Bayesian shrinkage in mixture-of-experts models: identifying robust determinants of class membership

Zens, Gregor 13 February 2019 (has links) (PDF)
A method for implicit variable selection in mixture-of-experts frameworks is proposed. We introduce a prior structure where information is taken from a set of independent covariates. Robust class membership predictors are identified using a normal gamma prior. The resulting model setup is used in a finite mixture of Bernoulli distributions to find homogenous clusters of women in Mozambique based on their information sources on HIV. Fully Bayesian inference is carried out via the implementation of a Gibbs sampler.

Pedagogical practices are educational practices that are organized to concretize certain pedagogical intentions. The objective of this work is to understand the main pedagogical practices that characterized the normal schools of São Paulo from the 1950s to the 1970s. It is a qualitative research with elements of narrative research that was constructed through bibliography review, interviews and documentary analysis. Information was collected in the Library of the School of Education of the University of São Paulo, in the Archive and Library of the former Normal School of Campinas and in the personal collection of the interviewees. The research initially investigated the historical aspects of the normal Brazilian and São Paulo school and the implications of public policies in teacher training. The theoretical references on the historical aspects were of Villela, Saviani and Almeida. It addressed concepts, aspects and dilemmas in the formation of multipurpose teachers. Regarding teacher training issues, the references were from Pimenta, Franco, Marcelo Garcia, Nóvoa and Libâneo. The research articulated a dialogue between the data collected and the formative memories of the interviewees. The reference on the use of narrative-interviews as research data was by Schütze and Bom Meihy. The choice of the interviewees, as former students of normal courses and currently teaching research teachers, has not only retrieved information, but memories permeated by reflection, which is a daily part of the research activities carried out by the researcher in education. It was verified through methodological triangulation with Gomes and Minayo reference that pedagogical practices carried out in normal schools between 1950 and 1970 reflected the national-developmental policy of that moment, with intense social control of the Brazilian State, through the feminization of teaching career. The educational ideology was from progressive education, but with strong influences of the traditional pedagogy. The performance of the Teaching Practice teacher was considered a key element for the teacher training of students of the normal course, who in their narratives recognized the relevance of this discipline. This study promoted the understanding of the organization of pedagogical practices in normal schools in São Paulo and the influences received from Pedagogy and public policies for the training of multipurpose teachers. It is hoped that the results obtained in this research can contribute with historical elements and reflections that give origin to new studies on teacher education in the Brazilian context. Keywords:

Marc, Estelle 22 January 2018 (has links)
This PhD thesis presents an analysis of the fretting wear of a cylinder/plane contact subject to complex loading conditions, namely a normal sinusoidal force solicitation and a tangential sinusoidal displacement, both possibly subject to fluctuations in amplitude, frequency and phase shift between signals. The purpose of this work is to study the wear of 304L cluster guides by nitrided 316L rods due to flow-induced vibrations of primary fluid in nuclear reactors.Firstly, the experimental study conducted in a dry and ambient temperature - a non-representative but very simple environment - shows significant wear of both counter-bodies, which reveals the fragile properties of the nitrided tube in this environment. A very strong dependence of the fretting scar morphology with the sliding amplitude is noted. Only the wear kinetics of the nitrided tube is influenced by the evolution of the normal load. Also, an analytical description of friction energy is developed, taking into account all loading parameters. In a second hand, in aqueous lithium-boron solution, a slightly more representative choice of medium but still remaining in the ambient, only the 304L steel plane wears out, the 316L nitrided steel cylinder is not subject to detectable wear. A coupling with corrosive phenomena is proposed. In simple fretting, contact confinement locally increases the pH value. Moreover, the analysis of the influence of the fretting frequency suggests that only the passive layer is worn between each slip. Under complex loading, the fluctuation of the normal load allows a better accessibility of the solution in the rubbed interface, increasing locally the tribocorrosive effects. A multiplicative wear law taking into account the various effects of normal force fluctuation is introduced and its stability is checked. Finally a finite element calculation model is used to simulate wear profiles in simple fretting and also in the presence of variable normal force. Only cases where the plan wears out (lithium-boron environment) have been simulated. In simple fretting, test simulation results are satisfactory. On the other hand, the non-superposition of the experimental and numerical profiles when the normal force fluctuates, confirms the presence of physical phenomena in the interface which are not yet represented in the numerical tool.

