A Journey through a Collective Environmental Conscience Metanarrative: The Case of Goletta VerdeCorriveau, Marianne January 2014 (has links)
This thesis presents some articulations of environmentalism in Italy. Using the Italian environmental association Legambiente as entry point, it explores how the vision of a collective environmental conscience is constructed, represented, claimed and contested in the 2013 edition of the association’s principal campaign, Goletta Verde. The integration of theoretical tools [narrative-networks (Lejano et al. 2013), matters of concern (Latour 2008), imagined audiences (Litt 2012) and performance and impression management (Goffman 1959)], and research methods [fieldwork, interviews, participant observation, and the use of extensive literature], reveals analytical findings divided in three parts - how the campaign narrative is constructed, what are some of the discontinuities encountered, and what are implications of the associative vision for environmentalism and its study by anthropologists.

An A/r/tographical Inquiry of a Silenced First Nation Ancestry, Hauntology, G(hosts) and Art(works): An Exhibition CatalogueCloutier, Geneviève January 2014 (has links)
As a hauntological artist, I deconstruct my silenced First Nation Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) ancestry as I look towards the intergenerational narratives of my grandmother, mother, and I. As I employ the methodology of a/r/tography, the intersection of autobiography and art-making, I utilize diverse art forms to find that g(hosts) reside amongst spaces of liminality. Supported by the methodology of a/r/tography, as I draw on works which blur the boundary between past and present, self and other, I deconstruct the silencing of my First Nation lineage by creating three art(works). These art(works) are placed within an exhibition catalogue and inquire into 1) the specters that loom between the evocative objects of our narratives, 2) how script-writing and the script’s performance can reveal g(hosts) in spaces of liminality, and 3) how sculptures facilitate spectral movement. Each individual art(work) plays a role in breaking the silence. A(wake), specters arise.

Translating and Representing Citizens’ Quotations of the Syrian Humanitarian Disaster in English-Language Newspapers: A Narrative ApproachJaber, Fadi January 2017 (has links)
In March 2011, following the self-immolation of a Syrian man named Hasan Ali Akleh, several demonstrations were staged across Syria, leading to the arrest of many Syrians in the town of Deraa. These demonstrations escalated into an ongoing conflict in most cities and towns, known as the “Syrian Conflict” (aka “Syrian Crisis,” “Syrian Civil War,” or “Syrian Uprising”). The conflict has resulted in the worst humanitarian disaster since World War II and the Rwandan genocide. According to recent published reports by many international organizations (e.g. United Nations, Amnesty International, Europa), 11.5% of Syria’s population has been killed or injured since the conflict erupted in March 2011, more than 500,000 people have died, over 5 million refugees have fled Syria since 2011, and there has been massive destruction in Syrian cities and towns.
This dissertation draws on narrative theory, narrative features, narrative framing, media responsibility, and the representation of the Other to provide a theoretical and conceptual foundation and fulfill the dissertation’s objectives. To do this, it has established a theoretical and conceptual model of analysis specific to the event in question to investigate how the quotations and narratives of Syrian citizens, delivered as texts presented in translation in English-language newspapers, narrate, frame, and represent the Syrian humanitarian disaster. This dissertation also scrutinizes media responsibility of the selected English-language newspapers as revealed in the selected and translated quotations and narratives. The dissertation methodologically utilizes a qualitative narrative analysis research design, and analyzes a purposive sample of translated quotations and narratives in 404 news texts from the online versions of the three following English-language newspapers: the British The Guardian, the American The New York Times, and the Canadian National Post. The findings of this dissertation ultimately encourage a better understanding of the crucial role that translation plays in narrating, framing, and representing humanitarian disasters within global media outlets.

Creative Geographies and Environments: Geopoetics in the AnthropoceneMagrane, Eric, Magrane, Eric January 2017 (has links)
Drawing on traditions of cultural geography and creativity, the environmental humanities, and critical geographic theory, this dissertation includes five articles that develop geopoetics as a sub-field of the geohumanities. It sketches the contours of three modes of geopoetics: as creative geography, as literary geography, and as geophilosophy. Through site-based projects at three Sonoran Desert ecological research and tourism sites, it furthers the use of artistic and literary practice in geohumanities research, employs that practice to interrogate climate change and Anthropocene narratives, and addresses the role of art and literature in environmental issues. In addition, it utilizes the development and teaching of a community course on climate change and poetry as an additional "site" of research, to illustrate the role of arts and humanities approaches to global environmental change. Drawing on the content of the climate change and poetry course, it also includes a close reading of the work of five contemporary Indigenous ecopoets in relation to climate narratives. This dissertation proposes that geopoetics, literally "earth-making," is broadly relevant to questions of socio-ecological futures and is a means to imagine and enact other ways of inhabiting the world.

