The objective of this work was the characterization of photoconductive and photo-refractive materials using optical and electrical techniques. The most important property of these materials is photoconductivity so that we concentrated in the measurement of this quantity. One of the most studied materials in our laboratory, Bi12TiO20, is poorly photoconductive and, because of that, the standard technique using a white lamp followed by a monochromator, to select the illumination wavelength on the sample, has shown a very poor sensistivity. In order to improve the measurement we have therefore developed a system based on an array of almost monochromatic LEDs (Light-Emitting Diodes) with different wavelengths, which are able to provide with greater light intensity than with the classical system. We also propose a different system for the data collection and processing, which considers the exponential distribution of light along the sample¿s thickness, due to the characteristic bulk absorption of these materials. Our results have shown that the new instrument and the new data processing method allow us to obtain much more information about the materials under analysis than would be possible with the classical method. The new technique was applied to the study of pure and doped B i12TiO20, as well as Bi12Ga O20 and CdTe. The results, together with further information obtained from other techniques (holography and modulated photocurrent), have allowed us to detect some localized states inside the bandgap of the materials and therefore get a better insight of their structure that is very important for the understanding of their photoconductivity properties / Mestrado / Propriedades Óticas e Espectroscopia da Matéria Condensada / Mestre em Física

This paper presents a study about photoelectromotive force effect produced by a spatially oscillating \ speckle" pattern when projected onto photoconductive or photorefractive materials. Among the contributions of this paper we can mention the improvement of both the existing theoretical model and use this phenomenon to measure the transverse mechanical vibrations. Basically, the effect of photoelectromotive force generates an AC photocurrent with the same frequency of the oscillating pattern and a magnitude which depends on the amplitude to which the light pattern varies spatially. From our theoretical model, we could predict the existence of a maximum value for the photocurrent, which occurs for a given vibration amplitude related to the average size of the \speckle". We con rmed experimentally the existence of this maximum, but the value is a little different than theoretically expected. We measured the frequency response of the photocurrent and related the results with the temporal response characteristics of the photoconductive material. To perform the experimental measurements we developed a mechanical vibration sensor based on photoelectromotive force effect, demonstrating the applicability for measurements of amplitude and frequency of a vibrating surface. The sensor consists of a photoconductive crystal and an electronic amplification. Light from a laser is directed to a target vibrant and the backscattered light in the form of a speckle pattern is focused on the photoconductive crystal. The crystals used were Bi12TiO20 and CdTe:V under illumination of 532nm and 1064nm, respectively. The system is interesting both for mechanical vibrations measurements and for materials characterization / Mestrado / Física da Matéria Condensada / Mestre em Física

On the theory of planar and cylindrical dielectric waveguides with photorefractive nonlinearity

Geisler, Andreas 01 November 2004 (has links)
Planar and cylindrical waveguides with linear cladding and a core with real, field dependent permittivity are considered, in particular even and odd modes are investigated.Assuming a plane wave with TE-polarization, Maxwell´s equations for the electric field lead to a nonlinear differential equation whose solution is approximated by means of a Green s function and an iteration method. Referring to a photorefractive permittivity with external field, the approximate solution is compared with the numerical solution; furthermore, the amplitude of even modes in the planar waveguide is compared with the analytically determined amplitude. In both cases, the agreement is satisfactory. The conditions of convergence of the iteration are investigated for a photorefractive permittivity with external field. It is shown that they are fulfilled for suitable choice of the width of the waveguide and the propagation constant. By means of the iteration method, the change of the linear dispersion relation due to the field dependent permittivity is described. The ratio of the power flow in the core to the total power flow is linearized in order to investigate the influence of weak nonlinearity.

