Dům - místo lidské množiny / The House - the Place of Human FamilyAdamcová, Veronika January 2012 (has links)
The work deals with the analysis of literary works, where the story takes place inside the house, namely the rental house. This is a very specific area where large number of meetings and encounterings of tenants takes place. This fact brings great potential to create various sub-plots. Chosen literary works are Week in the quiet house and Figures by Jan Neruda, House in the suburb by Karel Polacek and Spring in the house by Jaroslav Havlicek. The work examines what role the house takes in different literary works, how it is displayed and how it is involved in developing the plot and characters.

Espécies Arbustivo-arbóreas em clareiras e micro-sítios de luz em 5,12ha de Floresta de Restinga na Ilha do Cardoso, São Paulo / Trees and treelets species in gaps and light micro-sites in 5,12ha of Restinga Forest in Ilha do Cardoso, Sao Paulo StateMariana Meireles Pardi 23 April 2007 (has links)
Tropical Forest dynamics studies elucidate the importance of knowledge about the relationship between light and distribuition of species to understanding the regeneration and diversity mainteinence of these communities. To contribute with this knowledge to Restinga Forest species this study described the distribuition of trees with dbh (diameter at breast high) ≥4,8cm in thirteen (13) indirect light categories, in 5,12ha of a Restinga Forest in Ilha do Cardoso, Cananeia Municipal District, Sao Paulo State. These categories correspond to different light micro-sites within the forest mosaic and are derived of the combination of the type or absence of covery where the individuals can be under of (under decidual trees, under evergreen trees or under intense light) and the position which each individual can ocupy within the forest (gap, understory, canopy). All the species were classified in ecological groups according to available literature into pioneers, early secondary, understory, climax and non-classified to correlation with their individuals distribuition within the light categories. There were sampled 7.277 tree specimens represented by 381 pioneers of 12 different species, 4.138 early secondary of 24 species, 48 understory of 2 species, 2.133 climax of 48 species and 577 non-classified specimens of 19 different species. Among the 105 species sampled, 35 presented preferential distribuition for some light micro-sites. These distribuition patterns suggest that the light quantity reaching the understory doesn't restrict the occurence of pioneer species only to gaps. For some species the classification in ecological groups found in the literature were not coherent with the individuals distribuition and there were been suggested another classification according to its occurence in the Restinga Forest, which will be confirmed only through repetitions of this study among time. There were delimited 77 gaps in the study area during the classification in the indirect light categories, to which there were estimated area, shape, species and individuals compositions to assess the distribuition of species and ecological grups within these gaps and support comparisons with repeated studies in this area and with natural regeneration studies. Recurring studies using this method over the same spot during time or in different areas of the same Forest formation will provide data accumulation not only about the instantaneous distribuition of the specimens, but also about these forests dynamics, promoting the knowledge about the ecological bahaviour of species and about distribuition patterns of these species according to light regimes.

Advanced Data Analysis Tools and Multi-Instrument Material CharacterizationSingh, Bhupinder 01 December 2015 (has links)
My dissertation focuses on (i) the development of new analysis tools and methodologies for analyzing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) data, and (ii) the comprehensive characterization of materials (nanodiamonds) using a multi-instrument approach. Chapter 1 contains (i) a discussion of the two techniques I focused on most in my work: XPS and ToF-SIMS, (ii) a discussion of the common chemometrics techniques used to analyze data from these methods, and (iii) the advantages/rationale behind the multi-instrument characterization of materials. Chapter 2 describes various good practices for obtaining reasonable peak fits in XPS, which can also be applied to peak fitting data from different techniques. To address the issue of user subjectivity/bias in XPS peak fitting, I introduce two less biased mathematical functions for characterizing XPS narrow scans, namely the equivalent width (EW) and the autocorrelation width (AW). These functions are discussed in Chapters 3 and 4. In Chapter 5, I then introduce uniqueness plots as simple and straightforward graphical tools for assessing the quality of XPS peak fits and for determining whether fit parameters are correlated. This tool is extensively used in spectroscopic ellipsometry, and the mathematics behind it is known in XPS. However, to the best of my knowledge, this graphical tool has never been applied to XPS. ToF-SIMS data analysis is somewhat challenging due to the enormous amounts of data that are collected, and also the matrix effect in SIMS. This amount of information is significantly increased when depth profiles are performed on samples. Chapter 6 discusses a new chemometrics tool that I introduce for analysis of complex data sets, with emphasis on XPS and ToF-SIMS depth profiling data. The new approach is called the Information Content (IC) or entropy, which is adapted from Claude Shannon's work on Information Theory. Chapter 7 then contains a presentation of the comprehensive characterization of five nanodiamond samples used to manufacture particles for liquid chromatography. The advantages of a multi-instrument approach for material characterization and the lack of comprehensive material characterization in the literature are emphasized. To the best of my knowledge this is the most comprehensive characterization of nanodiamonds that has been reported in the literature. Chapter 8 presents conclusions of my work and future work. This thesis also contains six appendices. Appendix 1 contains an article from a scientific magazine that I wrote to highlight the importance and applications of the EW and AW to characterize XPS narrow scans. Appendices 2-5 are application notes I wrote on separations I performed on a nanodiamond based HPLC column. Finally, Appendix 6 describes the ToF-SIMS analysis of the tungsten species in the nanodiamond samples characterized in Chapter 7.

