Preparing Leaders for Strategic Sustainable Development : A Case Study of the Teach for Austria Leadership Education

Fälbl, Jana, Wicki, Marc, Vrolijk, Sophie, Gonzalez, Maria Alejandra January 2019 (has links)
There is an urgent need to have leaders who are able to strategically transition society towards sustainability. Evidence shows that challenges are mounting up and become increasingly complex. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) aims to educate leaders to become competent to lead within the sustainability challenge we are facing. This thesis explores how leadership education can prepare teachers to become leaders to enable Strategic Sustainable Development (SSD). Based on interviews with ESD experts, the research team identified eight key competencies for leaders to enable Strategic Sustainable Development and eight pedagogical approaches to train such competencies. In addition to that, the research team analyzed how the case study organization Teach for Austria (TFA) integrates the identified key competencies and pedagogical approaches. Recommendations are provided indicating TFA’s opportunities regarding a more thorough integration of the key competencies and pedagogical approaches into their leadership education. These recommendations were then made relevant to the broader leadership education context to prepare teachers to lead. The main outcomes of this thesis intend to serve as a guidance to enable leadership the world needs.

Les formes d'accompagnement et de médiation dans le système éducatif congolais : réalités et perspectives / Forms of accompaniment and mediation in the Congolese educational system (DRC) : realities and perspectives

Seruhungo, Désiré 18 September 2018 (has links)
Education in the DRC (Republic Democratic of Congo) favors some students and disadvantages others because it offers all the students a single learning path, regardless of their learning style. Which explains the failures and the abandonments. This is the case of street and demobilized child soldiers who, due to lack of supervision, may be a social danger. However, if these young people had been oriented towards school structures corresponding to their rhythms and learning styles, they could integrate into society. Unfortunately, they do not exist. For the education system that benefiting everyone, the DRC authorities should open up the school system with new pedagogical approaches, train teachers, give them a good salary, build new schools and equip them.

Educação sexual intencional em livros para a infância : um estudo de suas vertentes pedagógicas / Intentional sexual education in books for children: a study of pedagogical approaches

Kornatzki, Luciana 27 February 2013 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-12-08T16:35:04Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 luciana k.pdf: 7838653 bytes, checksum: fddd5815a8c4a0bddae6ce67b0710b43 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-02-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This work analyzed the textual contents of intentional sexual education books destined for children, aiming at providing studies and proposals on emancipatory sexual education. For that, interfaces between sexual education and literature were revealed; a review of emancipatory sexual education by Brazilian authors was made; a theoretical study of the five pedagogical approaches to sexual education pointed by Nunes (1996) was made, raising indicators to subside the books content analysis; and, the textual contents of selected books destined for children were analyzed, leading to categories. The methodological paths were based on the dialectical method, having as instrument documental research via content analysis. The corpus consisted of six books, two Brazilian, two Spanish and two Ecuadorian. The theoretical framework was based initially on the pedagogical approaches to sexual education coined by Nunes (1996), four of which are considered repressive and one emancipatory. The Declaration of Sexual Rights as Universal Human Rights was taken into account as it is considered an expression of emancipatory sexual education. Thus, from the approaches and the declaration, indicators were raised that supported the content analysis of the corpus. From this analysis two categories were apprehended, which are subdivided into subcategories. It is worth remembering that these categories express the very dialectical and contradictory movement that is part of human living in the world and of the (re)construction of sexuality. The first category unveiled was: "in search of the right to information, based on scientific knowledge, the contradiction of standardization norms of relations between people." This category expresses that although progress has been made in the proposed work in books for children and scientific knowledge has been valued, in some cases this knowledge is presented as normalizing a biological standard of the being and also reinforcing a standard of human relations. Arising from this category, we have two subcategories: the standardization of biological reductionism with biases in scientific information and the standardization of the heteronormative relations model. The second category unveiled was: "in search of sexual rights as human rights, marks of a construction process of emancipatory sexual education." In this category were noted various indications of the pedagogical use of the Declaration of Sexual Rights, yielding the following subcategories: marks of the right to comprehensive sexual education and the right to information based on scientific knowledge focused on affectivity and sexual self knowledge; marks of the right to sexual pleasure; marks of the right to free and responsible reproductive choices; marks of the right to sexual health with focus on sexual body safety, and marks of the right to freedom and sexual equality with a focus on respect for sexual diversity. Contradictions and improvements were perceived in sexual education for children, unveiled from the analysis of the books, as well as the importance of having a critical pedagogical outlook on their contents. The present study provides reflections on the aforementioned books that can be of great value to teachers of children, helping in the teaching process. Furthermore, the study may also impact on new teachers formation, helping them in their reflective processes about children s sexual education / Este trabalho analisou os conteúdos textuais de livros de educação sexual intencional para a infância, visando subsidiar estudos e propostas em educação sexual emancipatória.

A Holistic Approach to the Ontario Curriculum: Moving to a More Coherent Curriculum

Neves, Ana Cristina Trindade 14 December 2009 (has links)
This study is an interpretive form of qualitative research that is founded in educational connoisseurship and criticism, which uses the author’s personal experiences as a holistic educator in a public school to connect theory and practice. Key research questions include: How do I, as a teacher, work with the Ontario curriculum to make it more holistic? What strategies have I developed in order to teach a more holistic curriculum? What kinds of difficulties interfere with my practice as I attempt to implement my holistic philosophy of education? This dissertation seeks to articulate a methodology for developing holistic curriculum that is in conformity with Ontario Ministry guidelines and is also responsive to the multifaceted needs of the whole student. The research findings will serve to inform teachers who wish to engage in holistic education in public schools and adopt a curriculum that is transformative while still being adaptable within mainstream education.

