Ferreira, Thales Brandão 29 May 2017 (has links)
Despite the modernization of retail and urban growth, free trade shows continue to be a space of sociability in an economic, social and cultural dynamic. The central problem of the research was to understand if the communication interactions adopted by the FLV (fruits, vegetables and greens) marketers have influenced the perception of the customers under the market compound, in the free fair of Paripiranga-BA. The city fair takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays, and the configuration of this work is limited to researching the marketers and shoppers who circulate in commerce earlier in the week, that is, on Tuesdays. The fundamental hypothesis of the work, oriented to the marketers selling fruits and vegetables was due to the preference of the customers for free markets, to have the belief that the foods sold there are always fresh and of superior quality, besides being negotiable. This space of commerce is generally the heart of the fair, place of greater flow of customers and with a high degree of communication and marketing. The justification for studying this outdoor trade comes from its historical representativeness through symbolic elements that reflect the memory and cultural value of the region, also highlighting the commercial movement, since the city is located on the border between Sergipe and Bahia, A large number of marketers from the surrounding regions of the two States. The main objective of the research was to evaluate the communication interactions of the fruit, vegetable and greens vendors (FLV), at the point of sale, based on the perception of the customers before the market compound, at the free fair of the city of Paripiranga-BA. The theoretical framework of marketing management (marketing concept, customer value, marketing compound, commodities and service marketing) and communication (questions of communication interactions: popular, verbal and non-verbal) was adopted for this clipping. Methodologically, participant observation techniques and interviews were carried out. It was a 15-month ethnographic study of the marketing and communications practices of 8 (eight) marketers with anthropological perspective (sociability, photographs and notes in field journals) and an analysis of the consumption behavior of 65 (sixty five) customers. The results obtained through observation, dialogue with the marketers and records of images revealed that verbal communication through orality becomes more evident in the negotiation process, modifying the way of communicating, organizing and selling, because the products Commercialized in the segment of FLV (fruits, vegetables and greens) are not fresh due to the movement of the fair to other fairs.

Kleinplasie living open air museum: a biography of a site and the processes of history-making 1974 – 1994

Jonas, Michael Jesaja January 2012 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / In 1974 an Agricultural Museum Committee was established at the Worcester Museum which ultimately led to the development in 1981 of the Kleinplasie Open Air Farm Museum. This began a new phase in the museum’s history, one that I will argue was particularly closely linked to Afrikaner nationalist historiography, in particular to ideas about frontier farmers and pioneer farming lifestyles and activities. This study will take the form of a critical analysis of the establishment of Kleinplasie Living Open Air Museum from 1974 until 1994. It will evaluate the making of exhibitions, its architecture, and the performances and public activities in the establishment of the institution as a site of memory and knowledge. The key question this work engages with is how representations, performance, exhibitions, museum activities, and public involvement were shaped to create particular messages and construct a site of cultural identity and memory at Kleinplasie Living Open Air Museum. It will also deal with questions around who decides on the voices and content of the exhibitions, architecture and displays. The role played by professionals, those who claim to represent community, donors and other interests groups will also be placed under the spotlight. There are also questions around the provenance of collections, the way they were acquired through donations and sponsorships, and the crucial role objects played in the construction of the narrative and identity of the museum.A key question that emerges from my own work is the connection between the Afrikaner nationalist scholarship and the development of the open-air museum based on the life of the frontier farmer at Kleinplasie. While Kleinplasie does not seem to follow the monumental approach that was evident in schemes such as the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria, where triumphalism and conquest are key metaphors, it does rely on a sense of ‘independence’ and self-fulfilment in social history type setting. There is thus a need to consider how Afrikaner nationalist historiography impacted on the way history was depicted at Kleinplasie. P. J. van der Merwe’s studies of the character and lifeways of the trekboer(Die Trekboer in die Geskiedenis van die Kaapkolonie), seems to have played a central role in the construction of the theme and narrative. This three-volume trilogy provided Kleinplasie(literally, ‘little farm’) with a social and cultural history on which to construct its version of the past.

