No. of bitstreams: 1 Cristina Cecilia.pdf: 245966 bytes, checksum: 7e28e7fd7df013e4d0bfb113581dba6e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-12-05 / This study evaluated the effect of supplementation with a combination of probiotic microorganisms, added to a mineral mixture in different doses/day, in the production of serum antibodies against the rabies virus in primo vaccinated cattle. Forty-two male Nelore cattle, divided into three groups (n = 14): control group (CG) received 70 grams of mineral mixture/animal/day; probiotic groups 4 grams (G4P) and 8 grams (G8P) received 70 grams of mineral mixture/animal/day with 4 and 8 grams of added probiotics respectively. The individual anti-rabies antibody titers were determined using the technique of seroneutralization in cells based on the Rapid Fluorescent Focus Inhibition Test (RFFIT). The results obtained were compared using the unpaired t test with a 5% significance level. There were statistical differences in the mean serum concentrations between the CG, G4P and G8P groups, 30 and 60 days after the primo vaccination and after 60 days only the G8P group demonstrated minimum protective antibody titers in 100% of the animals. There is evidence of beneficial effects attributed to the association between probiotic microorganisms and the anti-rabies humoral immune response; in addition, an increase in the dose incorporated into the mineral mixture maintains high levels of serum antibodies in primo vaccinated cattle.

Eliminating Data Redundancy: Our Solution for Database Discovery using Alma/Primo

Kindle, Jacob, Clamon, Travis 05 May 2016 (has links)
East Tennessee State University recently adopted Alma & Primo and was suprised by the lack of an A-Z database discovery module. Frustrated by having to maintain electronic resources separately on our library website and in Alma, we embarked on a goal to eliminate redundancy and use Alma/Primo exclusively. This presentation will cover our entire workflow in both Alma & Primo and the issues we encountered along the way. I'll first go over our process in Alma including MARC record creation, electronic collection setup, and the top level collection module. Next, I'll cover our workflow in Primo including normalization rules, scoping, PNX display, facets, and code table changes. The last section will cover the Primo X-Services API and how it was developed into an A-Z Database list.

Bodies, current vehicles, or embodied agents? : An anthropological study of the human body and the human condition in an age of Transhumanism

Bäckström, Ingrid January 2020 (has links)
Transhumanism is a philosophy and a contemporary movement dedicated to improving the human condition in various ways. This thesis explores how the transhumanist movement contributes to the contemporary conceptualization or reconceptualization of the human body and the human condition. Furthermore, this thesis discusses three transhumanist key concepts, namely Mind Uploading, Cryonics, and the Primo Posthuman, and how these ideas might affect the research participants’ understanding and enactment of the human body and the human condition. By relying on ethnographic methods, including semi-structured interviews and participant observations from a 12-week fieldwork in Arizona, the ethnographic material is then discussed with the use of Annemarie Mol’s body multiple theory. In addition to this, the material is also analyzed with literature discussing the three main themes of this thesis, namely the re-conceptualization of the body, the mind, and body dualism, and the redefinition of death and the dying body. The ethnographic material and the accounts made from the research participants illustrate that the body is enacted and understood as insufficient and fragile, cartesian, a current vehicle readable and quantifiable through numbers and graphs, and a body whose mind can be uploaded into a computational substrate by the transhumanist community. It also describes how the body can be enacted as alive, an anatomical object, and a body with agency and personhood. Furthermore, the thesis concludes that the transhumanist movement contributes to the contemporary conceptualization and reconceptualization of the human body and the human condition by enacting multiple bodies as well as discussing and imagining new possible human conditions and human bodies. Lastly, this thesis does not only address important anthropological questions regarding ontology and the enactment of the human body. It also discusses relevant questions about humans and technology, as well as questions regarding death and imagination.

Poveda Jover, Jonatan 08 October 2020 (has links)

The role of heme in primary colonization of the digestive tract by Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron

Halpern, David 08 November 2017 (has links)
The intestinal microbiota comprises the numerous microorganisms colonizing the digestive tract. This flora, and the variations it undergoes are unique and specific to each individual. The microbial balance, which is a determinant of our state of health, develops gradually from birth. In addition to the known roles of the microbiote in digestion, it is now recognized as an important contributor to human metabolism. Among the 10¹³ bacteria inhabiting the human gut, the genus Bacteroides comprises the dominant genus, and is needed to digest complex dietary polysaccharide fibers. This feature, and the resistance to trace oxygen of these Gram-negative anaerobes make them particularly well adapted to the intestinal environment. Remarkably, although heme is a required metabolite for Bacteroides growth, these bacteria are incapable of heme synthesis. Heme, which comprises an iron atom trapped within a porphyrin ring, is a cofactor involved in numerous enzymatic reactions essential to central metabolism. Its bioactivity may also provoke intestinal inflammatory phenomena. We investigated the interactions between the bacterium Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron and environmental heme. We first developed a test to detect nanogram amounts of heme in complex media such as intestinal contents. We then showed that the commensal bacterium Escherichia coli donates heme to B. thetaiotaomicron in vitro. Nevertheless, we found that E. coli is not the major heme source for Bacteroides colonization, as tested in a germfree mouse model. This study led us to conclude that the host must be the major heme donor. We then set up a system to modulate heme availability in the digestive tract by capturing free heme on a hemophore HasA, from Serratia marcescens. We confirmed the HasA system was active in vitro. Preliminary experiments indicate that it 1- reduces levels of intestinal heme, and 2- delays B. thetaiotaomicron colonization. The present work provides tools for better understanding the factors needed for Bacteroides implantation in the gut and underlines the importance of heme in this crucial process of primocolonization. In the longer term, the bacterial heme-capture system may be considered as a means of decreasing free intestinal pools of heme and thereby its pro-inflammatory effect, in chronic inflammatory bowel diseases.

