Virtual reunification of papyrus fragments

Many Greek and Latin papyri, originally belonging to only one book (be it in roll or codex form), are currently scattered among different libraries. While it is not possible to physically rejoin these fragments as they cannot be moved from their institutions, they may be virtually reunited thanks to the techniques of digitisation, image processing and electronic publishing. This paper focuses on some issues – emerged from the work of my MA dissertation – that virtual reunification of Greek and Latin papyri presents. Firstly, I propose a workflow for the creation of a digital edition of virtually rejoined fragments, by applying the model of virtual reunification recently suggested by R. Punzalan in Understanding Virtual Reunification (2014), the first systematic study on this topic. Also, as a principal reference point among the existing projects, I follow the Sinaiticus Project website, which, similarly, deals with an ancient Greek manuscript now dispersed in different institutions; however, while the Sinaiticus Project is exclusively dedicated to that artefact, the edition here proposed includes the possibility to be widened, in order to allow researchers to possibly include more reunified papyri in the future. Secondly, I propose some recommendations that can be followed by the owning institutions in order to digitise their fragments according to a common strategy. Finally, I focus on how a virtual reunification of papyrus fragments can be technically achieved – in other words, how the transcription code can present unified information about the papyrus as a whole and mark the parts of text belonging to each fragment. This project will hopefully help researchers study papyri divided among different libraries in a more systematic way, thanks to the availability of an electronic edition including the whole text and images of the virtually reunited fragments, and thanks to a consolidation of metadata.

Host-parasitoid interactions of Eldana Saccharina (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in Cyperus Papyrus.

Since becoming a pest in graminaceous crops in Africa, the African sugarcane stalkborer Eldana saccharina Walker has been the subject of much study. Its very cryptic habits have precluded more commonly available control measures being used against it. Biological control is regarded as a viable control option, but the apparent paucity of parasitoids in graminaceous crops leads to E. saccharina being regarded as lacking parasitoids, and thus not a good candidate for biological control in the classical sense. In contrast, this project argues that interactions in indigenous hosts of E. saccharina had been ignored, and that classical biocontrol principles and basic ecological theory could be applied by the discovery, collection and introduction of parasitoids from its indigenous habitat to its newly adapted habitat, sugarcane. The habitat offered by Cyperus papyrus L. was shown to be heterogenous both temporarily and spatially. Umbels, from young through mature to senescent, were available in the same proportion for colonisation throughout the year. Umbels with sexual reproductive stages (seeds) were present from early spring into late summer, and provided an additional component to the already heterogenous environment. Young umbels, in addition, developed from rhizomes in an environment regarded as sub-optimal for photosynthesis, until they reached the canopy. All stages of umbels were attacked by E. saccharina, but larvae were only found in rays of umbels and in the apex of the culm, which was the meristematic area for rays, both high nutrient areas. Young umbels were never found with borer pupae, only smaller larvae, indicating that E. saccharina development matched growth of young umbels until they reached canopy height. Also, the majority of borings found were occupied, indicating that infestation of young umbels was recent. All stages of E. saccharina development were found in mature umbels, which were also most abundant at anyone time. Numerous empty borings were found in addition to those occupied, indicative of past occupation by E. saccharina. Very few young larvae were found in old umbels, the majority of life stages found being pupae or empty pupal cases, and also many empty borings, showing that old umbels were not suitable for E. saccharina development. A guild of parasitoids which comprised Orgilus bifasciatus Turner, the most common parasitoid of small and smaller medium E. saccharina larvae, Goniozus indicus Ashmead the most common parasitoid of larger medium and large larvae, and an entomogenous fungus Seauveria bassiana (Sals.) Vuill. attacking all life stages of E. saccharina was found. Three uncommon parasitoids of smaller saccharina were also found, viz. Sassus sublevis (Granger), Iphiaulax sp. and Venturia sp. The former three natural enemies were instrumental in depressing a major outbreak within two months of it being observed and then maintaining the host population at a lower level in C. papyrus. G. indicus and B. bassiana were most effective during the summer and autumn months, and O. bifasciatus most effective during the winter months. This study supports the hypotheses that the apparent paucity of parasitoids and lack of biological control success thus far against E. saccharina in sugarcane has been because very little was known about its ecology and biology in its numerous indigenous host plants, and that studies of the latter factors coupled with ecological theory could enhance biological control programmes against this borer. As more indigenous host plants are investigated in the same way as has been done with C. papyrus, more will become known of natural enemies of E. saccharina. Parasitoid guilds could be selected, even from rare parasitoids in the more stable indigenous habitats, which would provide control in the unstable habitat of sugarcane. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1994.

