Mental Health Literacy of Swedish student-athletes: : A mixed methods study

Semig, Katharina January 2022 (has links)
This mixed methods study aimed to combine a quantitative analysis of the data of Swedish dual career (DC) athletes with two narrative interviews. The objectives were to quantitatively explore the Mental Health Literacy (MHL) of Swedish student-athletes, to compare the MHL of male and female, individual and team sports, and non-transnational and transnational athletes and to analyse student-athletes’ narratives about MHL in action. The data for the quantitative analysis, provided by the Dual Career 4 Mental Health project, was analysed via independent t-tests. For the narrative analysis two student-athletes were interviewed. The results showed significantly higher MHL for female athletes compared to male, and for individual-sport compared to team-sport athletes. No significant differences were found between transnational and non-transnational athletes. In the narrative results the participantstalked about their DC balancing, that lack of support from the environment can lead to the termination of a DC and how there still seem to be differences between the way physical and mental ill health are viewed and supported. At the current point we lack research studying the causes and influences of MHL. Practical applications, like specific education for coaches that could help prevent mental ill health as well as career terminations, still need to be created and applied.

A Narrative Study of the Older Patient and Family Caregiver Experience of Alternate Level of Care

Cressman, Greg 10 1900 (has links)

Alternate Level of Care, or ALC, is a designation assigned to a patient during an acute care hospital stay when that patient is occupying a bed but no longer requires that intensity of service. A high proportion of beds occupied by patients requiring ALC results in problems in the healthcare system related to patient flow, access, and efficiency. The purpose of this study was to better understand the experience of older patients and family caregivers while the patient is designated as requiring ALC. This study employed the Three-Dimensional Narrative Inquiry Space method of Clandinin and Connelly (2000) to examine the experiences of five patients and four family caregivers. The primary data source for this study was a series of semi-structured interviews with individual participants over time while they were in the midst of the experience of ALC. Data analysis involved a twofold process of restorying all interview transcriptions for a given participant into a single story summarizing his or her experience, and analyzing the content across stories to identify common themes. The major finding of this study was that uncertainty was a significant part of the experience of ALC. This uncertainty was manifest in relation to self-concept, waiting for placement, not knowing about information, not being included in planning, lack of mobility, and lack of meaningful activity. The study findings have implications for strategies to manage uncertainty in the areas of practice, policy, education, and research in order to improve the experience of older patients and their family caregivers.
/ Master of Science (MSc)

Narratives for Climate Change Communication in Official Policy Reviews and Suggested Improvements to Aid Sustainable Energy Transition

Tamussino, Paula January 2023 (has links)
There is a considerable gap between what scientists argue is necessary to avoid the most dramatic consequences of climate change and what governments around the world are currently achieving with their mitigation strategies and national pledges. This is partly due to the general inability to communicate solutions to climate change in a desirable way. Strategic narratives have been found to be a great tool to improve the effectiveness of climate change communication. Common narratives in climate change communication are the “Gore” narrative, “End of the World” narrative, “Climate Target” narrative and the “Green Living” narrative. Sweden has been considered a leading country in the field of sustainability in recent years. However, the newly formed government does not seem to be overly concerned with improving environmental sustainability, considering that their proposed policies would lead to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions for Sweden for the first time in decades. The Swedish Climate Policy Council has been formed in order to evaluate whether Swedish policies are aligned with Sweden’s national climate targets on an annual basis. This thesis examines recent reports of the Swedish Climate Policy Council through a document analysis in order to estimate the effectiveness of their climate change communication. The reports were coded using framework analysis and corresponding narrative statements were identified and categorized in the above mentioned narrative categories. Relative frequency of different types of narratives is analyzed and, based on recent climate change communication research, recommendations for improvements are given. It has been found that the Swedish Climate Policy Council should create a strategic narrative for climate change communication, based on the values of the current government.

Creative catalysts : a narrative investigation of pivotal learning experience through conversation with six contemporary artists

Curry, Kendra Wynne 19 October 2010 (has links)
This thesis is a narrative study that examines significant life experiences of six living artists that were pivotal in their decision to pursue careers in the arts. Although the examples found in these conversations are not exhaustive—many factors play into the individuals sense of identity and agency—they serve to give voice to the multiplicity of the learning experience, underscoring that creative education occurs in the home, the community, and among social groups as frequently as it does in the classroom. Through direct, open-ended conversations with artists, research explores the setting of upbringing and education, the pivotal experiences—catalysts—that propelled these individuals into art careers, and impact of their experience on both creative practice and notions of art learning. Interviews encompass artists whose work is located in public spaces, natural landscapes, and urban environments as often as it appears in the traditional exhibition settings, whose work is both collaborative and socially constructed. They comprise Rick Lowe, artist and founder of Project Row Houses in Houston, Texas whose community-centered social sculpture expands on our cultural assumptions about the artist and Anne Wallace, a public artist whose early work as a human right activist and bi-cultural experiences translate into videos about the complexities of the United States/Mexico border. It includes Vincent Valdez, a self-described “hyper-realist” who depicts his home city and composite life experiences of his family through allegorical paintings and drawings; Marie Lorenz, an artist explorer whose interest in urban waterways brings her work into the waters of forgotten canals and rivers; of Robert Pruitt, who critiques ever-changing political landscapes, conceptions of history, and globalism through hybrid drawings and sculptures; and Franco Mondini-Ruiz who fuses aesthetics of high and low in installations and creative economy widely accessible to people both within and outside the confines of the art world. Through narrative conversation, this thesis enriches overlapping theories that encompass our understandings of education and learning—mentorship, experiential learning, the aesthetic experience, place-based learning, communities of practice—through lived example, underscoring learning as a socially constructed phenomenon. Experiences of learning, unique and wholly individualized, contribute to a one’s sense of self and agency; in the case of the six artists featured in this study, creative experiences contribute to their identity as “artist” and motivated their pursuit of lifework and career. / text