Navigating antenatal care in Oman : a grounded theory of women's and healthcare professionals' experiences

Al Maqbali, Fatma January 2018 (has links)
Background: In Oman, 33.3% of women attended late for publicly funded antenatal care in 2015 and 24% did not attend for the recommended 4-6 visits during their pregnancy. This low attendance suggests a need to explore attendance for antenatal care for low-risk pregnant women in Oman. Methodology: An exploratory qualitative design informed by constructivist grounded theory methodology was used in this research. Methods: In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with an initial purposive sample of nine pregnant women. The initial analysis enabled theoretical sampling of thirteen non-participant observations during women's appointments, interviews with ten care providers, and six women who booked late after 12 weeks of gestation. A constructivist grounded theory analytical framework of initial, focused and theoretical coding was followed to analyse all the data collected. Findings: The core category consists of five interrelated sub-categories: perceived benefits and value of antenatal care; timing of the first antenatal visit; woman-carer interactions during antenatal care; experiences with antenatal care delivery; and supplementary use of private healthcare. The integral categories explain the social processes and issues surrounding antenatal care. The emergent core category, Navigating antenatal care, reflects the views of the women and their care providers. The women were unhappy with the organisation and physical environment of care but attended their appointments to ensure optimal pregnancy outcome and to alleviate their fears of developing complications. Thus, they used both private and public healthcare and sourced online information in response to their feelings of obligation to protect their fetus. Conclusion: The women appeared disempowered and to lack control over the care they received. Thus, they accepted conditions such as long waiting times in an uncomfortable environment and the disrespect they encountered during their visits. There was a discrepancy between what the women expected and needed from their antenatal care and the actual care and information they received, which did not satisfy their needs. This could be due to a lack of woman-centred care and limited involvement in the plan of care. Thus, women sought further reassurance by accessing private clinics, using online information, and networking with others, which also resulted in a late booking for public antenatal care.

January 2007 (has links)
Abstract: This comparative study tackles the issue of teacher education for children and the first years of elementary teaching and it aims to discuss the proposition of two different courses for the formation of the same professional, the teacher, in Pedagogical Courses and Normal Courses at superior level, after the law 9394/96. Great part of the expectations related to the success of education is granted to the teacher’s performance, as are the responsibilities for educational failure, and the teacher is seen as an unprepared professional to deal with current issues and too limited to promote progress in education. These are some of the arguments used to the implantation of new policies for teaching formation. The proposals of the Normal Courses at superior level and Pedagogical Courses in the beginning of teacher education, far from reaching a consensus, present unconformities justified by different conceptions of teacher formation among lawmakers, studious and other professionals in education. The study of the courses for teacher education contributes to a return to questions such as the incoherence between the expected teaching performance as expressed in the educational legislation, the formation to which the teacher has access to and the necessary knowledge for teaching. / Mestre

Ismael Wilson Cadamuro Júnior 12 June 1997 (has links)
This work presents a general study on the design and veriflcation of slender reinforced concrete columns, subjected to axial force and biaxial bending, considering material and geometric non-linearities (material doesn\'t fit Hooke law and second order analysis). It is also treated the design of cross sections in the ultimate strength. It is considered a general poligonal cross section, with any reinforcement distribuition. The creep effect is also taken into account. The concrete stress-strain curve is anyone since it can be represented as a sequence of any degree polinomiuns. Detailed calculation and computational routines are given too.

Análise de modos normais em proteínas / Normal mode analysis in proteins

Mendonça, Matheus Rodrigues de 26 April 2010 (has links)
Low frequency normal mode approach to describe conformational fluctuations of globular proteins has helped to characterize their biological functions. Various theoretical and experimental methods have been employed to det ermine the magnitudes of those internal motions. Those motions can be characterized by the Debye-Waller factor (B-factor), co rresponding to the local mobility of the residue at the atomic level. Normal mode analysis using elastic network models (ENM) has demonstrated to be a robust technique. Experimental B-factors has been reproduced theoretically by means of this techniq ue in a short computational time and it has been shown to be competitive with more sophisticated techniques. The ENM is a coarse-grained approach in which the protein is represented by a three-dimensional elastic network of alpha-carbon atoms connect ed by springs. Springs represent bonded and non-bonded interactions between the alpha-carbon atoms. In this work, we study th e elastic network models known in the literature. Next, we perform a comparative study between them. We show that the pfGNM a nd pfANM models present better correlation with experimental B-factors than the traditional GNM and ANM models. We also devel op a new approach, which we entitled anisotropic weighted contact number (AWCN). We show that it presents results significantly better than the traditional anisotropic elastic network model. Finally, we perform a study of investigative character of the behavior for the weight of the interactions between residues. This study revealed that, for the WCN and AWCN models, the correlation exhibits its maximum value for weighted interactions $1/R^p$, between residues $i$ and $j$, for values of $p$ around 2. In the pfGNM and pfANM models the correlation is max imized for two values of $p$, the first one around 2 and the second one around 4.75. This indicates that the weighting by the reciprocal of the square of the distance, usually employed in the literature, may not be appropriate to obtain the best correlation.