To this end, we discoursed on the pedagogical potential of the RPG found in some studies, which explore the game as a pedagogical tool. We also presented a brief description of the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus, as far as their parts, organization and content are concerned. From the method of false position, present in the Rhind Papyrus, we tried to develop issues, which were incorporated in the RPG, to introduce the idea of the unknown number. We present, thus, an account of the game application to a group of five students in a public school of Sao Paulo state. This report points to some strategies used by students to solve problems and to the positive and negative aspects of the game. Among the negative aspects we can list the difficulties related to non-linear narrative of the games, the language used in the game besides the fact that not all the students feel motivated to play RPG. With regard to the positive aspects, one can highlight the involvement of some students with problems in the game, which is noted at their attempt to solving problems, showing that the students faced the errors in a positive way / Essa dissertação teve como objetivo a elaboração de um RPG (Role Playing Game), inspirado no Papiro de Rhind, para introduzir a noção de incógnita para alunos do sétimo ano do ensino fundamental. Para tanto, discorremos sobre as potencialidades pedagógicas do RPG presentes em alguns estudos que exploram o jogo como ferramenta pedagógica. Apresentamos também uma breve descrição do Papiro Matemático de Rhind, considerando suas partes, organização e conteúdo. A partir do método de falsa posição, presente no Papiro de Rhind, tentamos elaborar problemas, que foram incorporados no RPG, para introduzir a noção de incógnita. Apresentamos, assim, um relato da aplicação do jogo a um grupo de cinco alunos de uma escola publica estadual da grande São Paulo. Este relato aponta para algumas estratégias utilizadas pelos alunos para resolver os problemas e para os aspectos positivos e negativos do jogo. Dentre os aspectos negativos podemos listar as dificuldades relacionadas com a narrativa não linear das partidas, a linguagem que utilizamos no jogo além do fato de quem nem todos os estudantes se sentem motivados para jogar RPG. Como pontos positivos, podemos apontar para o envolvimento de alguns estudantes com os problemas presentes no jogo, o que é notório nas tentativas que os alunos fizeram para resolver os problemas, denotando que os alunos encararam os erros de uma maneira positiva

Optimizing processes for biological nitrogen removal in Nakivubo wetland, Uganda

The ability of Nakivubo wetland (which has performed tertiary water treatment for Kampala city for the past 40 years) to respond to pollution and to protect the water quality of Inner Murchison Bay of Lake Victoria was investigated. The aim of this study was to assess the capacity of Nakivubo wetland to remove nitrogen from the wastewater after its recent encroachment and modification, in order to optimize biological nitrogen removal processes using constructed wetland technology. Field studies were performed to assess the hydraulic loading, stability and water quality of this wetland. The distribution and activity of ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in Nakivubo channel and wetland were also investigated, and the significance of the different matrices in biological nitrogen transformations within the two systems elucidated. Studies to optimize nutrient removal processes were carried out at pilot scale level both in container experiments and in the field using substrate-free constructed wetlands (CWs) planted with Cyperus papyrus and Miscanthidium violaceum which were adapted to the local ecological conditions. Results showed that Nakivubo wetland performs tertiary treatment for a large volume of wastewater from Kampala city, which is characterised by large quantities of nutrients, organic matter and to a lesser extent metals. Mass pollutant loads showed that wastewater effluent from a sewage treatment plant constituted a larger proportion of nitrogen and phosphorus and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) discharged into the wetland. The upper section of Nakivubo wetland exhibited high removal efficiencies for BOD, whereas little or no ammonium-nitrogen and metals except Lead were removed by wetland. Studies further showed that nitrifying bacteria existed in the wetland but their activity was limited by oxygen depletion due to the high BOD in the wastewater and heterotrophic bacteria from the sewage treatment plant. Distributional studies indicated the presence of more AOB in surface sediments than the water column of the lower section of Nakivubo channel, an indication that nitrifiers settled with particulate matter prior to discharge into the wetland, and thus did not represent seeding of the wetland. The significant reductions in concentrations of BOD compared to ammonium and total nitrogen in the channel and wetland wastewater confirmed this finding. Whereas suspended nitrifiers upstream of Nakivubo channel equally influenced total nitrogen balance as those in surface sediments, epiphytic nitrification was more important than that of sediment/peat compartments in the wetland, and thus highlighted the detrimental impacts of wetland modification on the water quality Inner Murchison Bay and Lake Victoria as a whole. Performance assessment of pilot-scale container experiments and field-based CWs indicated highly promising treatment efficiencies, notably in papyrus-based treatments. Plant biomass productivity, nutrient storage, and overall system treatment performance were higher in papyrusbased constructed wetlands, and resulted in effluent that met national discharge limits. The remote sensing of papyrus vegetation (Cyperus papyrus L.) in swamp wetlands of South Africa.

