Silveira, Fábio Alves January 2020 (has links)
Abstract: The objective of this research is to investigate the news values adopted by Jornal de Londrina to deal with urban issues in the city of Londrina, such as land use and occupation, the environmental issue and its relations with the construction industry and the real estate sector. The clipping used was the last three years of operation of the newspaper, which circulated between July 1989 and December 2015. This clipping allowed the selection of 121 reports, divided into eight themes that are related to this newspaper's agenda. Of these, two themes were chosen to be analyzed in the light of the news values, as they are more conflicting situations and deal with legal deviations and relevance, referring to two of the most important news values that appear since the first academic studies on the subject. journalism. The debate on news values was made based on a discussion proposed by five authors: Gisele Silva, Marcos Paulo da Silva, Pamela Shoemaker, Mauro Wolf and Nelson Traquina. These authors were chosen because their reflections point to a model of operational news values and easy to apply to the daily practice of newsrooms. / Doutor

: En kvalitativ intervjustudie om svensk sportjournalistik / How far am I willing to go to make sure my text gets readers? : A qualitative interview study about Swedish sports journalism

Hallin Ekesand, Samuel January 2021 (has links)
The title of the study is: How long am I prepared to go for my text to get some readers? A qualitative interview-based study about Swedish sports journalism. The aim of this study is to figure out what underlying factors which affects the journalisms news values and selection on news based on which sports that get editorial space. The paper approaches the subject with a specific viewpoint from the sport floorball, which is the largest indoor-sport in Sweden. Though it’s relative size, the sport seems to have an issue: it does not reach out. It gets a lot less coverage and media attention compared with other similar sports, such as ice hockey for example. The development of the sport has been discussed through the years, and a part of that has been an less flattering image as a hobby, not a sport. A part of the discussion has also circulated around the argument that the sport doesn´t get the media coverage it needs. Some essays have been written on the subjects on journalism and media from the point of news value although very little has been done with a combined view on sports, which is why I argue that there is a gap in the research field which this study will partly fill. This work looks at what the sports media in Sweden are focusing on in terms of coverage and what the sport floorball can do to get more coverage. Since the 2020/21 season, the Swedish newspaper SportExpressen streams every game in the top league for both women and men. The theoretical framework in this study is based on the theory of gate-keeping and the commercialization of the media industry which has been put forward by Stromback and Jonsson. The chosen method of the work is a qualitative interview study which consists of an semi-structured interview with four news editors on four Swedish news papers.  The results of the study shows that the news editors believe that floorball get as much coverage as they deserve. There are several factors that affect contemporary sports journalism. One reason is that today´s journalism is well driven by digital metrics. This development in news values and news selection seems to derive from the technological development in the profession, as well as the commercialization.

Whose Pictures, Whose Reality? Lines of Tradition in the Development of Topics, Negativity, and Power in the Photojournalistic CompetitionWorld Press Photo

Godulla, Alexander, Seibert, Daniel, Planer, Rosanna 17 January 2024 (has links)
Initially founded in 1955 as a platform for Dutch photojournalists to increase international exposure, the World Press Photo competition has grown into the most prestigious contest of photojournalism worldwide, making it an important arena for journalism research. Using qualitative and quantitative content analyses, this study examines all photos shown in the competitions from 1960 to 2020 (N = 11,789) considering the origin of jury members (N = 686), participants (N = 132,800), placements (N = 2347) and the Human Development Index (HDI) of the countries. The topics displayed on the photos, their degree of negativity, and potential power structures in the photos are analysed over time both in terms of continental and HDI-related differences. Significant results show that Africa, Asia, and South America are more frequently depicted by the topic conflict and characterised by negative images than continents with industrialised nations (Australia/Oceania, Europe, North America). Participating European countries have a significantly higher average number of jury members, participants, and placements than participating countries from Africa, Asia, and South America, which seems to account for a dominant Eurocentric view. Implications and critical discussions are summarized in three interim conclusions at the end of this extended paper.

The portrayal of the Mali Conflict in Swedish News Media : A Content Analysis of the Usage of National References

Marin, Anna, Curman, Josefin January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the use of national references in contemporary Swedish journalism. As a result of this, the study raises the question of the importance of national references throughout the world and provides a deeper understanding of the production of news. Through a qualitative and quantitative content analysis of 23 articles from the Swedish news organizations Dagens Nyheter (DN) and Svenska Dagbladet (SVD), the study examines the material using the agenda-setting theory, the gatekeeping theory, and the theories of news frames and news values. The qualitative approach aims to investigate how national references are used, and the quantitative research investigates to what extent national references are used and which themes are often occurring. The study's main findings show that the usage of national references is identifiable in both SVD and DN. The articles are found to utilize national references linked to Swedish soldiers, Swedish politicians, and the political allies of Sweden to provide cultural links to consumers, thus making the news more accessible and recognizable. National references are regularly implemented by using a narrative that exhibits a unified West where Sweden collaborates with other countries and international organizations such as the European Union and the United Nations. Further, Swedish military involvement in the conflict in Mali is often the subject of the articles examined in the study. The situation of the Swedish soldiers is often put on the agenda, and the Swedish military is generally framed as a responsible military force, protecting democracy and being in a leading position. The involvement of the Swedish government and Swedish politicians is frequently mentioned in the articles, making the Mali issue political, which could impact the 2022 election in Sweden.

