This diploma thesis deals with the problem of identity in the novel by contemporary Czech writer Pavel Brycz The Long Lost Glory of the Patriarchy. It emerges from the concept of identity as a process of understanding one's self, the meaning of one's life, one's awareness of his place in an individual image of the world. Based on analysis of characters we try to show how Pavel Brycz portrays various aspects of identity (national, personal, social, professional, gender). Structurally, the thesis is divided into two parts: the first one is devoted to the basic characteristics of identity and represents the generalization of various concepts of identity from the point of view of philosophy, psychology, sociology and literary theory; the second part deals with the analysis of the characters of Brycz's novel The Long Lost Glory of the Patriarchy, which shows that each character carries a certain distinctive identity.

Wives' subjective definitions of and attitudes towards wife rapeKottler, Sharon Helen. 06 1900 (has links)
This study was based on subjective attitudes towards wife rape of 85 women and detailed interviews with 20 of them. It aimed to measure the relation between traditionalism and use of the term wife rape, awareness of wife rape and of its criminalisation; and to understand women's experiences and subjective definitions of wife rape and their coping strategies. Once wife rape was problematised, definitions varied. Women holding more traditional attitudes (informal settlement women) were less likely to define the wife's experience in a vignette as wife rape than women holding less traditional (shelter women) and non-traditional attitudes (Network identified women). Additionally, women holding more non-traditional attitudes were more likely to define the event as wife rape than were other women. Similar intergroup differences in traditionalism on awareness of wife rape and its criminalisation emerged. The line between sexual violence and violent sexuality was a thin one at times. / M.A (Pshychology)

Previous issue date: 2017 / A dominação masculina em diversos setores mais nobres é algo que já vem se perpetuando ao longo dos tempos. No que concerne ao trânsito da mulher na política, sem dúvida, existem inúmeras reflexões que podem ser esmiuçadas. Temos que a luta das mulheres pelos espaços de poder vem carregada de muitos desafios e obstáculos que teimam em colocá-las na esfera privada, muitas vezes vista como sinônimo de privação, enquanto que os homens permeiam na esfera pública, entrelaçada com o poder, regalias e prestígio. Pensar sobre a inserção da mulher na política nos remete a desigualdade de gênero nas relações humanas e sociais e ao patriarcado ainda vigente. Nesse sentido, essa investigação científica teve como propósito examinar e entender a participação de mulheres no espaço de representação política, verificar como funciona a dinâmica da inserção da mulher nesse espaço de poder, refletir sobre a temática de gênero, entender a dominação masculina e suas imbricações, refletir sobre a luta feminista que galgava legitimação e reconhecimento das mulheres nos espaços de poder, inclusive da política, a ideologia patriarcal ainda influente sobre as relações humanas da sociedade e no Direito, a discriminação e preconceito existente no espaço político e por suas instituições comandadas em sua grande maioria por homens, a ineficácia da lei de cotas, bem como outras temáticas que merecem ser destacadas no presente trabalho. Para tanto, para uma correta compreensão de nossa análise, focamos nossa pesquisa nas vereadoras do município de João Pessoa e nas Deputadas do Estado da Paraíba, mediante uma abordagem de ordem qualitativa nos voltando para a captura de uma realidade que não pode ser quantificada. Os dados coletados se deram através de entrevistas com base em um roteiro de perguntas que aborda algumas questões essenciais para a apreensão de pontos relevantes sobre o tema tratado. / Male domination in several nobler sectors is something that has been perpetuating over time. As far as the transit of women in politics is concerned, there are undoubtedly innumerable reflections that can be broached. We have that the struggle of women for the spaces of power comes loaded with many challenges and obstacles that insist on placing them in the private sphere, often seen as synonymous with deprivation, while men permeate in the public sphere, intertwined with power, perks and prestige. Thinking about the insertion of women in politics reminds us of the gender inequality in human and social relations and the patriarchy still in force. In this sense, this scientific investigation aimed to examine and understand the participation of women in the space of political representation, to verify how the dynamics of the insertion of women in this space of power works, to reflect on the theme of gender, to understand male domination and its imbrications , To reflect on the feminist struggle that gauged women's legitimation and recognition in the spaces of power, including politics, patriarchal ideology still influential on human relations in society and on the Law, discrimination and prejudice in the political space and its commanded institutions In its great majority by men, the inefficacy of the quota law, as well as other themes that deserve to be highlighted in the present work. To do so, for a correct understanding of our analysis, we focused our research on councilors in the city of João Pessoa and in the Deputies of the State of Paraíba, through a qualitative approach, returning us to capture a reality that can not be quantified. The data collected were given through interviews based on a questionnaire that addresses some essential issues for the apprehension of relevant points on the subject treated.

