People with disabilities and service providers’ experiences of community based rehabilitation in Rwanda

Dusaberurema, Dieudonne January 2009 (has links)
Masters of Science / Background: Globally the number of people with disabilities (PWDs) is escalating especially in developing countries. Different approaches and strategies have been used to care for PWDs but could not meet their expectations. Community Based Rehabilitation(CBR) is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as the strategy to address their needs using both the medical and social model. CBR was established and implemented in two areas of Rwanda ten years ago with overall objectives that aim to facilitate accessibility to CBR service and full participation of PWDs in the community. However, the number of PWDs accessing rehabilitation services in Rwanda is still limited.Since the CBR programme started in Rwanda, there has been a lack of information on whether the CBR services provided by these two programmes are meeting the needs of PWDs and whether they facilitated the service providers to deliver the services more easily as intended. The aim of this study was to determine the experiences of PWDs and service providers of the Inkurunziza and Gahini CBR programmes in Rwanda.A qualitative method of data collection used in the study included focus group discussions with the selected PWDs. In-depth interviews were conducted with a purposively selected sample of service providers. This study was carried out at two day centers one from the Inkurunziza CBR programme and the other from Gahini CBR programme. The results revealed that the CBR programmes have increased the number of PWDs accessing CBR services. Services provided at these centres addressed some of the needs of PWDs, which included provision of assistive devices, and rehabilitation services, which were accessible. Most of the participants claimed that the programme is not doing anything to help them with activities that can assist to generate income and facilitate accessibility to schools or vocational training. The study findings indicated that services delivered in both CBR programmes only addressed some of the needs of the PWDs accessing the two CBR programmes. The service providers reported that they found it difficult to reach certain areas to provide CBR services to PWD due to geographical constraints. It is recommended that the CBR services provided by the two programmes need to focus more on education, training and employment of PWDs.

Identity Constructions of People with Disability in German Film. An Analysis of the sensory Disabilities Deafness and Blindness in Jenseits der Stille and Erbsen auf Halb Sechs

Geyer, Anne January 2014 (has links)
To date, the subject of disability has been highly disregarded in Germany’s academia. In the field of Arts, the topic is a derivative. This thesis makes a contribution to the discipline of Disability Studies and approaches the problematic from the field of German Studies. The analysis focuses on the sensory disabilities deafness and blindness and its depiction in the movies Jenseits der Stille und Erbsen auf Halb Sechs. The goal of this paper is to attract notice to the ways of representation of disability in German media in general. On the one hand, film reflects generally accepted public attitudes. But since film is a mass media, it has the potency to alter and question the communal opinion on the other hand. Thus, it can change society’s mindset about people with disability. Furthermore, this paper points out the different starting points for further liberal arts oriented approaches for investigations of disability in the media. However, the film analysis is based on two theses. The first one claims that the focus in the representation of people with disability does not concentrate on the human beings. On the contrary, it rather concentrates on the disability itself and the consequences that spring of it. The second thesis pursues this thought and says that the movies not only focus on the depiction of disability. In fact the disabled figures define themselves by their handicap and, in return, are defined by their physical aberrance by their social surroundings, which is foremost not disabled. Thereby, the disability forms an almost insuperable interpersonal obstacle. The analysis of the two movies is done along three research questions. The first one concerns the connection of physical handicap and the way people with disability think and act in relation to their surroundings and life in general. The second question is what factors, like gender, social class, or age, are crucial in self- and external perception, and therefore, in the formation of identity. The last investigation concentrates on the special abilities of people with disability, and scrutinizes if the aptitudes serve as compensations for their disabilities. The basis of this paper is Michel Foucault’s theory of mechanisms of societal exclusion, and the construction of categories such as norm and abnormity. Especially his works Wahnsinn und Gesellschaft, Überwachen und Strafen and his lecture course of Die Anormalen are essential in this perspective. In addition, the cultural and social currents in the disability studies serve as fundamental approaches. These two theories help to identify the vague term disability, and consequently, the object of investigation in this paper. In summary, the analysis of Jenseits der Stille and Erbsen auf Halb Sechs shows that the representation of disabled people in German film is predominantly stereotypic. Therein, disablement means great misfortune, and the loss of the central position in discourse. The disabled figures are socially alienated from their non-disabled surroundings. The isolation, however, is brought about by discursive mechanisms such as the power of medicine. In both movies, the disabled and non-disabled people are focused on the disability in their self and external perception. Accordingly, disability is linked to the feeling of shame, a lack of acceptance and the stigmatization of deviants. Self-acceptance can only be accomplished outside of the discourse of the normal, in which disabled are stigmatized. This paper reveals that the representation of people with disability in German film still shows a rather stereotypic image. Therefore, they tend to confirm societal prejudices rather than to challenge them.