Unknown Date (has links)
The study was based on narrative research approach exploring the females’s psychological process of an unmarried adult female who had more than one lover at the same time. According to the research and practical experience, some people, especially the females who had more than one lover at the same time would experience a lot of negative feelings. The participator Diane was introduced by a friend based on purposive sampling. After interviewing and interpreting the story, there are some important stories under what she had said. Although she looked like optimistic and didn’t care about external pressure, in fact, she wanted to be accepted and worried about the social judgment. Therefore, she told about her story carefully, and explained her behavior again and again. Besides, she regulated her self-image all the time when she falling in love with two men. Not only influencing the narration in the interview, the negative social judgment also played a key person from the beginning. It was internalized by the female who had more than one lover at the same time, and oppressed her through stigmatization. “This is not a story talking about unfaith; this is a story talking about a person who seek to be accepted, be permitted to survive under the struggle between the self-image and the need of love.” Finally, there were some discussion about the phenomenon that a person had more than one lover at the same time and some suggestions to the researchers and counselors.

By taking a post-modern perspective, I tried to understand the participator’s experiential world through his narrative language in a semi-structured interview. The method of text analysis is the holistic-content model by Lieblich, Tuval-Mashiach(1998). After a narrative interpretation, I concluded the participator’s self-identity process describing his different self-image before and after entering the prestigious high school, assessed the participator’s degree of self identity by relevant theories in a qualitative method and discussed the way he established self-images. Finally, I proposed some educational suggestions for practical educators, qualitative researchers and counselors.

Chen, Li Wen Unknown Date (has links)
Integrating the traditional disciplines into seven main learning areas according to Grade 1-9 Curriculum has imposed great impact on both knowledge structures and the instructors; especially the practice of Integrative Activities Learning really troubles the grass-roots teachers. Base on years of experience as an instructor in Teacher Education Center, I’ve found that the current implementation of Integrative Activities Learning is not easy to be executed in reality. The purpose of Integrative Activities Learning is to emphasize on integrated curriculum and all teaching aspect, and through the participation in the planned activities, students are in the mean time trained to have good life skills. When focusing on Aesthetics/Philosophy Course Orientation, not only the teachers can follow the curriculum guidelines to set the pace of the appropriate teaching plans, the schools can also adopt flexible curriculum; this will be a good way to guide the students in learning, exploring and experiencing daily events. Moreover, through the practice of Integrative Activities, students can learn to link their daily experiences with beauty of life, thus, they’re trained to own life skills. This abstract uses narrative analysis as the mean to proceed the evaluation on the effectiveness of practicing Integrative Activities Learning in elementary schools. To study the result of stressing on story reading, dialogue sharing and doing waver game – a curriculum for attaining story understanding, dialogue forming and gaming experience. This research found the following points. 1.Through the concept of narrative analysis and self-attribution to realize the possible ways of implementing Integrative Activities Learning in elementary schools. 中等學校輔導教師對師生諮商雙重關係的經驗探究 / A study on the teacher-student dual relationships of middle school counselors

Unknown Date (has links)
/ / To explore the teacher-student dual relationships of middle school counselors, four study participants facing dual-relationships in junior and senior high schools including novice and veteran teachers were interviewed through purposive sampling. The results show their work appearances, assist with the discussion of the consideration facing dual relationships in eco-systems perspective. The four participants all have heard the teacher-student dual relationships and understand its meaning, but have different impressions of when they heard, and the reasons of consideration. Interviewed teachers think the advantages of dual relationships include providing students the opportunity to observe the teachers, being able to build relationships easier, understanding students’ different performance, and meeting the teachers’ own needs of the close feelings, they also can link resources in order to improve the students’ environment, and promote counseling works. However, the distresses are their inner feelings, such as teachers worry about the personal values involving, or the need for thinking of this topic from time to time. Otherwise, they aren’t troubled with the solvable negative effects. From the interviewees’ experiences, their duel relationship with students resulted from the system of school environment. They were under the pressure of student individual counseling from their colleagues’ expectations. However, they were able to provide more resources in the school under their role as a teacher. In terms of the decision making of exosystem, how the interviewees processed their conflicts of duel relationship is hard to explore since they have already accepted the reality of teaching and counseling in the same time as guidance counselor (guidance teacher), and forgot about their first thought. When we look at the macrosystem, interviewees’ identified their roles as teachers, and considered it as a high responsibility career, and expected themselves devoted to their career more. Generally speaking, the interviewees accept the teacher-student dual relationships. Their way to deal with this inner conflict is trying their best according to their own expectation without other limitation.
