Education and work: an evaluation of the Integrated Plan of Secondary Vocational Education in Fortaleza

Paulo Gurgel Mota 09 November 2011 (has links)
The Government of Cearà State (Brazil) through its Education Department (SEDUC) launched the Integrated Plan of Professional Education in 2007. Its proposal is to link the high school curriculum with student training for inclusion in society and the labour market. This research aims 1) to evaluate the practice of this educational policy in Cid Gomesâ management (the current Governor); 2) to check its purposes, how they will work in schools and how they will affect the lives of the students assisted by this mode of teaching; 3) to analyze the educational reform implemented by the Government of CearÃ. The bibliographical and documentary research portrayed the evolution of professional education in Brazil in recent decades, presenting an analysis of the public policies proposed for this mode. Two public high schools in Fortaleza were the objects of a case study, namely EEEP Joaquim AntÃnio Albano and EEEP OnÃlio Porto. In empirical research, we used methods and techniques of quantitative and qualitative methodologies, based on the representation and active participation of the subjects studied, by means of semi-structured interviews and questionnaires administered to 234 social actors, including teachers, principals and students in both schools. The data revealed that 67% of all students set the goal of passing the University entrance exam as their chief reason to stay in school. The results indicated that the teacher mentor figure for a small number of students (one teacher for every six students) enabled them to be protagonists in their learning process and co-responsible for their education. This mode of teaching proved to be an innovative and humane option, because while the students learn how to set goals, make commitments, make plans, review their goals and get results, it also intends to meet the labor market demands.

Prominences and their eruptions as observed with the IRIS mission and ancillary instruments / Les protubérances et leurs éruptions observées par la mission IRIS et les instruments auxiliaires

Zhang, Ping 25 February 2019 (has links)
Solar prominences are fascinating, large-scale magnetic structures in the solar atmosphere. They have been investigated for many decades, but the issues of their formation, stability, and eruption are still not well understood. Much progress has been made in our knowledge of prominences and their eruptions with both synoptic measurements from space (with SoHO/EIT, STEREO/SECCHI/EUVI, and SDO/AIA) and multiwavelength spectro-imaging. Since the launch of IRIS in 2013, a lot of results have been obtained in both observational and modeling domains with IRIS high spectral and spatial resolution imaging and spectroscopy. In this thesis, we focus on the observational signatures of the processes which have been put forward for explaining eruptive prominences. We also try to figure out the variations of physical conditions of the eruptive prominence and estimate the masses leaving the Sun vs. the masses returning to the Sun during the eruption. As far as velocities are concerned, we derive a full velocity vector for each pixel of the observed prominence by combining an optical flow method on the AIA 304Å and IRIS Mg II h&k images in order to derive the plane-of-sky velocities and a Doppler technique on the IRIS Mg II h&k profiles to compute the line-of-sight velocities. As far as densities and temperatures are concerned, we compare the absolute observed intensities with values derived from Non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (NLTE) radiative transfer computations to build maps of these quantities. The derived electron densities range from 1.3E9 to 7.0E10 cm⁻³ and the derived total Hydrogen densities range from 1.5E9 to 3.6E11 cm⁻³ in different regions of the prominence. The mean temperature is around 1.1E4 K which is higher than in quiescent prominences. The ionization degree is in the range of 0.1 to 10. The mass flows in the prominence and their variations with time are consequently computed. The total mass is 1.3E14 to 3.2E14 g. The total mass drainage from the prominence to the solar surface during the observation of IRIS is about one order of magnitude smaller than the total mass of prominence. We also explore the correlations between the observable spectral features in h and k lines of Mg II to physical quantities such as the density and the Emission Measure (EM). We choose to compute one-dimensional (1D) isothermal and isobaric models using the PRODOP_Mg NLTE code available at MEDOC (IAS) with the exact computation of the incident radiation. Then we derive correlations between the k and h emergent intensities on one hand and the densities and EM on the other hand. With some assumptions on the temperature, we obtain a unique relation between the k (and h) intensities and the EM that should be useful for deriving either the hydrogen and electron densities or the effective thickness of an observed prominence. Thus, the evolution of the morphology and thermodynamic properties of an erupting prominence have been studied in the thesis. These investigations lead to our understanding in some aspects of prominences, e.g., the distribution and evolution of densities, temperatures, velocities and ionization degree. These could be useful constraints for theoretical prominence models. In the conclusion, we summarize our results and provide some suggestions for future analysis, observations and ideal observing capabilities.

