Nanosecond optical parametric oscillators and amplifiers based on periodically poled KTiOPO4

Hellström, Jonas January 2001 (has links)
<p>Optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) and optical parametricamplifiers (OPAs) constitute a class of optical frequencyconverting devices that have many possible applications, e.g.in range finding, molecular spectroscopy and medicine. They canconvert the frequency of the incident pump field with highefficiency, and generate two waves at new frequencies that willbe continuously tuneable over a wide spectral range. Virtuallyany wavelengths within the transparency region of the nonlinearmaterial can be generated if the material can bequasi-phasematched (QPM). In addition, QPM gives thepossibility to utilise the largest nonlinear tensor element ofthe material and allows walk-off free interaction between thewaves.</p><p>The aims of this thesis have been to investigate thepossibility to use QPM KTiOPO4crystals as nonlinear material in nanosecond OPOsand OPAs operating at room-temperature, and to explore theadvantages and shortcomings of these devices. The technique ofelectric field poling has been employed to implement the QPMstructure in flux grown KTiOPO4(KTP).</p><p>The main conclusion is that periodically poled KTP (PPKTP)is a suitable material to use in nanosecond OPOs and OPAs. Thematerial properties that foremost make KTP into an attractivenonlinear material are: The large value of the nonlinearcoefficient d33, the high resistance to optically inducedbreakdown, the low susceptibility to grey-track formation, theinsensitivity to the photorefractive effect, the widetransparency and the low coercive field.</p><p>The thesis shows that it is possible to pole large volumesof KTP with a high quality of the QPM structure. Highlyefficient nanosecond OPOs have been constructed during thisproject. Maximum conversion efficiencies have reached 45 % inthe case of a singly resonant OPO (SRO) built around a 3 mmthick PPKTP crystal. Total pulse energies for both the signal(1.72 µm) and the idler (2.8 µm) of up to 18 mJ wasreached and an average output power of 2 W was obtained forthis sample. However, up to 24 W was produced in a doublyresonant OPO operating close to degeneracy. The efficiencyreached 48 % for that case. Truly continuous and very widespectral tuning has also been demonstrated, as well as a narrowbandwidth OPO operating on one single longitudinal mode.</p><p><b>Keywords:</b>optical parametric oscillators, opticalparametric amplifiers, quasi-phasematching, KTiOPO4, nonlinear optics, frequency conversion, periodicelectric field poling, ferroelectrics, high-order secondharmonic generation, electro-optic effect.</p>

In doctoral thesis redundant systems and degradation models are considered. Modelos de duração aplicados à sobrevivência das empresas paulistas entre 2003 e 2007 / Duration models applied to survival enterprises of São Paulo state between 2003 to 2007

André Luis Pavão 22 May 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents the main results that determined the bankruptcy of enterprises located in the São Paulo State from 2003 to 2007. The models used in this work were possible due to the partnership with SEBRAE, Small Business Service Supporting, located in the State of São Paulo. This institution provided the data basis for this research and its final version was compound by 662 enterprises and 33 variables, which were collected from a survey done by SEBRAE and the related enterprise. For first time available for research like this The research was supported by econometrics models, more precisely duration models, which identified the most important factors regarding enterprises survival. Two enterprise groups were distinguished: that one that will survive and grow and another will fail. In this work, three models were used: parametric, non-parametric and proportional risk with all of them presenting similar results. The proportional risk approach was applied for economic sectors and enterprises size. For the micro size business, the entrepreneurship\'s age and the resources applied on the employee\'s qualification were important to reduce the risk to fail in the time, whereas for small enterprises, variables like innovation and business plan building were the most important variables. For the commerce and service sectors, the enterprises related to the first one, the enterprises which kept attention on financial results (cash flow) presented lower risk to fail. For service sector, variables such as: entrepreneur\'s age, investment on the employee\'s qualification and enterprise\'s size were the most important variables to explain the difference the risk to fail between the enterprises. Another result presented was the risk to fail, which indicates the likelihood of an enterprise to leave its business activity. In this case, the parametric model using Weibull distribution concluded that the risk grows in the first five years. However, this result must be carefully evaluated since it would be necessary a longer term data to ensure this result.

Utilisation de copules paramétriques en présence de données observationnelles : cadre théorique et modélisations. / Use of parametric copulas with observational data : theoretical framework and modelizations.

Fontaine, Charles 19 September 2016 (has links)
Observational studies (non-randomized) consist primarily of data with features that are in fact constraining within a classical statistical framework. Indeed, in this type of study, data are rarely continuous, complete, and independent of the therapeutic arm the observations are belonging to. This thesis deals with the use of a parametric statistical tool based on the dependence between the data, using several scenarios related to observational studies. Indeed, thanks to the theorem of Sklar (1959), parametric copulas have become a topic of interest in biostatistics. To begin with, we present the basic concepts of copulas, as well as the main measures of association based on the concordance founded on an analysis of the literature. Then, we give three examples of application of models of parametric copulas for as many cases of specific data found in observational studies. We first propose a strategy of modeling cost-effectiveness analysis based essentially on rewriting the joint distribution functions, while discarding the use of linear regression models. We then study the constraints relative to discrete data, particularly in a context of non-unicity of the copula function. We rewrite the propensity score, thanks to an innovative approach based on the extension of a sub-copula. Finally, we introduce a particular type of missing data: right censored data, in a regression context, through the use of semi-parametric copulas.

