No. of bitstreams: 1 Marcelo Jose Oliveira de Farias.pdf: 18331005 bytes, checksum: e300bf7bd1aa496423a3d27c6d7fdab2 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-12-11 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / The communicational function that industrial products have through non-verbal language determines the interest process which may have a functional or emotional point of view from the observer. Besides a technical and creative feature, design is also responsible for the configuration of products. Design means a signification process from the organization of signals in a structure made of codes which characterizes the language and the message of a product. The language system is necessary for design so that this communication between the observer and the message of the product will be established. From this perspective, can we consider the visual techniques used in the creation process, such as conceptual or semantic panels, responsible to determine the language and message of industrial products? From the fundamental question of the object of study, other questions come up and certainly help the basis necessary to limit this research. (1) How are the signal systems, which form the design language of the product, constructed and organized? (2) Which rules guide the definition of this language in the creation process? And (3) Which are the communicational dynamics set from the visual and semantic panels? This study, thus, is based on the analysis of conceptual and semantic panels developed in the creation process of three industrial design offices: Domus Design, Questto|Nó and Design Connection. In this piece of work the creation process is taken as intellectual and sensitive, described as a fallible process with tendency, sustained by the uncertainty logics and involving random intervention. It also opens up for the introduction of new ideas. The theoretical basis of this research is oriented by the process criticism developed by PhD Cecília Salles, which merges with a theoretical board of design represented by Bernhard Burdek, Gui Bonsiepe, Mike Baxtere Rafael Cardoso, as well as communication and semiotics field by Edgar Morin, Lucia Leão,Lucrécia Ferrara and Santaella / A função comunicacional que os produtos industriais exercem através de uma linguagem não verbal é um dos fatores determinantes no processo de interesse, seja de caráter funcional ou emocional, do sujeito observador em relação a estes.

Percepções dos usuários a respeito do material plástico aplicado ao design de produtos / Users \' perceptions about the plastic material applied to product design

Mira, Maria do Rosário Gonçalves 03 February 2016 (has links)
This qualitative and phenomenological study aimed to identify aspects of the perception regarding personal and/or household objects made with plastic. The study foscused especially on the the viewpoints of consumers, designers, retailers, and theoretical experts from the city of São Paulo. This study was conducted due to the importance and prevalence of plastic in product design, how it can replace other materials, its multiple capabilities, the different ways in which it can be applied and presented, and its presence in the daily lives of consumers. This study further aimed to broaden knowledges of what meaning consumers assign to plastic. Field research was based on qualitative methodology using in-depht semi-structured interviews conducted with a larger number of consumers, designers, theoretical experts (partcularly in the fields of semantics, aesthetics, anthropology, and design theory), and retailers. The interviews were carried out in consumers\' homes, work places, and stores. This study also included na extensive literature review in the field of design, product semantics, and experiences with products and materials. Some of the results suggest, for instance, plastic is perceived in multiple stratified ways according to users\' backgrounds. The perception also changes according to many factors and depending on the context. Thus, each subject showed different levels of abstraction for plastic as a reflection of their inherent cultural backgrounds. In this context, results analysis reveals clear differences in understanding, complexity and levels of abstraction between consumers of plastic products.

Utveckling av fäste och skyltar för bakrutetorkare på personbilar / Development of a mount and signs for rear window wipers on cars

Johansson, Gustav, Karlsson, Emelie January 2019 (has links)
This thesis discloses a bachelor degree project in Product Design Engineering at the University of Skövde. The project was performed in collaboration with a company called The Best of Sweden AB where the assignment was to develop a universal mount and signs for rear window wipers on cars. The development process started with a prestudy where customer needs where analyzed. Different factors which affect the product in the environment of use, such as the aerodynamics of cars and the force in the rear window wiper engine, were examined as well during the prestudy. A field study was carried out on existing rear window wipers which became the basis of the dimensions of the signs as well as the mount. The result of the pilot study ended in a list of requirements that the final concept was to be compared to. Different structured design methods was used during concept generation as well as concept evaluation which was followed by a development of the details of the final concept. A proposition of material selection and manufacturing method was determined as well as an estimation of manufacturing cost. The result was a fastening device and signs for rear window wipers on cars which makes it possible for the user to mount personalized signs if various different formats. The fastening device consists of a base mount and a strap, where the strap is tightened around the rear window wiper and keeps the base mount in place. The symmetry of the product enables it to be mounted to a rear window wiper that either rotates clockwise or counter-clockwise.

Designing for the Internet of Things : models and principles for application-augmented products.

Thebault, Pierrick 31 May 2013 (has links)
The Internet of Things, whose underlying vision and technologies aim at bridging the physical and digital worlds together, lead to the creation of new types of applications coupling Web services with everyday products. Such product-oriented applications, which enable the functional exposition, control or enhancement of artifacts that embed information processing capabilities, question the established design principles and conventions. They open up the possibility for Internet-enabled products, whose functions can be “augmented” and adapted to better support users' changing needs, to be designed. This research, which is at the intersection of Design Science, Ubiquitous Computing and Human-Computer Interactions, aims at studying the impact brought about by applications on product design. It highlights the need to build an application model that facilitates their representation by users, and to explore the pragmatic issues rose by their integration into products. It leads to the definition and evaluation, through practice, of principles for the design of augmented products' form and interactions. It describes the ductility of future products, the novel coupling between functions, behavior and structure they implement and their potential evolutions. This work contributes to the Internet of Things research by reframing the discussion and by providing researchers and practitioners with tools that can be leveraged during the design process.