Voice Onset Time in Children With and Without Vocal Fold Nodules

Colletti, Lauren Anna January 2022 (has links)
Purpose: This study examined voice onset time (VOT) in children with and without vocal fold nodules (VFN). The purpose of this study was to provide further evidence regarding the need for individualized research and treatment dedicated to the pediatric population. The pediatric population has a distinctly different laryngeal mechanism than adults, as they are still developing. Although the pediatric system is anatomically different from that of a fully mature adult system, treatment for children with VFN is largely based on adult research. This study examined the VOTs of voiceless consonants, as the transition from the voiceless consonant to the subsequent vowel requires significant vocal and articulatory control and coordination. Measures of VOT change throughout the maturation as VOT follows a significant developmental pattern. Children with and without VFN were enlisted in order to examine the effects VFN have on VOT. Hypotheses: We hypothesize that children with VFN would have differences in 1) average VOT values compared to the control group, with no prediction for direction of difference (shorter and longer), and 2) between-word variability of VOT values compared to the control group, with no prediction for direction of difference (more variable and less variable). Methods: Participant data were retrospectively collected and included children between 6 and 12 years old with VFN and age- and sex-matched controls. Participants were recorded producing the six CAPE-V sentences. Four voiceless consonants were selected for VOT analysis. Praat was utilized to manually mark the vocal onset of the stop consonant by the current researcher. A previous researcher identified the vocal offset, and each placement was confirmed by the current researcher. VOT was calculated as the time between the stop consonant burst and the vocal onset of the vowel. Results: There was no significant difference between the VFN and the control groups in average VOT or VOT variability. Within the VFN group, participants who were more dysphonic (lower cepstral peak prominence (CPP) values) had more variable VOT values. Participants in the VFN group had lower CPP values than the control group, suggesting that CPP measures are a reliable indicator of dysphonia. Additionally, within the VFN group, male children had lower CPP values than female children. Conclusion: Although no group difference was found, the within-group analyses indicated that VFNs impacted productions. Children with VFN who were more dysphonic had increased VOT variability. This may suggest that VFN impact a child’s ability to phonate therefore causing more variability within productions. Future research is needed to study the impact dysphonia treatment for children with VFN may have on VOT values. Additionally, a longitudinal study of the impact of VFNs on VOT values during developmental stages may be warranted. / Public Health

Designelements betydelse för ökat förtroende på byggföretags webbplatser / The impact of design elements for the purpose of increasing trust in home renovation companies’ websites

Öhman, Linn, Stenholm, Johanna, Lundström, Frida January 2022 (has links)
The existing research available on website credibility has been carried out primarily on e-commerce, travel, news, and online gaming sites. The results identified the credible design elements of those websites. Considering the recent surge in home renovation demand in Sweden, investigating the impact of those design elements when implementing them on websites for companies in the home renovation industry is worth investigating. This study assumes that the first interaction between the user and a company takes place through their website and the goal of this study was to identify which design elements from the existing research on website credibility affect the user’s trust and what encourages them to pursue further contact. Prominence-Interpretation Theory was implemented to identify which attributes the user interprets as credible and should be prominent on a construction company's website. A mixed method approach was used to derive data: a quantitative survey and qualitative semi-structured interviews. The survey was based on the existing research on website credibility where specific credible design elements were tested and ranked, which produced objective results. The study results showed that an interface including the company’s services and contact details, photos of completed projects and employees as well as a well thought-out and visually appealing design and layout were significant in building trust.

