Hur närvaron av djur kan främja hälsa hos äldre personer : En litteraturöversikt / How the presence of animals can be beneficial to elderly peoples health : A litterature review

Svensson, Sara Fanny, Fries, Nichapat January 2024 (has links)
Background: Good health includes physical, mental, and social well-being. To age is to be exposed to many changes both physiologically, socially and mentally. Mental health within older adults can be characterized by experiences of loneliness, immobility, a sense of lacking context. From a healthcare point of view, it is of importance to understand and raise awareness of these dimensions of getting older to better promote good health amongst elderly people. As a nurse or other healthcare staff see the value of breaking the mental and emotional isolation in older people but also, from a physiology standpoint, find ways to motivate elderly to do beneficial activities to promote health and well-being. It is important for nurses to be aware of and understand the significance of pets and how they can affect the health and quality of life of the elderly. Aim: To describe how the presence of animals can promote health in older people. Method: Literature overview Friberg's (2022) analysis model is used and based on ten scientific articles. The search was performed in databases such as CINAHL Complete and PubMed. Results: The result of the review showed that pets have a positive impact on the quality of life of older individuals. Owning a pet can improve physical and mental health, strengthen social connections, and reduce feelings of loneliness among the elderly. Despite this, the relationship and love between the pet owner and the animal increase. The study also highlighted challenges and risks, such as concerns about financial costs and difficulties in caring for pets due to the increasing age and higher risk of falls. Solutions such as adapted living environments and preventive measures in the form of pet- related activities can be helpful för both the animals and their owner. Conclusions: Meaningfulness play an important role in the health of the elderly, and in some cases, motivation and meaningfulness can be strengthened by spending time with animals, which has a positive impact on the health and well-being of older adults. Nurses can integrate pets into activities, thereby motivating elderly individuals to promote their own health and prevent illness.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Silvia Cristina Copia Carrilho Silva Martins.pdf: 14014733 bytes, checksum: fe3245103944e46851953298481a84e5 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-08-04 / The present study aims to analyze the personification as persuasive appeal in advertising campaigns dedicated to Pets Shops (a shop specialized in products and services for pets). To this end, we selected 12graphic design pieces published in the Cães e Cia. Magazine, from January to December 2013. The primary focus of the research is on the discourse of advertising, and especially about his attempt to entice pet owners - highlights on the fact that the pet owners represent a significant portion of consumers that has grown substantially in recent years. In this sense, the research has an exploratory nature and employs documentary research and literature review. This study takes as instrument, articles, materials and advertisements published in specialized magazines, targeting the world of pets . Authors such as João Vicente Cegato Bertomeu, João A. Carrascoza, Vestergaard and Schroder and are used for the foundation of the main ideas that guide the study, however, the fundamental strategy lies in the fundamental review of the theories of embodiment; the theoretical path and image analysis of the selected graphic design pieces that depict the use of personification and the persuasive speech of advertising. In this sense, note that the research was guided by the collection and examination of graphic pieces that employ personification as textual and visual appeal, using instruments of communication studies for analysis. The analysis was based on theories that focus on temporal, cultural and behavioral relationships. The areas of phenomenology (here we use authors like Merleau-Ponty e Furlani and Bacchi), the proxemics (using ethologist and anthropologist Edward Hall) will translate the constraints of human perception filters in the act of production and reception advertising discourse, as well as other authors who also pass through these areas. It is noteworthy that the references of this research include data collected in magazines (veterinary or otherwise), such as the magazine of the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, National Geographic and Galileo, as well as official sites like ABINPET (Brazilian Association of the Industry products for Pets), ANFALPET (National Association of Manufacturers of Food for Pets), since these publications are more updated than academic research (masters and doctorates) on the topic.

Pets and the level of loneliness in community dwelling older adults.

Nunnelee, Jane Baker 12 1900 (has links)
Loneliness is a significant problem for older adults and can lead to negative health and social outcomes. Having a companion pet is beginning to be recognized as a way loneliness can be reduced for older persons. The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine the effect of pets on the level of loneliness in persons 60 years old or older who live alone and independently in a large metropolitan community in the North Central Texas area. Using a non-random snowball sample of older individuals (N = 252), who met the study criteria, each subject was administered the researcher-developed demographic data survey instrument containing the following variables: (a) pets - having a pet/wanting a pet, (b) age, (c) gender, (d) marital status, (e) living alone, (f) losses within the last six months, (g) interactions with family members, (h) interactions with others outside of the family, (i) highest educational level achieved, (j) employment or volunteer involvement in the community, (k) religious participation, and (l) self perceived health status. The UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3 was used to obtain the loneliness scores. Prediction of loneliness and relationship with the independent variables was tested using frequency, correlation, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and multivariate analysis using ordinary least-squares (OLS) regression analysis. The findings from this study showed that those older adults living alone who did not have a pet but would like to have a companion pet had higher levels of loneliness (p<0.05). Other findings suggested that older adults' loneliness was less if they had moderate religious participation and interactions with others (p< 0.05). Future studies are needed to examine the effects that pets have on feelings of loneliness and the ability of older individuals to cope effectively with those feelings.

