Previous issue date: 2010-03-31 / This research aims to promote reflection on the distortion of the gospel music of the Pentecostal movement in Goiania. For this purpose, will discuss the interaction between music and Radio Paz FM 89.5, considering the impact of globalization and, more specifically, the cultural industry in the expansion of the musical style known today as gospel. This study also examines the integration and the similarity of the Gospel song with the music called pop, that is developed out of religious grounds, pointing out similarities in the instrumentation, arrangements, musical, performances, radio broadcasting, television and public reception. The systematization of the research occurs in three chapters, each one makes a specific approach, based on the methods of critical by Imbert: historic and sociologist as well as the considerations of Guy Debord, in relation to the show. The observation with regard to Radio Paz FM 89.5 lasted twenty months. The theoretical framework was constructed from the results of responses obtained in interviews. The first chapter is focused on the historical field, addressing the development of religious music in the Old and New Testament Bible, the establishment of the Church in the Middle Ages and the religious reforms according to Grout Palisca, Collins Price and Stamps. The second chapter explores the Gospel, from its origins to the present time based on the reflections of Friendland, Baggio, Muggiati and Calado. The first part of the third chapter discusses the musicality of religion in Brazil and in Goiás , more specifically the history of Pentecostalism and the musical development of this segment supported by the authors of the social sphere: Mariano, Freston and Weber. Achieving the goals of this research, the second part presents Radio Paz FM 89.5, relating to the current context, called postmodern, based on various researchers - Featherstone, Lyotard, Harvey and others - within the globalization process, including the issue of globalization, the spectacle and consumption. Conclude that Gospel music is the great current phenomenon. You can ensure that this research represents only the beginning of the study of this phenomenon that tends to arouse more and more the interest of religious communities, evangelical or not.

Re-Imagining Civic Influence in Contemporary Uganda : A Study of Pentecostalism´s Role in the Empowerment of Kampala YouthBagne Weinstock, Vincent January 2019 (has links)
This thesis explores what role Pentecostalism has as an emerging actor in Uganda in terms of empowering the largely marginalised youth population. Therefore, the purpose of the thesis is to examine how Pentecostalism may contribute to youth´s participation and influence in society and, as such, the realisation of their civil rights as the sovereigns of the country. Based on two months of field research, the thesis is constituted mainly by empirical material from interviews with Pentecostal youth1 in Kampala, as well as contextualising secondary material. This material is then analysed through a theoretical framework based, mainly, on agency theory as it explores the social circumstances in which the agency of the youth is both disabled and enabled, as well as marginalisation and identity-making theory. First, it is argued that the generational gap, characterised by patronage, as well as government`s deployment of physical and psychical violence against youth has worked against the youth and deprived them of their agency. Second, it is argued that Pentecostal churches empower youth to critically reflect over their marginalised position in society, out of which as sense of agency may grow at an individual level. Finally, it is argued that as the churches establishes constructive behaviours among the church youth, this has positively contributed to their social standing in society and the realisation of their civic influence. In turn, potentially contributing also to the wider youth population´s influence, as well as the democratic development and security in Uganda.

Piety, Intimacy and Mobility : A Case Study of Charismatic Christianity in Present-day StockholmMoberg, Jessica January 2013 (has links)
Stockholm County is a post-industrial Swedish region characterized by high levels of mobility and technologization as well as ethnic and religious diversity. Among its religious minorities exist various strands of charismatic Christianity, some of which originate from the Pentecostal revival of the early 20th century and some of which belong to more recent movements. The aim of this ethnographic study is to examine how affiliates of the multicultural charismatic Christian congregation New Life Church practice religiosity within the context of their personal daily lives, within the framework of the general congregation and in terms of their involvements with other religious organizations in the area of Stockholm. Beginning with the assumption that the practice of contemporary religiosity and the development of a religious identity are part of an ongoing process of habituation, the study describes how practitioners cultivate a form of charismatic piety characterized by certain embodied orientations, patterns of ritualization and narrative genres. To shed further light on this process, it draws upon a variety of theories concerning ritualization, embodiment, performance, narratives and materiality. Apart from this, the study also constitutes an attempt to explore and measure the impact on the practitioners’ religiosity of late modern developments such as urbanization, detraditionalization and global mobility as well as the growing absorption in consumerism, emotional intimacy and the unfolding of the “authentic” inner self. While pursuing these ends, the study also calls into question previous assumptions about charismatic Christianity in Sweden, most particularly the assumption that today’s practitioners remain inclined to be entirely faithful to one given institution and its system of beliefs and practices. Indeed this view is directly challenged herein by the finding that contemporary charismatics are far more inclined to eclectically appropriate elements and models of thoughts from various contexts of origin as well as to affiliate with and/or visit multiple Christian institutions.

