O período presente entre o começo do século XIV e ano de 1418 é indispensável para a compreensão do cenário religioso-político medieval e para a compreensão das bases do mesmo pensamento na Idade Moderna. Neste período temos a mudança da sede da Igreja Católica de Roma pra Avignon, o retorno da mesma para Roma, a divisão da Igreja em dois grupos, cada um liderado por um papa, o Cisma do Ocidente, cisma esse que dura por décadas. Temos a ampliação do pensamento herético, a conversa entre grupos heterodoxos, e tentativas de conciliação que nem sempre eram absolutas e levavam até mesmo a renúncia do cargo pontifical. Neste período viveu John Wycliffe, professor de teologia em Oxford, tendo produzido uma série de obras em latim e outra ainda maior em inglês. Divulgando seus ideias para o povo e criando seu próprio grupo, os Lolardos. Esse pensador, dialogando com os grandes pensadores católicos e revendo pensamentos de outras heresias anteriores, cria a premissa da impossibilidade de uma igreja que fosse ao mesmo tempo autenticamente cristã e institucionalizada ou poderosa, em sua obra The Wicket. Através de uma argumentação racional e humanista, Wycliffe formulou, de certa forma, a base para a reforma protestante, ao mesmo tempo que precisou ser descartado pela mesma, após seu crescimento nos círculos de poder e institucionalização. A melhor compreensão deste peculiar autor e de sua obra permite não somente compreender melhor o mundo da baixa Idade Média, suas disputas religiosas e políticas, como também aprofundar o conhecimento sobre as bases do pensamento moderno. Além de lançar bases para a própria problematização da estrutura do poder religioso em si, seja ele católico ou não. / The Late Middle Ages, specially the period between 1305 and 1418 is indispensable to understand the political an religious though not only of the medieval people, but for the comprehension of the modern ages. In this small period of time much religious turbulence took place in Western Europe. The capital of the Catholic Church moved to Avignon and then returned to Roma, the Church slipt in two different factions in the Great Western Schism and each group was leaded by a different pope, both of them considering themselves as the sumo pontifce and the only true connection between God and men in earth. The Schism lasts for decades and each pope define the other as the antichrist. In this period the heretical though grown up and the attempts of reconciliations of the groups not always become effective, in matter of fact once even a pope renounced his post. John Wycliffe, professor of Theology in Oxford University, lived in this time. He produced a great number of papers in Latin and a even more great number of papers in middle English. His ideas continued with his followers the Lollards. This great thinker created important dialogues with the other heretical thinkers, being one of the most important pre-reformist theologian and creating the bases of the protestant reform. But the also created the idea that the true Christian church would never be institutionalized neither it could be powerful. In his sermon The Wicket, using humanistic reason, he united the words of Jesus in the Gospels to prove that would be impossible to create a strong institutionalized church. So, this particular paper was also put aside because it was not interesting for the newly created institutionalized church of the 16th century Studding this thinker and his works, specially the Wicket is very important to better understand not only the medieval church, but the institutionalized church of all times.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar a relação estabelecida entre Igreja, Estado e a Educação durante o movimento da Reforma Protestante do século XVI, enfatizando as ações de Martinho Lutero. Tendo como cenário e objetivo principal o início de um movimento de reforma religiosa, Lutero também apresenta propostas de mudanças na educação escolar. Em um contexto em que a educação era organizada e mantida somente pela Igreja, ele propõe alterações tanto no que se refere à organização de um sistema educacional (envolvendo temas como currículo, métodos, professores, formas de financiamento, entre outros), quanto aos princípios e fundamentos que deveriam nortear essa educação, defendendo que esta seja para todos - incluindo as meninas, de freqüência obrigatória, que apresente uma utilidade social e seja mantida pelo Estado. Buscou-se apresentar a discussão sobre a origem de uma educação elementar popular contrapondo as ações dos Irmãos da Vida Comum, comunidade de clérigos católicos que promoviam experiências nesse sentido desde o século XIV, com as propostas do reformador. Entretanto, é o caráter estatal que Lutero atribui à educação escolar que o trabalho pretende enfatizar, analisando-se, para isso, a formação do conceito de Estado para Lutero, bem como para sua época, e sua posição estabelecida diante das e com as autoridades seculares. Ainda que muitas das propostas de Lutero só tenham se concretizado após a sua morte e, principalmente, nos séculos que se seguiram, cabe ressaltar a relevância e as contribuições que ele apresentou para que a educação fosse entendida e se constituísse como um dever do Estado e um direito de todos os cidadãos. / The