From the difficulties encountered as a novice teacher in elementary, we deem important to research training needs of these professionals. Thus, we define the objective of this research to investigate the training needs of novice teachers teaching Early Childhood Education/Elementary school. Our work fits in Educational Research Qualitative Approach, and its construction procedures of the semistructured interview data and document analysis. Our empirical field was made up of schools in the metropolitan region of Natal / RN, offering kindergarten / elementary school. The subjects are five teachers who act as holder of the elementary school class and have 0-3 years of teaching practice, characterizing the second Huberman (2007) as novice teachers. Data analysis, based on principles of content analysis, three themes emerged: Beginner Teaching Professor in Early Childhood Education / Preschool; Reasons explaining the difficulties Faculty / Formative Needs Teaching and Training in Early Childhood Education / Elementary school, from the Training Needs Analysis, with their respective categories, subcategories, contributing to our understanding of the subject matter. The entry into the profession is marked by mixed feelings of euphoria and fear, where there seems to be a "clash" with reality. The difficulties are related to the planning / execution of activities, meet the individual needs of learning and assessment of children. As a strategy to overcome the difficulties the teachers exercise the action-reflection-action in their practices and seek continuous updates in the theoretical and methodological framework of early childhood education. The reasons that define these difficulties may be related to the teacher, school, family, and students of these institutions. In experiencing these difficulties has outlined the need for teacher training, among which stand out studies on ethics in teaching with children, the concept of children and their childhoods, peculiarities of teaching / learning in preschool, toys and legal determinations on early childhood education, multi-language and expressions in early childhood education, specific content areas of knowledge, among others. Furthermore, studies on the theoretical as Piaget, Vigotsky, Maria Carmen Barbosa and Emily Smith. For these professionals to be a professional early childhood education is: like children, be patient and careful, have specific theoretical and practical training for teachers in kindergarten, being able to improvise with seriousness and competence and get updates on continuing education. The surveys, together with the authors and teachers, to confirm our understanding that the training needs of beginners may be related to shortcomings in the initial and continuing education / Este trabalho se originou das nossas preocupa??es com as quest?es relativas ? forma??o do professor de educa??o infantil.

DESENVOLVIMENTO PROFISSIONAL DE PROFESSORES PRINCIPIANTES E OS MOVIMENTOS PARA A ASSUNÇÃO DA PROFISSÃO DOCENTE / PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF NOVICE TEACHERS AND THE ASCENSION MOVEMENTS IN THE TEACHING PROFESSION

Lichtenecker, Margarete Schmoel 07 May 2010 (has links)
This study is related to the Education Post - graduation Program at Education Center of Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM)- Education Master Degree research line of Formation, knowledge and professional Development . It has been developed as a research project Dilemmas and perspectives for the educational innovation in the basic education and teacher formation and is also part of the Research Group, Researches and Interventions Educational Innovation, Educative Practices and Teacher Formation between 2008 and 2010. In order to do this, we chose to answer the following research question: which aspects are part of the professional developing process of novice teachers? The information collected and the method used to deal with this information fit in the qualitative approach. The present study involved eighteen Pedagogical coordinators (PC) and twenty-three Novice Teachers (NT), that work in Public institutions of basic education in the municipality of Santa Maria/RS, part of the State Public School System. As data collection instruments for the PC we questionnaire using a structured and mixed script with opened as well as closed questions and, for NT, a structured interview. With the intention of organize the obtained information the technique of the Collective Subject was utilized. For the analysis of all information organized we use as support some orientations from Content Analysis, proposed by L. Bardin. From this analysis and information obtained with PC and NT was possible to perceive that Basic Education Schools (BES) welcome properly the novice teachers, but neither plan nor develop specific actions for orientation of the teaching work, and also don t promote activities aiming professional development of the novice teachers, moreover, they receive the same orientations and participate of the same activities that experienced teachers do, such as pedagogical meetings, celebration events or social participations. In relation to the teaching learning, the NT point as the main criteria the need for mix theory learned in the formation courses with practice and also understand that the teaching learning is a continuous process. Besides, for the aspects that characterize the professional development of novice teachers, is clear, for both NT and PC declarations that is through continuous formation that learning happens, because according to PC the process of continuous formation provide to know new learning strategies and methodologies, showing to be interested in analyze new teaching proposals. Due to this we understand that they challenge themselves to learn, confirming that professional development and teaching learning, for these groups, are continuous and parallel. The investment in their own formation is a strong characteristic in the professional development of the groups in the study, it means, the NT known the investment in the formation is related to their professional development, whose actions, even individual, can be noticed since the choice of a profession until its ascension. When talking about being professionals, NT said the ascension occurred in different moments, mainly in the graduation, pre-professional trainingship, intership and after the stability in the profession. It is understood that professional development is for many times made of come and go, difficult situations, continuous and discontinuous moments, which may happen when assuming the profession, because as the development takes place the ascension is being consolidated.