Le mouvement pentecôtiste - une communauté alternative au sud du Burundi 1935-1960Nyberg Oskarsson, Gunilla January 2004 (has links)
This thesis is a contribution to a hitherto neglected area of research: The African Pentecostal Churches, that do not belong to those called African Indigenous Churches (AICs). It is a case study from the perspective of southern Burundi, the periphery of the ancient kingdom. The Pentecostal Movement in Burundi was born in the encounter between Swedish Pentecostal missionaries and the population in the southern part of the country. This study highlights what happened in that encounter. The thesis consists of six parts. The first is a survey of the Pentecostal Movement in Sweden. The diachronic structure of parts two to five focuses on the development within the Burundian Pentecostal Churches and their relationship to the Burundian society 1935-1960. In the sixth part the diachronic approach is augmented by structural analyses, showing how aspects in the Pentecostal Movement developed. The Pentecostal missionaries accepted in part the traditional world view, the belief in a spiritual world and non-rational explanations to misfortunes in life. They encouraged the Burundians to do spiritual experiences, and especially the baptism in the Holy Ghost. The Burundian evangelists and church elders played a decisive role. It was their task to reformulate the Pentecostal message in Kirundi, which was not spoken by the missionaries. They moulded the message into a Burundian Pentecostal message, at the same time respecting the teaching of the early missionaries. They succeeded in doing that so well that the Pentecostal Movement became a popular movement, in certain places the dominating Christian denomination, in spite of the parallel work done by the Catholic Church, encouraged and supported by the Belgian state. This thesis builds on material taken mainly from unpublished sources from archives in Burundi, Sweden, Rome, Great Britain and Denmark. These are supplemented by interviews, most of them made by the author.

The impact of faith-healing Pentecostal churches on health and well-being among health-seekers in Ndola, Zambia.Matimelo, Audrey. January 2007 (has links)
This study, which lies within the ARHAP ongoing research on the interface between religion and public health, examined the impact of Faith-Healing Pentecostal Churches on health and well-being among health-seekers in Ndola, Zambia. The study involved a self-administered questionnaire answered by 100 Faith-Healing Pentecostal Church worshippers in Ndola over a period of 4 weeks. Based on the data analysis and interpretation it was found that these churches have grown rapidly in Zambia and that many people are turning to them for their healing and well-being. There are several factors that are contributing to the rapid growth of Faith-Healing Pentecostal Churches and these range from socio-economic problems to the impact of diseases like HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis on households, due to the poor health provision in most government health centres in Ndola. The study notes that people attend Faith-Healing Pentecostal Churches because these churches provide a home for people in need of social networks which enable them to have a sense of identity, belonging and purpose amidst their day-to-day socio-economic challenges. It was therefore evident from the research that Faith-Healing Pentecostal Churches are addressing huge socio-economic needs in people's lives within a context of poverty, unemployment and the burden of sicknesses and diseases, and can rightly be understood as a Religious Health Asset. These findings also provide the context for four important insights into a contemporary and contextual theology of health and healing. Based on the findings of this study, this dissertation offers a number of challenges to public health policy makers and church leaders to take serious the interface between religion and public health, and to also take seriously the contribution that Faith-Healing Pentecostal Churches are making to health and well-being in Ndola, Zambia. When these two issues are taken seriously, it would help to address issues of health and well-being in communities, based on people's religious convictions and understanding of health, healing and well-being. / Thesis (M.Th.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2007.

Since the second half of the 19th century, the Guatemalan religious landscape has undergone important transformations. The advent and the exceptional expansion of new protestant movements have prompted the progressive reorganization of the religious space which was, until then, relatively homogenous and triggered ideological confrontations between the various belief systems. In this tumultuous coexistence, shamanism must struggle to preserve its pertinence and to avoid falling into oblivion. By analyzing the therapeutic activity, this thesis aims at elucidating the shamanic-pentecostal relational dynamic. The portrait of the religious context and the historical developments are used as a basis for the study of the mutual perceptions between shamans, pastors and converts. This approach allows us to shed some new light onto the curanderos and brujos’ perceptions of the pentecostal pastor within the guatemalan medico-religious pluralism. However, it also allows us to deepen our understanding of the degrading perception of ancestral beliefs within the pentecostal movement. These viewpoints and the observation of the respective curative rituals thus lead me to consider closely the connections existing between these two a priori distinct universes whereas certain continuations on the therapeutic level between the two belief systems can be perceived. The field investigation finally suggests that in parallel to these perceptions and similarities, the presence of the pentecostal movement have influenced shamanic practices, leading holders of traditional knowledge to operate apparent modifications into the plan of their own ritual practices, customs and beliefs according to the pentecostal system of values.

