Acts of Dissension : how political theatre has been presented in the past and what strategies the playwright can employ to make issues of radical or alternative politics more accessible to a mainstream theatre audience

Reid, Robert January 2007 (has links)
The key focus of this research project is the marginalisation of radical and alternative politics in modern democratic societies, how they have been presented in a mainstream theatrical context and what strategies a political playwright can employ to present the issues of those politics while overcoming such marginalisation. Referencing cultural theorists including Noam Chomsky, Naomi Klein and Howard Zinn, this study argues that contemporary cultures operate within the boundaries of an internalised conservative value set propagated through systems of coercion utilised by the media, governments and corporations. With a specific interest in contemporary theatre, this study proposes that this internalisation functions as an efficient and nearly invisible censor, rendering more complex the task of the political playwright in communicating with a wider and more inclusive audience and that by examining the methods used in the manufacture of consent and then returning to the strategies utilized by political playwrights in the past and at present, we can better identify how to bypass that internal censor and do something more than " preach to the converted." This project comprises two interrelated components; one is an original full length play script, Pornography: The True Confessions of Mandy Lightspeed; the other is an exegesis which compliments and augments the play. The play script represents %60 and the exegesis the remaining %40 of the examinable output of this project, although both are considered integral (and integrate) parts of the whole. Central to both these texts is the question; " How has political theatre been presented in the past and what strategies can the playwright employ to make issues of radical or alternative politics more accessible to a mainstream theatre audience?"

But what I really want to do is write : adapting the Mike Leigh Method for writers for the stage

Irvine, Ian Kyle January 2008 (has links)
This thesis, comprised of a stage play and exegesis, asks whether the Mike Leigh Method, commonly used by Auteur directors could be adapted to benefit a playwright during the redrafting and development process. I seek to answer this question by examining differing methodologies of drama creation and charting my process as I work to redraft my character driven stage play Deceased Estate through the adaptation and application of the Mike Leigh Method. I contend that Leigh’s method affords a set of honed and proven guidelines that can help the playwright get to the heart of the character driven drama and offer an adapted method template that can be used and furthered by other Playwrights wishing to develop their work in this manner.

According to the western imagination, theater has arisen from Dionysian bacchanals in the Ancient Greek. Despite the repressive character of certain historical periods, it is also true that its alleged libertine nature has always accompanied it. In Brazil, for instance, it is not surprising that the national theater has balanced between the sacred and the profane, after all, it is known that the consolidation of our moral, essentially catholic, patriarchal, was established amid practices of a society emerged in a lustful sexual life. Currently, the sexuality theme and expression, which occupy the center of intense debates on human rights, are constantly present in the theater. Due to having the focus turned to the intersection between theater and sexuality, this dissertation pointed out, in the first chapter, evidences of such crossing; in the second one, it analyzed the playwriting strategies of Agreste (Malva-Rosa), by Newton Moreno, paradigmatic work of recent discussions about playwriting as well as sexuality. It was concluded that the play carries the sign of ambiguity. On one side, aimed at legitimating the art of storytelling, the play rescues the tradition of oral expression, elements of popular culture and narratives classical strategies; also, it establishes intertextuality with art canons. On the other side, with the target of dismantling classical rules of theater, it is aligned with the tendencies of contemporary playwriting, creating a pastiche of genres and subgenres to tell a story which is opposed to the ongoing Jewish- Christian moral. / CNPq: 133371/2014-0

Her literary production for adults (plays and cordéis ) has been thought here considering three aspects that, connected, give to her writing a singular form: the archetypicals images and characters of the european Middle Ages imaginary and of the Northeast of Brazil, the regionalist discourse based on folk culture and the medieval iberian focus on brazilian northeastern culture. At the same time, those marks put the author among a large literary tradition that, during the XXth century, tried to find a cultural identity to the brazilian Northeast. There is also, in this study, a attempt to approach the author style to the grotesque realism of François Rabelais, bringing up the analysis of this author and style made by the Literature theoretician Mikhail Bakhtin. After that, there is a discussion about the theatrical language and it is shown how two of Lourdes Ramalho s plays ( As Velhas and Romance do conquistador ) were brought to the stage through the interpretations of those texts made by one of the most creative directors of contemporary theatre: Moncho Rodriguez (Vigo/Spain, 1951). Those stagings of Lourdes Ramalho s texts become stronger the idea of a brazilian Northeast still immersed into traditions and esthetics that go back to the iberian Middle Ages. Both of the artists see, imaginate and create a brazilian Northeast as a space of traditions (iberians, jewishes, moorishes, africans) and also as an universe where the presence of the supernatural, of the fantastic, is very strong.

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze texts written by contemporary playwrights from the city of São Paulo, between the years of 2005 to 2015, considering a relationship between text and the scene within the dramaturgies, identifying and reflecting on a presence of incorporated elements of a scenic grammar that evoke materialities in its textual structures. The analysis starts from the debate about the change in the state of the text throughout the twentieth century, considering the double movement of emancipation of the text and the scene in relation to the tutelage of the dramatic genre, which sets up new possibilities of writing and staging more permissible among themselves. Based on theoretical references in the first chapter, an analysis evaluation is created for the examination of selected dramaturgies, with the aim of positioning, in the third chapter, between two poles: mythos and opsis - and later considered recurrent polarities between devices found in the texts. The corpus of this dissertation, analyzed in the second chapter, is composed of texts by authors who won the Shell Prize of Theater in São Paulo in the category of Best Author in the period of eleven years - until the beginning of the research. This methodological cut is resumed at the end of the third chapter with the aim of establishing connections between the process of legitimation of cultural goods by instances of consecration, according to a conception of the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, and the dramaturgical structures analyzed, on the unfolding between theory and practice in contemporaneity, as well as on the function of the author and the notion of authorship, in the context of the new state of the theatrical text - and in the place of the playwright - in the process of creation.

Based on my personal experience in writing new dramaturgy, and teaching playwriting in workshops, this project will organize a way of teaching playwriting, without relying on specific languages, much less normative ideas. For my examples, I will use Gota d’água by Chico Buarque and Paulo Pontes, as well as some classical Brazilian plays, written by Gonçalves Dias, Hilda Hilst, Nelson Rodrigues, Gianfrancesco Guarnieiri and Martins Penna, easy to find in libraries and websites, to introduce the students to the Brazilian dramatic literature. This research is based on authors in playwriting teaching, such as David Edgar, Renata Pallottini, Robert McKee and Jean-Pierre Ryngaert, looking for a way of developing new plays. Finally, how play readings in the classroom, theatrical and dramatic games, writing exercises and group work, how all that combined can encourage the appearance of new playwrights, new theatergoers, new theater groups, providing emotional, cultural and human development.
