Unexpected death of a child : a constructivist approachSlom, R. L. (Roxane Lecia) 10 1900 (has links)
This thesis explores mothers' reactions to, and methods of dealing with, the sudden death of a child, using a constructivist approach. The study focusses on the meanings that mothers construe in relation to the sudden death of their child and the role of these constructions in her "recovery" from this loss. It also explores the grieving process, the effect of the loss on the mother, including a focus on changes in her value system, her role as a mother and as a wife, as well as the impact of this loss on the family system. The study was conducted on the basis of qualitative research methodology, making use of the case study method.
The sample consisted of three mothers, selected purposively. The data gathered was analysed inductively. / Psychology / M.A.(Clinical Psychology)

Expectations in romantic relationships : associations with cultural background and perceived quality of relationshipBedell, Belinda Anne 08 1900 (has links)
The theories of social cognition and personal constructs compose the theoretical backdrop to this dissertation which deals with people's expectations regarding romantic partners and relationships.Five women were interviewed and a qualitative analysis undertaken and discussed with a view to elucidating the influence of one's parents, cultural background and individual identity on the development and functioning of expectations. These expectation are based on beliefs about men and relationships in general and about healthy and unhealthy relationships in particular. Attension is given to the role of relationship beliefs and expectations in evaluations of romantic relationships and the consequences of such evaluations for relationship satisfaction and commitment. It is concluded that expectations play an important role in the process of partner and relationship eva, uation and thus, in the outcome of relationships. Parental and cultural influences are found to play an important part in shaping individual values and expetations, albeit in an indirect manner. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Previous issue date: 2005-08-15 / The current research deals with the constructive revision – in the cognitive structure of first year students in a public high school state, in the Uniform Rectilinear Motion (URM) conception, evolving from the Aristotelian to Galilean thinking. Students have a natural difficulty in understanding the existence of motion without a prime mover action – a Galilean concept – since they can only observe it in complex laboratory experiments or as a result of mental idealization. Differently, the Aristotelian conception permits an easier comprehension since it can be demonstrated from the sensorial observation of everyday experiments. In this work, through pedagogical activities based in the Kelly’s Experience Cycle (KEC), part of the Personal Constructs Theory (PCT), formulated by George Kelly, examined the URM concepts, as per Galileo and Aristotle and revised basic concepts of Physics related to the research topics of concern to the students, we intend to investigate whether the KCE is appropriate for the desired conceptual revision asking the following question: how to promote, among first year students in a public high school, the revision of Aristotelian thinking introducing Galilean logic? In order to reach our objective we did a didactic intervention based in moments of Cycle. The results obtained, indicate a quantity considerable of students that change from aristotelian’s conception to galilean’s conception. At the end of the research we came to the conclusion that the KEC method is appropriate to promote a change of students’ conception / Trata a presente pesquisa da revisão construtiva, na estrutura cognitiva dos alunos do 1º ano do ensino médio de uma escola pública estadual, da concepção de movimento retilíneo uniforme (MRU), do pensamento aristotélico para o galileano.

Analysing guided and recorded self-generated visual and expressive personal constructs as adjuncts to the counselling processPienaar, Pieter Abraham 07 March 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to see how meaningful and practically challenging a combined and structured arts therapy approach can be for an island-style counselling scenario. The overarching rationale with this particular arts therapy approach was to enable the client to gain self-insight by means of constructing a holistic view of present concerns and aspirations by capturing them in personal, functional and professional-looking artefacts conveying relevant self-messages. The client self-generated the content of each exercise, according to a manual and strategic interventions, and was guided by the counsellor in the user-friendly application of the arts. Apart from the unique combination of arts therapies in this study, another factor that may contribute to counselling practice is the attempt to make use of video as a non-threatening integrating medium. Throughout the process, the client made rehearsed video appearances to consolidate personal gains. At the end of the counselling process, the respondent enjoyed an “objective” screening of the process and he left with the personal constructs, a video tape and a CD-Rom application of the recorded process. The literature study reveals the numerous techniques, exercises and most common combinations spread across the domain of the 26 expressive modalities that were scrutinised to gain insight into this vast field. The empirical process revealed that it is possible to utilise the arts therapy approach meaningfully to enable a client to build a “visual narrative”. To optmise the potential this approach holds, the environment facilitating the process needs to be adequately equipped and the counsellor needs to be skilled in the application of particular electronic media or, alternatively, a group of experts need to co-operate. / Dissertation (MEd (Learning Support, Guidance and Counselling))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Educational Psychology / unrestricted

