Investigating the Efficacy of a Lovingkindness Meditation Intervention for Patients Undergoing Breast Cancer Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study

Wren, Ana Vanessa Adams January 2015 (has links)

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in the United States. Despite more women undergoing treatment and increased survival rates, many women continue to suffer from emotional distress and physical symptoms associated with treatments for breast cancer (e.g., surgery). To date, there has been limited research investigating the efficacy of psychosocial interventions for breast cancer patients during the surgical time frame. This randomized controlled pilot study examined the effect of a lovingkindness meditation intervention on key psychological and physical outcomes surrounding breast surgery. Sixty women undergoing surgery were randomly assigned to one of three treatment conditions at breast biopsy: 1) lovingkindness meditation, 2) music, 3) standard care. Assessments of emotional distress, physical symptoms, and positive psychosocial resources occurred prior to patients' biopsy, following their biopsy, one week after receipt of their biopsy results, and one week following breast surgery. Multilevel model analyses demonstrated that lovingkindness meditation significantly improved anxiety, pain, self-compassion, emotional suppression, mindfulness, social isolation, and heart rate levels over time compared to control conditions. These results support the efficacy of a brief lovingkindness meditation intervention for breast cancer patients during the surgical time frame. The implications of these findings on future research, theory, and policy are discussed.
/ Dissertation

Are gingivitis, periodontitis and peri- implantitis associated with autoantibodies- A litterature review

Svensson, Fabio, Seifaldin, Ziad January 2018 (has links)
Introduction: Periodontal disease is one of the most common inflammatory diseases in the world. A possible autoimmune aspect behind the local tissue destruction in periodontal disease, as a result of the invasion of oral pathogens over time has been reported in previous studies, but the correlation is yet unclear. Purpose: The aim of this literature review was to shed light on the topic if autoantibodies and autoimmune reactions are associated with gingivitis, periodontitis or peri-implantitis and the progression of these inflammatory diseases. Material and methods: A search in the Pubmed database was done resulting in 138 hits. To follow a systematic approach for selecting the studies to include, we used predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria Results: 26 articles studying a broad variety of different autoantibodies was included for this literature review. A vast majority of the included studies were of case-control design and, because of the broad variety and different variables and data, we decided that a meta-analysis could not be performed. Conclusion: Many studies where results could be compared due to similar comparisons, regarding the incidence of periodontal disease and the prevalence of certain autoantibodies, showed opposite results which makes it hard to reach a conclusion. The main part of the included studies were of small size and therefore more comparable studies are needed to clarify the possible association between periodontal disease and an autoimmune reaction mediated by autoantibodies.

Abstract : The objective of this work was to evaluate both origin and diagenesis of organic matter of Peri Lake bottom sediments. Thus, two cores were collected with P.V.C. tubes of 25 mm of diameter and 1 m in length. These cores were sectioned at every 3 cm interval along the first 15 cm, and at every 5 cm interval from 15 cm to the end of each core. Then, lipids, soluble proteins, phaeopigments, C, N, and H present in these intervais were analysed. In order to better understand the obtained results, some ratios were used, such as: C/N, H/C, ratios between the concentrations of terrigenous and aquatic carboxylic acids (RTA), and Carbon Preference Indexes (CPI). The results of these ratios showed that from the sediment-water interface to about 45 cm in depth, the organic matter origin remains practically unaffected, being mainly aquatic (C/N£10 and RTA < 1). Below 45 cm, the organic matter amount is lower, having both aquatic and terrigenous origins (C/N > 10 and RTA > 1). Moreover, Peri Lake bottom sediment can be classified as gyttza that is an organic sediment. Several biomarkers were identified, as those of terrigenous plants (fatty acids C >22) and those of microbial action (acids C15 iso and anteiso, and hydroxy acids). As in many other sediments cited in previous works, the Peri Lake sediments showed a predominance of fatty acids with an even number of carbon, and a bimodal distribution with two maxima between C14 and C18, and C24 and C28. Regarding long chain fatty acids, in spite of an alteration in its concentration with depth, there is not any significant change in distribution among them since there is no changing at CPI values (about 5,5). The phaeopigment concentration ranges from 12 mg/g to 178 mg/g, whereas the soluble protein concentration ranges from 1 mg/g to 18 mg/g. Another important point is the difference of lipids concentration that exists between the two cores, which may be caused by the difference of grain size between the two sites where the sediment cores were collected.