Papyrus (Cyperus papyrus .L) swamp is the most species rich habitat that play vital hydrological, ecological, and economic roles in central tropical and western African wetlands. However, the existence of papyrus vegetation is endangered due to intensification of agricultural use and human encroachment. Techniques for modelling the distribution of papyrus swamps, quantity and quality are therefore critical for the rapid assessment and proactive management of papyrus vegetation. In this regard, remote sensing techniques provide rapid, potentially cheap, and relatively accurate strategies to accomplish this task. This study advocates the development of techniques based on hyperspectral remote sensing technology to accurately map and predict biomass of papyrus vegetation in a high mixed species environment of St Lucia- South Africa which has been overlooked in scientific research. Our approach was to investigate the potential of hyperspectral remote sensing at two levels of investigation: field level and airborne platform level. First, the study provides an overview of the current use of both multispectral and hyperspectral remote sensing techniques in mapping the quantity and the quality of wetland vegetation as well as the challenges and the need for further research. Second, the study explores whether papyrus can be discriminated from each one of its coexistence species (binary class). Our results showed that, at full canopy cover, papyrus vegetation can be accurately discriminated from its entire co-existing species using a new hierarchical method based on three integrated analysis levels and field spectrometry under natural field conditions. These positive results prompted the need to test the use of canopy hyperspectral data resampled to HYMAP resolution and two machine learning algorithms in identifying key spectral bands that allowed for better discrimination among papyrus and other co-existing species (n = 3) (multi-class classification). Results showed that the random forest algorithm (RF) simplified the process by identifying the minimum number of spectral bands that provided the best overall accuracies. Narrow band NDVI and SR-based vegetation indices calculated from hyperspectral data as well as some vegetation indices published in literature were investigated to test their potential in improving the classification accuracy of wetland plant species. The study also evaluated the robustness and reliability of RF as a variables selection method and as a classification algorithm in identifying key spectral bands that allowed for the successful classification of wetland species. Third, the focus was to upscale the results of field spectroscopy analysis to airborne hyperspectral sensor (AISA eagle) to discriminate papyrus and it co-existing species. The results indicated that specific wavelengths located in the visible, red-edge, and near-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum have the highest potential of discriminating papyrus from the other species. Finally, the study explored the ability of narrow NDVI-based vegetation indices calculated from hyperspectral data in predicting the green above ground biomass of papyrus. The results demonstrated that papyrus biomass can be modelled with relatively low error of estimates using a non-linear RF regression algorithm. This provided a basis for the algorithm to be used in mapping wetland biomass in highly complex environments. Overall, the study has demonstrated the potential of remote sensing techniques in discriminating papyrus swamps and its co-existing species as well as in predicting biomass. Compared to previous studies, the RF model applied in this study has proved to be a robust, accurate, and simple new method for variables selection, classification, and modelling of hyperspectral data. Contributions à la reconstitution, à l'édition et à l'étude des archives papyrologiques dites d'Hèrôninos

