Life cycle assessment and life cycle cost analysis of a single-family house

Petrovic, Bojana January 2021 (has links)
The building industry is responsible for 35% of final energy use and 38% of CO2 emissions at a global level. The European Union aims to reduce CO2 emissions in the building industry by up to 90% by the year 2050. Therefore, it is important to consider the environmental impacts buildings have. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the environmental impacts and costs of a single-family house in Sweden. In the study, the life cycle assessment (LCA) and the life cycle cost (LCC) methods have been used by following the “cradle to grave” life cycle perspective.  This study shows a significant reduction of global warming potential (GWP), primary energy (PE) use and costs when the lifespan of the house is shifted from 50 to 100 years. The findings illustrate a total decrease in LCA outcome, of GWP to 27% and PE to 18%. Considering the total LCC outcome, when the discount rate increases from 3% to 5% and then 7%, the total costs decrease significantly (60%, 85% to 95%). The embodied carbon, PE use and costs from the production stage/construction stage are significantly reduced, while the maintenance/replacement stage displays the opposite trend. Operational energy use, water consumption and end-of-life, however, remain largely unchanged. Furthermore, the findings emphasize the importance of using wood-based building materials due to its lower carbon-intensive manufacturing process compared to non-wood choices.   The results of the LCA and LCC were systematically studied and are presented visually. Low carbon and cost-effective materials and installations have to be identified in the early stage of a building design so that the appropriate investment choices can be made that will reduce a building’s total environmental and economic impact in the long run. Findings from this thesis provide a greater understanding of the environmental and economic impacts that are relevant for decision-makers when building single-family houses.

Detekce živosti prstu na základě změn papilárních linií / Liveness Detection of a Finger Based on Changes of Papillary Lines

Lichvár, Michal January 2008 (has links)
There are several frauds against biometric systems (BSs) and several techniques exist to secure BSs against these frauds. One of the techniques is liveness detection. To fool fingerprint sensors, latent fingerprints, dummy fingers and wafer-thin layer attached to the finger are being used. Liveness detection is being used also when scanning fingerprints. Several different characteristics of the live finger can be used to detect liveness, for example sweat, conductivity etc. In this thesis, new approach is examined. It is based on the expandability of the finger as an effect of heartbeats/pulsation. As the skin is expanding, also the distances between papillary lines are expanding. Whole finger expands approximately in range of 4,5 ľm , the distance between two neighbor papillary lines in 0,454 ľm . This value collides with wavelength of blue and green light. The result from this work is following. The resolution of the capturing device is not high enough to capture the expandability on distance between two neighbor papillary lines. Also, because of collision with wavelength, the diffraction effect is presented and the result images are influenced by this error.

La concession en russe moderne / Concession in modern russian

Lyakhova Moulin, Mariya 06 April 2011 (has links)
In this thesis dedicated to concession in modern Russian we specified the concept by means of a prototypical schema which we applied to classify different types of concessive constructions. This schema aims at embracing the majority of sentences marked as concessive. The main mark of the proposed schema (p, C q), based on the idea of contrast between the implications of p and q contents, assessments of these contents or p and q speech acts, is the connective C, a concessive conjunction or preposition. We studied concessive relations in both complex sentences and simple sentences. They are classified according to the epistemic status of q and subdivided into non-Conditional, conditional and counterfactual. The second criterion of classification is the single or multiple status of q. According to it we have, on the one hand, non-Generalized concessive constructions and, on the other, generalized concessive constructions. Outstepping the traditional research, we made a point of studying illocutionary concession as part of the whole. Indeed, xotja in discourse is used by the speaker as a self-Correction technique in order to reject the previous utterance pointing thus the deviation of their thought. As a result of our research we come to the conclusion that concession has multiple forms and cannot be reduced to inoperant causality. Due to a wider research scope we managed to bridge the linguistic and rhetoric concessions and to give a broader view of different forms of concessive relations in modern Russian.

McDuff, Marie-Claude 01 1900 (has links)
In the boreal forest of northern Québec, the size and quantity of lichen woodlands patches is increasing, and taking over the spruce-moss forest territory. The phenomenon has been observed, and scientists now believe that the northern limit of the spruce-moss forest will slowly move south. This shift of ecosystem happens when the forest stand is already fragilized, and a perturbation occurs. Vegetation’s spectral properties can be used as a tool to assess and identify disturbed forest areas The main objective of this study is to establish relations between data extracted from spectral signatures, vegetation indexes and different types of stress that could affect boreal ecosystems. The identification spruce-moss woodlands prone to regeneration failure could be achieved with the study of spectral properties as stress indicators. In order to achieve this objective, sites from 3 latitudes (51, 52 and 53) have been sampled on James Bay Road. Plots have been regrouped in pairs for subsequent pairwise statistical tests to compare results from both forest stand types. Spectral signatures have been measured on 5 randomly chosen black spruces. These measurements were taken throughout the growing season (3 sampling campaigns). Four vegetation indexes have been extracted from spectral signatures (NDVI, NDWI, PRI and SIPI), and the mean slope of the red-edge area have been calculated. Results have shown that some of the spruce-moss stands have had very similar values to those from the lichen woodlands, that are considered as stressed ecosystems. From these results, it is possible to assume that stressed ecosystems can be detected at landscape level (on satellite images). Monitoring vegetation stress can help improve forest management after forest fires and insect’s epidemics to prevent the loss of this beautiful ecosystem.

Micro RNA-Mediated regulation of the full-length and truncated isoforms of human neurotrophic tyrosine kinase receptor type 3 (NTRK 3)

Guidi, Mònica 13 January 2009 (has links)
Neurotrophins and their receptors are key molecules in the development of thenervous system. Neurotrophin-3 binds preferentially to its high-affinity receptorNTRK3, which exists in two major isoforms in humans, the full-length kinaseactiveform (150 kDa) and a truncated non-catalytic form (50 kDa). The twovariants show different 3'UTR regions, indicating that they might be differentiallyregulated at the post-transcriptional level. In this work we explore howmicroRNAs take part in the regulation of full-length and truncated NTRK3,demonstrating that the two isoforms are targeted by different sets of microRNAs.We analyze the physiological consequences of the overexpression of some of theregulating microRNAs in human neuroblastoma cells. Finally, we providepreliminary evidence for a possible involvement of miR-124 - a microRNA with noputative target site in either NTRK3 isoform - in the control of the alternativespicing of NTRK3 through the downregulation of the splicing repressor PTBP1.