Efficacy of detoxifying treatment on dental implant surfaces affected by peri-implantitis

Qari, Maha Rahmatullah 25 October 2017 (has links)
BACKGROUND: Implant therapy has been the gold standard in the past decade when it comes to replacing partially or complete edentulous oral cavities. Patients favor this line of treatment since it does mimic their natural teeth in esthetic, function and phonetics. Unfortunately, some initially integrated implants end up diagnosed with peri-implantitis, which threatens the longevity of those implants in their respective alveolar bone. Several methods have been discussed aiming to either salvage the diseased implant or prolong the life of it in patients’ oral cavities. In this protocol we studied the efficacy of one of the suggested protocols that has been used frequently in periodontal practices aiming to decontaminate the surface of previously diseased implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study looked at the efficacy through two analyses, a descriptive and a quantitative. In the descriptive, several peri-implantitis diagnosed implants were collected and distributed over 4 groups: Test, Negative Control, Positive control and compared to pristine implants. Osteoprogenitor cells were prepared in-vitro and seeded over these implants after applying the protocol on Test group only. The quantitative analysis used the EDX analysis to study the percentages of Titanium and Oxygen on contaminated implants before and after applying the protocol on. Deposits removal was tested as well to ensure efficacy of decontamination protocol. RESULTS: Descriptive analysis showed that osteoprogenitor cells had higher attachment and proliferation on implants that followed the decontamination protocol vs. other groups. Quantitative analysis showed statistically significant higher titanium percentages after decontamination. Oxygen levels were higher as well but not statistically significant. Deposits were statistically significant in removal after decontamination protocol. CONCLUSION: Decontamination of previously diseased implants following the mentioned protocol has efficiently increased the chances of re-establishment of osseointegration in previously contaminated implants.

Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro Tecnológico. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia de Produção. / Made available in DSpace on 2012-10-19T10:11:14Z (GMT).

Österholm, Emil January 2018 (has links)
This study aimed to examine what role and how the agriculture will be affected in a periurban environment as by the comprehensive plan that the municipal has established for the Röbäck area. The study tried to value the importance and role for the agriculture today and in the future. The methods of this study were interviews with farmers, inhabitants and workers of Röbäck, businesses and a sports club based on two types of interviews one survey-based with fixed questions and one in-depth interview with farmers. The municipal comprehensive plan and accompanying environmental impact assessment along relevant literature and the statistical database from Jordbruksverket were used to extract and compile data. The results show that the fields in and surrounding Röbäck contained good agricultural values and the ability to maintain of self-sufficiency in Västerbottens county is low. In the interviews with farmers the fear of not being able to use the farmland as before as a result of complaints on dust, noises, smells and rules on spreading fertilizers and pesticides raised a concern. The interviews showed that people living in Röbäck liked the combination of being close to Umeå city centrum as well as living close to the nature and the open landscapes, but few saw the link between the agriculture in Röbäck and these. The report concludes that the issue is complex and depends on whose interest should go first. There were both positive and negative outcomes of the plan in all the three pillars of sustainability

Arginine is a nutritionally essential amino acid, important for pregnancy in mammalian, to increase the survival, growth and development of embryos, fetuses and neonates. Arginine can be used in the synthesis of polyamines by a classical metabolic pathway, though recent studies revealed an important alternative pathway, however, both have been poorly investigated. In this context, studies are necessary in order to identify an occurrence of arginine metabolic pathways in the reproductive tissues during a pregnancy in ewes. The present study had as objectives: a) evaluate the gene expression in the metabolic pathways of arginine, in concepts during the pre-implantation period of pregnancy in ewes; b) to identify the localization of proteins, from the metabolic pathways of arginine, in concepts and uterine endometrium during the pre-implantation period of pregnancy in ewes; and c) to identify the localization of proteins, from the metabolic pathway of arginine, in placentomes during the pre-implantation period of pregnancy in ewes. Rambouillet ewes (n=72) were synchronized and after estrus detection by vasectomized males, ewes were mated by Suffolk males with proven fertility. In experiment 1, ewes (n=20) were hysterectomized at days 13, 14, 15 or 16 of pregnancy, and the sections of concepts collected were frozen in liquid nitrogen in order to study gene expression. In the experiment 2, ewes (n=28) were also hysterectomized at days 13, 14, 15 or 16 of pregnancy, sections of conceptuses and uterine endometrium were fixed in order to identify the protein localization by immunohistochemical analysis. In experiment 3, ewes (n=24) were hysterectomized on days 40, 60, 80, 100, 120 or 140 days of pregnancy, placentomes were collected and fixed for immunohistochemical analysis. Data analysis of gene expression was analyzed using GLM procedure of SAS and differences in the intensity of the immunostaining were evaluated using software R, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed. Significance level was declared < 0.05. The expression of ADC and AGMAT genes (alternative pathway) did not alter across days of pregnancy, and the same happened with ARG1 gene (classic pathway). The ODC1 gene (classic pathway) showed greater expression at 13 days of pregnancy (P=0.06). The immunohistochemical analysis identified ARG1, ODC1, ADC and AGMAT proteins in all tissues and days of pregnancy studied, evidencing the relevance of both pathways during pregnancy. The identification of proteins on lumen epithelia from endometrium improved (p=0.038) after Day 13 of pregnancy and it was significantly greater on Day 16, suggesting that these proteins are required in higher concentrations for conceptuses elongation and implantation. On glandular epithelia, the proteins identification did not change (p=0.64) across days of pregnancy. No difference was observed (p=0.472) between the proteins identification on trofectoderm across days. On placentomes, the proteins identification was lower (p<0.01) on Day 40 of pregnancy compared with Days 60, 120 and 140. The results of the experiment indicate that relevance of both metabolic pathways of arginine to polyamines production during the pregnancy period in ewes.