L’objectif principal de ma thèse était de réaliser l’édition de papyrus issus des archives dites d’Hèrôninos. Ce personnage était intendant d’une unité de production agricole rattachée au village de Théadelphie, dans le Fayoum, au IIIe s. de notre ère. Il travaillait pour le compte d’un aristocrate alexandrin du nom d’Appianos, qui possédait diverses terres un peu partout en Égypte. Hèrôninos devait régulièrement informer son patron de la gestion de son unité et tenir à jour ses comptes avec minutie. Le hasard a voulu que l’on retrouve sa correspondance et son importante comptabilité ;les différentes pièces des archives ont été réparties entre plusieurs collections dans le monde.<p>Dans ma dissertation doctorale, j'ai proposé l’édition, la traduction et le commentaire de 97 textes, lettres et comptes inédits qui proviennent des collections de Prague, de Londres et de Florence. Ces documents confirment bien souvent ce que l’on savait de l’organisation du domaine géré par Hèrôninos ;ils apportent néanmoins de nombreuses informations sur la topographie et la toponymie du domaine ainsi que sur la prosopographie des ouvriers. Je ne me suis cependant pas limité à l’édition d’inédits :j’ai en effet entrepris, chaque fois que j'ai pu avoir accès au matériel, une révision systématique des documents déjà publiés. Au total, les révisions de textes publiés par les chercheurs qui m’ont précédé ont abouti à des résultats parfois surprenants et spectaculaires :dans certains cas, il a fallu revoir complètement l’interprétation des documents.<p>À côté du travail éditorial à proprement parler, j’ai réalisé un travail « d’archéologie muséale », c’est-à-dire que j’ai tenté de retracer l’histoire de la dispersion des pièces des archives à travers le monde et essayé de comprendre par quels canaux les documents sont arrivés en Europe, en Amérique ou dans des collections égyptiennes. Cette question restait encore largement inexplorée. Je pense avoir fait avancer notre connaissance en la matière. J’ai montré que la majorité des achats ont été réalisés au tout début du XXe siècle auprès de deux marchands d’antiquités égyptiens :ʿAlī al-ʿArabī et Faraǧ ʿAlī. J’ai en outre consacré une large partie de ma thèse à des questions de diplomatique, aspect largement négligé jusqu'à présent. On ne peut plus, comme on l’a trop souvent fait dans le passé, éditer un document sans étudier ses aspects matériels. Les papyrus des archives d’Hèrôninos n’échappent pas à ce constat :ils présentent une mise en page particulière et sont rédigés selon des codes bien précis qu’il convenait de mettre en évidence. <p>\ / Doctorat en Langues et lettres / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

The Brooklyn Papyrus (47.218.48 and 47.218.85) and its snakebite treatments

Bibliography: leaves 515-531 / The Brooklyn Papyrus (47.218.48 and 47.218.85) is the handbook of the Priests of Serqet who were called upon to treat snakebite victims in ancient Egypt. The first part of the Brooklyn Papyrus describes various snakes encountered by the ancient Egyptians, and the effects of the bites of these snakes. The second part of the Papyrus contains the numerous treatments that were used to treat the snakebite victims. The primary question of the thesis is to address how the ancient Egyptians treated snakebite victims; and if it is possible to identify the snakes that they encountered, as treatment often hinges on this identification. Additional questions are addressed, namely: What is the Brooklyn Papyrus exactly and what is its background? How does the Brooklyn Papyrus compare to the well-known ancient Egyptian medical papyri? How does the snakebite treatment of the ancient Egyptians compare to that of today’s treatment protocol? In order to answer these questions, this thesis provides my transliteration of the hieroglyphic writing into Latin script, and my translation into English, based on the hieratic to hieroglyphic transliteration done by Serge Sauneron in the late 1960s, and published in 1989 as Un Traité Egyptien d’Ophiologie. The primary aim of this thesis is to provide a transliteration and full English translation of the Brooklyn Papyrus, as none is currently available. It is clear that from the translation that one can discover exactly how snakebite was treated in ancient Egypt: what medicinal ingredients were used and how the patient was treated. Furthermore, from the text describing the snakes and the effects of their bites, one can indeed attempt to identify the species of snakes. It is also apparent from the Brooklyn Papyrus that the ancient Egyptians did recognise and accurately describe many effects of snakebite on the human body, as well as the different types of bite wounds: and they also understood the importance of being able to identify a species of snake as it very often impacted on the treatment to be prescribed—exactly as snakebite treatment is considered in medicine today / Biblical and Ancient studies / D. Les Artisans du texte. La culture de scribe en Égypte ancienne d’après les sources du Nouvel Empire / Textual craftsmen. Scribes’ culture and self-fashioning in New Kingdom, Ancient Egypt