Theatre Under the Stars : the Hilker years

Sutherland, Richard 11 1900 (has links)
For nearly a quarter-century, from 1940 through 1963, Vancouver’s Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) mounted annual summer seasons of musical theatre in Malkin Bowl, a converted bandshell in Stanley Park. By the early 1950s, TUTS, now a fully-professional company, had become an enormous popular and financial success, attracting crowds of up to 25,000 per week. For various reasons, the company closed down in 1963, yet so ingrained in Vancouver's cultural fabric had TUTS become, that in 1980 an amateur organization re-appropriated the name for its own summer musical productions in Malkin Bowl. Despite its acknowledged importance in Canadian theatre history, very little research has been devoted to this remarkable company. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to document the early history of TUTS, in particular the years 1940 through 1949 when TUTS was directly funded by the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation and dominated by the colourful, if somewhat erratic, personality of its general manager, Gordon Hilker. Material for the thesis was obtained primarily through sources located at the City of Vancouver Archives, supplemented by newspaper clippings and by personal interviews. Archival matter included programs, handbills, photographs, and Park Board records, especially minute books and correspondence files. This study will examine the circumstances leading to the creation and subsequent development of TUTS as a civic enterprise. Although the work is designed to be comprehensive, certain topics receive special attention: the nature of the programming; the evolution and training of Canadian talent; the development of a professional company; political factionalism in the elected Park Board; and the relationship between Hilker and the Park Board which varied from mutual admiration to mutual loathing. Particularly analyzed are the pivotal events of 1949 that resulted in a complete change of ownership and management. / Arts, Faculty of / Theatre and Film, Department of / Graduate

Salomonsson, Amanda January 2023 (has links)
This study aims to recap and analyze a century of collections management and authenticity use of artist Julius Kronbergs studio, that has been a part of Skansen open air museum in Stockholm since 1922. The problem for the study revolves around the desire to use and preserve an authentic environment that shows poor prerequisites in terms of preservation. The study has been carried out based on archive and litterature studies aswell as an interview, and is commenced with a historic context, followed by the result that is divided into five chapters based on different eras in the collections management of the studio. The conclusions shows how the management has varied some during the century, that the problem in preservation often was solved by down prioritizing the use of the museum environment, and that the studios material authenticity was very important throughout the century.

Hylén Ullman, Jeanna January 2022 (has links)
Ever since the beginning, museums around the world have tried using different techniques to attract visitors. Some open-air museums have even started to create small worlds of their own, wherein they perform living history. The idea is that visitors will be able to step into history, and see different time periods with their own eyes. A prime example of an open-air museum that uses this kind of concept, is Skansen in Stockholm. There, visitors can walk around on cobblestone streets and go into old houses, where they are greeted by staff in historical clothing. This thesis examines how Skansen uses performance and historical clothing to teach history, in the quest to create an immersive experience for the visitors. The empirical material consists of observations and interviews with staff at Skansen, as well as visitors. Drawing upon Richard Schechners definition of performance theory, different parts of Skansen are dissected to determine how museums can use this kind of method in order to appeal to visitors.    Furthermore, the historical clothing is used as a reference point to gather and analyze the thoughts and experiences of the staff and visitors at Skansen. It became apparent that clothes can help you feel like a part of history, both in the sense that it makes you look different and move your body differently. This highlights how clothing can affect people’s bodies and minds. In that way, we see the relationship between humans and objects, and how they interact in different settings. The interviews also showed that people can have different approaches to the performance aspect. While some appreciate the playful nature of stepping into a role, others can feel uneasy about playing pretend. Nonetheless, many of the staff members stressed that they use the historical clothing to create a new persona, which separates their work life from their free time. This shows that clothing and performance can be used as tools in working environments, in order to protect one’s integrity.

Both Museum and Church : The use of two churches in open-air museums at the interface between museum and religion

Andersson, Hedvig January 2022 (has links)
This study sheds light on an interface between the concepts of museum and religion, based on case studies of two churches located at open-air museums: Seglora kyrka at Skansen in Stockholm and Murbergskyrkan at Murberget in Härnösand. These represent two types of museum churches, where Seglora kyrka originally was built för religious use within the Church of Sweden, while Murbergskyrkan originally was built by an open-air museum. This has been done through studies of both the biographies of the churches, to understand the changes in identities that they have undergone during their lives, and the use of the churches today, to understand possible conflicts between pedagogical and religious use of churches at museums. The research has been carried out as a methodological bricolage, where printed sources have been combined with interviews with museum employees and observations of the churches. Based on the biographies of the churches, it can be stated that Seglora kyrka has gone through several changes, to when transferred to Skansen be assigned its present identities as both a museum object and a religious object. Murbergskyrkan has always been assigned these parallel identities. Both churches are still used both pedagogically and religiously, and assigned identities as both museum objects and religious objects. The different uses of the churches do sometimes stand in conflict. Religious practice can go against a museal conservational mission. Pedagogical use of religious objects can be a subject of debate, for example when programs aimed for schools take place in religious buildings. Churches are located at several open-air museums, in Sweden and internationally, and are often included in both educational and religious use. Awareness of possible conflicts between pedagogical and religious use of churches should hence be required from museum educators and employees. This is a two years master’s thesis in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies.