#WishYouWereHere! ‒ Essays on travel bragging

Liu, Hongbo January 2019 (has links)
Travel bragging, referring to the act of showing off or boasting about travel experiences, is ubiquitous on social media; travel bragging rights (e.g., Instagrammability) have become an important factor in travel decision-making in the social media era. Despite these developments, research on travel bragging remains scarce. This dissertation presents two studies. The first aimed to explore travel bragging via qualitative approaches (i.e., in-depth interviews, means-end analysis, and photo elicitation) to determine how consumers (both braggers and the audience) defined and perceived travel bragging and travel bragging rights. This study provided a systematic conceptualization of travel bragging, including a definition of the term, how to distinguish travel bragging from travel experience sharing, motivations behind travel bragging, the influence of travel bragging on travel braggers and their audience, and coping strategies consumers used to mitigate the negative impacts of travel bragging. This conceptualization of travel bragging highlighted perception gaps between travel braggers and the audience in identifying travel bragging, motivations behind this behavior, and the audience’s emotional reactions to it. The first study also provided a conceptual framework of travel bragging rights, which includes seven dimensions related to destination attributes: difference, similarity, scarcity, functionality, symbolism, hedonism, and consequentiality. Results show that, as a travel motivation, seeking travel bragging rights exerts a stronger influence on young generations and active social media content generators. The second study sought to investigate travel bragging in an online travel review context using an experimental design. Drawing on attribution theory and the emotional contagion effect, this study attempted to identify whether two visual cues in user-generated photos (pictorial self-prominence and selfies) could affect the persuasion effect of online reviews through perceived dubious motivations and positive emotions. Pictorial self-prominence (i.e., the degree to which the image of oneself is noticeable from user-generated photos) is a new concept introduced in this study. It was manipulated in two ways: the ratio of the area of one’s image to a whole self-portrait, and the ratio of the number of photos including the reviewer’s image to the total number of photos uploaded per online review. Results show that pictorial self-prominence has a negative impact on review helpfulness through perceived dubious motivations; however, this effect did not extend to visit intention to the tourist attraction mentioned in the online review. The findings also show that pictorial self-prominence (manipulated by number ratio) and selfie had a significant interaction effect on review helpfulness, such that when more photos contained the reviewer’s image, online reviews with selfies were perceived as more helpful than those with non-selfies. Follow-up analysis revealed that this interaction effect was mediated by perceived authenticity and perceived source expertise. Theoretically, this dissertation presents a systematic and comprehensive conceptualization of travel bragging, including travel bragging behavior and travel bragging rights. This conceptualization provides an update to consumers’ opinions about travel bragging and travel bragging rights in the social media era. This work also contributes to the word-of-mouth literature by uncovering the influences of travel bragging and underlying mechanisms. In addition, this dissertation reveals the influences of pictorial self-prominence and selfies on review helpfulness, highlighting the importance of visual cues in online word of mouth. Managerially, findings regarding travel bragging and travel bragging rights offer important implications for destination marketing organizations and associated social media marketers. The dissertation also outlines a series of tactful self-presentation strategies for individuals who enjoy bragging about or sharing travel experiences on social media while avoiding being perceived negatively. In addition, findings from the first study call for attention from policy makers to the negative psychological effects of travel bragging on travel braggers and the audience. The study on pictorial self-prominence and selfies provides important implications for destination marketers’ visual marketing strategies. / Tourism and Sport

Santos, Vanessa Flores dos January 2016 (has links)
This paper revolves around a variety of social experiences that congregate forms of political prominence engendered by black leaders and quilombola communities. It also addresses the different paths that were taken in the evaluation and decisions making regarding the dialogues with governmental spheres and the access to public policies. Taking into consideration the conditions of possibility for projects and interlocutions that attain and occur in each locality, the ethnographic work itself was also called into question and analysed. By contrasting different local groups’ receptivity or not to this research, the accumulation of diverse experiences in the handling of shared lives and of new relationships within the fight for social recognition and historical reparation comes into light. Starting from an initial ethnographic experience in which the continuity of the desired ethnographical initiative wasn’t made possible, a first movement points to a possible way of negotiating relationships and ethnic-racial belonging, one that prioritizes a sought autonomy in the already existent local interlocutions. In a second movement, the ethnographic experience with people and families that form the Rincão da Faxina has outspreads in the looking and problematizing of diverse life’s domains. From the development projects that arrive at the town of Piratini, to the opening to the new and dynamic of the hard and possible interlocutions with public authorities, the visibility of this black experiences in the states’ campanha region points to generational displacements and family dynamics. From the generational movements between working and living areas along the rural districts and the town, to the sought after investment in educational policies through an access to affirmative actions to quilombolas at universities, family and community values such as “to always live together” and disputes for legitimacy are at stake.