Com isso, pretendemos contribuir tanto para uma interpretação da literatura como importante meio de crítica social quanto para uma melhor compreensão da obra de Machada de Assis, especialmente de seus contos. / This work intends to analyze some ways on which violence manifests itself as a structuring aspect of the Brazilian society of 19th century, through three axes: Slavery, Patriarchy and Science. Taking as reference Machado de Assis’s work and, more specially, his work as a short stories writer, we have studied ten of his short stories which provide, through the critical representation that the writer does about his society, fundamental matters to research on how the violence due by Slavery, Patriarchy and Science appears shaping social actions, relations and institutions. The chosen short stories were: “Virginius” (1864), “Mariana” (1871), “O relógio de ouro” (1873), “Folha rota” (1878), “Verba testamentária” (1882), “Conto alexandrino” (1883), “A causa secreta” (1885), “O caso da vara” (1891), “O enfermeiro” (1896) e “Pai contra mãe” (1905). Thus, we intent to contribute to the literature interpretation as an important means to social criticism, as much as, to give a contribution to an accurate understanding of Machado de Assis’s work, especially his short stories.

Esta dissertação investiga o educativo na Marcha Mundial de Mulheres, partindo da premissa de que os movimentos sociais populares são também espaços de educação. A opção pelo materialismo histórico dialético, como método, não é nada fácil no atual momento histórico. Isso porque este método exige uma rigorosa análise das múltiplas determinações que atravessam a sociedade de classes, mormente a atual. Assim, buscar condicionamentos e rupturas torna-se difícil num mundo acadêmico que busca fatiar o conhecimento e negar a possibilidade de captar a totalidade do real. Foram adotadas como metodologia: a observação participante, a pesquisa bibliográfica em materiais impressos e a análise de instrumentos audiovisuais. Análises de entrevistas semi-estruturadas também se fizeram necessárias. Como referência teórica fundamental trabalhou-se com os conceitos de anúncio e denúncia, de Paulo Freire, permitindo concluir, com isso, que a Marcha Mundial das Mulheres educa suas militantes em todos os aspectos da vida, além de alfabetizá-las politicamente para intervenção no mundo, incluindo os espaços públicos e privados. E com este movimento de anúncio e denúncia, proposto por Freire, observa-se que é possível construir o inédito viável, ou, mais propriamente, uma utopia realizável. / This dissertation investigates the educational at the World March of Women, on the premise that popular social movements are also educational spaces. The choice of dialectical historical materialism as a method, it is not easy in the current historical moment. That's because this method requires a rigorous analysis of multiple determinations that cross class society, especially the current one. So look for conditions and disruptions becomes difficult in academia that seeks slice knowledge and deny the possibility of grasping the totality of reality. They were adopted as methodology: participant observation, the literature in printed materials and analysis of audiovisual instruments. Analysis of semi-structured interviews also were required. As a fundamental theoretical reference work was done with advertising concepts and denunciation of Paulo Freire, allowing to conclude, therefore, that the World March of Women educates its militants in all aspects of life, as well as literate them politically for intervention world, including public and private spaces. And with this announcement motion and complaint, proposed by Freire, it is observed that it is possible to build viable unpublished, or, more properly, an achievable utopia.