[en] ROLEPLAYING AND TRANSGRESSION IN EÇA DE QUEIRÓS: A READING OF O PRIMO BASÍLIO AND OS MAIAS / [pt] ENCENAÇÕES E TRANSGRESSÕES EM EÇA DE QUEIRÓS: UMA LEITURA DE O PRIMO BASÍLIO E OS MAIAS

MARIANA MONTENEGRO DE CARVALHO REGO 06 October 2005 (has links)
[en] Eça de Queirós aimed to improve the morals of Portuguese society through a sort of literature that was to function as a mirror reflecting the Portuguese way of life in the latter half of the 19th century. Thus the author portrayed Portugal as a society based on role-playing, following certain preestablished rules. Luísa and Juliana, in O Primo Basílio, Pedro da Maia, Maria Monforte, Carlos Eduardo and Maria Eduarda, in Os Maias, are characters who engage in transgression, deviating from what was considered moral. In this thesis we investigate the reasons that led to transgression of social rules, as well as the possible consequences of such deviant behavior.

Costa i Fernàndez, Lluís, 1959- 15 March 1994 (has links)
There is a marked trend in the historical world to present the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera as a monolithic and uniform political system, with a single speech, barely cracks. The central hypothesis of our research is based on the idea that the reality was very different because in the same directory substantially different approach coexisted, which caused serious disagreements within the regime. We attempt to demonstrate the above hypothesis on the basis of the analysis of a very important specific aspect of the dictatorship that makes reference to the purpose of Primo de Rivera, failed in our opinion, to substantiate much of its political project in developping an intense propaganda, that was supposed to transmit a good image of the regime and to instill ideology. The geographical area investigated is Girona region, where three crucial converging factors help to explain the failure of the project Primo de Rivera. The first one, more general, but also verifiable in the Girona area, is the dictator's press polici, which is characterized by its short definition and its terrible application. The two following, more specific, impact on the existence of different ways of understanding the State reform within primoriverism, and the localist infighting between ambitious factions eager for power.

Le témoignage comme genre littéraire en France de 1914 à nos jours / Testimonies as a Literary Genre In France From 1914 to today

Lacoste, Charlotte 02 December 2011 (has links)
Books of a new kind appeared out of the total wars and genocides of the twentieth century – testimonies. They are written by male and female survivors of extreme political violence, who, taking on the role of witnesses, decided to share their experiences with others by writing of the suffering they had undergone. Their mission consists in testifying what they saw and experienced, paying tribute to those who did not survive, questioning the mechanisms which led to mass murder, and opposing to the attempts to destroy human beings and their culture a reflection about living together and the ever-present possibility of the most fundamental social relationships falling apart. The corpus left by these witnesses is the object of study of this PhD dissertation, which has two aims: to describe, based on a close reading of the texts, partially aided by the tools of textometric analysis, the main characteristics of the genre, and to create the basis of a history of testimonies and their public and critical reception, using accounts which reveal such diverse experiences as trench warfare during the World War One, the concentration camps of the Nazi regime, and colonial violence in Algeria. In order to understand the generic specificity of these texts going beyond the diversity of the works and the events they proceed, it is necessary to define the underlying common project which forms a tradition, given that a genre is not defined according to unchanging ontological criteria. It appears in precise socio-historical circumstances, and is situated at a level of semiotic interference which justifies this dual philological and historical approach.

FRBRizace katalogů a databází - situace v zahraničí / FRBRization of catalogs and databases - the situation abroad

Lísková, Marie January 2017 (has links)
(in English): The diploma thesis deals with the conceptual model functional requirements for bibliographic records and its implementation or FRBRisation of library information systems abroad. The introduction of the thesis presents in brief the FRBR conceptual model and its family. The second chapter discusses the development of FRBRisation activities since the creation of the FRBR study to the present. The third chapter presents a more detailed description of the FRBRisation process and presents the benefits and challenges of these projects. In connection with this, the impact on cataloging standards and data structures is also mentioned, as well as the currently debated issue concerning the possible ways of presenting the FRBRised data. The last chapter of the diploma thesis contains analysis and comparison of two selected FRBRised systems (BORéAL union catalog and Primo discovery system), with emphasis on the means and scope of FRBR implementation and user interface.