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) : what is it?

Hettema, Elri January 2002 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study focuses on existing research into the field of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) and attempts to provide a clear answer as to what animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is. In addition, the limitations of current research, as well as future opportunities for research in this field and some practical considerations for applying animal-assisted therapy are explored. The origin of animal-assisted therapy is examined. How the present terminology has developed in that it defines the use of animals in therapy as an adjunct to other therapeutic techniques is discussed in contrast to previous terminology, which created the impression that there was some form of managed process on the part of the animal. The terminology has developed from terms such as pet therapy and pet-facilitated therapy to animal-assisted therapy (AAT) and animal-assisted activities (AAA). The history of animal-assisted therapy is examined in relation to the three therapy categories of milieu therapy, physical rehabilitation and animal-assisted psychotherapy. The most common theoretical frameworks for AAT are also discussed. In general, systems theory tends to be the most favoured theoretical foundation for AAT. The typical target populations of animal-assisted therapy are examined in the light of target relationships. The six target relationships that a practitioner of animal-assisted therapy would need to manage are identified and their merits discussed: therapist-and-patient relationship; therapist-and-animal relationship; the staff-and-patient and staff-and-animal relationship; the staff-and-animal therapist relationship; the animal-and-patient relationship; and the application environment wherein these relationships are lived. The typical research designs for AAT are also discussed within the history of AATand successful research tends toward longitudinal studies wherein patients with similar diagnostic profiles are all exposed to a common form of treatment. The experimental group has some form of AAT in addition to the standard treatment whilst the control group continues with only the standard treatment. Comparisons are made against specific measurements such as degree of sociability and other indices. In general, the current research indicates a need for research characterised by better controls and the application of general research principles to supplement the abundance of anecdotal and case study reports on AAT. In addition, the practical application of AAT is also examined in relation to training and liability, office management and décor, animal well-being, and the necessary precautions to safeguard patients from possible harm. A critique of AAT is provided as well as the difficulties encountered in the practical implementation of animal-assisted therapy. The literature reviewed for this study confirms that animal-assisted therapy shows excellent promise, which increases when complimented by experimental endeavour in terms of properly evaluated AAT programmes. In terms of the future potential of AAT, the possible advantages of the implementation of AAT programmes into schools, prisons and working environments is raised. Related therapeutic adjuncts such as horticultural and natural therapy are also discussed. Fine (2000) was the most up to date and encompassing source for AAT and may be a good tool to guide future practitioners and researchers in the field of AAT.

Människans bästa vän : En litteraturöversikt om hundar i vården / Man's best friend : A literature review about dogs in clinical care

Kiluk, Olivia, Hassan, Adam January 2016 (has links)
Background:The bond between humans and dogs has shown to be important. Early studies have shown that they have health-promoting benefits on humans. The nurse’s role includes promoting health and if dogs can do so then that would suggest that we should use them in clinical care. Aim: The aim of this literature review is to investigate how dogs can be used in clinical care and what effects they have on patients. Method: This study was designed as a literature review. The authors searched for scientific articles which addressed the aim of the study, by using the databases Cinahl COMPLETE and PubMed. The contents of the articles were then analysed by reading them both individually and jointly and themes and subthemes were identified. Results: The analysis regarding the use of dogs in clinical care resulted in two themes: Activity and Presence. The theme Activity describes how dogs were used to carry out activities that were specifically designed for a particular purpose. The theme Presence describes how dogs have been used as company, where the activities were not particularly structured but the dogs had a positive impact just by being present. The analysis regarding the effect dogs in clinical care have on patients resulted in three themes: Physical health, Psychological health and Participation. These describe the effects that the dogs have had on patients. These were exclusively positive. Discussion: The strengths and weaknesses of the method of this review are discussed in the section Method discussion. In the section Results discussion, the results are discussed. They have been primarily positive to the use of dogs in clinical care; however, in some cases the results were faint.
