Effects of Trinexapac-ethyl and Winter Overseeding on the Morphological Characteristics and Traffic Tolerance of Bermudagrass Cultivars

Haselbauer, William D 01 May 2010 (has links)
Common bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] and hybrid bermudagrass [C. dactylon (L.) Pers. X C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy] are some of the most common turfgrasses used on athletic fields. Subsequently, the traffic tolerance of commercially available cultivars and the effects of trinexapac-ethyl (TE) on bermudagrass athletic fields with or without perennial ryegrass are often limited. A two year study at the University of Tennessee was conducted under simulated athletic field traffic to evaluate the performance of bermudagrass cultivars as affected by TE and overseeding. Bermudagrass cultivars evaluated were Tifway, Riviera, Patriot, and Celebration. TE treatments consisted of an untreated control, TE at 76.3 g a.i. ha-1 every 14 days until 14 days prior to trafficking (TE A), and TE at 76.3 g a.i. ha-1 every 14 days until 14 days after trafficking (TE B). Overseeding treatments consisted of no overseeding and overseeding at 670 kg ha-1 of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Plots were rated for percent green cover using digital image analysis after every 5 traffic events. Soil physical characteristic measurements were performed after every traffic season. Morphological data was determined by measuring number of leaves, internode lengths, leaf angle, and leaf width of the bermudagrass. Cultivar was significant for percent green cover for both years of this study with Tifway and Celebration having the highest ratings and Patriot having the lowest rating. TE was also significant for percent green cover for the first 10 traffic events with TE treatment B having lower percent cover values. Morphological characteristic was significant for leaf angle for both years of the study. A more vertical leaf angle to the shoot occurred in the more traffic resistant cultivars Tifway and Celebration. Finally, both TE treatments yielded higher percent green cover values in 2008 when morphological characteristic data was collected and a more vertical leaf angle to the shoot occurred compared to the untreated control. Tifway, Celebration, and Riviera when applied with trinexapac-ethyl before the traffic season and overseeded with perennial ryegrass would be beneficial for athletic field managers.

Francesc Alegre: La primera guerra púnica, 1472. Estudi i edició crítica

Bescós Prat, Pere 25 February 2011 (has links)

This work aims at studying the relationship that exists among modernity, rationalization and violence in the book Is this a man?, by Primo Levi. This author is an Italian Jewish, the central character of his book, which consists in the testimony of what he lived in Auschwitz, one of the biggest Nazi concentration camps. In the book, the author recreates, through language, an extra literary world, that of the camp, with its own architecture, its organization and ways of control and extermination. Primo Levi tells the atrocities committed, in a barbaric way, by human beings against other human beings, which makes clear that, when the fight is for survival, ethical and moral values are tested; likewise, in the case of the executioner, true faces are revealed, showing the force of barbarism and its capacity of exceeding all the human limits. Levi tells the facts feeling as if in charge of a moral duty towards the society, the duty of speaking for those who did not survive. Despite the difficulties of representation of his traumatic experience, Levi exposes the whole bureaucratically organized system that made possible that Auschwitz ended up being the horror itself; the place where the instrumentalized reason destroyed the illuminist principles of progress and made men become animals, condemned to a destructive and deadly violence, that was subsidized by the notion of progress and technical development, which were signals of the modernity purposes.

Modélisation dynamique de l'interaction hôte-pathogène appliquée à la primo-infection à VIH / Dynamical modelling of host-pathogen interaction applied to primary HIV infection

Drylewicz, Julia 30 October 2009 (has links)
Primary HIV infection, which corresponds to the first weeks of infection, is a crucial phase which determines partly the clinical progression. The dynamics of HIV viral load and CD4 count during this phase is complex. First, as it is asymptotic in most of the cases, the primary HIV infection is not observed. Moreover, the date of infection is generally unknown and the evolution of markers with respect to the time of infection is difficult. Dynamical models based on systems of ordinary differential equations (ODE) allow to take into account complex non-linear between HIV and the immune system. Moreover, their mechanistic characteristic can be useful through the understanding of physiopathology or the effect of an intervention. However, the estimation of this kind of models is complex and several methods are currently available. We propose here a method of estimation for ODE models taking into account the uncertainty of the date of infection. This method is applied to real dataset of 761 seroconverters from the CASCADE Collaboration during their first year of follow-up. Dynamical models have many parameters on which we can include random effects and explanatory variables. The selection of the best model can be time-consuming if we consider the computation's time issues met during estimation. We develop score tests for exploring complex models with an application to HIV dynamics models. Finally, we compare different biological models of primary HIV infection to predict the dynamics of plasma viral load and CD4 count.

Associação de bactérias probióticas potencializa a produção de anticorpos antirrábicos em bovinos vacinados contra raiva / Association with probiotic bacteria enhances the production of antirabies antibodies in cattle vaccinated against rabies

Made available in DSpace on 2016-01-26T18:55:42Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Cristina Cecilia.pdf: 245966 bytes, checksum: 7e28e7fd7df013e4d0bfb113581dba6e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-12-05 / This study evaluated the effect of supplementation with a combination of probiotic microorganisms, added to a mineral mixture in different doses/day, in the production of serum antibodies against the rabies virus in primo vaccinated cattle. Forty-two male Nelore cattle, divided into three groups (n = 14): control group (CG) received 70 grams of mineral mixture/animal/day; probiotic groups 4 grams (G4P) and 8 grams (G8P) received 70 grams of mineral mixture/animal/day with 4 and 8 grams of added probiotics respectively. The individual anti-rabies antibody titers were determined using the technique of seroneutralization in cells based on the Rapid Fluorescent Focus Inhibition Test (RFFIT). The results obtained were compared using the unpaired t test with a 5% significance level. There were statistical differences in the mean serum concentrations between the CG, G4P and G8P groups, 30 and 60 days after the primo vaccination and after 60 days only the G8P group demonstrated minimum protective antibody titers in 100% of the animals. There is evidence of beneficial effects attributed to the association between probiotic microorganisms and the anti-rabies humoral immune response; in addition, an increase in the dose incorporated into the mineral mixture maintains high levels of serum antibodies in primo vaccinated cattle.
