Pilot Tube Microtunneling: Profile of an Emerging Industry

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: Trenchless technologies have emerged as a viable alternative to traditional open trench methods for installing underground pipelines and conduits. Pilot Tube Microtunneling, also referred to as the pilot tube system of microtunneling, guided auger boring, or guided boring method, is a recent addition to the family of trenchless installation methods. Pilot tube microtunneling originated in Japan and Europe, and was introduced to the United States in the year 1995 (Boschert 2007). Since then this methodology has seen increased utilization across North America particularity in municipal markets for the installation of gravity sewers. The primary reason contributing to the growth of pilot tube microtunneling is the technology's capability of installing pipes at high precision in terms of line and grade, in a wide range of ground conditions using relatively inexpensive equipment. The means and methods, applicability, capabilities and limitations of pilot tube microtunneling are well documented in published literature through many project specific case studies. However, there is little information on the macroscopic level regarding the technology and industry as a whole. With the increasing popularity of pilot tube microtunneling, there is an emerging need to address the above issues. This research effort surveyed 22 pilot tube microtunneling contractors across North America to determine the current industry state of practice with the technology. The survey examined various topics including contractor profile and experience; equipment, methods, and pipe materials utilized; and issues pertaining to project planning and construction risks associated with the pilot tube method. The findings of this research are based on a total of 450 projects completed with pilot tube microtunneling between 2006 and 2010. The respondents were diverse in terms of their experience with PTMT, ranging from two to 11 years. A majority of the respondents have traditionally provided services with other trenchless technologies. As revealed by the survey responses, PTMT projects grew by 110% between the years 2006 and 2010. It was found that almost 72% of the 450 PTMT projects completed between 2006 and 2010 by the respondents were for sanitary sewers. Installation in cobbles and boulders was rated as the highest risk by the contractors. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Construction 2011

Santos, Liliana Dutra dos January 2014 (has links)
Zinc is one of the most used metals in surface treatment processes. The batch experiments studied the influence of pH, contact time and adsorbent concentration in the removal of Zn 2+ ions from a solution with initial concentration of 10 mg.L-1. After achieving the best process parameters, the system’s equilibrium isotherm was constructed, and the fit of experimental data to the nonlinear Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson and Sips models was verified. Pilot plant tests were carried out in order to identify the system’s breakthrough curve. In the continuous fixed bed adsorption process, different operating conditions were evaluated by varying the feed flow (15 and 20 mL.min-1) and the mass of adsorbent material used as filling (10, 13, 20 and 40 g). The results showed as the optimum parameters for adsorption: pH 6, contact time of 30 min and adsorbent concentration of 20 g.L-1. The Sips model presented the best fit among the mathematical models studied. The experiment conducted in a pilot plant, using a flow rate of 15 mL.min-1 and solid adsorbent mass of 40 g, had the best results among the examined conditions, with breakthrough and exhaust times of 5 and 90 min, respectively.

Le tabagisme et le risque de cancers liés au tabac chez les migrants en Europe / Tobacco use and tobacco‐related cancer risks in migrants in Europe

Ducarroz, Simon 19 February 2016 (has links)
Enfin, deux designs d'étude sont proposés, qui varient en fonction de la quantité d'information recherchée, afin de mieux comprendre le tabagisme des immigrés / International migration is increasing and Europe is no exception with immigrants accounting for more than 10% of the total European Union population in 2014. One pressing issue is tobacco use in immigrants as they may use tobacco differently from the natives of the hostcountry and this could result in differing tobacco‐related cancers (TRC) risks compared to those in the natives. However very little is known about tobacco use, a major avoidable cancer cause, and TRC in immigrants in Europe. The overall objective of this thesis was to investigate tobacco use and risk of TRC in immigrants. The aims were to: explore tobacco use and its determinants in immigrants in France (TOBAMIG pilot study), compare the burden of TRC between immigrants and natives in Denmark, put these results into context with current knowledge, and give guidance on how to set up a study on tobacco use and cancer risk in immigrants in France using the experience from the TOBAMIG pilot study. In the TOBAMIG pilot study information on tobacco use and its determinants was collected from a mixed sample of immigrants, suggesting a large‐scale study was in principle feasible, but modifications from the TOBAMiG approach were to be made. In Denmark, the overall TRC rate in immigrants was lower than that of the natives; however, large differences were observed by cancer‐site and by country of origin, suggesting that among other factors the smoking patterns from the immigrant’s country of origin have a primary role in the burden of TRC. Finally, with regard to a large‐scale study in France, two study designs are proposed, depending on the quantity of information sought, to better understand tobacco use in immigrants and risk of TRC