objective of this work is to analyze the relationship among the Church, State and the Educational System during the Protestant Reformation in 16th century, focusing actions of Martin Luther. Having as a main objective a religious reform creation, Luther also presented plans for changing the current educational system. The scenario Luther was inserted was based on an educational system ruled and maintained by the Church, and he proposes both system organizational changes (ranging items such as curriculum, methods, teachers, financing plans, among others) and the principles and basement that should conduct this educational system, supporting that it should be every people (including girls), mandatory attending, useful for the society and sustained by the State. He opened a discussion about the origin of a public elementary school, in line with to the deeds of \"Brother-Hoods\", Roman Catholic clerical group that also promoted some practice complying with that since 14th century, using the reformer ideas. However, the State role that Luther attributes to the educational system is the kernel of this work, through analyzes of the Luther formation of the \"State\" concept, considering the period when the analysis was taken as well as the approach the authorities had with the underlying subject. Although many of Luther\'s ideas were applied after his death, and mainly in the centuries to follow, it\'s important to highlight the contributions he brought to make the educational system as a State duty and a right for all the citizens.

A pesquisa teve como objetivo estudar as escolas americanas de confissão protestante na província e depois estado se São Paulo, na perspectiva de conhecer como se deu a presença da música nestas escolas. O período que está sendo enfocado nesta pesquisa é de 1870 a 1920. A educação musical no período é um campo particularmente fértil, por não ter sido suficientemente estudada, seja no campo da História da Educação ou no campo da Educação Musical. Neste período, verifica-se uma nova conformação cultural que se deu na sociedade brasileira e, em particular na sociedade paulista, com a presença das denominações protestantes no Brasil e o desenvolvimento de uma rede de escolas americanas protestantes num cenário onde circulavam as tradicionais influências portuguesas, francesas e alemãs. Apoiada na bibliografia, esta pesquisa constatou que essas escolas se apresentavam enquanto a possibilidade de uma melhor formação, que a oferecida pelas escolas nacionais, sendo por isso, apoiadas pelos liberais e republicanos, os quais valorizavam o seu caráter democrático, os métodos atualizados e um particular interesse pela educação feminina. Foi retomado o estudo da inserção da música a partir da Reforma Protestante com o propósito de entender como foi utilizada a música na igreja e para verificar se esta teria influenciado o ensino da música nas escolas americanas dessa confissão. Em seguida foram estudadas três escolas protestantes em São Paulo ligadas a três Igrejas Históricas (Presbiteriana, Metodista e Batista), bem como o repertório musical nelas praticado, com o objetivo de comprovar se aquele movimento se verificou também nesse episódio histórico da educação paulista, trabalhando no campo interdisciplinar de pesquisa. Utilizamos como fontes primárias entre outros materiais inéditos, partituras e coletâneas musicais. / The research aimed at studying American schools professing the protestant faith in the province and then the state of São Paulo, in the perspective of getting to know the ways in which music was present in these schools. The time period focused in this research ranges from 1870 to 1920. Musical education in this period is a particularly rich field as it has not been studied thoroughly enough whether in the field of the History of Education or in that of Musical Education. A new cultural framework is apparent as having taken place in the Brazilian society, markedly in the society of São Paulo, resulting from the presence of protestant denominations in Brazil and the development of a network of American protestant schools in a setting where traditional Portuguese, French and German influences were present. Supported by the bibliography, this research evidenced that these schools seemed to provide better quality of education than that of the national schools, being therefore supported by the liberals and republicans who valued their democratic nature, updated methodology and noteworthy interest in female education. The study of the insertion of music starting with the Protestant Reformation was resumed with the intent of understanding how music was used in the church and to verify if the later may have influenced the teaching of music in the American schools which professed such faith. Afterwards, working in the interdisciplinary field of research, three protestant schools located in São Paulo were studied, which are associated with three Historical churches (Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist), as well as the musical repertoire practiced in them, with the intent of attesting if that movement was also present in this historical episode of education n São Paulo. Partitions and musical collections, among other unique material, were used as primary source.