Au Nouvel Empire (1539-1075 av. J.-C.), les scribes – « ceux qui écrivent » en égyptien – prennent le devant de la scène dans les sources littéraires. Ils construisent et promeuvent une image d’eux-mêmes, qui révèle l’existence d’une communauté et d’un « monde social » (A. Strauss), fondés non pas sur la classe mais sur l’appartenance à une profession. Parmi les textes consacrés au métier de scribe, les florilèges appelés « miscellanées » ou « Enseignement par lettres » constituent une sorte de vademecum de la production écrite de l’époque, qui accompagne le scribe dans sa carrière et jusque dans sa tombe. Ils fonctionnent comme des véritables machines à produire d’autres textes, quand les deux autres types d’enseignements de l’époque, « l’Enseignement pour délier l’esprit » (les onomastica) et les « Enseignements par exemples » (les sagesses) portent respectivement sur le savoir théorique et le savoir pratique. Les scribes braconnent dans les modes d’expression du sommet de la société pour développer leur code de valeurs, qui repose sur l’éducation, les compétences au travail et leur rôle de transmetteurs (et non pas de créateurs). Des structures sociales fondées sur les relations professionnelles plutôt que familiales sont mises en avant. L’émergence d’une telle conscience communautaire se fait dans les termes des mutations idéologiques en cours. Une place plus grande est accordée à l’individu dans la société en mettant de côté les autorités traditionnelles au profit d’une divinité personnelle toute puissante. Les scribes peuvent ainsi faire de l’écriture une pratique de piété placée sous l’égide de Thot – les écrits leur survivront après la mort et assureront leur postérité. Chaque manuscrit devient un possible monument funéraire à travers le colophon. Les scribes réinvestissent en outre les tombes traditionnelles qu’ils visitent, en y laissant, sous la forme de graffiti, des textes commémoratifs à leur bénéfice mais aussi des offrandes littéraires.Cette promotion du mot écrit par rapport au discours trouve un écho dans les biographies monumentales des très hauts dignitaires et témoigne d’une diffusion des idéaux lettrés à l’époque. / In the New Kingdom (c. 1539-1075 BC) scribes – ‘those who write in Egyptian’ – took a prominent role in literary texts. There they constructed and promoted a self-image, framing themselves as the members of a specific ‘social world’ defined by their profession rather than belonging to a social class.This period corresponds to the flourishing of sources dedicated to the scribal trade, especially the Late Egyptian Miscellanies aka ‘Teaching by letters’. These collections of small texts were scribal tools and a vademecum of the textual production of the time. Kept by the scribe throughout his career and accompanying him to his tomb, they were a device for producing other texts, while the two other types of teaching, ‘Teaching to clear the mind’ (onomastica) and ‘Teaching from examples’ (wisdom texts) dealt respectively with theoretical and practical knowledge.Scribes borrowed phraseology from the top-elite to develop their own code of values, which was based on education, craftsmanship and personal skills. Social structures dependent on professional relationships rather than family were promoted. The development of such a community feeling reflected changes of ideology in progress at the time. A new position was granted to the individual in society through the shift of allegiance from traditional authorities to a personal, almighty god. Thus scribes could turn writing into a pious practice under the aegis of Thot – texts and copies would survive them and grant them posterity. Each manuscript became a potential funerary monument through colophons and signatures. Furthermore, scribes used the decorum of traditional tombs where they left prayers and commemorations as graffiti to their own benefit along with literary offerings. This promotion of the written word over the spoken one is echoed in monumental biographies of the top-elite and bears witness to the diffusion of learned values during this period.
