Exploring the dawn of the universe with the Sino-French SVOM mission / Explorer l'aube de l'univers avec la mission franco-chinoise SVOM

Corre, David 30 November 2018 (has links)
This thesis lies within the framework of the sino-french SVOM (Space Variable Object Monitor) mission to be launched in 2021 whose objective is the detection and characterisation of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). The first part consists in the development of an end-to-end software for COLIBRI (Catching OpticaL and Infrared BRight transIents), a SVOM ground follow-up telescope. It consists in a GRB simulator, an Exposure Time Calculator, an image simulator and a photometric redshift algorithm. It allowed to estimate the telescope scientific performances to ensure that the optical design was fulfilling the scientific requirements. The relative accuracy on the photometric redshift delivered by COLIBRI is estimated to be about 10% and 15% for GRBs at 3.5 < z < 8 et z > 8. The second part of the thesis deals mainly with the study of dust properties in GRB host galaxies, but also with the star formation activity in these galaxies. We compare extinction curves measured along the GRB line of sight for 7 GRBs to the attenuation curve of their host galaxies measured with CIGALE, a SED fitting code. By comparing these curves to the results of a radiative transfer code, we obtain information about the geometrical distribution of dust and stars in these galaxies. On a larger sample of 23 galaxies, we show that the steepest (flattest) attenuation curves are associated to galaxies with a large (small) amount of dust attenuation, less (more) active in star formation and less (more) massive galaxies

Ecoconception des ciments : synthèse, hydratation et durabilité / Eco design of cements : synthesis, hydration and durability

Kleib, Joelle 06 December 2018 (has links)
Sulfoaluminate cements are hydraulic binders that, until today, are not standardized and therefore do not have a fixed composition. The content of ye'elimite - the main compound of this cement - can vary from 5 to 70 %. However, the composition of sulfoaluminate cement (clinker composition as well as the percentage of added gypsum) is a critical parameter that controls its reactivity, mechanical performance, as well as its durability. The main objective of this thesis is to study the influence of sulfoaluminate cements composition on their technical properties, such as mechanical performances and durability. Three main axes were discussed in this work. First, the influence of the sulfoaluminate cement composition (25-75 wt. % of ye'elimite) on its hydraulic and mechanical properties, as well as on the threshold limit of Zn, was studied. For this purpose three sulfoaluminate cements (25, 50 and 75 wt. % of ye'elimite) were synthesized. Then the effect of the variability of this cement on its durability in pure and sulphated water was investigated compared to a commercial sulfoaluminate cement. Finally, a study of the potentialities of commercial sulfoaluminate cement to inhibit the alkali silica reaction in mortars, when using a reactive aggregate (flint), was conducted. This study reveals that an increase in ye'elimite content in the sulfoaluminate cement increases the mechanical performance. The threshold limit of Zn is 0.3 % independently of the sulfoaluminate cement composition. Contrariwise, the sulfoaluminate cement composition influences the durability of these cements. Although the formulation containing 75 % of ye’elimite gives the best mechanical performances, its durability was lowest due to the absence of stratlingite in its cement matrix. Finally, the use of sulfoaluminate cement has good potential towards the inhibition of the alkali silica reaction.

[pt] ACHO QUE ISSO FOI BASTANTE MACHO PRA ELA: REFORÇO E SUBVERSÃO DE IDEOLOGIAS HETERONORMATIVAS EM PERFORMANCES NARRATIVAS DIGITAIS DE PRATICANTES DE PEGGING / [en] GUESS THAT WAS MACHO ENOUGH FOR HER: REINFORCEMENT AND SUBVERSION OF HETERONORMATIVE IDEOLOGIES IN PEGGING PRACTITIONERS DIGITAL NARRATIVE PERFORMANCES

ELIZABETH SARA LEWIS 11 November 2016 (has links)
[en] The present study examines imbrications between performativity and ideology with regards to the (re)production of heteronormative discourses regarding gender and sexualities and to ways of destabilizing, resignifying and subverting such limiting discourses. Our research is guided by a queer position that sees gender and sexuality as identity performances and not natural facts (BUTLER, [1990] 2003, [1993] 2002) and a linguistic perspective that considers narratives to be a way of intervening in the social world in order to change (or reiterate) normalizing and stigmatizing ideological discourses (MOITA LOPES, 2008; THREADGOLD, 2005). It focuses on gender and sexuality identity performances in digital narratives of practitioners of pegging, a sexual practice in which a woman uses a strap-on dildo to penetrate the anus of a man (who identifies as heterosexual). Pegging is frequently the target of discrimination due to the ideological association between men s anal pleasure and homosexuality (SÁEZ e CARRASCOSA, 2011) and that idea that it is a deviant practice related to BDSM (another set of stigmatized practices) and, therefore, supposedly not intimate. In the narratives and interactions that were analyzed, stemming from virtual ethnography (HINE, 2000, 2005) in the online community Pegging 101, three principal topics emerged: (1) the users difficulties in creating a clear separation between what counts as sensual pegging or BDSM, (2) different views of the relationship between pegging and intimacy, including intimacy being created through revealing things about oneself or by practicing role reversal and (3) problems in dealing with the ideological association between male anal pleasure and homosexuality. Although pegging has the potential to be a subversive practice that could contribute to changing heteronormative conceptions of gender and sexuality, in their narratives, most of the community s users tried to resignify pegging as a normal practice, fitting it into ideological heteronormative discourses about romantic love and intimacy and reinforcing the gender binary and hegemonic masculinity. During the resignification process, the community s users usually reiterated certain heteronormative ideological discourses in their attempts to subvert others, in particular, by performing masculinities that valued courage or aggression as a way of proving they re not homosexual, or by reinforcing negative stereotypes about BDSM in their attempt to prove that pegging can be intimate. As such, by studying how heteronormative ideological discourses are performatively (re)produced at the same time as certain destabilizations emerge, this study contributes to understanding how to foster a narrative politics with more discourses that are transgressive and fewer ones that reinforce heteronormativity, creating more ruptures and visibilizing possibilities for alternative discourses about gender and sexuality.