Vigânico, Eunice Maria January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this work was to develop a prototype for hydrometallurgical production of ferrous sulfate heptahydrate crystals (FeSO4.7H2O – melanterite). The raw material was a pyrite concentrate obtained from a coal tailing. The leaching system was assembled in pilot scale with 300 kg of a concentrate with 73.2% pyrite. Initially, it was carried out a leaching step in aerobic conditions with the purpose to obtain an aqueous solution rich in ferric ions and sulfate. Next, modifications were proceeded to establish an anaerobic condition in the reactor, converting the ferric to ferrous ions. Ethanol was added to the leaching solution to provide the precipitation of the Fe2+ and sulfate as ferrous sulfate heptahydrate. The ferrous sulfate precipitate was recrystallized, allowing producing melanterite crystals of higher purity. The crystals were characterized in terms of chemical and mineralogical composition. The process allowed producing crystals with a high purity attending chemical and pharmaceutical purposes. Thus, it was developed a process to produce ferrous sulfate from coal wastes (usually, ferrous sulfate crystals are produced as a co product from titanium dioxide and steel production). The technology presents a high conversion factor of soluble Fe2+ to melanterite and the necessary incomes are pyrite, water, and ethylic alcohol. The hydrometallurgical technique applied in this study allowed production of a commercial grade product from coal mining waste material.

Physical Layer Security in Training-Based Single-Hop/Dual-Hop Massive MIMO Systems

Timilsina, Santosh 01 August 2018 (has links)
The broadcast nature of wireless medium has made information security as one of the most important and critical issues in wireless systems. Physical layer security, which is based on information-theoretic secrecy concepts, can be used to secure the wireless channels by exploiting the noisiness and imperfections of the channels. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, which are equipped with very large antenna arrays at the base stations, have a great potential to boost the physical layer security by generating the artificial noise (AN) with the exploitation of excess degrees-of-freedom available at the base stations. In this thesis, we investigate physical layer security provisions in the presence of passive/active eavesdroppers for single-hop massive MIMO, dual-hop relay-assisted massive MIMO and underlay spectrum-sharing massive MIMO systems. The performance of the proposed security provisions is investigated by deriving the achievable rates at the user nodes, the information rate leaked into the eavesdroppers, and the achievable secrecy rates. Moreover, the effects of active pilot contamination attacks, imperfect channel state information (CSI) acquisition at the base-stations, and the availability of statistical CSI at the user nodes are quantified. The secrecy rate/performance gap between two AN precoders, namely the random AN precoder and the null-space based AN precoder, is investigated. The performance of hybrid analog/digital precoding is compared with the full-dimensional digital precoding. Furthermore, the physical layer security breaches in underlay spectrum-sharing massive MIMO systems are investigated, and thereby, security provisions are designed/analyzed against active pilot contamination attacks during the channel estimation phase. A power-ratio based active pilot attack detection scheme is investigated, and thereby, the probability of detection is derived. Thereby, the vulnerability of uplink channel estimation based on the pilots transmitted by the user nodes in time division duplexing based massive MIMO systems is revealed, and the fundamental trade-offs among physical layer security provisions, implementation complexity and performance gains are discussed.

The predictive validity of a psychological test battery for the selection of cadet pilots in a commercial airline

Mnguni, Vusumuzi Quirion 03 1900 (has links)
Commercial airlines need to employ well qualified pilots to run their core business. The current supply from privately and military qualified pilots is proving to be inadequate. A further challenge facing the airline is having to attempt to reflect the diversity of the country in its workforce. The present study investigated the predictive validity of a psychological test battery for cadet pilots. The predictors that were included in the research are: biographical data, ABET levels in terms of English and Matric results, as well as results from psychological tests, namely: English literacy skills assessment (ELSA), Raven’s Progressive Matrices (RMP), Blox test, subtests of the Intermediate Battery (B/77) viz: Arithmetic 1 and 2, and Reading Comprehension, and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). The objective of the research was to determine the predictive validity of the selection battery utilizing the final flying school results as the criteria. The results of the research were inconclusive. Only some of the tests showed positive correlations with the modules of the flying school results. The Ravens Progressive Matrices, Blox, Matriculation English symbol, ABET levels and Reading Comprehension, were found to have predictive power with some of the modules of the flying school results based on the regression analysis. It is recommended that a revised profile for a commercial airline pilot should be developed, as well as that the critical skills and competencies should be identified to enable the airlines to utilize appropriate and relevant assessment tools to select prospective candidates, particularly among the previously disadvantaged communities.

