative grammar they constructed a system of rules that was implemented in a software named Legre, which supposedly “composes” arias in Legrenzi’s style. The aim of the present study is to verify the stylistic validity of Legre’s output by using methods adopted in cognitive psychology. Experiments with musicians and non-musicians were designed in order to assess whether Legre is a valid grammar of Legrenzi—that is, whether a generative grammar is able to describe and recreate the style of a composer. The results of numerous experiments reveal a difference in discrimination ability between musicians and non-musicians; a person’s performance in the process of discrimination depends not only on the training phase of the task, but also on one’s prior knowledge. The interaction between these data and theoretical reflection contributes to the explication of the nature of style.
