Civility, Anonymity and the Breakdown of a New Public Sphere

Santana, Arthur, Santana, Arthur January 2012 (has links)
Reader comment forums of online newspapers, a relatively new feature of online journalism, have been called spaces of public deliberation. At their inception among large newspapers just five years ago, the forums were heralded as a new way for the public to advance public dialogue by sharing opinions in an unconstrained way, promoting the democratic principles of the newspaper institution itself. Rampant incivility, however, has since become one the forums' chief defining characteristics. By content analyzing comments from online newspapers that allow anonymity, this research confirms anecdotal evidence from journalists that Latinos are regularly debased in the forums by commenters following news on immigration. This study also compares the civility of anonymous comments following news on the Tea Party movement, a non-racialized but also controversial topic. Finally, civility is measured in the comments following news on immigration from online newspapers that have disallowed anonymity. In all, more than 22,000 comments from nearly 200 news stories in more than a dozen online newspapers were collected between 2010 and 2012, and a sample of 1,350 was coded. The analysis shows that online newspaper discussion boards that allow anonymity and that follow news about immigration predominantly contain comments by those who support tough immigration laws and who express themselves with emotionally laden, uncivil comments directed at Latinos. Similar discussion boards that disallow anonymity predominantly contain comments by those who support tough immigration laws and who express themselves with emotionally laden yet civil comments directed at Latinos. Overall, this research demonstrates that a racialized topic is apt to draw more uncivil anonymous comments than a non-racialized one and that removing anonymity elevates the level of dialogue. Building on the theories of the public sphere, reduced cues in anonymity and critical race theory, this paper demonstrates that in their new role in creating a new public square of open discussion, newspapers are sometimes creating forums for hate speech while also publishing content that is perpetuating negative portrayals of Latinos. Findings reveal that a new public sphere created by online newspapers, meant to promote democracy, is actually having the opposite effect for some minority groups.

Evigt offer eller alltid gärningsman? : Framställning av invandraren i den nätbaserade dagspressen / Forever victim or always aggressor? : The representation of immigrants in the daily newspapers online reporting

Johansson, Lotta, Svenningsson, Maria January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine how immigrants are portrayed in the Swedish daily newspapers online reporting. The essay investigates in what context immigrants, as individuals, are made visible and how they and their origins are reproduced. The study focuses on the roles victim and aggressor, and is also investigating potential differences between morning and evening newspapers. Present theories are discursive discrimination, critical discourse analysis, cultural racism, stereotypes and structural discrimination. Adopted methods are qualitative and quantitative content analysis, based on the Global Media Monitoring Project-tool. The results show that immigrants are not individually stereotyped or depicted negatively, but that their immigrant origins often have a central part of the story, that they are mentioned mainly in connection with negative news and that negatively charged words occur frequently.

Rewriting for the masses : An analysis on the articles in Nyheter24 during two weeks.

Persson, Pontus January 2015 (has links)
The object of this study was to get a wider picture of the articles published in the Swedish online newspaper Nyheter24. The newspaper is the biggest newspaper only coming out online in Sweden today and basically the idea was to get an overview of their content. The study was based upon two research questions: “What does Nyheter24 write about?” and “What type of journalism does Nyheter24 make?” My research method was a quantitative content analysis and the study contains 550 articles in total, gathered during two weeks time from the website. The results show that Nyheter24 writes about various topics but they tend to produce news stories with an odd or sensational angle. More than half of the articles studied in the news section were rewrites from other news media and less than 20 % of the articles in the same section had quotes from interviews done by the newspaper themselves. In the sports section, just one of all the articles published in the section during the two weeks contained a quote from an interview Nyheter24 had done. The study does also show that investigative journalism is rare at Nyheter24. But it was even more uncommon, zero articles in the news section, for the journalists to do reports of places or news events by going outside the newsroom. What played a bigger part in the news from Nyheter24 was social media. Especially the sports section and the entertainment section published stories where social media was the origin of the story. Generally the results show what several other researchers have found out about online journalism. There is a big recycling of news and the journalists tend to be stuck behind a computer, screening websites and doing rewrites to publish a lot of material quickly. Doing interviews to the stories seemed to have a lower priority.