Asymptotic properties of Non-parametric Regression with Beta Kernels

Natarajan, Balasubramaniam January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Statistics / Weixing Song / Kernel based non-parametric regression is a popular statistical tool to identify the relationship between response and predictor variables when standard parametric regression models are not appropriate. The efficacy of kernel based methods depend both on the kernel choice and the smoothing parameter. With insufficient smoothing, the resulting regression estimate is too rough and with excessive smoothing, important features of the underlying relationship is lost. While the choice of the kernel has been shown to have less of an effect on the quality of regression estimate, it is important to choose kernels to best match the support set of the underlying predictor variables. In the past few decades, there have been multiple efforts to quantify the properties of asymmetric kernel density and regression estimators. Unlike classic symmetric kernel based estimators, asymmetric kernels do not suffer from boundary problems. For example, Beta kernel estimates are especially suitable for investigating the distribution structure of predictor variables with compact support. In this dissertation, two types of Beta kernel based non parametric regression estimators are proposed and analyzed. First, a Nadaraya-Watson type Beta kernel estimator is introduced within the regression setup followed by a local linear regression estimator based on Beta kernels. For both these regression estimators, a comprehensive analysis of its large sample properties is presented. Specifically, for the first time, the asymptotic normality and the uniform almost sure convergence results for the new estimators are established. Additionally, general guidelines for bandwidth selection is provided. The finite sample performance of the proposed estimator is evaluated via both a simulation study and a real data application. The results presented and validated in this dissertation help advance the understanding and use of Beta kernel based methods in other non-parametric regression applications.

Parametric Design & an Approach to Weight Optimization of a Metallic and Carbon Fiber Wing

Joe, John 08 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / In a multifidelity structural design process, depending on the required analysis, different levels of structural models are needed. Within the aerospace design, analysis and optimization community, there is an increasing demand for automatic generation of parametric feature tree (build recipe) attributed multidisciplinary models. Currently, this is mainly done by creating separate models for different disciplines such as mid-surface model for aeroelasticity, outer-mold line for aerodynamics and CFD, and built-up element model for structural analysis. Since all of these models are built independently, any changes in design parameters require updates on all the models which is inefficient, time-consuming and prone to deficiencies. In this research, Engineering Sketch Pad (ESP) is used to create attribution and maintain consistency between structural models with different fidelity levels. It provides the user with the ability to interact with a configuration by building and/or modifying the design parameters and feature tree that define the configuration. ESP is based an open-source constructive solid modeler, named OpenCSM, which is built upon the OpenCASCADE geometry kernel and the EGADS geometry generation system. The use of OpenCSM as part of the AFRL’s CAPS project on Computational Aircraft Prototype Syntheses for automatic commercial and fighter jet models is demonstrated. The rapid generation of parametric aircraft structural models proposed and developed in this work will benefit the aerospace industry with coming up with efficient, fast and robust multidisciplinary design standardization of aircraft structures. Metallic aircraft wings are usually not optimized to their fullest potential due to shortage of development time. With roughly \$1000 worth of potential fuel savings per pound of weight reduction over the operational life of an aircraft, airlines are trying to minimize the weight of aircraft structures. A stiffness based strategy is used to map the nodal data of the lower-order fidelity structural models onto the higher-order ones. A simple multi-fidelity analysis process for a parametric wing is used to demonstrate the advantage of the approach. The loads on the wing are applied from a stick model as is done in the industry. C program is created to connect the parametric design software ESP, analysis software Nastran, load file and design configuration file in CSV format. This problem gets compounded when it comes to optimization of composite wings. In this study, a multi-level optimization strategy to optimize the weight of a composite transport aircraft wing is proposed. The part is assumed to initially have some arbitrary number of composite super plies. Super plies are a concept consisting of a set of plies all arranged in the same direction. The thickness and orientation angles of the super plies are optimized. Then, each ply undergoes topometry optimization to obtain the areas of each super ply taking the least load so that it could be cut and removed. Each of the super plies are then optimized for the thickness and orientation angles of the sub plies. The work presented on this paper is part of a project done for Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) connecting the parametric geometry modeler (ESP) with the finite element solver (Nastran).

Parametric design and optimization of steel and timber truss structures : Development of a workflow for design and optimization processes in Grasshopper 3D environment

WELDEGIORGIS, FILMON, DHUNGANA, ANUP RAJ January 2020 (has links)
The demand for complex structures and the urge to perform more detailed structural analyses in an early stage of the project design phase has increased the use of parametric design in the construction sector, especially among architects and structural engineers. Also, an increasing demand for sustainable structures is creating pressure on engineers and architects to design optimized structures that consume as little resources as possible. Keeping these demands in mind, this thesis tries to uncover the benefits of parametric design and optimization by applying these processes to industrial roof truss structures. The primary objective of the thesis is to investigate the feasibility and reliability of parametric design and optimization processes in real-life designs. For this purpose, a parametric algorithm has been developed in the visual programming software Grasshopper 3D. The workflow performs structural analysis and design verification on a parametric FE-model using the FEA software for parametric engineering, Karamba 3D in combination with Python where standards for design verification were scripted. These procedures were developed to be applied on both steel and timber truss structures. The workflow then performs a constrained cross-sectional and geometrical optimization of the truss structures. For the optimization process, the plug-in Galapagos have been used which uses evolutionary and simulated annealing techniques. After analyses of different cases and on comparison of the results from the model response verification, the resulting models showed that the workflow and analysis procedure was capable of obtaining a solution that is more effective and as reliable as the traditional structural analysis procedures and thus can be used for real case. When used during preliminary design, the parametric design procedure displayed great potential in saving time, thus saving resources and cost which paves a promising path for implementations in this sector.
