Transgressing the borders of gallery space : subversive practices of alternative art galleries in East Germany and Poland of the 1970sJarzebska, Aneta January 2018 (has links)
This thesis constitutes the first comparative study of the phenomenon of alternative art galleries functioning during the 1970s in two neighbouring state socialist regimes, namely, the German Democratic Republic and the People's Republic of Poland. Firmly contextualised in the cultural-political climate of Honecker's and Gierek's quasi-liberalisation, it examines the socio-cultural function of non-conformist exhibition spaces and focuses, specifically, on two case studies: Galerie Arkade in East Berlin and Galeria/Repassage in Warsaw. By looking at a wide variety of practices produced in those spaces, this thesis investigates the commonalities and differences in how the galleries operated and how they related to the divergent post-Stalinist conditions. For instance, due to more repressive cultural-politics in the GDR, it proved more difficult to accommodate experimental practices in Arkade, since even exhibiting abstract art was problematic for the East German officials. Conversely, in Poland Gierek's liberalisation resulted in the state's limited acceptance of radical artistic practices such as performance and conceptual art but only in the marginal spaces of artist-run galleries. Despite their alternative status, the galleries were, to a certain degree, dependent administratively and financially on these socialist institutions and were at the same time exposed to surveillance by the state security services. These aspects of galleries' activities are often neglected and so to remedy this lack this thesis offers new perspectives on and insights into various aspects of the functioning of alternative culture in this region. The originality of this research lies also in its references to new archival material which has not been published, nor interpreted before. The interpretation of these rich primary sources makes use of a new theoretical framework that combines Michel Foucault's theory of heterotopia in a macro-level analysis and Henri Lefebvre's ideas on the social production of space in a micro-level analysis. In particular, the galleries' histories are seen in this thesis as intertwined with the advancing process of disintegration of state socialism in the Eastern Bloc as this was perceptible to varying degree in different socialist states. Accordingly, it argues that the galleries were symptomatic of and, simultaneously, contributed through various practices to the 'post-socialist condition'.

Desse modo,
This work falls within the field of performing arts, leaning over the actor's work by
analyzing Action Scores, considered here as a device for creation and composition. The
research describes and analyzes a process in which the researcher is insertedas an actress.
Therefore, it is not a distanced and unbiased one, but still maintains the necessary academic
rigour for their production. To this end, we conducted a case study, using the play
Dorotéia, by the Panacéia Delirante group, under the direction of Hebe Alves, a work that
has, as one of its pillars, the scenic performance of the actresses through this device. Two
analysis units were used in order to demonstrate how the Score device works regarding the
performance of the actresses in the show: the Corporality evidenced in the show, and the
Game State established between the actresses on scene. In addition, we analyzed the play’s
photo and video recordings, as well as testimonies given by the cast of Dorotéia. By
combining this material with the research’s conceptual aspects, we intended to answer the
questions: How do the game and corporality serve to structure the Score as a device? and
How are these two elements articulated in the composition of the actresses’ performance?.
The objective of the research was to analyze the performance under the scope of the device –
with its lines of powerand curves of visibility, as presented by Michel Foucault and
developed by Gilles Deleuze. This effort is so far justified as a non-Cartesian, rhizomatic
understanding – that therefore escapes the rigidity of pre-established concepts. Such is an
important tool for understanding the artist's (in this case, the scenic artist’s) praxis. Thus, it
becomes possible to open new interpretations to include the aspects of risk, improvisation,
tension, pleasure, interactivity, imagination and subjectivity without falling into
formulations solely based on common sense or supported by a concept of an Action Score
understood as purely instrumental. Among the achieved results, the understanding of
corporality and the game state as visibility curves and power lines of the device stand out.
They are responsible for possibilitating the action of the processes of functional overdetermination
and strategic filling that occur in the Action Score. Another conclusion that
can be taken from this case study is the understanding that, through the optical device, the
Action Score can be discussed in a more rigorous and systematized method regarding the
scenic artist’s performance.

Abstract: In favor of crave jubilance at the numb hearts: poetical construction of a perception This paper presents the testimony of a trajectory of life, whose experiences, research, equity and propositions in the field of arts, especially theater, gained new look and conduct from contact with the indigenous culture and oriental arts and philosophy. The research was initiated from concerns in the field of identity, militancy and consciousness. The methodology is set in their own way and was guided by the masters intuition and communion, the Muses of been as an actor. The walked paths were presented, from childhood until the first shows, the trend to merge art and life. Until that, with the immersion in the indigenous and east worlds, the look and conduct of the researcher had been redirected, coming from the theatricalization to the propositions and integrated and participatory arts, including as primary axis of practice and proposal to search by state of presence and generosity while emanation. The text, in the manner of testimony, presents, beyond the thought, the comparison with theory, poems, records of time and stories, illustrated with photos and drawings. The journey of making this thesis realized the discovery of a new plan: the processing and organization of this experience as a major rite of passage, as experiences being offered as knowledge, while pointing to the Theatre as form of knowledge. The trip was sponsored by the intense need to expand levels of knowledge and awareness, the deep desire to act with greater clarity among the human species, toward the full moment and the living presence, until to oblivion terms like past and future. / Doutorado / Doutor em Artes