A study of innovation perception within the construction industryAbadi, Ayda January 2014 (has links)
There is a long history of criticising the construction industry for its lack of innovation as a source of competitive advantage. However, through a critical literature review, it was found that the problem with managing innovation in construction has its roots in a misconception of innovation and indeed the industry is a source of new ideas. This thesis draws on prior publications in the field of innovation management, organisational narratives and sensemaking theory and aims to analyse innovation perception within the construction industry, focusing on the meanings attributed by the industry’s practitioners and policy makers. In contrast to the dominant positivist and rationalistic approach in studying construction innovation, this research employs a qualitative, interpretative, social constructionist perspective. Data is incorporated through twenty semi-structured interviews with practitioners who work within the UK construction firms as well as UK government reports published regarding the progress review of performance of the construction industry. The findings of the study indicated that there is a disconnection between managerial frameworks of innovation and practitioners’ action and their narratives. Through the viewpoint of sensemaking theory, this study argues that the construction of meaning of innovation is a dynamic process that can be changed constantly over a period of time. In narrating innovation, the practitioners draw on their own real-world experiences of a situation and the characteristics of the organisations which they work in. Moreover, individuals’ stories often are associated with the dominant popular examples of innovation mobilised with the organisational strategic settings and government initiatives in order to provide a shared perspective. This study demonstrates a discursive model of innovation, assigning the individuals’ innovation within an organisation as ‘situational innovation’ and ‘contextual innovation’ and the government report and policy makers’ innovation as ‘rhetorical innovation’. There has been limited application of a narrative approach to innovation in the domain of the construction industry. This thesis has provided theoretical and practical contributions through the application of narrative and innovation within the context of the construction industry. It has also demonstrated the value of the narrative approach to understanding innovation perception within a construction industry context, while identifying its limitations as a research method. The findings of the research further recommend implications for construction industry policy makers. Policy makers can tap into the ‘situational innovation’ and ‘contextual innovation’ to promote government programmes and policies, especially those concerned with change and innovation in the industry.

The sequential arts (AS) or graphic narratives (NG) are a modality of hybrid modality (multimodal) composed of image and word. Throughout its history, NG has faced several challenges in academia and in the market, and although it is a subject of complex multidisciplinarity, it has little research in the visual design field, that has ample knowledge in design methodologies and characteristics intrinsically multidisciplinary, as well as technical expertise in visual communication. This research seeks to analyze the methodological principles of visual design and the process of production of graphic narratives, making a step by step analysis of selected methodologies in the areas of General Design (MUNARI, 2008; BAXTER, 1995), Visual Design (FUENTES, 2006; DENARDI E GERALDES, 2016; MAYA, FRANCESCHI E NEROSKY, 2016; HALUCH, 2013), Narratives (BEREITER E SCARDAMALIA, 1987; INGERMAN, 2014) and Graphic Narratives (LARSON, 2014; SALERNO, 2011; MOORE, 2003; BYRNE, 1999; MATEU-MESTRE, 2010). Using bibliographic research on visual design, image, visual language, narratives and graphic narratives as the basis for the construction of theoretical knowledge, the steps are segmented in phases, using as base the generalist design methodologies, showing that there are benefits for the professional producers of NG to use the Visual Design methodologies as the design backbone for NG production.

Research on adoption is usually characterized by studies that evaluate the children: they talk about the children but not with them. Few studies have investigated adoption from the children?s perspective. In this work, we highlight the idea that to be able to understand the adoption process, it is important to take into consideration the meanings attributed to adoption from those experiencing it. This research aimed at investigating the children?s narratives about their adoption process. A theoretical-methodological approach called Network of Meanings has guided the construction of this corpus and its analysis. We have talked with three children around 6 and 7 years-old, who have experienced late adoption. Six interviews were made with each child at their own home, having props as external cues. The adoptive parents were interviewed during one visit. The interviews were registered through audiotape, complemented by pictures of the children?s productions and field notes. The tapes were fully transcribed and revised. The analysis was based on the children?s narratives, parents?narratives, and field notes. We understand this investigation as a dialogic context where the narratives are constructed and situated at the relationship between researcher and participant. By narrating, the children constructed meanings about their life history and may have learned about themselves. From these children?s perspectives we found out about the dialectic and intrinsic relationship between the late adoption process and other contexts, such as foster-home institution, biologic family and Judiciary System. While the value of life history became evident, at the same time a past silencing process also became evident, constraining the practices related to the adoption process. Thus, by listening to these children, we recognized the necessity of pre and post-adoption family programs in which children and parents could have voice, respect and value for their life history, and in which their mutual expectations could be discussed at different moments.

When death knocks on the door : Relatives experiences of being a relative to a person dying from cancerPetersson, Evelina, Lind, Sofia January 2019 (has links)
Approximately every third person in Sweden will be a part of a cancer diagnosis. When the diagnosis is set, the life may change. All of those who get a cancer diagnosis will not die but some will reach a palliative stage where the goal is to ease pain and anxiety instead of curative treatment. The registered nurse is not only responsible for the patient's wellbeing but also the wellbeing of the relatives. It´s important to conduct a family focused nursing care where the inclusion of close relatives is important. The aim of this study was to embrace the relatives´ experiences of living with a person who is dying from cancer. The study was conducted as a general literature study with an inductive approach in which ten result articles were selected. Four main themes and nine sub-themes were formed after the results were processed, where the main themes became: Standing on the side, Pause their own life, Be with and Gratitude. The conclusion of the literature study was that relatives of a person dying from cancer felt a distinct concern that the dying person would die alone or with untreated pain. The relatives were in need of better support and guidance from the registered nurse. By taking part of the relatives´ experiences, the registered nurse can gain an increased understanding, which makes it easier for the relatives to receive support.