Relationship Between Novice Teachers' Perceptions of Mentoring Support and Job Satisfaction

Williams, Karen Nichola 01 January 2018 (has links)
Low job satisfaction among novice teachers is a problem that has become a concern for administrators at school districts, advancing the need for effective mentoring and induction programs. Induction programs provide opportunities for collaborative relationships through mentoring support to address areas such as professional growth and development, teaching practices, and other challenges faced in the early years of novice teachers' careers. The purpose of this correlational explanatory study was to examine the relationship between mentoring support and novice teachers' job satisfaction at a school district in southern USA. Herzberg's motivation-hygiene theory was the theoretical foundation for the study. The research questions examined the relationships between 3 components of mentoring support (professional growth and development, mentoring, and teaching practices support) and job satisfaction among novice teachers (those with less than 3 years teaching experience) as measured by the Beginning Teachers Survey and the Job in General Survey respectively. The population was comprised of 1,954 teachers who were identified by the district as novice teachers. Of the 114 principals in this district, 32% sent the survey link to the 112 novice teachers at their schools and 78 novice teachers completed the online questionnaire (a response rate of 70%). The Spearman rho coefficient showed moderate, significant relationships for all 3 components of mentoring support. The correlation values in this study ranged from r = .52 to r = .61. This might lead to positive social change by having committed teachers with teaching experience, which would increase students' success. Student success, after all, is the most desirable outcome for students, teachers, and the community. Creating committed teachers requires an effective mentoring support program.

Secondary-School Principals' Perceptions of their Role in the Retention of the Novice Teacher

