The Experience of Undergraduate Family Science Female Students: A Qualitative Study

As female students have traditionally been underrepresented in a number of academic disciplines (e.g., Hernandez et al., 2017), and because female students have often encountered obstacles in persisting in their preferred fields of study (e.g., Hughes, 2012), it's important to elevate female voices and learn how to better support them in academia. In order to pursue this, original qualitative research was conducted to better understand the academic experience of undergraduate female students pursuing a degree in an CFLE approved family science program. As part of this presentation, participants will learn about the female undergraduate experience and what obstacles they often encounter. Specifically, from the results of this study, participants will learn about female students' desires to be challenged and to have diverse perspectives included in the classroom, and also about the stigma they often experience due to their chosen field of study. Implications for programs and professions will be discussed.

Sedan flera år tillbaka har kvinnor inte haft samma förutsättningar inom polisbranschen som män, däremot har polisyrket på senare år blivit mer jämställt. Allt fler kvinnor kommer in i branschen och arbetar i yttre tjänst. Av denna anledning har samhällets förväntningar på polisyrket förändrats och utvecklats - men än idag finns särskilda förväntningar på poliskvinnor. Syftet med denna studie är att belysa hur kvinnliga poliser i yttre tjänst skapar och formar en yrkesroll och professionell identitet i förhållande till polismyndighetens traditionellt sett maskulina arbetsplatsnormer. Denna kvalitativa studie har genomfört 10 semistrukturerade intervjuer av kvinnliga poliser som arbetar i yttre tjänst i Sverige. Med ett socialpsykologiskt perspektiv har detta arbete en utgångspunkt i teorier som berör normativt beteende, rolltagande, traditionella könsroller och identitetsskapande. Studien resulterade i att poliskvinnor formar en professionell identitet i förhållande till arbetsplatsen och dess arbetsplatsnormer, och även i förhållande till samhällets förväntningar på yrkesrollen. Kvinnliga poliser har en yrkesroll som utstrålar trygghet och medför lugn, vilket återspeglar ett emotionellt arbete. Detta bidrar till att poliskvinnor har ett stort socialt ansvar när de arbetar och förväntas vara omhändertagande / For several years, women have not had the same conditions in the police force as men, but in recent years the police profession has become more equal. More and more women are entering the industry and working in external service. For this reason, society's expectations of the police profession have changed and developed - but even today there are special expectations of police women. The aim of this study is to analyze how female police officers in external service create and shape a professional role and professional identity in relation to the police force’s traditionally masculine workplace norms. This qualitative study has conducted 10 semi-structured interviews of female police officers working in external service in Sweden. From a social psychological perspective, this work is based on theories that concern normative behavior, role-playing, traditional gender roles and identity creation. The study resulted in police women forming a professional identity in relation to the workplace and its workplace norms, and also in relation to society's expectations of the professional role. Female police officers have a professional role that radiates security and brings calm, which reflects an emotional work. This contributes to police women having a great social responsibility when they work and that they are expected to be caring.

The diploma thesis deals with selected issues of self-concept of a primary school teacher. The theoretical part deals mainly with the issue of concepts related to self-concept and their clarification. The empirical part had the task of tracing important moments, people and phases leading to the formation of attitudes and ideas of what teachers have about themselves. During professional development, the construction of teachers' identity and self-confidence was crucial. The survey was qualitatively oriented and carried out through the analysis of the life history of teachers. By open coding, the narration of the respondents was divided into 5 main categories. The research of life stories led to expected and surprising findings and resulted in a draft recommendation for undergraduate teachers' training. Ett yrkesliv inom hotell och restaurang : En kvalitativ studie om arbetet, kulturen och gemenskapen / A professional life in the hotel and restaurant industry : A qualitative study of work, culture, and community

The purpose of this study is to understand and describe the meaning of employees’ work experiences of professional socialization in hotel and restaurants, and further describe the professional life that is created within the industry. Previous research shows that the industry consists mainly of young workers while those over 50 are few, which indicates that both young and old workers leave the industry. The gender distribution for the whole industry is even, but a closer look shows that kitchens are male dominated while the service-oriented professions are female-dominated. This contributes to the industry facing several challenges such as high staff turnover and sexual harassments. Based on this, there is a reason to further explore their professional life. Professional life is used as an umbrella term for the theoretical concepts: career, professional socialization, professional culture, professional identity, age, and gender. The results are based on 13 interviews with reception, serving and kitchen staff between the ages of 20-45. The result shows that the professional culture includes a harsh, and sexist jargon. Through the professional socialization, the employees must adapt and accept the culture by proving their willingness to a long-term career, participate in the jargon and create mutual relationships built on trust and respect. Employees are aware of the difficulty of ageing in the industry and therefore they start planning early in their careers for how to reduce the active work as they get older. Gender and age mainly affect women who need to adapt and accept the sexist jargon that can lead to discrimination. One of the conclusions are that an important part of professional socialization is to differentiate oneself from employees who see their work as a transitional profession and accept the tough professional culture. This, together with the impact that age and gender have, is significant for their professional identity and willingness to create a long-term professional life.

