Successful information literacy through librarian-lecturer collaboration

<p>&nbsp / This study supports the need for information literacy training for first year or new incoming Community and Health Science (CHS) students at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and describes the use of a collaborative framework for integrating information literacy into the undergraduate studentsʹ curriculum and for assessing the results. The Collaborative Information Literacy Model (CILM) provided the guidelines for a more structured and fuller collaboration between the librarian and the lecturer responsible for the first year Physiotherapy students. The collaborative partnership employed strategies to teach information literacy competencies which were significantly more satisfactory with the studentsʹ abilities to successfully complete a research term paper. The process of integration began with developing learning outcomes, an information literacy program, exercises and an assessment instrument for evaluating student performance. Also emphasized is the on-going exchange of expertise between the librarian and the lecturer to enhance library-related components in the design of the program.</p>

Additionaly, it has as scope conceptualising it colaborating with all those who works with disciplinary administrative procedures to rationalise the development of activities. The proposed textbook provides concepts, methods and tools to rise the quality of the activities. The submitting proposal is focused at Rondônia local Judiciary and is objective and instrumental, permitting to aggregate efficiency at the disciplinary administrative procedures adding planning and administration techiniques to the juridical and law procedure knowledge. / A partir da análise do levantamento de dados e dos problemas verificados em processos administrativos disciplinares no âmbito do Tribunal de Justiça do Estado de Rondônia, tendo como pressuposto básico a necessidade de se impor celeridade e eficiência em sua tramitação, esta dissertação apresenta uma proposta de manual de processos administrativos disciplinares que viabilize a ordenação e controle das atividades procedimentais e que possibilite qualificar conceitos, colaborando com todos aqueles que atuam no campo disciplinar, aperfeiçoamento e racionalizando as atividades desenvolvidas. O modelo de manual proposto proporciona um conjunto de conceitos, métodos e ferramentas que objetivam melhorar a qualidade das atividades desempenhadas. A proposta trazida nesta dissertação está focada para o âmbito do TJRO e é objetiva, prática e instrumental, permitindo que se agregue eficiência na condução dos processos administrativos disciplinares, agregando ainda planejamento e gestão, além de conhecimento jurídico e processual sobre o tema disciplinar.

No. of bitstreams: 0 / O uso intensivo da tecnologia nuclear contribuiu para o aumento das preocupações com as questões ambientais e sua segurança, acabando por despertar o interesse em toda sociedade. No Brasil, as atividades nucleares são regulamentadas pelo Conselho Nacional do Meio Ambiente (CONAMA). A primeira resolução CONAMA, no 001/1986, estabeleceu que as atividades nucleares deveriam ser licenciadas pela agência ambiental brasileira, ou seja, pelo Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Renováveis (IBAMA), independentemente da obrigatoriedade do licenciamento pela Comissão Nacional de Energia Nuclear (CNEN). No licenciamento é preciso elaborar o Estudo de Impacto Ambiental (EIA), um conjunto de estudos realizados por especialistas de diversas áreas, com dados técnicos detalhados, e o Relatório de Impacto Ambiental (RIMA), que deve apresentar as conclusões do EIA de forma objetiva e adequado à sua compreensão. O principal mecanismo de participação direta da população na proteção da qualidade ambiental é a audiência pública. Ela tem como finalidade expor ao público as características do projeto e o conteúdo do EIA/RIMA. Durante a audiência pública os participantes podem fazer perguntas sobre o empreendimento e tirar dúvidas sobre como se dará o licenciamento. As audiências públicas são organizadas pelos empreendedores, consoante diretrizes emitidas pelo IBAMA. Implementation of 0.23 T magnetic resonance scanner to perioperative imaging in neurosurgery

Abstract The purpose of the present study was to implement a unique low-field open magnetic resonance scanner for perioperative imaging in neurosurgery. A paradigm was created for joint intraoperative/interventional MRI, including premises, surgical practice and an operational model. The feasibility of the paradigm was tested in clinical work. The joint use of the facilities between the Departments of Neurosurgery and Diagnostic Radiology was found to enhance the economic rationale and provide for perioperative imaging. It was also found to be organizationally viable in the long run. Intraoperative MRI was implemented and studied in connection with neuronavigation and other intraoperative instruments, tools and imaging modalities. The unique shut down possibility of the magnet enabled staged operating-imaging practice, use of non-MRI-compatible instruments and devices, multimodal imaging with navigation, and avoidance of safety risks associated with operating in magnetic fringe fields. Two dynamic contrast enhanced MR imaging sequences, which used undersampled projection reconstruction, were implemented in the low-field scanner. The applicability of these imaging sequences to follow contrast enhancement of meningiomas was studied in laboratory experiments and in two patient cases. The laboratory experiments showed a nearly linear response in signal intensity to the concentration of gadopentetate dimeglumine in purified water up to 1.25 mM. The patient cases showed results consistent with an earlier study performed at high-field strength. The potential of low-field MRI study including dynamic contrast enhanced imaging to predict surgical and histopathologic characteristics of meningiomas was studied in a series of 21 patients. Dynamic contrast enhanced imaging could be used to evaluate microvessel densities of meningiomas. Surgical bleeding, blood loss during operation, progesterone receptor expression and collagen content were statistically best correlated to the relative intensity of meningioma on FLAIR images. Tissue hardness correlated best with relative intensity on T2-weighted images.