The first analyses the strategies of foundation of a civilizer project by north-american presbiterian missionaries, linked to the Central Brazil Mission in Bahia countryside betwen 1871 to 1937. From churches, schools, hospitals and nursing schools creation, in the area under their jurisdiction, thosse Good mensagers intend to transform the Brazilian countryside into a “civilized” area by producing a new way of life and believe in the society which they become fixed. The second point investigates fragments of Ponte Nova Institute history from 1906, year of foundation, to 1937, when ocurred a structural reconfiguration in side north-american presbiterian mission that aperated in the Brazilian hinterland. Created by Central Brazil Mission, following the north-american presbiterian aducational patterns, the school had a fundamental participation in political action formulation of that missionary organization. Politic that had as objective, forming female teachers for schools and man that would be evangelists and future ministers for churches, transforming them into agents of new civilinzing poposal. / A pesquisa “Educar, curar, salvar: uma ilha de civilização no Brasil Tropical” foi desenvolvida com base em dois eixos de análise e temporalidade distintos. O primeiro analisa as estratégias de implantação de um projeto civilizador por missionários presbiterianos norte-americanos, vinculados à Missão Central do Brasil no interior da Bahia no período de 1871 a 1937. A partir da criação de igrejas, escolas, hospitais e escolas de enfermagem, na área sob sua jurisdição, aqueles mensageiros de Deus pretendiam transformar o interior brasileiro numa região “civilizada”, procurando produzir um novo modo de viver e crer na sociedade em que se estabeleceram. O segundo eixo investiga fragmentos da história do Instituto Ponte Nova no período de 1906, ano de fundação, a 1937, ano em que ocorreu uma reconfiguração estrutural no interior da missão presbiteriana norte-americana que atuava no hinterland brasileiro. Criado pela Missão Central do Brasil, em conformidade com os moldes educacionais presbiterianos norte-americanos, a escola teve um papel fundamental na formulação da política de ação daquela organização missionária. Política que teve como objetivo, formar professoras para suas escolas e homens que seriam evangelistas e futuros pastores de suas igrejas, transformando-os em agentes de uma nova proposta civilizadora.

A travers une enquête prosopographique sur les 480 experts officiels (periti) du concile Vatican II, cette thèse interroge à nouveaux frais l’histoire des idées et des réseaux à l’intérieur du catholicisme au cours du second vingtième siècle. En s’intéressant aux acteurs et à leurs points de vue subjectifs, à leurs trajectoires mais également aux médiations institutionnelles et aux sociabilités dans lesquelles ils sont pris, on s’attache à inscrire cet « événement » et ses suites dans les conditions historiques et sociales de sa production. Structuré entre un pôle institutionnel (le gouvernement de l’Église, diocésain ou romain, mais aussi l’enseignement) et un pôle prophétique (les pionniers dans les mouvements d’Église et les chercheurs), le champ religieux, étudié au prisme du groupe des periti, apparaît comme un espace où les prises de position renvoient largement aux positions occupées. Or le concile, s’il ne transforme pas le champ étudié, perturbe un temps les mécanismes ordinaires de légitimation des discours de vérité, et modifie, pour certains experts, les positions dans ce champ. Les carrières postérieures de nombre d’entre eux confirment un réajustement relatif de leurs propres prises de position, comme de celles de l’institution, tout en consacrant les positions de pouvoir d’une nouvelle génération. Répercutés dans, et modifiés par la logique conciliaire, ces débats situent le concile dans une histoire plus longue du catholicisme. A son tour, la cartographie dynamique de l’espace théologique qui se dessine aide à placer la théologie dans une histoire internationale des circulations intellectuelles, celles des idées comme celles des hommes. / Based on a prosopographic investigation of the 480 official experts (periti) at the Second Vatican Council, this thesis revisits the history of ideas and networks of twentieth century Catholicism. By focusing on individual protagonists, their points of view, their trajectories as well as the interpersonal relationships and institutional mediations they are involved in, this research aims to reposition this event and its aftermath in the life history of the Church as determined by its historical and social conditions of production. The Catholic field is structured by a tense relation between an institutional center (comprising the government of the Church, be it local – diocesan, or global – Roman, and the teaching institutions) and a prophetic pole (the Church movements’ pioneers and the researchers). Studying the periti group, it appears that intellectual or theological stances often relate to positions held in the field. Although it does not ultimately transform the field itself, the council temporarily disrupts the ordinary process through which truth speeches are legitimized inside the institution, and alters some of the experts’ position in the field. Research into the later careers of a few of them confirm the relative readjustment of their own stands, as well as of those of the whole institution, while consolidating the positions of power of a new generation in the Church administration. As they are echoed and modified by the conciliar logic, these debates place the council in a longer Catholic history. In return, this dynamic cartography of Catholic ideas contributes to a better understanding of the place of theology in a global history of the intellectual networks, involving ideas and people.