Professional Identity Development: Perceptions of African American Female Counselor Educators' Success in Ph.D. Completion at Predominately White Institutions

Qualitative research is scant on success factors of professional identity development for female African American counselor educators, specifically those who graduated from CACREP-accredited counselor education and supervision programs at predominately White institutions (PWIs). The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the lived experiences of female African American counselor educators who attended a CACREP-accredited counselor education and supervision program at a (PWI). This study focused on the phenomenon of success factors of professional identity development to doctoral degree completion. This study examined the lived experiences of 10 female African American counselor educators to gain a better understanding of how their experiences at CACREP-accredited counselor educations and supervision programs at a (PWI) impacted success of professional identity development to doctoral degree completion. It used a qualitative, phenomenological methodology grounded in Intersectionality theory, Black Feminist thought, and Critical Race theory as frameworks. There were three research questions to guide the study in the participants? perceptions of professional identity development and the impact of success factors of professional identity development on doctoral degree completion. This study conducted semi-structured interviews with ten female African American counselor educators who completed doctoral degrees in (PWIs) in the United States. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Moustakas (1994) Modification of Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen data analysis. The goals of this study was to: a) review and present literature on female African American in the academy; b) increase knowledge on professional identity among female African American counselor educators who attended a CACREP -accredited counselor education and supervision program at (PWIs) in the United States; and c) explore ways to increase professional identity development to support female African American doctoral students to complete their doctoral degree and move into counselor education positions. Ten African American females who graduated from CACREP-accredited counselor education and supervision programs were interviewed. There were six themes: Convenience of the Location, Importance of support from Dissertation chair, Representation of African American women with PhDs in the community, I was needed and access, Being a Black woman in that space and Voice, Faith-based community and I prayed. Recommendations and directions for future research are discussed.

A Foucauldian Archaeology of Modern Medical Discourse

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Medical education researchers have long been interested in understanding medical professional identity formation and its implications for the healthcare system. Various theories have been proposed to explain identity formation. Among them, Foucault’s discourse theory maintains that it is the discourse of medicine that constitutes medical professional identities. This study deployed a Foucauldian archaeological methodology to analyze the structure of modern medical discourse and establish links between discourse and professional identity formation in medical students. A total of forty-six medical students at Indiana University School of Medicine participated in either individual or focus group interviews. Direct observation of the clinical and educational settings was also performed, which resulted in additional textual data in the form of fieldnotes. Archaeological analysis of discourse was undertaken in three levels of the statements, the discursive elements, and the discursive rules and relations. Results entailed a detailed depiction of the structure of medical discourse including discursive objects and modes of enunciation, discursive concepts, and theoretical strategies related to each object. Discursive objects are things that are talked about in modern medical discourse. This study identified four discursive objects as disease and treatment, the doctor, the human body, and the sick person. Modes of enunciation are the different ways in which people talk about objects of medicine, whereas concepts consist of the notions people draw from when talking about objects of medicine. Theoretical strategies indicate certain positions that people take in relation to the objects of medicine. Rules of formation and conditions of existence for each discursive element were also established. Since Identities are entrenched through language and interaction, developing a systematic understanding of the structure of medical discourse will shed new light on medical professional identity formation. Results of this study also have profound implications for teaching professionalism and medical humanities in medical curricula. Furthermore, as a research methodology used for the first time in medical education, archaeology not only opens new territories to be explored by future research, it also provides an entirely new way to look at them.

This master's thesis is about the professional crisis of Czech journalists and the causes of the crisis. The thesis is based on the theory of Pierre Bourdieu, who defined the journalistic field, which is influenced by other fields especially the economic one and political one. The thesis is also based on journalism as a profession from an idealistic point of view. The goal of the thesis was to find out how is real journalism different from the idealistic point of view. The part of the work is also qualitative research based on interviews with eight journalists. This research showed many causes and consequences of the crises. The results are that the requirements of the profession are the same, but the conditions are different. The causes are for example financial stringency, unclear rules, quick news, social media, and ownership of the media. And the consequences are that the content of media is oriented on the reader, mistrust in media, media are based on opinion, young journalists are leaving, getting rid of responsibility, shorter news, mistakes, too much information and lower quality of news. These consequences lead to the crisis of journalism.