Estética modernista e patriarcado capitalista: um estudo sobre Orlando de Virginia Woolf / Modernist Aesthetics and Capitalist Patriarchy: a Study of Virginia Woolfs OrlandoLindberg S. Campos Filho 13 January 2016 (has links)
O objetivo principal desta dissertação de mestrado é uma leitura do romance Orlando: A biography (1928) de Virginia Woolf a partir do levantamento de uma hipótese interpretativa do processo de construção do romance. Basicamente, procura-se investigar como acontece a seleção, organização e articulação dos materiais sociais e estéticos envolvidos na sua produção de modo a reconstruir momentos-chave da obra, bem como a propor códigos interpretativos. No primeiro capítulo há uma análise dos dispositivos formais que constituem a narração com intuito de revelar os conteúdos sócio-históricos que eles carregam. Já no capítulo dois identifica-se na dialética entre forma e conteúdo do romance duas formações ideológicas antagônicas: a figuração do patriarcado capitalista que organiza a experiência coletiva de maneira autoritária e da estética da modernização cultural que emerge em oposição à primeira. As considerações finais retomam os principais pontos trabalhados nos capítulos anteriores e propõem que o projeto de Woolf tematiza a amplitude da interioridade com o intuito de gerar uma compensação simbólica para crescente desumanização da vida no período entreguerras. Identifica-se, assim, ao menos duas linhas de força da narrativa modernista: uma que aposta na subjetivação e outra na objetivação do processo artístico. Esta dissertação propõe que Woolf se filia à primeira linhagem. / The central objective of this dissertation is a reading of the novel Orlando: A biography (1928) by Virginia Woolf from an interpretative hypothesis of its construction process. Basically, it seeks to investigate how the selection, organisation and articulation of the social and aesthetic materials involved in its production takes place, in a such a way that it is possible to reconstruct the work\'s key moments as well as to propose interpretative codes. In the first chapter there is an extensive analysis of the formal devices that constitute the narrative; in chapter two it is identified in the novel\'s dialectics of form and content two antagonist ideological formations: the figuration of capitalist patriarchy which organises colective experience in an authoritarian way and the aesthetic of cultural modernisation that rises in opposition to the former. Finally, in the conclusion, all the main points discussed in the previous chapters are summarized and it proposes that Woolf\'s project thematizes the human interiority\'s amplitude in order to create a symbolic compensation for the increasing dehumanization of social life in the interwar period. Thus, we identify two modernist paths: one that places centrality on subjectivization and another on objectivization of the artistic process. This dissertation supposes that Woolf belongs to the first lineage.

The goddess, the witch and the bitch : three studies in the perception of womenHare, Nicola Tracy January 2001 (has links)
In the minds of many people all over the world, women are ‘second class citizens’, standing accused of the downfall of mankind ever since Eve allegedly ate the apple. Even amongst those who do not openly denigrate women, there are many who do so in other, more subtle ways even if they are unaware of it. This study proposes to challenge such a view of women by exposing the ways in which perceptions of women are constructed by society, which frequently wants to maintain the status quo of male dominance. This study employs a feminist approach in examining this gynocentric theme, along with cultural studies which, with its focus on power relations and ways of decentring power structures, is also clearly of use. In addition, this multidisciplinary approach of cultural studies offers the possibility of studying literary texts as well as popular culture. Three specific time periods are examined, with a view to uncovering negative perceptions of women and ways that women can resist such attempts to control them. In chapter one, the focus turns to contemporary perceptions of prehistoric women and the ways that so-called ‘objective’ science has failed to represent women accurately. Similarly, ‘objective’ accounts of Goddess-worship – which frequently fail to examine this phenomenon adequately – are revisited. Alice Walker’s The Temple of My Familiar (1989) is discussed as a text which acts as a site of resistance to societally-informed perceptions. Chapter two continues this investigation by turning to the concept of the witch and its maligned association with women. Woman and witchcraft, having been associated for centuries, are investigated as a pairing which frequently results because iii of attempts to control women by androcentric society. In such situations, the practising of witchcraft can actually become a form of resistance to patriarchy. The pernicious effect of society’s need to purge itself – by witch hunts – of witches is also investigated. The Devil’s Chimney (1997) by Anne Landsman and “The prophetess” (1994) by Njabulo S. Ndebele are discussed as texts which examine fictionalised South African versions of this phenomenon. Sinead O’Connor, the Irish singer, is the ‘bitch’ discussed in chapter three. She is examined as a woman who offers strong and on-going resistance to patriarchal ways of thinking which would ‘box’ women in. This singer refuses to accept societal roles which are offered to women and so offers means of resistance to patriarchy, many of which are discussed in this chapter. This study concludes that it is the responsibility of women to resist patriarchy and to define roles for themselves. The three chapters examine various means of resistance and offer women insight into the forms of opposition they themselves can take.

