Profession and Place: Contesting Professional Boundaries at the MarginsThompson, Lee Ethne January 2006 (has links)
There is considerable concern regarding the adequacy of rural health services in New Zealand, with much attention having been paid to issues of recruitment and retention of rural general practitioners. Rhetoric of 'crisis' is often utilised to raise political awareness of the problematic, but in fact, rural general practitioner recruitment and retention has been documented for about a hundred years. For about the same length of time nurses have been providing primary health care services in rural and remote places, often working alone. Using the notion of nurses as a 'stop-gap' in the provision of rural primary health care until problems with recruitment and retention of rural general practitioners are addressed, is a rhetorical device that facilitates the under analysis of the role nurses play and the contribution that they make. The longstanding practice of rural primary care nursing in its various guises over the last century challenges the notion of nursing as a stop-gap.Any investigation of health care in the contemporary moment needs to take account of the influence of biomedical dominance, an increasingly litigious mentality in relation to health care, a shifting focus towards primary rather than secondary health care, and the positioning and re-positioning of health professionals within the neo-liberal state. The very existence of nurses working as the first point of contact in the health care system, with success over time in so far as they do not provoke undue litigation, and appear to deliver an appropriate service must raise questions about who can claim the right to be a primary health care provider. Based on qualitative research conducted in New Zealand and the Western Isles with rural primary care nurses and Family Health Nurses respectively, this thesis explores the ways that nurses construct flexible generalist professional identities that challenge traditional inter and intra-professional boundaries. In the New Zealand case, rural primary care nurses negotiate the boundaries between nursing and medicine, those within nursing itself, and also those between nursing a paramedic work. Nurses perform this boundary work by negotiating self-governing 'appropriate' and 'safe' professional identities. In the Western Isles case, the introduction of the newly developed role of Family Health Nurse serves to highlight the problematic nature of inserting an ostensibly generalist nursing role beyond the rural.

Children Exposed to Severe and Homicidal Violence : Professinals Revealing Their Insufficient Societal StatusEriksson, Malin January 2014 (has links)
Violence-exposed children are unintended victims, often an unseen and overlooked victim group in society. It is a societal responsibility that all victims are realized and supported. Through describing the perspective of professionals meeting these children, their status and opportunities in society and legal system can be investigated. To study professionals’ experiences, conceptions, and knowledge about violence-exposed children, a questionnaire was distributed to 63 professionals, representing police, prosecutors, social- and treatment personnel. Qualitative questions about experiences and knowledge were analysed thematically. Additional quantitative statements of held conceptions were analysed with t-tests and regression methods. Findings revealed these children are still overlooked; psychological knowledge about their symptoms, testimonies, and perspective is lacking; professional routines/guidelines are missing; and problems such as children’s legal status as non-victims are hindering effective work to guarantee these children’s care. Results provide information facilitating necessary changes to ensure this group of psychologically abused victims’ recovery and societal rights.

Managerial coaching and staff nurse perceptions of work environment, professional work satisfaction, job satisfaction, and intent to stayBatson, Vicki Delahorne 23 October 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this prospective, descriptive, cross-sectional, correlational study was to explore the relationship between staff nurses' perceptions of first line manager coaching behaviors and nursing work environment characteristics, professional work satisfaction, job satisfaction, and intent to stay. Staff nurses perceived managers as engaging in certain coaching behaviors more frequently than others. Behaviors that established a mutually trusting and supportive relationship were reported as the most frequently occurring behaviors. Behaviors that supported the development of a mutually trusting and respectful relationship were reported as the most frequently occuring behaviors. Behaviors that supported one-on-one interactions focusing on individual development occurred less frequently. Managerial coaching behaviors were positively correlated with eight work environment characteristics which comprise professional work satisfaction, with medium to large effect sizes noted. Coaching behaviors also demonstrated positive relationships with job satisfaction and intent to stay. Correlational analyses and regression analyses illuminated the relationships between the variables. Mediation analysis of managerial coaching and the eight work environment characteristics defining professional work satisfaction provided more complete understanding of the relationship in prediction of intent to stay. The eight characteristics acted as either total or partial mediators of managerial coaching when predicting intent to stay. Demographic characteristics, managerial coaching and professional work satisfaction explained 41.4% of the variance in job satisfaction. Demographic characteristics, managerial coaching, professional work satisfaction, and job satisfaction explained 37% of the variance in intent to stay. / text