EXPLORING ILLUSIONS OF HEIGHT IN SUIT DESIGN

Lee, Michael P. 01 January 2018 (has links)
Objective: The goal of this research was to explore how the design of clothing, specifically the design of the suit, can create height illusions. Background: Taller people enjoy many advantages, such as increased income and perceived attractiveness. These advantages motivate people to try to appear taller than they actually are, and clothing experts provide advice on how to accomplish this. However, there is little empirical evidence to validate the illusory effects clothing might have on overall height perception. The few studies that have explored illusions of body size created by clothing design have been limited in two important ways – the test stimuli have included unnatural body shapes and have failed to include naturalistic context (i.e., surrounding depth and size cues available in real scenes). Method: In the first phase, participants (nonexperts in clothing design) provided suggestions for how to appear taller by changing clothes. In the second phase, participants 1) viewed photographs of a variety of targets wearing suit designs that are commonly believed to manipulate viewers’ perceptions of height, 2) rated the targets on traits associated with height such as income and attractiveness, and 3) estimated the heights of these individuals. This study focused on the potential effects of suit color, specifically overall lightness (light vs. dark) and monochromaticity (monochromatic vs. lightness blocking). The effects of these designs were tested with and without contextual information by presenting targets within a natural streetscape or on a white background. Results: In the first phase, we found that nonexperts provided similar suggestions as experts in clothing design, including those pertaining to monochromaticity and lightness. In the second phase, we found that estimates were more accurate with more contextual information, and that clothing can impact height estimations, where monochromatic outfits yielded taller height estimates, although other outfit comparisons did not have effects. Outfits overall did not impact ratings such as income and attractiveness, although estimated height did correlate with these same social attributes. In an exploration of the impact of contextual and target-specific cues other than clothing on height estimations, we found that height perception was potentially dependent on a variety of factors such as the target's race, location (indoors vs. outdoors), stance, and the presence of nearby people. Scientific merit: This study increased our understanding of the conditions under which illusions of size in simple geometric stimuli generalize to the manipulation of size perception in real-world scenes. Broader impact: A better understanding of biases in height perception is relevant to domains in which such estimates are used to identify individuals (e.g., criminal justice) as well as domains in which visual characteristics of individuals are associated with errors in judgments of performance-based merit. (e.g., personnel selection and promotion).

MY CLOTHING IS ME: Embracing ADHD in Traditional Qatari Apparel

Abdulla, Rabab 01 January 2019 (has links)
Children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) are often secluded from society, as the condition is perceived to be a defect. These children constantly fidget, move, lose track of time, and forget to complete tasks, leading them to struggle within existing social environments. Additionally, in Qatar there is a need to educate society about ADHD. This research explores wearable solutions that alter behaviors through physical interactions and sensory engagements. In response to the challenges faced by ADHD, Qatari traditional attire has been customized to support children with time management, and communication between child, parent, and society. Additionally, these wearables challenge Qatari perspectives surrounding existing health conditions in Qatar. Design outcomes consists of clothing elements, driven and shaped by the experiences of ADHD children, their physical behavior, their senses like touch, smell and sight. It addresses the daily conduct of the ADHD child, and the relationship of the child and parent. By challenging existing norms and analyzing the Qatari traditional clothing (the Thobe, the Abaya and the Prayer Bead), design outcomes have been realized by experimenting and playing with materials, prototyping and 3D printing on fabric. Existing functions of zippers, pockets, beads, cuffs and technical construction of the outfit have been redesigned and reconstructed.

NEOS Office Workstation 2007 : Daifukudesigns, Barcelona / Produktdesign : Design

Axelsson, Mikael, Joelsson, David, Åkman, Karl January 2008 (has links)
<p>The project consisted of developing an office workstation specially designed to compete at the Spanish market. The assignment was received from the Daifuku Designs, a design company in Barcelona, Spain. Daifuku Designs are well experienced in various kinds of product and interior design, but has not designed office furniture earlier. The project’s purpose was to introduce the company to the branch of office furniture.</p><p>The research phase consisted in three different parts, a survey concerning office work that was handed out to Swedish and Spanish office workers and cleaning staff, studies of the world leading companies in the branch of office furniture and educational visits at different showrooms and offices.</p><p>The project resulted in a desk that is offering a flexible space dividing system and a unique cord solution. The space dividers can be put anywhere along the desktop and are easily moved by hand. All the cords and cables are hidden in the desk and computers, phones, e.g. can be installed anywhere on the desk. The desk can be used both separately and in big office landscape. Flexibility is a common sales argument and the demand of this kind of flexibility is constantly growing. The trends to hire personnel and to work in temporary project groups are two reasons to the growing demand. The office furniture needs to be able to be used in different ways when the constellation of the project group is changing. It is a big advantage if the same desks can be used for different occasions.</p> / <p>Projektet bestod av att utveckla ett kontorsskrivbord, designat för att marknadsföras på den spanska marknaden.