Successful information literacy through librarian-lecturer collaboration

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / This study supports the need for information literacy training for first year or new incoming Community and Health Science (CHS) students at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and describes the use of a collaborative framework for integrating information literacy into the undergraduate students' curriculum and for assessing the results. The Collaborative Information Literacy Model (CILM) provided the guidelines for a more structured and fuller collaboration between the librarian and the lecturer responsible for the first year Physiotherapy students. The collaborative partnership employed strategies to teach information literacy competencies which were significantly more satisfactory with the students' abilities to successfully complete a research term paper. The process of integration began with developing learning outcomes, an information literacy program, exercises and an assessment instrument for evaluating student performance. Also emphasized is the on-going exchange of expertise between the librarian and the lecturer to enhance library-related components in the design of the program. / South Africa

The knowledge and attitude of pediatricians regarding the diagnosis and intervention of infants and children with a sensorineural hearing loss

The pediatric audiology landscape changed dramatically with the advances in screening and diagnostic procedures, amplification possibilities and early identification outcomes. Pediatricians play a key role in this rapidly developing field. The aim of this study was to investigate Pediatricians’ knowledge and attitudes regarding the diagnosis and intervention of infants and children with a sensorineural hearing loss. A questionnaire was compiled to obtain the relevant empirical data. This was distributed to 257 pediatricians in the Gauteng Province. Of the 257 questionnaires only 47 could be utilised. According to the results obtained from the pediatricians it appears that the respondents possess adequate knowledge regarding the diagnosis and intervention of infants and children with sensorineural hearing loss. This is despite having received limited or no information and training on this subject. As is discussed in Chapter 4 it became evident that knowledge gaps were found to exist. The pediatrician is an important team member of the hearing intervention team. Their involvement is crucial and their referral can be the important stepping-stone for early identification and intervention. A lack of skills and proficient knowledge is a major constraint during the implementation of efficient primary health care services in developing countries. Throughout the results of this study, it is found that pediatricians have a need for additional information and training in the intervention process of infants and children with sensorineural hearing loss, therefore showing a positive attitude towards continuous education. This is based on the results found throughout the study, in terms of a void in certain areas surrounding effective intervention of hearing loss. The aim of the study was to highlight areas of uncertainty that the respondents might experience and to provide educational programmes in order to equip them with the relevant knowledge with regards to sensorineural hearing loss. In this study the researcher developed a training programme for state prosecutors to address re-victimization of the sexually abused child during forensic procedures. The study commenced with a literature study focusing on the following aspects: <ul> <li>Person-centred approach as scientific foundation for the work with sexually abused children during forensic procedures.</li> <li>Sexual abuse and the long-term effects thereof.</li> <li>Addressing re-victimization of the sexually abused child during forensic procedures.</li> After finalizing the literature study, the researcher did the empirical study, which was a combined qualitative-quantitative study. The researcher started with the qualitative study, where prosecutors dealing with sexual abuse cases were interviewed to determine their training needs. After their training needs were determined a training programme was compiled. This training programme formed part of the quantitative study and was implemented during a training session for prosecutors at the Justice College in Pretoria. This research comprises a comparative examination of the transformation of Afrikaans and Dutch youth narratives into drama texts. Attention has been paid to the story elements embodied in various narratives and dramas, and, in addition, to aspects related to narrative and drama. By means of the comparison of the constants and variants with regard to the four texts, the possibility of creating a transformation model has been examined. The transformation model derived from the research, is applicable, firstly, to the narratives and drama texts upon which this study has been based. It is therefore presented as a conception for the conversion of a narrative text into a drama text, but the uniqueness of each separate narrative is taken into consideration; hence the model is not prescriptive, and it is assumed that the model may be adjusted in line with each adaptation. The comparison is effected between Afrikaans and Dutch texts, in view of the existence in the Low Countries of an established culture of bookshops, publishers and theatrical companies, focused on youth literature and theatre. Some publishers and bookshops, moreover, exclusively publish and sell youth narratives and dramas. Theatre productions aimed at children and young adults are plentiful, and attract a large percentage of young people. Should the fact that some theatres specialise in youth theatre productions be taken into account, also, the contrast and the gaps pertaining to the Afrikaans literary system are marked. The research in respect of the transformation of prose texts into drama texts has identified those procedures employed to adapt the narrative aspects (narrator, focalization, character, event, time and space) in such a way that it is reconcilable with the unique nature of the dramatic aspects (didascalia, dialogue, character, action, time and space).
