This study investigates the motivations for the choice of neo-paganism as a religion by individuals of different contexts in the city of Rio de Janeiro and surrounding areas. Neopagan rituals and public events in the city were ethnographed during the period 2012-2014. Interviews were conducted and analyzed their religious literature. The research focused mainly on the activities and experiences of the Chuva Vernal Coven, a group of Shamanic Wicca. As a conclusion we suggest two main hypotheses about which factors explain the motivation to join and stay in this religion: the logic of distinction, discussed by Simmel, and the concept of project identity, used by Manuel Castells.

The rising of the New Age movement, from the countercultural movements of contestation that emerged in the 1960s, represented the emergence of a “new religious conscience” in the contemporary Western world. In Alto Paraíso de Goiás, place of new age convergence, this alternative religiosity continues to relate to the counterculture, especially under its hippie version. This environment becomes the stage for religious experimentations of alternative Christian groups, who, through elective affinities perceived between the neoesoteric world, which includes the rastafari group, and Christianity, make their negotiations of meaning towards a religious living capable of conjugating the Christian message with the alternative and neoesoteric style. The negotiations of meaning happen through the Christian presence in the boundary environment of Alto Paraíso and through the personal and daily contacts between the evangelical and neoesoteric groups. The ethnographic research aims to show how these negotiations are made between the evangelical and neoesoteric groups, as well as the ritual and aesthetic experiences which combine elements from these two cultural universes. The bricolage, in this case, is oriented by a sensibility which imposes limits to the possibilities of evangelical appropriation of the neoesoteric contents and symbolic elements.

This dissertation aims to present and analyze how traditionally Christian/Catholic contents are re-articulated within interpretations and New Age practices. The study seeks to understand the joints and tensions between New Age and Christianity, starting from the thought of Trigueirinho Netto, author of dozens of books on spirituality and esotericism, with content ranging from life on other planets to reinterpretations of Christ's crucifixion. Trigueirinho is the founder of a rural alternative community, the Comunidade Figueira, and the founder of the Ordem Graça Misericórdia, created in conjunction with friars and nuns seers at the request of Our Lady. In addition to the alternative community, urban groups of followers accompanying lectures of leaders and apparitions of Mary through the internet. Thus, the dissertation is based on the analysis of Trigueirinho cosmology, the Ordem Graça Misericórdia, by two ethnographies: the first, on the urban group of followers, and the second, on-line, on Mary's appearance celebration.

Previous issue date: 2008-05-29 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The New Age movement, primarily an urban phenomenon accepted by
groups with an effervescent intellectual stance, made possible the reinvention
of paganism. The cosmopolitan and globalized city of SãoPaulo is home to a
variety of neo-pagan practices. The objective of this study is to verify how one
group of contemporary druids, members of the BDO/Druidnetwork, experience
their daily lives and spacialize a religiosity that is informed by the imaginary of
the ancient Celts. An initial hypothesis was that practitioners initially became
acquainted with Neo-druidism due to the massive spread, since the 1980s in
Brazil, of literary and cinematic works about the Arthurian period. Fieldwork and
analysis of interviews showed that this religious path is not directly related to
such products but rather to an imminent need for a spirituality that
comprehends human being/human nature and that breaks with the institutional
character of traditional religions. Anxious for this reconnection, contemporary
druids sacralize the landscape by adapting it to their immediate needs and
expressing their concern with the natural world daily and discretely. They
exchange experiences and lessons, in physical, mental and virtual spaces,
confident in the emergence of a more just and harmonious society in the future / A Nova Era, movimento característico dos centros urbanos e aceito por
harmoniosa

Previous issue date: 2010-05-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The objective of this dissertation is to discuss the religious elements in
the work of Indian physicist Amit Goswami. Goswami became a familiar figure in the
New Age movement because of his proposal to interpret quantum mechanics −based
on the idea of a non-local and transcendent conscience as the foundation of reality −
and for his advocacy of a synthesis between spirituality and scientific discourse. The
text begins with a history of connections between science and religion proposed
since the mid 19th century until the rise of New Age in the 1970s. Its main focus is
the dialogue between science and religion which began to be settled with the
development of quantum mechanics. The dissertation approaches the work of
Goswami with the intent of highlighting its main ideas: the criticism of materialist
realism, the mystical origin of religions, their inability to adequately convey the
essential truth of the mystical experience, his confidence that certain experiments
could support the belief in a transcendent dimension of reality and the moral crisis
experienced by modern societies. Next, the dissertation uses the definition of religion
proposed by Geertz and makes evident the religious element of Goswami´s speech
characterized by its quest to link cosmology and ethos in order to substantiate a new
ethic for contemporary societies. Finally, Hanegraaff´s definitions of spirituality and
religion allow distinguish his Goswami s work as an example of spirituality based on
a secular symbolic system / O objetivo desta dissertação é discutir o elemento religioso presente na
obra do físico indiano Amit Goswami.