Professional qualification of people with disability to insertion in the labour market in Fortaleza

Grayceane Gomes da Silva 16 June 2014 (has links)
The present coursework proposed to comprehend how is occurring the process of insertion of people with disability in the labour market in Fortaleza, such as, which the professional qualification that is offered them. It intended, more specifically, analyze the questions referents the insertion of people with disability in the capitalistâs labour market, how configure the actions of professional qualification before the competenceâs and employability rhetoric, beside of the importance that these people give to the work and the professional qualification. The methodological trajectory to undertake this study consisted of bibliographic and documental research and field research with application of semi structured interview with participants of the Warehouse assistantâs course of a specialized institution in the attendance of people with disability convened to the Labor and Social Development Office of the Cearà State (STDS). The trajectory of the people with disability is marked by social inequality and by the seclusion in institutions that directed to remove them to the collective relationships. In the last twenty years the social movements, have brought conquests, among these the insertion of some policies in the social field. So, from of legislation that obliged the recruitment of people with disability, the companies have to receive these people considered unproductive, add to that, before the competenceâs rhetoric, is necessary ensure professional qualifications spaces for these people. So, the professional education for this group is offered, principally, in institutions of specialized attendance. In Fortaleza the courses are offered by these places, as from of a capitalist logic of to offer a formation in short period. The investigated institution realizes attendance for professional qualification, routing for the labour market and follow-up in the first months in the companies. The interviews were realized with six people, being four men and two women, with hearing loss, mental handicap and blindness. The schooling profile is of late access to the teaching levels, whereat only two concluded the high school, the others were participating of Yong and Adult Education, being that one had gave up to dedicate to the job. The participation in professional courses is related to the possibility of get a job, but two participants cited the choice by course for to consider interesting and a new learning. The meaning of to have a job second the interviewees is related to the idea of be dignifying, in the meaning that become more importants to the society, above can support oneself and to contribute to the support of the relatives. In the that be relative to professional experiences all had, even if for means of stage, above reports of informal jobs, with low salaries and without work rights. As from of the analyses realized in the investigative field we have how conclusion that the job for these people have a centralize for the subsistence guaranty, such as, that the professional qualification whereof participate are seen how possibility of to conquest a space of job, even not being in the area whereof the course the realized. The conclusions of our field investigation, added to the documental analyses and to the literary study pertinent, take us to conclude that although the people with disability find an opportunity of social insertion in the labour force experience, receive specific professional capacitation, still find, how the others people of the worker class, jettisoned of a full social insertion, input the selves structural conditions of de capitalist system and of the form historical of prejudice and discrimination that these people suffered along the time.