Orellana, Daniel Rigon January 2016 (has links)
The reuse of waste materials and its destination are challenges continuously faced for industry. For being far-flung and apply a huge variety of process, raw materials and inputs, the steel supply chain benefits from having a high flexibility and many possibilities of reintroducing compounds in its manufacturing route. For example, carbonaceous materials can be used partially in coal blends for cokemaking process depending on particle size and chemical composition. The current work aimed to evaluate the influence of adding fine charcoal to a coal blend for coke production in a pilot oven and to determine the maximum content tolerated for the blend, assessing coke quality parameters. For this, a eucalyptus charcoal residue was introduced in two different size distributions, one composed of coarser particles (fraction G) and another of finer (fraction F), and characterized together with the coal blend used. Afterwards, the cokes produced in pilot oven were also characterized through several analyzes: proximate, ultimate, surface area, porosity, optical texture, reactivity on thermobalance, CRI/CSR e DI150/15. The results achieved showed that the insertion of charcoal on fraction G compromised less the quality parameters of cokes with charcoal. Contents up to 3% of charcoal were tolerated for this particle size distribution while for fraction F, only 1%. Another point noticed was that the coke produced with charcoal addition had no significant drop on sulfur content, with the exception of the coke sample with 10% of charcoal and fraction G. In all samples with charcoal it was also possible to see an increase on surface area in relation to the reference coke. The dynamic thermogravimetric tests also provided relevant information regarding to the temperatures and apparent reaction rates of cokes made with charcoal.

Petrogenesis and rare earth element economic potential of Pilot Knob, a Pliocene (?) alkaline intrusive complex in the Togwotee Pass region, northwestern Wyoming (U.S.A)

Dodd, Zachary Caleb January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Geology / Matthew E. Brueseke / Previous K-Ar dating and petrography (Obradovich, 1978) have identified Pilot Knob as an ~3.4 (±0.06) Ma alkaline intrusive body. Bulk rock geochemistry obtained via XRF from four samples of Pilot Knob verifies the transitionally alkaline composition of the body, and new REE data also show enriched La, Ce, and Nd concentrations, consistent with rare earth element (REE) enrichment. Given the increased demand for REEs over the past ~30 years and China accounting for > 90% of global REE production (Kynicky, et al. 2012), it is important to evaluate new domestic REE sources. This includes those associated with alkaline intrusive complexes, because they are demonstrated to host high REE concentrations (Verplanck and Van Gosen, 2011). Such alkaline igneous occurrences show complex mineralization and consist of many minerals containing substitutional REEs (Mariano and Mariano, 2012). This study evaluates the petrogenesis and mineralogy of Pilot Knob (and a secondary field site, Wildcat Hill) and determines whether the intrusive body is consistent with an economically viable REE deposit. Additionally, given its geographic location and Pliocene faulting and magmatism (e.g., predating the earliest volcanism at Yellowstone), Pilot Knob may represent one of the earliest structural manifestations of the “arrival” of the Yellowstone hotspot at its current location under the North American lithosphere or magmatism associated with lithospheric extension to the south at the Leucite Hills, WY. Inspection of satellite imagery, which has been verified with field data, shows that other intrusive igneous bodies (e.g. - Wildcat Hill) exist, along an apparent normal fault zone along strike with a major extensionally related fault zone documented ~10 km northwest of Pilot Knob. Clinopyroxene geobarometry, coupled with Nd isotope data (εNd[subscript 3.5Ma] = -21.9), indicates that Pilot Knob formed via a multi-stage development history that initiated with melting of ancient lithospheric mantle, where crystallization occurred at a variety of depths. As an alkaline intrusive complex, Pilot Knob has been identified, based on mineral and chemical compositions, as a kersantite, and has been found to contain approximately 600 ppm total light-rare earth element ore lode with ~150 ppm Nd, ~175 ppm La, and ~338 ppm Ce enrichment. Apatite was found to be the primary REE-bearing mineral via petrography and electron microprobe analyses. Based on current technology and processing methods, REE concentrations were not found to be significant enough to denote an economically viable REE ore deposit at Pilot Knob.