Previous issue date: 2007-12-14 / The objective of this study is to investigate the permanent process of searching for
the holy through experience within New Age s context. It also tried to look for the
causes of the beginning of that phenomenon in the rationalistic western society. It
was tried to clarify the relationship between a highly scientific, technological and
informative society and a Movement that aims to live a mystical bodily and
emotionally experience outside conventional religions. It was also studied how
western rationalistic thought was built, its influences in religions and in which way it
was established in the world what we call post-modernism. It was possible to analyze
how this Movement fits in global and pluricultural contemporaneous societies. The
study showed that this is an urban peregrination Movement without a settled place
keeping as the main goal the own search itself. The results indicate that this
Movement has within its essence the proposal of living according to an epistemology
that accepts emotions and body sensations as the necessary basis to obtain
knowledge and give meaning to the world. The New Age Movement has revealed
itself as a constructor of a post-modern ontology where Being is defined especially
by feelings.
sagrado, via experimentação, no universo do Movimento Nova Era. Pretendeu
sentir.

To this end, 292 questionnaires were applied in naturologists graduated by the two Brazilian universities with Naturology courses recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Education. In order to measure the degree of adherence to the New Age movement, a Likert scale was applied with 25 items related to major trends of the New Age movement highlighted by Hanegraaff. The results showed 51.7% of the naturologists objectively consider themselves newagers, and the active naturologists are precisely those who demonstrate the greatest degree of identification with the title. It was also verified that the Likert scale results were high in all categories, with averages exceeding 3 (out of 4) / A presente dissertação objetivou investigar as relações entre a Naturologia no Brasil e o mo-vimento da Nova Era, partindo da hipótese levantada por Teixeira de que o surgimento da Na-turologia no Brasil estaria relacionado à chegada da Nova Era ao país.

This dissertation had as the purpose of analyzing a modality peculiar comportamental, built during the last three decades of the century XX and that it can be apprehended through the movement New Era. For this modality it could be observed the subjective construction of mechanisms of answers and of interpretation of the reality that resulted in attitudes and or in an ethics comportamental capable to translate the new challenges that the current reality - denominated by some theoreticals as being a post-modern reality - it puts for the individual. Though, it can be verified that such mechanisms of answers, when confronted with the process of human alienation, they become a modality of individual answer which the critical potential is at the superficial level, reinforcing a process of the individualþs privatizations.

Previous issue date: 2002-11-30 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The Sacred Circle Dance is a contemporary practice of dance which aims to rescue its primordial function when it was incorporated to an integrate complex called Music-Dance-Prayer; its original function is self-knowledge and transcendence. German born Benhard Wosien started the Movement in the 70´s and The Spiritual Community of Findhorn in the northeast of Scotland spread these practices throughout the world. The Movement was born during the emerging of the New Age culture. This work is an exploratory study of the historic-practical dimension of this Movement; it is an attempt to identifiy its traditional origin as well as trying to find its relation with the phenomenological aspects of the Sacred in Rudolf Otto, Mircea Eliade and Ninian Smart. Therefore, the origins of the Circle Dance as well as the contemporary correlative movements throughout history have been investigated. Besides the bibliographic study, a qualitative investigation with ten Brazilian facilitators from different regions of that country was carried out aiming to describe not only their profile but mainly their relation with the numinous. The conclusion is that there is a tendency to reintegrate with the original complex Music-Dance-Prayer and only the Fascinans, the most common aspect of the numinous has been present.

This research refers to a socio-anthropological study of contemporary
therapeutic spiritualities. After defining a specific circuit composed by the group Meditation
Sahaja Yoga, Worshiping place Peregrinos da Luz Divina Pai Benedito and Reiki therapy
(Espaço Plenitude and Instituto Seva) it was observed from the sayings and practices that
therapeutic spiritualities are part of the New Age phenomenon. Thus, the work has as one of
the objectives to list the common elements which are present in the circuit that are consistent
with the phenomenon, namely: holistic and vitalistic fundamentals, transcultural and hybrid
nature, occidental orientation, psychological, experimentalist and idiosyncratic language, new
religious consciousness. Supported by a hermeneutic and phenomenological perspective we
attempted to demonstrate how therapeutic spiritualities foster the construction of an
integrative corporeality as well as a set of gentle techniques of integrative character. Both
integrative corporeality and the study of spiritual techniques were placed in opposition to
dualistic corporeality that emerges with modern conceptions of body and instrumental rational
perspective of biomedicine, and, to some extent, with the hegemonic representations in
official religious circles. We conclude that the phenomenon of therapeutic spiritualities that
emerge amid a crisis of institutions that produce meaning collaborate to build new patterns of
behavior, new symbolic codes, new sensibilities conforming another somatic culture
grounded in holistic and vitalist principles with contra-modern and post-traditional traits.
holistas e vitalistas, caráter transcultural e híbrido, orientalização do ocidente, linguagem
Tanto a