Uma transição assimétrica entre estados simétricos: o alosterismo da Glucosamina 6-fosfato Desaminase / An asymmetric transition between symmetric states: the Glucosamine 6-phosphate Deaminase allostery

Câmara, Amanda Souza 07 February 2013 (has links)
Allosteric systems are characteristic of proteins with one or more equilibrium states. Such an enzyme experiences a modification of its activity when a cooperative substrate binds to a state or another, thus, establishing a change in population equilibrium (1). These states are recognized by having a more stable conformation, and they coexist in an ensemble. X-ray diffraction and NMR experiments already demonstrated this dynamic equilibrium, and simulation methods, as molecular dynamics and normal mode analysis, generally provide a more complete proof (2).The allosteric enzyme Glucosamine-6-Phosphate Deaminase appeared to be a good model to better understand the equilibrium dynamics as essential to the protein function, given its reversibility of the catalysis and rapid-equilibrium kinetic mechanism. It also has the structure elucidated for both its conformers (3). A computational approach would now give better perspective on how the conformational changes occur. A set of results of this latter kind were obtained: (a) a 100ns dynamic starting at the hexameric T conformer, explicitly solvated, building a NVT ensemble using NAMD program and CHARMM force field; (b) a principal components analysis making use of the calculated dynamic and of the Gromacs algorithms; (c) and normal mode analysis of the T conformer structure (pdb code 1fsf) minimized with Gromacs program using ENCADV vacuum force field. Not only the conventional analyses for these results (fluctuations and projections) were taken, but also an inertia tensor analysis was developed. As the allosteric conformational change, for this protein, was described by the displacement of only two rigid body subunits³, its description by inertia tensors should act as a filter for the high frequency and functionally uninteresting motions, which normally constitute only noise.

Extended High-frequency Audiometry and Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions in Normal-hearing Patients with Unilateral Tinnitus

Smurzynski, Jacek, Fabijanska, Anna, Kochanek, Krzysztof, Skarzynski, Henryk 24 June 2009 (has links)
Some tinnitus patients have normal hearing on the conventional audiogram. It has been suggested that the presence of a limited area of damaged outer hair cells (OHCs) with intact inner hair cells, which is not detected on the audiogram, results in unbalanced neural activity between Type I and Type II fibers leading to tinnitus. Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) provided ambiguous data of OHC function in normal-hearing tinnitus patients when compared to non-tinnitus controls. It is known that hearing loss in the extended high frequency (EHF) region may decrease DPOAEs evoked at lower frequencies. Results of EHF audiometry in tinnitus patients are limited. The aim of the study was to evaluate DPOAEs and EHF thresholds in normal-hearing patients reporting unilateral tinnitus in left ear. Thus, each subject acted as their own control. Data were obtained for 25 subjects with bilateral hearing thresholds 3dB. Median audiometric data showed that thresholds in the left ears were significantly higher than those in the right ears at all four EHFs. Mean DPOAE levels of the left ears were lower than those of the right ears in the frequency range above 1 kHz. Additionally, a paired-comparison test of DPOAE levels of each patient’s right and left ear revealed significant differences at 6, and 8 kHz. The results indicate that: 1. OHC impairment in the most basal region reduces contribution to more apically generated DPOAEs; 2. OHC impairment in a limited area, which may be revealed by DPOAEs but not by conventional audiometry, can contribute to tinnitus generation; and 3. patients with unilateral tinnitus and normal hearing on the conventional audiogram are likely to demonstrate hearing loss in the EHF region.