In caring for people with dementia confirmation of dignity and wellbeing is essential. How and in what way the nurse chooses to confirm determines the effect on the confirmation itself. If not individually adjusted to the person with dementia there’s a risk of dignity and wellbeing being reduced, damaged or lost. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe nurses’ personal beliefs and constructs on confirming dignity and wellbeing in people suffering from dementia. The nurses views on the person with dementia, personal beliefs on caring and on the meaning of dignity and wellbeing was predicted to have a significant role on the way he or she confirms the person. Method: Ten informants were interviewed on their personal experiences on confirming dignity and wellbeing. The narrations were analysed using a phenomenographic methodology in four different steps. The informants’ experiences were presented in an outcome space consisting sets of categories and subcategories of description. Result: Confirmation takes place within an interplay of factors with the potentiality to effect in a positively or negatively way. The nurses’ confirmation took place on the basis of their personal beliefs and constructs through secondary values, towards overall values, within a context of external factors and from a communicative system of feedback. The nurses had both enabling and hindering personal beliefs and constructs which were linked to time and organisational factors and to cognitive and physical abilities, communication and expression of the patient. Reflections and clinical implications: The study brings knowledge on nurses’ personal beliefs and constructs on confirming dignity and wellbeing. The differences in nursing among the nurses can be further viewed and understood from a life-world perspective and contribute to nursing education, supervision and reflection.

Previous issue date: 2015-07-31 / Distance Education is a mode of delivering education that allows new opportunities of access to higher and continuing education. In this context, the supervised curricular stage requires the compulsory presence, according to the legislation. This research presents a methodological proposal based on George Kelly's Theory of Personal Constructs, whose objective is to analyse the contributions of the experience of the Supervised Curricular Stage V, organised and based on Kelly's Experience Cycle (KEC), towards the construction of a reflexive teacher's practice, as well as to relate the conceptions of managers and classroom teachers of stage field schools, about aspects that favor and/or difficult the performance of the graduate students in the school. Participated in the study a representative of the Executive Secretary of Education, six school principals and six classroom teachers from stage field schools, who took part in the first phase. Besides these, nineteen licentiate students from the course of Licentiate in Physics from UFRPE/UAB also participated in the second phase. The methodology used was organised as a KEC, which has five phases, allied to the work of Cooperative Group. The analysis of the results showed the need for integration between the institutions involved in the formation process of the future teacher. The reflective process started by the KEC enabled the evolution of conceptions of licentiate students/trainees, contributing to their learning. Previous issue date: 2008-08-29 / The present work of research proposes to teach the fractal geometry in high school classroom, with approach in the forms the objects natural and build by the man. Despite of the utility of the fractal geometry for description of the natural objects, this geometry is a subject that has been taught poor in the last series of the high school. The objective of the work is: i. to identify as the students conceive the geometric forms of objects and processes of the nature, without previous knowledge of fractal geometry; the procedure methodological is to carry the students for to apply the Euclidian and fractal in the description of the different shape natural an build by the man. Educational software of dynamic geometry will be used to work with the Euclidean and fractal geometry. The object used will be some students the last year of the high school from a public school of the state of Pernambuco. The theory of the Kelly personal constructs were be used in the analysis of the data.
