Parametric BIM : Energy Performance Analysis Using Dynamo for Revit

Mengana, Sinan, Mousiadis, Tassos January 2016 (has links)
Due to the rapid development of technology, the AEC industry in Sweden havebeen struggling to string along it. The demand from authorities to use BIM in theindustry are increasing and the respond from companies are minimal. The buildingprocess uses to be spanned over several phases and the early design phase is wherefocus is lied on mostly in this thesis. Here can several actors as architects, engineersetc. be involved. Lack of communication and lack of coordination between the partshave an important impact on the outcome and therefore BIM was developed. In theearly designing phase, the project takes it shape and approximated calculations andanalysis have to made. Usually the results from the early design phase dier from theanalytical analysis that are made later and the costs of projects increases. However, many new tools have come along the way with that development which makes itpossible to make energy optimization an even more ecient practice. Therefore, thisthesis has been chosen to investigate the dierent energy possibilities and outcomesduring the early design stage, in the aspect of daylight and energy simulations. Asimple test building was constructed in Stockholm, Sweden. The building is formedin a way that allows various material parameters to be altered in order to study theimpacts of the annual energy distribution. This thesis will shed more light on why itis important to develop the methods of energy simulations in the early design phase, and it's done by using the latest state of the art tools. A newly developed VPL toolnamed Dynamo together with the design tool Autodesk Revit and Green BuildingStudio is used in the simulation process. A script will be coded in the Dynamotool that will determine and allow the parameter variations of the building model inRevit. A comparison of 4 dierent case studies is graphically presented at the end.Even though the result was quite expected, the aim of this thesis was rather to serveas an example of how the tools of Dynamo and Revit can successfully coop-orate.

In this dissertation, we studied the dynamics of parametrically-driven oscillators, with a focus on the amplification of small signals. We begin with a revision of parametric resonance and parametric amplification in a linear oscillator parametrically excited. Next, we studied two types of nonlinear parametrically-driven oscillators and finished the dissertation with an analysis of a parametric dimer. Basically, we analyzed the phenomena of parametric resonance and parametric amplification by comparing the results obtained analytically (via the averaging or harmonic balance methods) with those of numerical integration of the equations of motion. In all cases, we obtained the transition line to parametric instability of the parametric oscillator. We excited the parametric amplifier with and without detuning between the pump and the external signal. We found that the parametric amplification depends sensitively on the phase of the external ac signal and on the internal pump amplitude. We showed that such amplifiers can be easily used for the reception and decoding of signals with phase modulation. Furthermore, we obtained time series, envelopes, and Fourier transforms of the response of the parametric amplifier to small external ac signals. Specifically in the cases of the parametrically-driven Duffing oscillators, we obtained and analysed the bifurcation lines and the amplitude of limit cycles as function of the pump amplitude and frequency. In addition, we derived an expression for the signal and idler gains of the nonlinear parametrically-driven oscillators with the harmonic balance method. The results imply that the nonlinear parametric amplifiers can be excellent detectors, specially near bifurcations to instability, due to their high gains and narrow bandwidths. Finally, we studied the dynamics of two linear oscillators coupled and parametrically excited, with and without external ac driving. We found that such systems have a wealth of dynamical responses. They present parametric amplification that is dependent on the coupling parameter and on the phases of the external ac signals. Such systems may be used as tunable amplifiers.

Modelos de duração aplicados à sobrevivência das empresas paulistas entre 2003 e 2007 / Duration models applied to survival enterprises of São Paulo state between 2003 to 2007

Pavão, André Luis 22 May 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents the main results that determined the bankruptcy of enterprises located in the São Paulo State from 2003 to 2007. The models used in this work were possible due to the partnership with SEBRAE, Small Business Service Supporting, located in the State of São Paulo. This institution provided the data basis for this research and its final version was compound by 662 enterprises and 33 variables, which were collected from a survey done by SEBRAE and the related enterprise. For first time available for research like this The research was supported by econometrics models, more precisely duration models, which identified the most important factors regarding enterprises survival. Two enterprise groups were distinguished: that one that will survive and grow and another will fail. In this work, three models were used: parametric, non-parametric and proportional risk with all of them presenting similar results. The proportional risk approach was applied for economic sectors and enterprises size. For the micro size business, the entrepreneurship\'s age and the resources applied on the employee\'s qualification were important to reduce the risk to fail in the time, whereas for small enterprises, variables like innovation and business plan building were the most important variables. For the commerce and service sectors, the enterprises related to the first one, the enterprises which kept attention on financial results (cash flow) presented lower risk to fail. For service sector, variables such as: entrepreneur\'s age, investment on the employee\'s qualification and enterprise\'s size were the most important variables to explain the difference the risk to fail between the enterprises. Another result presented was the risk to fail, which indicates the likelihood of an enterprise to leave its business activity. In this case, the parametric model using Weibull distribution concluded that the risk grows in the first five years. However, this result must be carefully evaluated since it would be necessary a longer term data to ensure this result.