ONG Religiosa: agente de transformação social? / Religious NGO: agent of social transformation?

The social transformation which we intend to investigate is in line with the new concept of citizenship , as proposed by authors such as Dagnino (2004), and so prescribes a type of social intervention that moves towards the formation of autonomous social subjects, that is, capable of recognizing themselves as subjects with rights and participants in their own social transformation; the creation of spaces for dialogue and political action so as to give voice to those who are silenced by the social authoritarianism that rules the Brazilian Northeast and the promotion of reconciliation between the sertanejo and the Northeastern semi-arid region. In order to arrive at this understanding, we analyzed the interrelation between the religious presuppositions of Diaconia and the political ideology of the new citizenship, and investigated the modus operandi of the NGO in the Agreste Potiguar (RN) in Northeast Brazil. In the Diaconia model of action, every project is accompanied by training programs which enable local farming families to attain technological and political knowledge which makes the sertanejos identify rights such as water, food and health treatment, and to the conscience that they should actively ascertain those rights. Diaconia also enables and promotes community political dialogue and debate, through meetings in the local rural associations and unions. These practices favor the formation of local leadership, develop a model of participant democracy and strengthen the bonds of solidarity in the community. As for the relationship between man and nature, Diaconia works with local producers in the sense of providing social knowledge and capabilities which help them to understand and interact with the semi-arid region, feed themselves and generate income from it. / Esta pesquisa é o estudo de caso da ONG Diaconia, que objetivou observar se esta organização de orientação religiosa protestante promove a transformação social nas comunidades onde se faz presente. A transformação social que se desejou verificar afina-se com as propostas do novo conceito de cidadania, conforme proposto por autores como Dagnino (2004), por isso prescreve uma intervenção social que caminha em direção à construção de sujeitos sociais autônomos, isto é, capazes de se reconhecerem sujeitos de direitos e participantes da própria transformação social; a criação de espaços de diálogo e fazer político de modo que permita voz aos silenciados pelo autoritarismo social que rege o nordeste e por fim a promoção da reconciliação entre o sertanejo e o semiárido nordestino. Para se chegar a esse entendimento analisou-se a inter-relação entre os pressupostos religiosos da Diaconia e a ideologia política da nova cidadania e se ponderou o modus operandi da ONG no Agreste Potiguar (RN) no nordeste do Brasil. No modelo de atuação da Diaconia percebeu-se que todo projeto é acompanhado por capacitações que disponibilizam aos agricultores(as) familiares conhecimentos tecnológicos e políticos que levam os sertanejos a identificarem direitos como: água, alimento e saúde e a se conscientizarem que devem reivindicá-los ativamente. A Re-evaluation of the 'Death of God' Theology

Although the ‘death of God’ theology attracted considerable attention during the 1960s, in recent decades it has fallen into neglect. Nonetheless, the issues raised by the ‘death of God’ theology were important ones and it remains an interesting question whether the ‘death of God’ theologians were able to make substantial contributions to them. This thesis re-examines the work of the ‘death of God’ theologians. It argues that the popular view – that the ‘death of God’ theology represented a common tendency, or movement, towards atheism among certain prominent American Protestant theologians – is mistaken. Through a series of detailed studies of Thomas J.J. Altizer (chapters 3 and 4), William Hamilton (Chapter 5), Paul van Buren (Chapter 6), and Harvey Cox (Chapter 7), the thesis shows not only that the significance of the ‘death of God’ theologians has been widely misinterpreted, but that their work contains a number of features which have been under-emphasised or even overlooked. The aim of the thesis is to provide a more balanced contemporary reading of their work. The work of Altizer receives special attention and a case is made for the view that he should be read as a Protestant mystic of a peculiar sort.