Nano and Nanostructured Materials for Optical Applications

Chantharasupawong, Panit 01 January 2015 (has links)
Nano and nanostructured materials offer unique physical and chemical properties that differ considerably from their bulk counterparts. For decades, due to their fascinating properties, they have been extensively explored and found to be beneficial in numerous applications. These materials are key components in many cutting-edge optic and photonic technologies, including photovoltaics, waveguides and sensors. In this dissertation, the uses of nano and nanostructured materials for optical applications are investigated in the context of optical limiting, three dimensional displays, and optical sensing. Nanomaterials with nonlinear optical responses are promising candidates for self-activating optical limiters. In the first part of this study, optical limiting properties of unexplored nanomaterials are investigated. A photoacoustic detection technique is developed as an alternative characterization method for studying optical nonlinearities. This was done with an indigenously developed setup for measuring the photoacoustic signals generated from samples excited with a pulse laser. A theoretical model for understanding the experimental observations is presented. In addition, the advantages of this newly developed technique over the existing methods are demonstrated. Blending optical sensitizers with photoconducting polymers and chromophores results in a polymer composite that is able to record a light grating. This composite can be used as recording media in 3D holographic display technology. Here, 2D nano materials, like graphenes, are used as optical sensitizers to improve the response time of a photorefractive polymer. The addition of graphenes to a PATPD/ECZ/7-DCST composite results in a three-fold enhancement in response time and therefore faster recording speed of the medium. The faster build-up time is attributed to better charge generation and mobility due to the presence of graphenes in the composite. Lastly, a facile nanofabrication technique is developed to produce metallic nanostructures with a tunable plasmonic response. The enhancement of the light-matter interactions due to these nanostructures in sensing an analyte is demonstrated.

Nonlinear optical studies of dye-doped nematic liquid crystals

Klysubun, Prapong 03 April 2002 (has links)
Nematic liquid crystals possess large optical nonlinearities owing to their large refractive index anisotropy coupled with the collective molecular reorientation. Doping absorbing dyes into liquid crystals increases their optical responses significantly due to increased absorption in the visible region, absorption-induced intermolecular torque, cis-trans photoisomerization, and other guest-host effects. The guest-host mixtures can be employed in display applications, optical storage devices, and others. In this dissertation, nonlinear optical studies were carried out on dye-doped nematic liquid crystal cells. The main objectives of the studies were to distinguish and characterize the several processes that can lead to the formation of dynamic gratings of different types in the samples, and to study the photorefractive and the orientational responses of these samples. Furthermore, we tried to explain and model the dynamical behaviors of the observed grating formations. The experimental techniques employed in this study include asymmetric two-beam coupling, forced light scattering, and polarization holographic method. The asymmetric two-beam coupling experiments revealed that the induced grating was a photorefractive phase grating created by the nematic director reorientation within the plane of incidence. The dynamics of the beam coupling showed that two different mechanisms with different temporal responses were involved. The grating translation technique identified both gratings as pure photorefractive index gratings with phase shifts of ~ p/2 between the grating and the interference pattern. In addition, the dynamical behavior of the grating formation, obtained from forced light scattering experiments, also exhibited a two-time constant response. The dynamical behaviors of the build-up and decay of the photocurrent were investigated. The two dynamics exhibited both a two-time constant behavior, suggesting that the origin of the two-time constant dynamics observed in the two-beam coupling and the forced light scattering experiments resides in the process of photo-charge generation. The photorefractive gain coefficients were found to be in the range of 100 – 400 cm-1. The values of the nonlinear optical Kerr index (~ 0.08 cm2/W) measured in samples with certain dye/liquid crystal combinations are higher than what has been observed in other dye-doped nematics and other liquid crystal/polymer systems. All the samples showed a threshold behavior with respect to the magnitude of the applied electric field. This threshold behavior was observed both in forced light scattering experiments and polarization holographic experiments. We believe that the origin of this threshold lies in the process of photogeneration, which was found to exhibit the same threshold behavior at the same value of the applied voltage. An asymmetry of the photorefractive gain with respect to the direction of the applied electric field was observed in samples with high dye concentration. This was attributed to the beam fanning effect, which has also been observed in other high-gain photorefractive materials. Polarization holographic measurements showed that the dye enhancement effect is primarily due to the intermolecular interaction between the dye molecules and the liquid crystal host, and that the trans-cis photoisomerization plays a lesser role. The photoinduced orientational response was also studied using polarization holographic experiments. A number of observations confirmed that the birefringent grating is due to the nematic director reorientation within the plane of incidence, under the combined effect of the applied electric field and the optical field. The diffraction efficiency was found to depend linearly on the writing beam power, while the dependence of the self-diffraction efficiency on the writing beam power roughly assumes a cubic relationship. The dynamical behavior of the birefringent grating formation was investigated. The build-up dynamics was found to be best modeled as a double-time constant response, while the decay is best fitted by a single exponential. The response of the samples to an oscillating electric field was studied as a function of the modulation frequency. Very interesting and reproducible dynamics was observed, revealing the complex dynamical response of the liquid crystal director to the magnitude and rate of change of an applied electric field. The small signal response was also measured, but did not reveal any sign of a resonance behavior. The conductivity and the photoconductivity of the samples were measured. The relationship between the measured current and the applied voltage was found to be cubic at low applied voltage, and to become linear at higher applied voltage. We could explain this behavior using a double-charge-injection-in-a-weak-electrolyte model, but this is only one of the possible mechanisms that could explain this behavior. The photocurrent was found to increase linearly with the illumination power, which indicates that the charge carrier recombination rate is proportional to the carrier density. The measured electrical conductivity was found to be proportional to the square root of the dye concentration, confirming the validity of the proposed charge-injection model. / Ph. D.