Hull form design with optimization methods applied to parametric B-Spline curves.

Barbarini, Luiz Henrique Maiorino 09 February 2007 (has links)
This article presents a flexible and efficient tool to the field of ship project and preliminary design by using an approach of parametric modeling of hull forms. The state of the art of design of hulls consists in an iterative process where, first, geometric, stability and hydrodynamic parameters are defined. After that, the hull is modeled through parametric curves, simulated in a performance analysis software, and, after that, it is taken the decision to optimize the initial parameters. The cycle repeats until it reaches the desired result. This work deals with the part of parametric modeling, and is capable to generate, in an automatic way, optimized curves that compose the design of the hull of a yacht. The tool receives high level parameters, such as non-dimensional ratios, coefficients and restrictions, and draws a three-dimensional hull, intrinsically fair, fulfilling all the specified parameters. A methodology for the design of sail-boats is presented together with B-Splines curves, submitted to an optimization algorithm, using fairness criteria as the objective function. The optimization problem of B-Splines curves is not linear, because of its mathematical formulation, the objective function and constraints adopted. Therefore, a method of Sequential Quadratic Programming is used. For the optimization of the main parameters of the hull, a cost-effective methodology, based on the Surface Response Method, is proposed, optimizing a merit criterion, such as, the residuary resistance, changing two parameters of the hull. The interface with CAD software is implemented in order to allow other analyses, such as surface curvature, and the design of the other parts of the boat. The drawing also can be transformed into a solid model, and integrated with a CAM software to be ready for itsmanufacturing.

New optical sources for detection of chemical species in the LWIR

Armougom, Julie 26 October 2018 (has links)
Laser spectrometry by differential absorption is a well-known technique for standoff detection of chemical species in the atmosphere. The longwave infrared region (LWIR), ranging from 8 to 12 µm is particularly interesting because the absorption bands of many chemical species are intense and non-overlapping. In order to detect those species in the LWIR, there is a need for sources that are spectrally narrow, widely tunable, and delivers high energies. The sources based on second order nonlinear optics are the only technology able to meet those requirements. In this work, we will present the experimental results on two parametric architectures that allows emission in the LWIR for lidar measurements. The first one consists in emitting a beam directly in the LWIR by pumping nonlinear crystals with 2 µm pump lasers. The second architecture consists in amplifying the signal and idler beams coming from a 2 µm OPO, before converting them into the LWIR by difference frequency generation. Those sources are based on the association of new technologies and have the potential to offer a viable solution to a lack of sources emitting in the LWIR.

Applications of Quantum Electro-Optic Control and Squeezed Light

Lam, Ping Koy, Ping.Lam@anu.edu.au January 1999 (has links)
In this thesis, we report the observations of optical squeezing from second harmonic generation (SHG), optical parametric oscillation (OPO) and optical parametric amplification (OPA). Demonstrations and proposals of applications involving the squeezed light and electro-optic control loops are presented. ¶ In our SHG setup, we report the observation of 2.1 dB of intensity squeezing on the second harmonic (SH) output. Investigations into the system show that the squeezing performance of a SHG system is critically affected by the pump noise and a modular theory of noise propagation is developed to describe and quantify this effect. Our experimental data has also shown that in a low-loss SHG system, intra-cavity nondegenerate OPO modes can simultaneously occur. This competition of nonlinear processes leads to the optical clamping of the SH output power and in general can degrade the SH squeezing. We model this competition and show that it imposes a limit to the observable SH squeezing. Proposals for minimizing the effect of competition are presented. ¶ In our OPO setup, we report the observation of 7.1 dB of vacuum squeezing and more than 4 dB of intensity squeezing when the OPO is operating as a parametric amplifier. We present the design criteria and discuss the limits to the observable squeezing from the OPO.We attribute the large amount of squeezing obtained in our experiment to the high escape efficiency of the OPO. The effect of phase jitter on the squeezing of the vacuum state is modeled. ¶ The quantum noise performance of an electro-optic feedforward control loop is investigated. With classical coherent inputs, we demonstrate that vacuum fluctuations introduced at the beam splitter of the control loop can be completely cancelled by an optimum amount of positive feedforward. The cancellation of vacuum fluctuations leads to the possibility of noiseless signal amplification with the feedforward loop. Comparison shows that the feedforward amplifier is superior or at least comparable in performance with other noiseless amplification schemes. When combined with an injection-locked non-planar ring Nd:YAG laser, we demonstrate that signal and power amplifications can both be noiseless and independently variable. ¶ Using squeezed inputs to the feedforward control loop, we demonstrate that information carrying squeezed states can be made robust to large downstream transmission losses via a noiseless signal amplification. We show that the combination of a squeezed vacuum meter input and a feedforward loop is a quantum nondemolition (QND) device, with the feedforward loop providing an additional improvement on the transfer of signal. In general, the use of a squeezed vacuum meter input and an electro-optic feedforward loop can provide pre- and post- enhancements to many existing QND schemes. ¶ Finally, we proposed that the quantum teleportation of a continuous-wave optical state can be achieved using a pair of phase and amplitude electro-optic feedforward loops with two orthogonal quadrature squeezed inputs. The signal transfer and quantum correlation of the teleported optical state are analysed. We show that a two dimensional diagram, similar to the QND figures of merits, can be used to quantify the performance of a teleporter.