Coker, Theresa J. 01 January 2017 (has links)
ABSTRACT SECONDARY-SCHOOL PRINCIPALS’ PERCEPTIONS OF THEIR ROLE IN THE RETENTION OF NOVICE TEACHERS Theresa J. Coker Secondary schools in the U.S. face instructional challenges due in part to novice teacher turnover. Research indicates that new teachers remain in the profession due to: supportive principal leadership, an orderly school environment, classroom autonomy, and significant professional development (Grissom, 2008). The purpose of this study was to understand how secondary-school principals perceived their role in novice teachers’ professional development and retention. Qualitative research using in-depth, semi-structured interviews included 15 secondary-school administrators from an urban district in the southeast United States. Data analysis used Eisner’s (1998) four-part approach to educational criticism—description, interpretation, evaluation, and thematics—supported by Hatch’s (2002) typological analysis. Four typologies organized description and interpretation: principals’ early experiences as educators; principals’ perceptions of the recruitment process; principals’ view of the process of professional development; and life and duties of principals. The thematics dimension of educational criticism indicated that principals’ lack of time led to their delegating leadership tasks to other staff regarding novice teachers’ professional development. Their descriptions of their interactions with novice teachers reflected a transactional leadership style and an approach of “leading from the middle” (Bolman & Gallos, 2011) to respond to both demands from above and needs at the school level. Further, these principals perceived all teachers new to their schools as novice, whether experienced or inexperienced. Implications include considering transformational leadership when working with novice teachers and clarifying hiring and retention responsibilities regarding novice teachers. Such communication among all parties would support novice teachers’ development and commitment to the profession. Further research might focus on observing the interactions of both administrators and faculty with novice teachers to understand the complexity of the process of their professional development.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Mary Gracy e Silva Lima.pdf: 1479691 bytes, checksum: 93e26ca81345d3ad09bcdb1b7dae3ca8 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-12-05 / The object of study of the present research is the professional development of novice teachers recently graduated in Pedagogy. This is a qualitative survey carried out at a public college in the state of Maranhão, in the northeast of Brazil. The subjects of the survey were novice teachers, recently graduated from this public institution. The initial questionnaire used with them aimed at a establishing a profile of the group, so that, subsequently, a more reflective narrative interview with them could be carried out. The springboard of this study was the reflective question: How does the professional development of the recently graduated students in Pedagogy happen, based on their initial formation and teaching practice?. Based on this question the general objective was defined: to investigate how the professional development of recently graduated teachers in Pedagogy happen, focusing on needs and perspectives, determined during the course of their teaching practice, with a view to raise formative indicators, so as to contribute to the re-thinking of the syllabus of the Pedagogy Course, taking into consideration a more innovative approach. Based on the findings of this research, it is important to acknowledge that these teachers are in the initial stages of their professional development, which happens gradually, while they go through their professional assignments and training, and that it is based on: (1) the knowledge they acquired in their initial training, (2) the knowledge they acquired through the experiential formation at the school where they teach, (3) the exchange of knowledge with other teachers and (3) the continuity of their academic studies and acquisition of other professional qualifications. The findings show the need to offer a type of formation that enables the teachers to start their career in a more confident and efficient way, mainly concerning the experiences during the teacher s learning opportunities, which should be incorporated as early as the supervised curricular internship. Regarding teacher training processes, this research shows how fundamental it is that Pedagogy courses be (re) though, prioritising the meeting of student s needs and expectations, when they are confronted with the demands of their everyday reality, as well as their concerns related to their future professional development. The present study also points to issues regarding the curriculum and contributes with reflections on possible adjustments to the Political Pedagogical Project, based on the understanding of the challenges and formative needs faced by future teachers and recently graduated teachers. It is also important to highlight the need to prepare novice teachers to articulate theory and practice as one of the means to overcome the challenges faced in their teaching contexts, even more so when one takes into consideration the adversities found in the promotion of being a teacher and professional development programmes in restrictive areas, especially in inland towns in the Brazilian Northeast / Esta pesquisa teve como objeto de estudo o desenvolvimento profissional de professoras iniciantes egressas do Curso de Pedagogia.

Interakční styl začínajícího učitele v procesu budování jeho autority / Interaction style of novice teachers in the process of establishing their authority

Pecoldová, Veronika January 2019 (has links)
This diploma thesis is concerned with authority of a novice teacher based on their usage of his or her interaction style in a classroom. The aim of this thesis is to find out how teachers and their pupils perceive particular interaction styles of a teacher with regard to establishing and using their authority. The theoretical part of this thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter deals with the terms authority and teacher's authority, emphasizing pupils' point of view and in connection with this introduces its classification of authority types. The next chapter inquires into interpersonal behaviour of a teacher, definition of their interaction style and ways of its detection in practise. The third chapter is concerned with the issues of novice teacher emphasizing their problems in interaction with their pupils which can appear at the beginning of their professional career. Practical part is primarily based on a quantitative inquiry implemented with the help of modified standardized questionnaires QTI investigating the interaction style of a teacher. Their task was to give feedback to the teachers who participated in the inquiry and discover how the interaction models of novice teachers differ from their pupils' versions, alternatively among particular classes. The questionnaires were...

The point of departure is that the conditions and the reality for school mathematics can be understood through an analysis of official arguments and of personal arguments given by teacher students and teachers. A longitudinal investigation has been carried out; a group of teacher students has been followed during their teacher education and the first three years after their professional debut. The result shows that during their education the teacher students develop a view on mathematics and mathematics education harmonizing with the goals of mathematics in the national syllabus. The novice teachers have mathematics and sciences as their teaching subjects and they experience quite different conditions when they start to work as teachers. Common for those teaching in school years 7–9 is the experience of pressure to “cover the course” before the pupils shall take the national test in school year 9. Preparing the pupils for the national test becomes the most important goal for the novice teachers. A factor influencing the mathematics teacher is the qualification requirement in mathematics from compulsory school to go into the national programs in the upper secondary school. The novice teachers experience a conflict between different goals in the national curriculum and course syllabus for mathematics. Factors that have an influence on mathematics as a school subject are the organization of teachers at the local schools and the teachers’ combination of teaching subjects.</p>
