Late-Life Development of Personal Life Investment: The Musts and Cans of Aging / Entwicklung des persönlichen Lebensinvestments im Alter: Pflicht und Kür des Alterns

Schindler, Ines 15 May 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Striving for personal goals is one important aspect of composing one is life within a developmental context. In this realm, personal life investment (PLI) measures the amount of energy (action and thought) that people report investing in central life domains (e.g., health, family, leisure, independence). This study aimed at understanding the functional relations of PLI, its development between 70 and over 100 years, and its role for successful aging. Obligatory and optional PLI were distinguished to differentiate between life domains where older individuals need to invest energy to maintain a basis for their development and domains that allow for many more degrees of freedom as to where and when to invest. Cross-sectional and longitudinal data from the Berlin Aging Study (BASE) showed that optional PLI, in contrast to obligatory PLI, had only positive motivational and affective correlates, declined between age 80 and 90, and contributed to successful aging as long as older people had enough resources to invest in optional domains.

Den privata poliisen : En kvalitativ studie över hur poliser i yttre tjänst påverkas av sitt yrke privat / The private police : – A qualitative study regarding how police officers are affected by their work in their personal life

Hörnlund, Gabriella January 2018 (has links)
This study aims to understand how police officers in Sweden are affected by their line of work in their personal life. The study is based on qualitative research where the empirical material has been gathered from interviews with Swedish police officers. A total of eight police officers have contributed to this study. The main theoretical concept used in this study is Göran Ahrnes notion of the “organizational centaur”. Alongside this concept, the essay also covers police culture and organizational concept. The results of this study reveal that several police officers find it hard to combine their line of work with their personal life. Not only does the occupation affect the police officers themselves, it also affects their family and acquaintances. Moreover, the results demonstrate how police officers relate to their profession in their spare time. Finally, the results of this study express how changes within the police organization has affected the work situation for many police officers in Sweden.

Improving the lifestyles of previously disadvantaged individuals through a personal life planning programme

Mokoena, Marshal Buti 30 November 2006 (has links)
There is scant research concerning youth development programmes specifically from Adler's (1968) Individual Psychology perspective. Current programmes seem to be void of critical issues that are important in the local context because of their having a strong bias towards the Western perspective. Thus, the present research project sought firstly to assist the Previously Disadvantaged Youth (PDY) to develop constructive lifestyles characterised by self-mastery, encouragement, creativity and social interest. Secondly, it aimed to obtain specific local African input that would help expand the current Personal Life Planning Programme (PLPP) to one that addresses the unique needs and circumstances confronting South African PDYs today. Finally, it attempted to test the validity, scope and merit of Adler's theoretical assertion, within the context of the previously disadvantaged communities in South Africa, that all humans are engaged in a lifelong striving for superiority to overcome perpetual feelings of inferiority and life tasks. The latter objectives were addressed through the implementation of the PLPP. The study, as well as the related PLPP, is strongly founded on Adler's Individual Psychology (Adler, 1968; Ansbacher & Ansbacher 1956; Corsini & Wedding, 2005; Meyer et al., 2003; Prochaska & Narcross cited in Osborn, 2001). The relevant data were collected from a sample of matriculants from the PDY population living in a black township near Pretoria. The information was collected by means of the PLPP workbook; semi structured interviews, as well as, audiovisual equipment. A combination of a "Pre-structured Case Outline" and the related "Sequential Analysis" (Miles & Huberman, 1994, p. 85) was adopted, with the researcher undertaking the entire data management process. In addition to confirming the applicability of Adler's theory within the PDY context, the findings suggest that the research objectives were significantly met, i.e. the participants reported and displayed marked lifestyle improvements along with specific life skills development needs related to their deprivation.

Fé, Ana Lúcia Damasceno Moura 21 May 2008 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Ana Lucia Damasceno Moura Fe.pdf: 748242 bytes, checksum: 6f7d23442bc78159c0679164363be5d3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-05-21 / This doctoral thesis, of an exclusively theoretical nature, focuses on the use of mobile technologies in the corporate environment, with voice, data and Internet access resources such as cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and notebooks, and the implications of the growing use of these technologies in the lives of their users. The theme is justified because mobile technologies, which are at the core of a technological revolution that has caused major impacts on the personal and professional lives of individuals, have received little attention in the field of Communications in Brazil and from theoreticians of postmodernity. The main questions comprising the research problem were: Do companies really achieve gains in productivity through these technologies? What is the highest level (if such a limit exists) of productivity that corporations seek? Do companies and/or professionals feel any concern or unease about this question? To what extent do resources such as permanent connections and sophisticated hardware, allied to the pressure for higher productivity, eliminate or attenuate the boundaries between personal life, work and leisure? Do companies and/or professionals consider this lack of boundaries beneficial or harmful? Does this scenario encompass any form of violence? Is there awareness or reflection about it? The theoretical fundaments underpinning the thesis included the theory of sociodromology (Virilio and Trivinho) and the sociology and psychology of work (Antunes, Bourdieu and Dejours) as well as theories of postmodernity that underpin discussions about how machines have usurped man s place at the center of existence. The methodology adopted here consisted of a survey, registration and review of the selected bibliography and of theoretical and epistemological reflections about the subject of the study. Among the main conclusions of this research is the verification/validation of the hypothesis of the consolidation of mobile technologies as the main protagonists of human life, offering professionals not only benefits such as enhanced information flows, help in performing tasks, and rapid contact with their superiors, peers and families, etc. but also drawbacks such as the invasion of work into personal life and a hidden, unquantifiable and unpaid increase in working hours, as well as physical and emotional stress. Wireless communications in real time have undoubtedly benefited companies in terms of increased productivity. However, their introduction into the daily life of workers has generally been unplanned, without studies or reflections about their negative impact on people s quality of life / A presente Tese de Doutorado, de caráter exclusivamente teórico, foca a utilização, no ambiente corporativo, de tecnologias móveis com recursos de voz, dados e acesso à rede mundial, como celulares, personal digital assistants (PDAs) e notebooks, e as implicações do crescente uso dessas tecnologias na vida dos usuários.

Le droit à la protection des données personnelles : recherche sur un droit fondamental / The right to data protection : study on a human right

Debaets, Émilie 12 December 2014 (has links)
The digital revolution is ambivalent. On the one hand, it empowers the State to strengthen its ability to fulfil its responsibilities and the individuals to exercise some of their rights, yet on the other hand, it enables the capturing and storing of an increasing part of day to day personal life. In order to address the increased surveillance of individuals, proposals are regularly put forward to incorporate, at the very highest judicial level, a human right to personal data protection, as the existence of such a right would improve the protection afforded to individuals. This thesis undertakes a descriptive, explanatory and evaluative analysis of the human right to personal data protection. In order to examine the making of such a right by the French constitutional court, the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union, this study sets out first to reveal its foundations. The right to data protection is then clearly identified and distinguished from other human rights such as the right to privacy. In order to measure the extent of such a right, the study then focusses on analysing the restrictions to which it may be subject when in conflict with other equally protected individual rights or with collective constraints of general interest. The enhancement of the protection afforded to the individual is therefore not as straightforward as it may initially seem. Such enhancement could however arise from the restructuring of the normative process which this human right to data protection implies.