Tereza Liduina GrigÃrio Fernandes 23 April 2010 (has links)
The present study aimed to investigate, in documents from Brazilian Ministry of Education, guidelines regarding the learning evaluation of students with disability registered in Regular Education. Specifically, aimed to identify the conception of learning evaluation officially recommended for those students as well as recognize the evaluation strategies according to a proposal of Inclusive Education. Historically, a gradual evolution is verified from exclusion and segregation to the socioeducacional inclusion of people with disability. After political, social and educational pressures, countless legal measures were elaborated, national and internationally, to assure the fundamental right to education for those people. The Education constitutes an indispensable way to combat inequality and to promote the social and education inclusion of people with disability. For students with disability, the learning evaluation presents complex characteristics, because of their specificities. The inexistence of an appropriate evaluation collaborates to validate prejudices against that population. The main purpose of the learning evaluation should consist of analyzing the potentialities of development and learning of the students with disability, thinking about the necessary education resources in benefit of their learning. In that sense, it was proceeded a research of documental nature, and the object of study was constituted by documents of national expression in the area of Inclusive Education, with circulation among teachers and searchers of the subject. Therefore, publications of the Collection Saberes e PrÃticas da InclusÃo and InclusÃo: Revista da EducaÃÃo Especial, organized for the General Office of Special Education with support of Brazilian Ministry of Education, from 2005 to 2008, were analyzed. The content analysis accomplished identified the following themes: i) models of learning evaluation; ii) objectives of learning evaluation; iii) planning of the evaluation; iv) evaluation instruments. The investigated official documents present a general proposal about evaluation strategies for Inclusive Education, although they emphasize actions for deaf people and people with intellectual disability. They consider the formative evaluation the most appropriate model for the learning evaluation of people with disability in Inclusive Education.

E mostram ainda que o acesso a esse tipo de atividade resulta em aspectos significativamente positivos para a vida e para a qualidade de vida das pessoas com deficiência / Abstract: Nowadays it is common people seek for leisure activities in touch with nature and in the adventure form. More recently, however, it was verified an increasing search for this kind of leisure among people with disability. This scenario constitutes a new fact. Moreover, this fact reveals in the relation among leisure interfaces, the adventure activities and the quality of life. Front to this scenario, this research objectifies to comprehend the accessibility meaning to the adventure activities in nature for people's life with disability and consequently, for the quality of life of these. This objective is also to identify the meaning of the accessibility for the life of these people, as well as the leisure access meaning as a whole. For its amplitude, this research characterizes a sociological approach, considering especially the need to comprehend the dynamics in which things happen. The adopted methodological procedure is the qualitative analysis, because the relation between leisure practices and the feelings that they yield, as well as the relation between such feelings and the quality of life, the study focus, hardly is quantifiable, once it involves several meanings, reasons, aspirations, beliefs, values and attitudes that are sustained in subjectivity. The adopted delineation is the exploratory research, because this study aims larger familiarity with the presented problem. The conceptual and operational model is the cross-fertilization between theoretical reasoning and the empiric reality. For such procedure were performed observations and interviews. From the observations it objectified to verify the efficiency of adapted equipment and practitioners' feelings. From the interviews, it objectified, from the managers, to comprehend the development process of this adaptation and the goals of the same. And from people with disability, it objectified to improve the understanding about the search reason for such activities and the meaning of this practice for these people. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed. The location pre-established for the field research is the city of Socorro, in the state of São Paulo. The location choice is due the fact of this municipal district proposed take part of a project destined to the forms and equipment development adapted for the adventure activities practice for people with disability. The analysis valued the data set, in an integrated perspective, seeking to explore the phenomenon in the context in which it occurs and which it is included. The data show that the municipal district obtained a very significant growth from its involvement and investment in adapted adventures activities. The data also show that it is elevated the number of people with disability that seek for these leisure activities. And show also that the access to that kind of activity results in significantly positive aspects for the life and quality of life of people with disability / Doutorado / Atividade Fisica Adaptada / Doutor em Educação Física