Unsmiling Lips and Dull Eyes: A Study of Why We Continue to Read Jane AustenBarakat, Kareen 07 November 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to take a closer look at Jane Austen’s work and understand the importance of it in both the academic and cultural sphere. With a specific focus on Pride and Prejudice, this research starts with a focus on feminist readings of the novel. Primarily, this research looks at the novel with a feminist lens in order to better understand the female characters and their involvement in the marriage plot. Secondarily, the research goes on to look at the cultural impact of Pride and Prejudice and attempts to understand the ways in which this novel re-appears in different adaptations. Finally, the research suggests that there should be a new way of reading Austen that better fits contemporary society. Despite how far removed Jane Austen’s world may seem, her work remains important and worth studying. This thesis argues in favor of the appreciation of Jane Austen’s work both academically and culturally.

Change in geomorphology, hydrodynamics and surficial sediment of the tauranga entrance tidal delta systemBrannigan, Adrian January 2009 (has links)
Historical change in the geomorphology, hydrodynamics, and surficial sediment of the tidal delta system of Tauranga Harbour are investigated with the general aim of analysing The general aims of this thesis are: firstly to analyse historical changes to inlet delta system geomorphology using historical hydrographic charts, secondly, to conduct hydrodynamic numerical modelling using historical bathymetries to access changes in peak spring flow and potential net tidal sediment transport, and thirdly, to analyse historical changes in surficial sediment and bedforms. Geomorphic change was investigated through plotting difference in bathymetry graphs and conducting cross sections taken from digisitied bathymetries obtained from historical hydrographic charts from 1852, 1879, 1901, 1927, 1954 and a modern bathymetry from 2006. Two-dimensional hydrodynamic numerical modelling was conducted to investigate the changes in peak tidal current flow and potential net sediment transport between 1852 and 2006. Changes in surficial sediment patterns were determined through completing a side scan sonar survey with associated sediment samples for ground truthing of grain size and underwater videography to gather surficial shell coverage information. This was used to produce a surficial sediment coverage map which was compared to historical studies Major geomorphological findings include that the shipping channel appears to have induced minor change in the geomorphology of the FTD but such changes are similar to those identified in the historical bathymetries of 1852, 1879, 1901, 1927, 1954 prior to dredging. Significant changes have occurred on the ETD, with the majority of the ETD showing scour of 1 m while the terminal lobe has extended seawards. This is associated with historical (since 1852) narrowing of the inlet from Panepane Point to Mt Maunganui by ~ 900 m. Hydrodynamic numerical modelling has shown a significant increase in potential net tidal sediment transport in the Cutter Channel due to dredging, while the Maunganui Roads Channel shows a reduction of net potential tidal sediment transport that is associated with the dredging of this channel. The area surrounding Panepane Point undergoes significant increases and decreases in net potential tidal sediment transport both before and after dredging Investigation of the surficial sediment patterns over the FTD and ETD from sidescan sonar and bottom samples show that between 1983 and 2007 there has been a northwards extension of the area of major shell (greater than 50 %) converge in the main ebb channel as well as reduction in major shell converge in flood tidal delta ebb shield region. The Maunganui Roads Channel changes from sitly sands to medium and fine sands.

Exploring recurrences in quasiperiodic systemsZou, Yong January 2007 (has links)
In this work, some new results to exploit the recurrence properties of quasiperiodic dynamical systems are presented by means of a two dimensional visualization technique, Recurrence Plots(RPs). Quasiperiodicity is the simplest form of dynamics exhibiting nontrivial recurrences, which are common in many nonlinear systems. The concept of recurrence was introduced to study the restricted three body problem and it is very useful for the characterization of nonlinear systems. I have analyzed in detail the recurrence patterns of systems with quasiperiodic dynamics both analytically and numerically. Based on a theoretical analysis, I have proposed a new procedure to distinguish quasiperiodic dynamics from chaos. This algorithm is particular useful in the analysis of short time series. Furthermore, this approach demonstrates to be efficient in recognizing regular and chaotic trajectories of dynamical systems with mixed phase space. Regarding the application to real situations, I have shown the capability and validity of this method by analyzing time series from fluid experiments.
Trajektorien mischender dynamischer Systeme.