Signalstrahlverstärkung und Phasenkonjugation durch photorefraktive parametrische Wellenmischung in Bariumtitanat- und Kalium-Tantalat-Niobat-Kristallen / Signal beam amplification and phase conjugation by photorefractive parametric wave mixing in barium titanate and potassium-tantalate-niobate crystals

Neumann, Jens 26 September 2000 (has links)

Kulikovsky, Lazar January 2003 (has links)
The ongoing development of information processing requires new materials that are capable of effective light modulation, processing or storage. Photorefractive (PR) materials characterized by a reversible light-induced change of the refractive index have been effectively used for different optical applications. When a photorefractive medium is inhomogeneously irradiated, using for example an interference pattern, the generation, transport and trapping of the charge carriers results in the formation of a space charge field. The spatial modulation of the space charge field is transformed through the electro-optical effect into a modulation of the refractive index.<br /> While photorefractive crystals are well known since the discovery of the PR effect in 1966, the photorefractive effect in polymers has only recently been demonstrated. The flexibility of material composition and thus its parameters along with easy processability of polymer materials essentially extends the range of possible applications of photorefractive materials. The response time of PR polymers is defined by the charge carrier dynamics including generation, transport, trapping etc. But a relation between the charge carriers dynamics and the response time of PR effect has not yet been proven experimentally. In this work a method for the experimental determination of all photo-physical parameters defining the formation of the space charge field in organic photorefractive materials has been proposed for the first time. It is based on the analysis of the photocurrent measured under different irradiation conditions such as continuous and pulse irradiation with different intensities, the variation of the pulse length, the number of pulses or the delay between pulses. Thus, the irradiation with single short pulses allowed to determine the mobility of free charge carriers as well as the characteristic parameters of shallow traps. In order to determine the density of deep traps, the intensity dependence of the steady-state photocurrent was investigated. The determining system of equations was analytically solved and it has been shown that the sublinear dependence of the photocurrent on intensity is primary correlated with the ratio of detrapping and trapping coefficients for deep traps. The detrapping coefficient of deep traps was independently determined from double-pulse experiments in which the delay between two pulses was varied. The dynamics of the space charge field formation has been numerically simulated, using the obtained photophysical parameters, and proven to coincide well with the experimentally determined dynamics of the PR effect. This allowed to relate the parameters of the individual processes participating in the formation of the space charge field to the dynamics of the PR effect in the investigated polymers. These results show that neither photogeneration nor transport of the charge carriers do limit the formation of the space charge field. It is demonstrated that in the investigated PR materials the dynamics of the space charge field is limited by the filling of deep traps with the photogenerated charge carriers.

In this work important contributions to the field and to the self stabilized holographic record in litium niobate were achieved and to the dynamic formation and hologram evolution study during different fixing stages. Other important contributions in this work refer to more efficient technique development and/or simpler ones to hologram fixing. On terms of self stabilized record our work allowed the use of these techniques to obtain some holograms with high efficiency diffractions and in a reproducible form. The self stabilized holographic record in litium niobate had already been used before. The new point here is the detailed study about the process dynamic which allowed a better understanding of the technique possibilities and limitations including the detailed study of the effect of the oxidation degree (thus the relation [Fe3+]/[Fe2+]) of the material about the stabilization system behaviour. According to the referred studies above which permitted a better understanding of the process, it was possible to develop the oxidated crystals fixing technique which permitted to get fixed nets with high diffractions efficience with predictable values according to the crystals properties and in a reproducible form. The self stabilized record was applied sucessfully to the fixing technique (recording and compensation) for the first time to high temperature in a so much simpler form than the classical one which permitted to obtain excellent results even using reduced samples to which the classical process has not worked satisfactionally. Parallel to this, we showed (theoric and experimentally) the associated problems to the diffraction efficience in thick holograms. We showed the use of an auxiliar bin (frequently used) for this kind of measure results in considerable errors and to this case we propose a so much simpler form of achieving this measure / Doutorado / Física da Matéria Condensada / Doutor em Ciências