We Can Do It (Education) Better: An Examination of Four Secondary School Approaches for Aboriginal Students in Northwestern Ontario

Landon, Rocky 17 December 2012 (has links)
The following study is an exercise in understanding how educators can improve their professional practice in terms of addressing the needs of Aboriginal high school students. The study was delimited to four different high schools in Northwestern Ontario in order to develop a broader understanding of best practices used by various school communities. Interviews were conducted with students and educational professionals such as teachers, administrators, guidance personnel and school board members. The study was completed over a period of one week, where one day was spent in each school completing interviews. This study is unique in two ways: it presents the voices of secondary school educators (which had scarcely been reported or heard in the academic community) outlining the direction in which Aboriginal education should go and secondly, as a researcher I attempted to use the medicine wheel as a model for completing and conducting research. There were a number of findings that appeared through the interviews. Teachers and administrators agreed that in order for Aboriginal students to succeed they needed to have involved parental support. It was important to teachers that parents take an active role in the educational life of their child. Additionally, it was acknowledged that First Nation communities were ideal settings for schooling of Aboriginal students as they were supported by family and community kinships. Yet in this study, it was also acknowledged that First Nation schools suffered financially in comparison to provincial schools. They were not able to provide programming comparable to provincial schools and iii were limited to a barebones program with compulsory courses being offered. In some cases, if students failed a course, they were not able to participate in the rest of the school program, until the course was re-taught in two years. Despite these shortcomings, students might do better in First Nation based schools if they were adequately funded with current resources and adequately compensated teachers. This study offers some suggestions on how to improve the practice of educating First Nation secondary students.

The perception of faculty members of Namibian open distance learning institutions on the use of open educational resources

Karipi, Edwig 24 July 2020 (has links)
Abstract in English, Xhosa and Venda / Open educational resources (OER) is a new innovation coined to bridge the educational divide by way of providing free quality learning resources. Consequently, this study explored the perception of the faculty members of the Namibian open and distance learning institutions on the use of OER as a pedagogical approach. This study was prompted by the presumption that if ODL institutions adopt open educational resources to replace costly textbooks, an increased number of the Namibian population could access education in the equitable manner. The study focused on faculty members from the three public ODL institutions in Namibia, namely, the Namibian College of Open Learning (NAMCOL), University of Namibia (UNAM)-Centre for Open, Distance and eLearning (CODeL) and Namibian University of Science and Technology (NUST)-Centre of Open and Lifelong Learning (COLL). The following integrated theories were adopted to underpin this study: Transformative Learning Theory, Heutagogy Learning Theory, Cognitive Learning Theory and Social Learning Theory, Constructivism Learning Theory, Connectivism Theory and the Diffusion of Innovations Theory. The theories were compared to the findings to assess their applicability. This is a qualitative case underpinned by an interpretivist paradigm. Data were collected through interviews, non-participant observations and document analysis, and analysed through the inductive approach. The results of this study showed inconsistency between the perception of the faculty members and the use of OER within the ODL institutions in Namibia. Although the faculty members displayed positive attitudes towards the use of OER, very little has been achieved in the use of OER within the institutions for the benefit of the Namibian ODL students. The study identified challenges that impede the adoption of OER at institutional level, such as lack of institutional policies, lack of awareness, technological factors, as well as management support. The study further crafted strategies to address challenges, including the OER design based on the Diffusion of Innovation Model. The study advanced recommendations for consideration by the institutions and the faculty members as well as suggestions for future research. The knowledge contribution made by this PhD is the proposed OER design for adoption by the ODL institutions to facilitate the use of OER by faculty members. / Ubuchule bokufunda ekuthiwa yiOpen Educational Resources (OER) licebo elitsha lokunikezela simahla ngemithombo yokufunda esemgangathweni, nelenzelwe ukukhawulelana nobunzima bokushiyashiyana emfundweni. Esi sifundo siphonononge indlela abacinga ngayo abahlohli bamaziko emfundo aseNamibia avulekileyo nafundisa abafundi bekude (iiODL), ngokusetyenziswa kweOER njengendlela yokufundisa. Esi sifundo sisuswe kukucingela ukuba xa amaziko emfundo avulekileyo nafundisa abafundi bekude enokusebenzisa izixhobo zokufunda ezivulekileyo endaweni yokusebenzisa iincwadi ezibiza imali eninzi, linganda inani labantu abanokuxhamla imfundo ngokulinganayo. Ezi ngcingane ziye zathelekiswa nokufunyanisisweyo ngenjongo yokukhangela ukuba zingasebenziseka kusini na. Kusetyenziswe indlela yophando ngokuzathuza nokutolika izimvo ezahlukeneyo. Iinkcukacha zolwazi okanye idatha yaqokelelwa ngokuqhuba udliwano ndlebe nabathatha inxaxheba, ukuqwalasela abangathathi nxaxheba nokuphengulula imibhalo ukuze kudalwe ingcingane entsha. Iziphumo zesi sifundo zivelise ukungahambelani phakathi kwengcinga yabahlohli nokusetyenziswa kweOER kumaziko emfundo avulekileyo nafundisa abafundi bekude eNamibia. Nangona abahlohli bebonakalisa uthakazelelo ngokusebenzisa iOER, kuncinci kakhulu okwenziweyo malunga nokusebenzisa iOER kumaziko emfundo ekuncedeni abafundi baseNamibia kumaziko avulekileyo nafundisa abafundi bekude. Esi sifundo sichonge imingeni ethibaza ukusetyenziswa kweOER kumaziko emfundo, mingeni leyo ifana nokungabikho kwemigaqo nkqubo, ukungabikho lwazi, imiba yobuchwepheshe kwakunye nentswela nkxaso yabalawuli.