[pt] DE LAGARTA A BORBOLETA: PROTAGONISMO DE MULHERES COM CÂNCER DE MAMA EM REDES SOCIAIS / [en] FROM CATERPILLAR TO BUTTERFLY: PROTAGONISM OF WOMEN WITH BREAST CANCER IN SOCIAL NETWORKS

RENATA MARTINS AMARAL 14 August 2018 (has links)
[en] The present thesis analyzes, from a multi-sited perspective, the identity performances of Vitória and Glória, women in treatment of breast cancer who, through their online interactions, construct themselves as victims when they discover the disease and begin to act as protagonists in social networks in the fight against cancer. Thus, the objectives of this study are: (i) to analyze the identity performances of two women with breast cancer in different websites; and (ii) to understand how the participants construct themselves as protagonists in social networks throughout the treatment of the disease. The theoretical perspective of the research is located in studies on the identity performances in narrative and multimodal discourse, in the discursive and social protagonism and in the theory of the positioning. The methodology of the research is qualitative and interpretative of a netnographic nature. The data consist of videos, interviews and narratives of the participants that are registered in public pages of Facebook, YouTube, three institutional websites and one blog. The analysis indicate that: (i) there are changes in identity performances and in the positioning of participants in social networks, signaling the transformation of life trajectories throughout their treatments - from being ordinary to protagonism; (ii) participants reassign their experiences of pain and lamentation, from a discourse perspective as social action through discourses of emotion, hope, triumph and political engagement; (iii) agency is directed to interlocutors in social networks, as a political and identity positioning for coping with cancer. In this sense, as a social contribution, this thesis indicates that, in contemporary society, social networks become fertile spaces of resistance and personal/users empowerment, and spaces of metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly in relation to cancer.

Analysis of a recital: a report on four saxophone works by Paul-Agricole Génin, Fernande Decruck, Ida Gotkovsky, and Luciano Berio inspired by four important saxophone figures: Adolphe Sax, Marcel Mule, Daniel Deffayet, and Claude Delangle.

Gugel, Christopher January 1900 (has links)
Master of Music / Department of Music / Anna Marie Wytko / In 1838, Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax created the saxophone. The saxophone was officially patented on June 24, 1846. Sax became the first Professor of Saxophone at the Conservatoire de Paris. This conservatoire has been and continues to be a historically important school of music in Europe. There have been four saxophone professors at the Conservatoire National Supèrieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris since the instrument’s creation. These professors include: Adolphe Sax (1814-1894), Marcel Mule (1901-2001), Daniel Deffayet (1922-2002), and Claude Delangle (born 1957). Each instructor has championed the saxophone to new heights by refining pedagogical approaches and by advocating for the creation of new saxophone compositions. The music examined in this document represents pieces composed for each of the four saxophone professors who have taught at the Conservatoire de Paris. Paul-Agricole Génin’s composition Variations sur un thème espagnol: pour saxophone alto et piano was inspired by Adolphe Sax, Fernande Decruck composed Sonata in C-Sharp for Alto Saxophone and Piano (1943) for Marcel Mule, Ida Gotkovsky wrote Variations pathétiques: pour Saxophone Alto et Piano (1980) for Daniel Deffayet, and Sequenza IX for Alto Saxophone (1980) by Luciano Berio was dedicated to Claude Delangle. All of these pieces demonstrate how composers continually strive to expand the boundaries of the skilled saxophonists’ musical style, technical facility, and overall flexibility on the saxophone. This master’s report, presented as extended program notes, includes biographical information about the composers, a historical and stylistic overview of the selected compositions, and a harmonic and formal analysis of the music with respect to performance considerations.

A balanced orchestra program: analyses and rehearsal techniques for Haydn, Berlioz, Ravel, Bryce Craig, and Casey Cangelosi

Duffy, Paul January 1900 (has links)
Master of Music, Theater, and Dance / Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance. / David Littrell / This report provides detailed analyses of several orchestral works. Current orchestras have striven to rejuvenate their programs by balancing canonical literature with newer or less familiar works; such a practice has become especially important in an age when audiences are dwindling and orchestras are disbanding. The works included in this report follow that balanced blueprint, including staples such as Haydn’s Symphony No. 103 in E-flat Major (the “Drumroll”) and Berlioz’s “Hungarian March” from The Damnation of Faust to new orchestrations of 20th century works, such as Bryce Craig’s arrangement of the toccata from Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin, as well as works composed within the last six years, such as Casey Cangelosi’s Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra No. 2. Each work’s formal design is straightforward, and the technical skills required are not virtuosic. The chapters below explore each work from a historical, theoretical, and performance perspective.

Serre, Kévin January 2015 (has links)