Health professionals' perceptions of rehabilitation care workers

Gamiet, Shamila January 2015 (has links)
Magister Scientiae (Physiotherapy) - MSc(Physio) / People with disabilities (PWD) often come from disadvantaged communities and struggle to access health and rehabilitation, education and employment. This leads to poorer health outcomes, lower education achievements, and higher rate of unemployment in comparison to people without disabilities. Therefore there is a need to empower PWD to remove all barriers which prevent them from participating in all aspects of their communities. In South Africa, 5% of the population is disabled and in a worldwide review conducted on access to rehabilitation services, it was reported that South Africa provided 21% to 40% of the disabled population with rehabilitation services. In 2012 the Department of Health (DOH) trained a new cadre of community health worker (CHW) in the field of rehabilitation in order to improve PWDs‘ access to health services. As a result, health professionals in the Western Cape became concerned about the role of this new cadre of rehabilitation care worker in PHC and CBS. The aim of this study was therefore to explore health professionals‘ perceptions of the newly trained rehabilitation care workers (RCWs). Q methodology was selected as an appropriate research design to meet the objectives of this study as it can be used to analyse opinions, perceptions and attitudes. The study population consisted of all the health professionals who engaged with the RCWs in the clinical workplace during their clinical practice module. A convenient sample of sixteen health professionals participated in this study. Ethics approval was obtained to conduct this study and all participants gave written consent to participate in this study. The researcher gathered all the viewpoints of the health professionals regarding the new rehabilitation care workers (RCWs) by conducting focus group discussions and document analysis. Statements were then drawn up based on the health professionals' viewpoints. The participants then ranked these statements from strongly agree to strongly disagree on a Q data score grid, in a process called Q sorting. The completed Q data score grids, called Q sorts, were then entered into PQMethod software programme for statistical and factor analysis. From the results of this Q analysis, two factors emerged which were analysed and interpreted. A factor is representative of participants with similar opinions. The participants loading onto Factor one and Factor two shared similar opinions of the RCWs. The results indicated that the participants were of the opinion that RCWs‘ role would be to strengthen primary health care (PHC) and community-based rehabilitation (CBR) and promote the participation of PWD in society. The results suggested that the RCWs were capable of improving the quality of life of PWD by empowering PWD to become actively involved in all aspects of community life. The participants felt that the RCWs would be included in the health system by working at intermediate care centres (facility-based) and in the community (home-based). However, the participants agreed that the RCWs must work under the direct supervision of qualified health professionals. Participants loading onto Factor one and Factor two further agreed that RCWs worked well in the structured environment of intermediate care health facilities. They felt that it would be beneficial for RCWs to be employed at these health facilities as the RCWs reduced the workload of the health professionals. From the results, it was also found that health professionals were of the opinion that the RCWs displayed positive attitudes and good professional behaviour in the clinical environment. Health professionals however identified gaps in the knowledge of the RCWs and a lack of skills to perform certain tasks. However, health professionals agreed that the RCWs' skills will develop and improve with time and exposure. This study showed that health professionals had positive perceptions of the RCWs and this could indicate that RCWs will be well accepted by health professionals as part of the PHC team. This could lead to the effective utilisation of RCWs in community-based rehabilitation. Recommendations can be made to the developers and implementers of the RCW training curriculum to make adjustments to the curriculum so as to address the lack of knowledge and skills in certain aspects of health and disability. It can further be recommended that South Africa's National DOH capitalise on these positive perceptions and train more RCWs to extend rehabilitation and health services to more underserved communities. This will assist the South African Government in ensuring that more PWD receive rehabilitation and become included in all aspects of their communities as is envisaged in the 2020/2030 health plan.

God man i fickan : Involving people with cognitive impairments in participatory design activities

Nordh, Alexander January 2020 (has links)
Background: Technology can provide efficient and accessible solutions to manage private economy, taking into account user needs and experiences. People with disability are most likely to encounter challenges related to financial literacy and lack of access to their own money. The project God man i fickan in Sweden aims to develop an accessible application that supports people with difficulties handling their private economy. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate basic functions and interactions in a digital tool used by people who cannot manage their own economy without some kind of assistance. Method: Participatory design activities involving people with cognitive impairments were utilized. The qualitative data collection included discussions, storyboarding and an online design session. Due to Covid- 19 we had to modify one workshop for online environments. The collected data was analyzed with a content theme analysis which then was visualized and refined iteratively through wireframes and a lo-fi prototype. Results: The study revealed a number of user values, reflecting user needs, and a number of key features that should be supported by the application. A heuristic evaluation of the lo-fi prototype showed that using a provocative object engaged the participants in critical reflections and discussions. Discussion: By involving people with cognitive impairments in the design process through participatory design activities, the methodology used in this study allowed them to influence the design and application functionalities.