Magister Artium - MA / This study explores the experiences of young rural girls in scouting practices, who reside in the rural areas of Mpumalanga, Western and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa. This exploratory study draws special reference to their participation in Scout programmes in what in observed as a predominantly male-dominated organisational alignment. This exploratory study uses a qualitative feminist investigation, through focus groups and semi structured interviews to investigate the impact of these organisational change initiatives on the experiences of girls in scouting. Although the aim of the study was to explore the experiences of rural girls, boys were included in the study to explore gender dynamics and to problematise how gender inequalities can be understood and addressed in scouting. / South Africa

Perceptions of empowerment: a study of muslim women living in the greater Cape Town MetropoleAbrahams, Zulfa January 2011 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / This thesis is a small scale in depth exploration into the perceptions of power held by eight Muslim women residing in the Cape Town Metropole area. Using a Qualitative Feminist approach the study aimed to explore and shed light on the multiple ways in which Muslim women negotiate, construct and co-construct agency, power and authority in their everyday lives. This study also sought to explore whether Muslim women who appear independent or empowered actually feel in control of their own lives; and how their ability to make choices is mediated by intersecting identities such as race, class, age, etc. The research highlights a number of emergent themes in which discussion of the women views around education, finance, reproductive responsibilities, patriarchy, etc. takes place and also explores the ways in which the women contest and resist traditional cultural norms in their everyday experiences. Furthermore this study also sought to create a space where the researcher focused and refocused her gaze on the theoretical and epistemological aspects of her chosen method of enquiry in order to interrogate its merits and limits. Upon reflection the researcher also acknowledges that, similar to the participants, she also holds contradictory views on some of the issues discussed. / South Africa

Representing women's holocaust trauma across genres and erasPabel, Annemarie Luise January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation situates itself within the problematic (mis)representation of women’s traumatic Holocaust experiences that are subjected to and underplayed by the patriarchal paradigm of Holocaust literature, in which male survivor-narratives constitute the norm. In using Holocaust texts from three different genres and periods, namely Anne Frank’s Diary of 1947, Ruth Klüger’s 2001 autobiography Still Alive: a Holocaust Girlhood Remembered, and Bernhard Schlink’s 1995 novel The Reader, this project approaches the role of genres in the re-articulation of traumatic experiences. It is the aim of this dissertation to explore the epistolary, autobiographic and fictional forms and their inherent conventions and to examine how they facilitate the articulation of women’s experiences that have long been underplayed and sanitized by rigid, patriarchal historical and literary discourses. In doing so, the project follows the structurally fragmenting impact of trauma on the mind and thus moves from short, fragmented forms, such as The Diary, to the more coherent autobiography, Still Alive, and eventually to the novel The Reader. In this analysis of the potential, conventions and complexities that each genre poses to the articulation of trauma, this project outlines and crosses boundaries of genre, gender, language and memory. In aiming at a comparative analysis of how different genres may facilitate the articulation of traumatic experiences differently, this project is based on the argument that the verbalization of trauma is essential for a person to regain control over their memories. This project is based on the different issues regarding the treatment of women, which arise in the selected texts. In selecting epistolary, autobiographic and fictional primary Holocaust texts, all of which address women’s trauma in various forms, I investigate the problematic and distorted representations of women’s experiences. These distortions of women’s traumatic experiences of the Holocaust undermine the validity of such experiences themselves. In order to show the extent of this misrepresentation across genres, I choose three very different primary texts. Firstly, a strong educational component has been ascribed to the diary of Anne Frank, which will be read as a subversive tool. Secondly, the autobiographic text chosen deals extensively with the issue of German/English translation and the representation of trauma that is affected by a bilingual condition. Thirdly, I select a postmodern novel that challenges conventional readings of Holocaust experiences through the use of very complex female characters. In approaching these issues, I will first identify such problematic distortions in the representations of women’s experiences in all three selected texts. I will then use the framework of literary theory as well as trauma and gender theorists to substantiate and evaluate my findings. In doing so, I seek to establish a comparative analysis of how the different forms allow women to re-articulate their traumatic experiences.