Flexibilitetens konsekvenser : En intervjustudie om tillfälliga anställningar och dess påverkan på svenska journalister

The media industry has been evolving for several hundred years and this change is still ongoing today, and with it the forms of employment in journalism have also changed. There has been an increase in staffing companies and temporary employment within the flexible labor market. Within the Swedish journalism industry, temporary employment has increased, especially among journalists under the age of 35, where over half do not have permanent employment. The purpose of the essay is to investigate whether temporary forms of employment affect Swedish journalists and whether they feel that such forms of employment affect the journalism they produce. Using John Atkinson's (1984) economic theory of the flexible market and Mark Deuze's (2005) theory of journalism's professional ideology, the results of the study are analyzed and interpreted. The material consists of 14 qualitative interviews with people who work or have worked as journalists and have experience in temporary forms of employment. The results show that the respondents experience stress and worry about finances and career as a direct consequence of the form of employment. The results show that the respondents do not feel that the employment in itself leads to them producing lower quality journalism. However, temporary employment gives them less time to devote to thinking about their professional role and trying to live up to the professional ideals they themselves have. The study indicates that temporary employment within the journalistic field causes stress and insecurity, which in turn can lead to a weaker professional identity.

Bakgrund: Revisorsprofessionen har under senare år präglats av ökade kompetenskrav, där Revisorsinspektionen har försökt att framkalla en bredare kompetensbas genom att lätta på revisorernas utbildningskrav. En profession som utsätts för förändringar kan riskera att deprofessionaliseras genom att förlora utmärkande kännetecken, förtroende, auktoritet, kompetens och status. Det väcker ett intresse av att studera vilket avtryck som förändrade utbildnings- och kompetenskrav har lämnat på revisorsprofessionen. Syfte: Uppsatsens syfte är att bidra till en djupare förståelse för hur förändrade utbildningsoch kompetenskrav påverkar revisorer ur ett professionsteoretiskt perspektiv. Som en del av detta ingår att synliggöra hur revisorer upplever professionsidentiteten och har anpassat sig efter förändringen av professionen. Metod: Arbetet tillämpar en deduktiv forskningsansats med teoretisk utgångspunkt i professionsteori och professionsidentitet. Genom den teoretiska referensramen konstrueras en teoretisk modell som ligger till grund för utformandet av arbetets kvalitativa intervjustudie med auktoriserade och godkända revisorer. Slutsats: Studien visar att de nya utbildnings- och kompetenskrav på olika sätt har förändrat revisorsprofessionen. Revisorsprofessionen uppfyller fortfarande samtliga krav för att definieras som en profession. Kännetecknet specialiserad kunskap har däremot blivit mindre exklusivt, vilket kan liknas med en deprofessionalisering och statusförskjutning av dessa delar. Digitaliseringen och ökat kunskapsfokus upplevs å andra sidan skapa större förtroende för revisorn, samtidigt som arbetssättet beskrivs som mer homogent. De nya utbildningskraven upplevdes ännu inte ha haft inflytande på professionsidentiteten. Förändringarna har medfört att revisorsprofessionen snarare går från att utmärkas som en klassisk profession till att mer efterlikna en välfärdsprofession. Som följd föreligger uppfattningen om att revisorsprofessionen är under omdefiniering / Background: In recent years, the auditing profession has been characterized by increased competence requirements, where the Swedish Inspectorate of Auditors has attempted to create a broader knowledge base by easing the educational requirements for auditors. A profession that is subject to educational and competence requirement changes can risk deprofessionalization by losing distinctive characteristics, trust, authority, competence, and status. This raises an interest in studying the impact that changed education and competence requirements have had on the auditing profession. Purpose: The purpose of the essay is to contribute to a deeper understanding of how changing educational and competency requirements affect auditors from a professional theoretical perspective. As part of this, it involves highlighting how auditors experience professional identity and have adapted to the changes in the profession. Method: The essay applies a deductive research approach with a theoretical basis in professional theory and professional identity. Through the theoretical framework, a theoretical model is constructed that forms the basis for the design of the work's qualitative interview study with authorized and approved auditors. Conclusion: The results from the study shows that the new educational and competency requirements have changed the auditing profession. The profession still meets all the criteria to be defined as a profession. However, the characteristic of specialized knowledge has become less exclusive, which can be compared to a process of deprofessionalization and a shift in status. On the other hand, digitalization and increased focus on knowledge are perceived to create greater trust in auditors, while the work process is described as more homogeneous. The new educational requirements were not yet perceived to have influenced professional identity. The changes have led the auditing profession to move from being characterized as a classical profession to resembling more of a welfare profession. As a result, there is a perception that the auditing profession is undergoing a redefinition