A pulsão performativa de Jaceguai: aproximações e distanciamentos entre o campo artístico da performance e a prática cênica do Teat(r)o Oficina nos espetáculos Macumba Antropófaga e Acordes / The performative pulse of Jaceguai: similarities and differences between the artistic field of performance with the stagecraft of Teat(r)o Oficina on the productions of Macumba Antropófaga and AcordesBiagio Pecorelli Filho 28 November 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to articulate the artistic field of performance with the stagecraft of one of the most important and long-lived theater groups in Brazil: Teat(r)o Oficina, from São Paulo, directed by José Celso Martinez Corrêa. Analysing the theater group history in order to obtain its origins, I intend to show traces of a performative pulse, which is perceived since Oficina has performed Roda Viva, written by Chico Buarque de Hollanda, in 1968. In 2012, I joined Oficina cast for two plays: Macumba Antropófaga - uma devoração do Manifesto Antropófago, by Oswald de Andrade, and Acordes, adaptation of Bertolt Brecht\'s text and Paul Hindemith\'s music, both directed by José Celso. This experience as an actor of Oficina constitutes an essential aspect of methodology of this study, which is also based on extensive archeology of newspaper articles, interviews, manifestos, documents, photography and videography records (some of them are unpublished) and theoretic texts on group activity from 1968 to 2012. The following study is divided into two parts. In the first one, I conduct a research on clarifying theory notions of \"performance\" and \"performative\" in contemporary scene, taking the \"real body\" (Fischer-Lichte) as one of the main concept instruments. Afterwards, I continue to study on the history of Oficina, recognizing similarities and differences between its stagecraft and the legacy of researchers such as Marvin Carlson, Richard Schechner, RoseLee Goldberg, Renato Cohen, Hans-Thies Lehmann, Óscar Cornago and, mainly, Erika Fischer-Lichte. The second part of this study consists in analyzing the performative pulse on the production of Macumba Antropófaga, as well as on the process of production of Acordes. In conclusion, this research considers that this reinterpretation on the history of Oficina, based on performance, in addition to contributing to the reflections upon theater and performance in contemporary scene, also makes a correction to the history of Oficina when the performance pulse aspect is considered, whereas significant part of Brazilian Theater Criticism, in 1960\'s and 1970\'s, reviewed it as an aggressive and unreasonable kind of theatre

雲端多租戶互動展演平台的設計與實作 / Design and Implementation of a Multi-tenant Cloud Platform for Cyber-Physical Interactive Performance Art王佑霖, Wang, You Lin Unknown Date (has links)
In traditional performance art, viewers and performers are regarded as two independent individuals. There is less interaction between performers and performers, performers and audiences. If wearable devices are used in the "cyber-physical interactive digital performance art", it can help create an interactive atmosphere in the scene. It is a creative, innovative mode of performance, and it also creates a combination between scenario and the interaction of the audiences. The interactive atmosphere is easier for the audience to be affected than ordinary information transmission.
Currently, many special effects are presented by the technical staff. They are based on the performers and progression of show. If the special effects are managed by the performer-selves, they need to understand the relative technologies. In addition, they have to cooperate and communicate with technical staff. However, the difference of concept and background between each other, it's hard to avoid the mistake, delay, or misunderstanding of control. It may cause that the poor performance bring audience about the bad auditory and visual feeling. According to above issues, this study will design and implement a multi-tenant cloud platform for cyber-physical interactive performance art. The performers just connect to the performance art system website via the Internet, with the wearable device, and they do not need to set up and manage system platform by themselves. They log in the website, with the GUI editor, and use mouse to control demand. Without complex technical training, the variety of special effects are presented which based on the wearable device’s signal. We suppose that the platform makes the performers operate special effects system by themselves simply and easily. It also reduces the misunderstanding with the technical staff.

Requiem for Netted Fish: An Intermedia Composition for Choir, Harp, and DanceHill, Jeanne E. (Jeanne Elizabeth) 12 1900 (has links)
Requiem for Netted Fish is an intermedia composition for sixteen-voice SATB choir, harp, six dancers, slide projections, and lighting. The text, taken from the poetry of Anna Akhmatova and Carolyn Forche, presents a universal, womanly rage against human repression and destruction. The poetry finds aural interpretation in sound, and visual interpretation in movement and lighting. Poetic inspiration contributes to the integration of elements in the work, as does the impulse-exchange method of coordinating mediums, which allows the dancers control of the timing of events. The resultant interdependent relationships necessary for performance contribute to the integration of the composition. The duration of this intermedia work is approximately fifteen minutes.

Compositional approaches within new media paradigmsOliveiro, Mark, 1983- 05 1900 (has links)
"Compositional Approaches to New Media Paradigms" is the discursive accompaniment to the original composition BoMoH, (a new media chamber opera. A variety of new media concepts and practices are discussed in relation to their use as a contemporary compositional methodology for computer musicians and digital content producers. This paper aligns relevant discourse with a variety of concepts as they influence and affect the compositional process. This paper does not propose a new working method; rather it draws attention to a contemporary interdisciplinary practice that facilitates new possibilities for engagement and aesthetics in digital art/music. Finally, in demonstrating a selection of the design principals, from a variety of new media theories of interest, in compositional structure and concept, it is my hope to provide composers and computer musicians with a tested resource that will function as a helpful set of working guidelines for producing new media enabled art, sonic or otherwise.