Studies in Corpora and Idioms : Getting the cat out of the bag

Minugh, David January 2014 (has links)
“Idiomatic” expressions, usually called “idioms”, such as a dime a dozen, a busman’s holiday, or to have bats in your belfry are a curious part of any language: they usually have a fixed lexical (why a busman?) and structural composition (only dime and dozen in direct conjunction mean ‘common, ordinary’), can be semantically obscure (why bats?), yet are widely recognized in the speech community, in spite of being so rare that only large corpora can provide us with access to sufficient empirical data on their use. In this compilation thesis, four published studies focusing on idioms in corpora are presented. Study 1 details the creation of and data in the author’s medium-sized corpus from 1999, the 3.7 million word Coll corpus of online university student newspapers, with comparisons to data from standard corpora of the time. Study 2 examines the extent to which recognized idioms are to be found in the Coll corpus and how they can be varied. Study 3 draws upon the British National Corpus and a series of British and American newspaper corpora to see how idioms may be “anchored” in their contexts, primarily by the device of premodification via an adjective appropriate to the context, not to the idiom. Study 4 examines idiom-usage patterns in the Time Magazine corpus, focusing on possible aspects of diachronic change over the near-century Time represents. The introductory compilation chapter places and discusses these studies in their contexts of contemporary idiom and corpus research; building on these studies, it provides two specific examples of potential ways forward in idiom research: an examination of the idioms used in a specific subgenre of newspapers (editorials), and a detailed suggestion for teachers about how to examine multiple facets of a specific modern idiom (the glass ceiling) in the classroom. Finally, a summing-up includes suggestions for further research, particularly at the level of the patterning of individual idioms, rather than treating them as a homogeneous phenomenon.

It is the context of communication that social representations take shape as elements which are present in social relations, thereby constituting a social reality. On such presupposition, this thesis aims at gaining an understanding of how the local online newspapers Diário dos Campos and Jornal da Manhã, in the city of Ponta Grossa, Paraná (Brazil), addressed issues related to “violence” committed by male teenagers in conflict with the law throughout the year of 2011. The Theory of Social Representations (TSR) was adopted as a theoretical framework, in order to reconstruct the object of research, namely, the social representations of online newspapers. From a methodological point of view, qualitative research was the starting point, and the data were then tabulated following a quantitative research. A total of 65 online newspaper reports on violence committed in 2011 by male teenagers in conflict with the law were catalogued. The analysis of the data was developed in accordance with the research procedure of content analysis, taking into account the frequency of the data in the aforementioned newspapers, and, hence, setting up categories, which were then addressed in light of the Theory of Social Representations (TSR). In its conclusion, the thesis attests that, generally, the social representations in the online newspapers with the law limit the discussion to police issues, thereby discontextualizing the events. Besides, violence is associated with infractional acts, so that violence and crime are seen as synonymous, and this creates a stereotype for these teenagers. Also, social representations have the same way to approach and discuss violence, with little divergence between then.

Evoluzione e definizione dei quotidiani online a confronto con i social media / Evolution and Definition of Online Newspapers in Relation with Social Media

POTA, CHIARA 23 March 2007 (has links)
The research investigates the dynamics and the evolution trends which lead the websites of newspapers to shape an informative offer different compared with the logics belonging to the traditional newspapers. A theoretic frame was designed in order to overcome the technological determinism and embrace, on the other side, the social landscape perspective. The strategies and the dynamics of the online newspapers' evolution and definition have been studied with reference to the social media, identified as emerging actors in the online world, where the citizen is able to activate his strong desire of participation and to share with the other online users the news, as well as the activities which bring to the news' definition. The empiric research, aimed at detecting the Italian online newspapers' answer to the formats and the practices of communications put to use by social media, shows how the publishers are, on the whole, tied to traditional models of journalism, where the editorial unit keeps a strong control on the information spread to the public and on the agenda setting.

The traditional communication vehicles bare today a scenario of uncertainty towards the future. The changes caused by the new media create many possibilities, which can be both threats or new opportunities, that require some reactions from the players in this market. The goal of this study is to identify how the Brazilian daily newspapers are working with the online medium in reaction to these changes. The process to achieve this goal was executed as follows. First, characteristics were identified upon which the main Brazilian print and online newspapers were subsequently classified. Then, a further understanding of the issues was accomplished by interviewing professionals from this market. Finally, based on theoretical concepts from the information economy, a taxonomic structure was built in order to allow a more objective analysis of the newspapers under study. The evaluation of the collected data supported by the information gathered in the interviews resulted in a rich analysis, from which some important conclusions were extracted. For example, a possible relation between the adaption level of the newspaper to the online medium and the category of its content. Another finding is the great importance that the print medium still has in terms of financial outcome for the newspapers. The expectations for the future of the news market are vast, but full of uncertainties. Despite that, one thing seems to be clear: it is important to start building a strong brand based on credibility. In the future, regardless of which business models shall prevail, this will be an important differentiation for the survival of newspapers.

The international flow of news regarding the 2003 Irag War : a comparative analysis

Louw, Ivonne Petronella 01 1900 (has links)
This comparative study conducted within the framework of world system theory aimed to analyse the international flow of news regarding the 2003 Iraq War in online newspapers representative of centre, semi-peripheral and peripheral countries. Two of the newspapers represent centre nations directly involved in the war. Overall, the findings confirmed that the extensive war coverage of the newspapers can in part be attributed to the status of the USA and the UK as centre nations. The findings furthermore indicate the importance of both event and context-related factors as filters in the selection of items for news coverage of the war. Distinct differences emerged in the coverage of newspapers from the three spheres of the world system. These differences can be ascribed to the attitudes of the newspapers towards the war, the use of sources in the war coverage, the propaganda strategies deployed and the framing of the events / Communication Science / M.