Previous issue date: 2010-03-29 / This paper presents the survey results: PROCEDURE FOR WORK IN HEALTH: an analysis of working conditions of social workers in hospitals. Analyzes the inclusion of social workers in work processes in healthcare, specifically in the public hospital, from the objective conditions of work, according to which materializes professional action. The aim is to understand them from the point of view of its relationship with users and other health professionals through the privatization of health, which prevents the Unified Health System (SUS), limiting the operation of the services and the guarantee of rights. The approach to the reality studied was through theoretical and methodological procedures based on the qualitative and quantitative research, focusing on documentary research, observation, semi-structured interview and the theoretical foundation. It is observed that the inclusion of social workers in this context arises from the demands derived from expressions of social issues, "raw material" of professional work, and the gaps resulting from contradictions in the process of rationalization / reorganization of the SUS, meaning that the needs the population are confronted with the content and form of organization of services. At the hospital, the professional actions are developed through the shift, space contradictory clash between the collective and individual, in which individual activities are prioritized and ad hoc unplanned and reduced to the solution of "problems" of users, through actions assistance in an emergency and bureaucratic. These findings emphasize the inadequacy of space and lack of minimum conditions of service to
users, which undertakes the professional with regard to ethical and political principles of the profession, since it is the responsibility and duty of the social guarantee the secrecy and privacy of users what is revealed during the process of professional intervention. The professional social workers is permeated by the diversity of skills and competence; lack of planning activities, by incorporating the institutional discourse at the expense of professional goals, by knowing the Code of Professional Ethics, for small number of professionals, the increasing number informality; by poor working conditions and wages; by discouraging research and participation in social policy councils, as well as professional training / Este trabalho apresenta os resultados da pesquisa: PROCESSO DE TRABALHO EM SA?DE: uma an?lise das condi??es de trabalho dos assistentes sociais no ?mbito hospitalar.

Serviço social, assistência social e drogas: um estudo do trabalho profissional do assistente social nos centros de referência especializados de assistência social no município do Rio de Janeiro / Social Work, social assistance and drugs: a study of the professional work of the social worker in specialized reference centers for social care in the city of Rio de JaneiroDiego Tabosa da Silva 30 September 2014 (has links)
This dissertation discusses the understanding of social workers who work in specialized reference centers for social assistance three social development coordinators in the city of Rio de Janeiro on the subject of drugs, in order to examine whether the professional actions are directed to a perspective criticism, disregarding conservative values in his speech, and during his professional work, seek to contribute critically to guarantee the rights of users. To this end, we conducted interviews with social workers inserted in the centers, and through their responses, we analyze how the issue of drugs is covered by social work professionals. The contribution to the guarantee of rights requires the professional social work the possibility of conducting mediations between the political and the contextuality user, also considering the possibilities and limits the historical path that runs through the use of drugs. It even place the understanding of drugs and their relation to the development of the capital, where the prohibitionist strategy responds to the interests of a particular power bloc. Thus this study will delineate the historical construction of social workers in Brazil, highlighting the processes that marked a break with the possibility of professional conservatism and therefore raised a professional perspective more critical and theoretically dense. Presents an analysis of capitalist development, highlighting current trends and strategies for confronting social issues, under the neoliberal context. And finally, plus realizadanos empirical research CREAS the study sought to identify whether social work professionals can strengthen the ethical-political project of the profession, or the marks left by the conservative Heritage, who gave birth to the profession are redeemed and used in professional work.