Die erediens as uitdrukking van die dinamiese ontmoeting tussen God en mens : 'n pentakostalistiese perspektief / Andreas Petrus du PreezDu Preez, Andreas Petrus January 2014 (has links)
Pentecostalism has, in recent times, undeniably contributed towards the growth of the
church as a whole. Public worship services inherently submit and contribute towards the
meeting between man and God as well as fellowship between the people who form part of
said service. Public services in honor of God speak to the purposes of God and man’s
fundamental desire to meet with our Creator. Consequently, research into this phenomenon
proves vital in determining and even extending the role of the Pentecostal ideology in
correlation to the longevity of honorary public services.
Chapters 2 through 4 shed light on some of the key concepts that clarifies the dynamic
nature of these events, throughout the service wherein the radiant power of God touches the
human heart in some astounding ways.
Exegetic studies have been undertaken into 2 Chronicles 5-7 which examines these
instances of divine meeting in the Old Testament while the second chapter of Acts deals with
the event from a New Testament perspective. In addition to this, 1 Corinthians 11-14 was
utilized to highlight the role of the Holy Ghost as the instigator for divine meeting.
Specific issues addressed by the research include service preparation and the role of music
and its contribution to ambience preceding a meeting between man and God. Moreover, a
keen focus on the sermon and the delivery thereof as well as its progression leading up to
the conclusion and summary in closing and prayer, are all dealt with as part of this study.
This dynamic, in essence, becomes visible through the statement issued by the life of each
disciple as a living testament to this consuming and changing event. Honorary public
services fit the bill as an event to promote divine meeting.
Chapter 5 delves into some of the auxiliary sciences i.e. sociology, communication science,
psychology and the field of antropology. The principles in chapters 2 through 4 are affirmed
by these aspects of science and provide perspective on the practical applications thereof.
All these factors in relation to practice have also been scrutinized through empirical
research. This research clearly places divine meeting as a central to and inseparable from
perceiver experience.
Chapter 7 provides practical guidelines to alternative approaches in practicum. The study
proposes a model whereby certain aspects can be examined from a Pentecostal point of
view in order to tailor services as a dais for divine meeting. Most importantly it should be
evident in the life of the participant that they have truly encounter God. This meeting is the
prime objective and at the heart of public service. It serves and should always serve as a
doorway to Christian life. / PhD (Liturgics), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

A missiological study of Pentecostal churches in an informal settlement in Nairobi, KenyaSmith, Colin Graham 28 February 2007 (has links)
East Africa, with Nairobi at its hub, is currently experiencing unprecedented rates of urban population growth. Much of this growth is absorbed into informal settlements which, in the case of Nairobi, house over 55% of the city's population. The largest of these settlements is Kibera with a population totaling approximately 700,000.
The thesis focuses on Pentecostal churches in Gatwikera, one of the twelve urban villages which together make up Kibera. It is argued that what is emerging within these communities is a distinctive type of church which is defined as informal Pentecostal. Consideration is given to why mainline churches appear to struggle within the informal sector while these churches appear to thrive. The explanation for this is given in the way the Pentecostal churches emerge along the same lines as the informal economy. The thesis sets out to identify the distinctive nature of the churches and the way in which they exemplify a different form of Christian presence in the settlements to that of mainline churches and Roho churches. The study offers an analysis of their ministry and their pastors and considers their relationship to the flows of the rural urban continuum and the liminality of informal settlements.
The study seeks to identify the contribution these churches make to mission within the community particularly looking at their role in social transformation. It concludes that while the churches provide an important Christian presence within the community and social capital to enable people to better survive and retain hope within the settlements they offer little towards the much needed social transformation within the settlements. It is further argued that for this to be achieved, attention needs to be given to the development of appropriate forms of training and the facilitation of higher degrees of networking and collaboration.
The thesis is structured around the pastoral cycle which forms both the theoretical framework and the research methodology. The suitability of the pastoral cycle as a research method is explored within the thesis. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D.Th. (Missiology)

The other side of the mountain : initiatives of a younger Pentecostal generationGorman, Roger Dale 11 1900 (has links)
Pentecostal churches are growing significantly across the world, but occasionally
theological tensions arise within Pentecostal churches, sometimes related to intergenerational
differences, which hinder both quantitative and qualitative growth. This study
analyses the dynamics of a particular generation gap in one South African Pentecostal
congregation. It explores the initiatives of a cell group from the younger generation,
aimed at enhancing the credibility and effectiveness of the congregation's witness.
The cell group initiatives highlighted issues of leadership, biblical hermeneutics, and
the need for a theological re-assessment of local traditions that had always acted as
identity markers for the older generation. This study contends that the conflict between
a more collectivist older generation and a more individualist younger generation can be
bridged through well prepared conflict resolution processes led by credible intervention
teams and through some form of accommodation of the views and desires of both
generations. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D.Th. (Missiology)