Nanosecond optical parametric oscillators and amplifiers based on periodically poled KTiOPO4

Hellström, Jonas January 2001 (has links)
Optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) and optical parametricamplifiers (OPAs) constitute a class of optical frequencyconverting devices that have many possible applications, e.g.in range finding, molecular spectroscopy and medicine. They canconvert the frequency of the incident pump field with highefficiency, and generate two waves at new frequencies that willbe continuously tuneable over a wide spectral range. Virtuallyany wavelengths within the transparency region of the nonlinearmaterial can be generated if the material can bequasi-phasematched (QPM). In addition, QPM gives thepossibility to utilise the largest nonlinear tensor element ofthe material and allows walk-off free interaction between thewaves. The aims of this thesis have been to investigate thepossibility to use QPM KTiOPO4crystals as nonlinear material in nanosecond OPOsand OPAs operating at room-temperature, and to explore theadvantages and shortcomings of these devices. The technique ofelectric field poling has been employed to implement the QPMstructure in flux grown KTiOPO4(KTP). The main conclusion is that periodically poled KTP (PPKTP)is a suitable material to use in nanosecond OPOs and OPAs. Thematerial properties that foremost make KTP into an attractivenonlinear material are: The large value of the nonlinearcoefficient d33, the high resistance to optically inducedbreakdown, the low susceptibility to grey-track formation, theinsensitivity to the photorefractive effect, the widetransparency and the low coercive field. The thesis shows that it is possible to pole large volumesof KTP with a high quality of the QPM structure. Highlyefficient nanosecond OPOs have been constructed during thisproject. Maximum conversion efficiencies have reached 45 % inthe case of a singly resonant OPO (SRO) built around a 3 mmthick PPKTP crystal. Total pulse energies for both the signal(1.72 µm) and the idler (2.8 µm) of up to 18 mJ wasreached and an average output power of 2 W was obtained forthis sample. However, up to 24 W was produced in a doublyresonant OPO operating close to degeneracy. The efficiencyreached 48 % for that case. Truly continuous and very widespectral tuning has also been demonstrated, as well as a narrowbandwidth OPO operating on one single longitudinal mode. <b>Keywords:</b>optical parametric oscillators, opticalparametric amplifiers, quasi-phasematching, KTiOPO4, nonlinear optics, frequency conversion, periodicelectric field poling, ferroelectrics, high-order secondharmonic generation, electro-optic effect.

Secondary Electromagnetic Radiation Generated by HF Pumping of the Ionosphere

Norin, Lars January 2008 (has links)
Electromagnetic waves can be used to transmit information over long distances and are therefore often employed for communication purposes. The electromagnetic waves are reflected off material objects on their paths and interact with the medium through which they propagate. For instance, the plasma in the ionosphere can refract and even reflect radio waves propagating through it. By increasing the power of radio waves injected into the ionosphere, the waves start to modify the plasma, resulting in the generation of a wide range of nonlinear processes, including turbulence, in particular near the reflection region. By systematically varying the injected radio waves in terms of frequency, power, polarisation, duty cycle, inclination, etc. the ionosphere can be used as an outdoor laboratory for investigating fundamental properties of the near-Earth space environment as well as of plasma turbulence. In such ionospheric modification experiments, it has been discovered that the irradiation of the ionosphere by powerful radio waves leads to the formation of plasma density structures and to the emission of secondary electromagnetic radiation, a phenomenon known as stimulated electromagnetic emission. These processes are highly repeatable and have enabled systematic investigations of the nonlinear properties of the ionospheric plasma. In this thesis we investigate features of the plasma density structures and the secondary electromagnetic radiation. In a theoretical study we analyse a certain aspect of the formation of the plasma structures. The transient dynamics of the secondary radiation is investigated experimentally in a series of papers, focussing on the initial stage as well as on the decay. In one of the papers we use the transient dynamics of the secondary radiation to reveal the intimate relation between certain features of the radiation and structures of certain scales. Further, we present measurements of unprecedentedly strong secondary radiation, attributed to stimulated Brillouin scattering, and report measurements of the secondary radiation using a novel technique imposed on the transmitted radio waves.