Ligue 1 and Zlatan Ibrahimović. : A quantitative and qualitative comparative study of Sportbaldet’s reporting of the French football league

Söderlund, Christoffer, Öhlund Svensson, Elin January 2016 (has links)
In this essay, we have studied whether the Swedish newspaper Sportbladet reporting on the French football league (Ligue 1) is different from the season before to season after Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s arrival at Paris Saint-Germain FC in the summer of 2012. The teories that we applied were news values, framing and personalization. In order to complete our investigation, we used two different methods: a quantitative content analysis and critical discourse analysis to see if the news valuation and framing are different, but also to see what impact Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s arrival has on the media coverage of the league. The result of the quantitative content analysis and the critical discourse analysis shows huge differences between 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons. Sportbladet published ten times as many articles during Zlatan’s debut season in the league in comparasion with the previous season. The articles became generally larger, better placed in the newspaper and contained more columns about the subject. We could also note more focus on individuals in the articles. This change is mainly explained by the increased geographical and cultural proximity during the 2012/13 season, which arose in connection with Ibrahimovic’s transfer from Milan to Paris Saint-Germain. The result was pretty much as we had expected. The 2012/13 season was way more covered with a particular focus on Zlatan and his team in the articles. That shows what kind of importance a national super star like Zlatan Ibrahimovic has on the reporting from the French league.

Vnímání zpravodajských hodnot mezi novinářkami a pracovnicemi public relations / Perception of newsworthiness values amongfemale journalists and female public relations officers

Záveská, Dominika January 2011 (has links)
Diploma thesis 'The Perception of News Values among Female Journalists and Female Public Relations Workers' is concerned with the relationship between gender and news values. It compiles theoretical basis for the analysis. Using qualitative and quantitative methods aims to examine the perception of news values and the process of news selection among female journalists and public relations workers. It reveals, whether there are some differences between these two groups, what kind of differences it is, and what the reasons that underlie them are. Some researchers assume that there are differences in the personal value system of these women - female news workers are considered to have a more masculine perspective and qualities tied mostly with men (maybe as a result of professional socialization, or as personal characteristics). The first part of research contains of a questionnaire survey, which examines some demographic and professional characteristics, as well as the evaluation of news values and topics. The quantitative analysis of its results indicates some mild differences in characteristics and in the evaluation as well. Some differences could be understood as approval to the above mentioned assumption. Other could be linked to different nature of both professions. Another finding is that...

Kohoutková, Ladislava January 2015 (has links)
In master thesis called Positive and Negative news in Television Broadcasting we dealt with the structure of television news from negative vs. positive news angle of view in the main television broadcasts of Czech television, TV Nova and FTV Prima. At first we recalled the thought that news have been as many other demonstrations of society constructed. Then we dealt with mechanisms and influences, which affect form of media outputs; we focused on concept of gatekeeping, media routines, character features and news values. One of them was negativity. We presented journalistic concepts, which are aimed positive: Solution Journalism and Constructive Journalism. Than we focused on television broadcasting and its limits. We showed some researches and ideas about audience of broadcasting and about potential influence on it. We have introduced three analyzed TV stations. The analysis showed us percentage of positive and negative news in three main news programs of Czech television, TV Nova and FTV Prima. We analyzed them from the view of predominance, overlap (news, which occurred on more than one station in the same evening), topics, dichotomy home/foreign and concept of constructive news.

The climate issue that was pushed away : A quantitative and qualitative analysis of environmental journalism in Swedish local press and national press.

Granberg, Emilia, Lindgren, Jonatan January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine the differences and similarities between how Swedish national press and Swedish local press cover the two topics climate and environment. To fulfill this aim the study strived to answer the questions: How much does Swedish local press and Swedish national press write about environmental issues and climate issues? What differences and similarities can be found in the way that Swedish national press and Swedish local press frame environmental issues and climate issues?   The study contains both a quantitative analysis and a qualitative analysis. This was done to show both how much was written about environmental issues and climate issues in the analyzed newspapers, but also to examine in what way the newspapers framed environmental issues and climate issues in their articles. The most remarkable result of the study is that only about every fiftieth article deals with environmental and climate issues. This corresponds to 2.2 percent of the newspaper's content. The study shows that Swedish local press contains more articles focused on environmental issues and climate issues, but the Swedish national press frames environmental issues and climate issues as more important news. The result of the study shows that the Swedish newspapers in general tends to put a big part of the blame for the climate changes on the ordinary Swedish citizens. The study also shows that Swedish media uses people and cities as role models to provoke changes and actions towards a better environment.