Die Magisterarbeit untersucht die Kirchenpolitik der SED in der ersten Hälfte der sechziger Jahre auf regionaler Ebene. Sie fragt, wie die Staats- und Parteiorgane des Bezirkes Potsdam gegenüber der Evangelischen Kirche Berlin-Brandenburg agierten, wie die zentralen Beschlüsse vor Ort umgesetzt wurden und welche Probleme dabei auftraten. Bei der Durchsetzung des Sozialismus in der DDR und der Sicherung der eigenen Herrschaft, stand der Staatspartei SED die evangelische Kirche als gesellschaftlicher Großverband im Weg. Nach einem harten Repressionskurs in den fünfziger Jahren, änderte die SED um 1960/61 ihre Strategie, um den Einfluss der Kirche auf die Gesellschaft auszuschalten. Die Christen sollten in die Gesellschaft integriert und vom Sozialismus überzeugt werden. Nach der Darstellung der Grundlagen der Kirchenpolitik der SED sowie der Evangelischen Kirche, analysiert die Arbeit die Umsetzung der Überzeugungsstrategie des SED-Staates im Bezirk Potsdam. Kirchenpolitische Strukturen, Akteure sowie Methoden werden anhand von Unterlagen des Rates des Bezirkes Potsdam sowie der SED-Bezirksleitung untersucht. Die Kirchenpolitik in den Bezirken sollte zu Beginn der sechziger Jahre systematischer und kontinuierlicher durchgeführt werden als zuvor. In einem Betreuungssystem wurden alle Pfarrer, kirchliche Mitarbeiter und engagierte Laien erfasst, um sie in regelmäßigen Gesprächen vom Sozialismus zu überzeugen, notfalls mit finanziellen Anreizen. Bei der Umsetzung klafften Anspruch und Realität weit auseinander. Personalmangel, Qualifizierung und mangelnde Bereitschaft der Mitarbeiter, aber auch die Resistenz der Pfarrerschaft ließen den Bezirksorganen meist nur die Beobachtung und Verwaltung kirchlicher Angelegenheiten. Als die Kirche in Berlin-Brandenburg Anfang 1966 den EKD-Ratsvorsitzenden Kurt Scharf zu ihrem Bischof wählte, war offensichtlich, dass die Überzeugungsstrategie erhebliche Mängel aufwies. / The M.A. thesis analyses the church policy of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany on a regional level in the first half of the 1960s. The paper investigates how the administrative body of the state and the party in the Bezirk (district) Potsdam dealt with the Protestant Church in Berlin-Brandenburg, how they implemented central decisions and which problems occurred. With implementation of socialism in the GDR and securing their own power the Socialist Unity Party had its adversary in the Protestant church as one of the biggest social organizations. After hard repressions in the 1950s the Socialist Unity Party changed its strategy around 1960/61 to eliminate the influence of the protestant church on society. Christians from now on were supposed to be integrated in society and to be convinced of socialism. The paper focuses on the principles of church policy of the Socialist Unity Party and the Protestant Church, and investigates the implementation of the new persuasion strategy in the Bezirk Potsdam. Structures of church policy, protagonists and methods will be analysed on basis of documents from the Rat des Bezirkes (council) and the party leadership of the Bezirk. At the beginning of the 1960s the church policy of the regional districts in the GDR was meant to be more systematic and continuous as before. In a “mentoring” system all pastors, church staff and committed laypersons were registered in order to convince them of socialism in regular talks, in case of need with financial incentives. However, concerning implementation demands and reality diverged immensely. Staff shortage, lacking willingness and qualification of the staff, but also due to the pastors’ resistance the administrative body of state and party in the Bezirk Potsdam could only deal with administration and the observation of church matters. That the persuasion system had enormous obstacles became obvious when in 1966 the Protestant Church in Berlin-Brandenburg elected the leader of the EKD, Kurt Scharf, as their bishop.
