Norberg, Peter January 2001 (has links)
Diss. The Protestant Orphan Asylum and the Montreal Ladies' Benevolent Society : a case study in Protestant child charity in Montreal, 1822-1900

Harvey, Janice. January 2001 (has links)
As Lower Canada/Quebec industrialized, the system of poor relief that developed followed a private, confessional model. While the Catholic Church controlled services for Catholics, the lay Protestant elite controlled the relief network for their community. Elite women played a major role in this network, managing most of the charities for women and children. / This thesis uses the two most important female-directed Montreal charities---the Protestant Orphan Asylum and the Montreal Ladies' Benevolent Society---to study Protestant charity and particularly child charity from 1822 to 1900. It examines the organization and work of female charity committees as well as the services offered, the relevance of gender to charity management, and attitudes to childhood and family. Extensive source material, from the archives of the two societies, enables an analysis of the characteristics of the children admitted, as well as of the management committees, and their policies. / In this period, serving on a charity board was an expected activity for elite women. As a result, committees had many members. However, this thesis reveals that only a small number of women actually participated in the substantial administrative and organizational work that was involved in running a charity. This lack of participation made it more difficult to supervise the institutions and to organize fund-raising events. / Formed by the elite to regulate as well as to help the poor, these charities permit an examination of working-class agency. Organisers used their control of admissions and discharges as well as the institutional regime to impose their values of parenting and work. Nonetheless, the study of these two charities shows that families managed to use charities to shelter their children temporarily, occasionally circumventing restrictive access rules or challenging a charity's refusal to discharge children. / As "ladies" acting in public, the women in control of these charities were influenced by restrictive gender ideologies, particularly that of "separate spheres." Gender conscious and conservative, they respected social conventions in their public appearances and deferred to men in critical areas such as investments. Yet, at the same time, they affirmed their abilities and defended their authority and their autonomy in areas considered in the women's sphere, including child-care and charity management. / Understanding charity from within a conservative culture that emphasized religion, tradition, and values like work, family, and social hierarchy, these benevolent women sought to relieve the poor but they also sought to train useful citizens. In their charity work, they faced many complex questions connected to child abuse, changes in apprenticeship systems, adequate training for children, and the rights of parents. This study argues that both their conservative approach and their women's culture, centered on a personal approach, influenced the way they dealt with these issues. Of equal importance, however, was the experience they had acquired over years of child-charity work. As a result of these factors, their emphasis on protecting the children under their care increased over time. Consequently, the policies they developed in favour of helping families with temporary care and in favour of using apprenticeship and finally extended training in the institution itself diverged from those advocated by late-century reform groups, which opted for placing children in families instead of institutions and which advocated more restrictive, scientific charity methods.

It is described how the church stands out through the merchandising strategies contained in their theologic speech, having this as the main element of differentiation from the others religious groups. This work seeks to identify, through what was observed in the religious ceremonies and sermons preached by the ecclesiastic leadership, the main theological practices of how the religious speech relates, in this specific case, with the postmodernity, so much in the daily basis as well as in the marketing strategies used in the religious dispute.

Grow your business for God. : Exploring entrepreneuship in the Pentecostal churches in Uganda.

Akuma, Tom January 2018 (has links)
Pentecostalism has grown from its founding days in 1900 in Topeka, USA and has extended its reach to most parts the world including Africa where it took off in the 1970s and continues to grow with many mega churches being established. In addition to their main role of taking care of the spiritual development of their followers, many Pentecostal churches have begun to get involved in provision of social and economic goods and services. This has however attracted attention to the churches with some of them being labelled as businesses, their founders being considered as entrepreneurs hiding under the guise of churches and seen as exploiting their followers. The purpose of the thesis is to explore, through research questions, if entrepreneurial activities are carried out in the Pentecostal churches in Uganda and if so, whether such activities can be considered productive, unproductive or destructive entrepreneurship and what their implications are. This qualitative study employed qualitative methods of data collection and deductive approach with primary data collected through semi-structured interviews with 6 members of Pentecostal churches in Kampala and 1 non-member that regularly goes to Pentecostal churches to get a feel of their activities. The findings show that there the Pentecostal churches carryout a number of entrepreneurial activities that address spiritual, social and economic aspects of the church members and the community. The study further shows that some of these entrepreneurial activities have a positive impact on the church members and the community and by extension the state whereas some activities do not improve the church members and the community and others have a negative impact on the church members and the community. It is shown through this thesis that determining the implication of the entrepreneurial activities is complicated when such activities are lumped together and not considered individually since some of the activities in the Pentecostal may be productive while some may be unproductive or destructive. The contribution of this thesis is by proposing a matrix as an alternative tool for analysis of the various entrepreneurial activities in the Pentecostal churches by considering their effect on different stakeholders to determine if the activity achieved the reason for its establishment.

[en] FOR AN EMBODIED FAITH: POLITICAL E SOCIAL THEOLOGY IN THE BRAZILIAN PROTESTANTISM / [pt] POR UMA FÉ ENCARNADA: TEOLOGIA SOCIAL E POLÍTICA NO PROTESTANTISMO BRASILEIRO

WANDERLEY PEREIRA DA ROSA 12 September 2017 (has links)
[en] This research aims to understand the protestant ethos: its potential, successes and failures, especially in Brazil. Within this overall theme, it deals with the specific question of the social role of Protestantism. The core of the study is simple and can be framed by the following question: Did Brazilian Protestantism during its history really give relevant contributions to this country in social and political terms? The question expresses curiosity about the deeper structures and the indelible print marks which Protestantism might have left in Brazilian society. Do they exist? If so, where are they? And how did they happen? If they do not exist, what went wrong? And for what reason? This larger question is followed by a second one. Were there in the remote history of Protestantism at its European origins special characteristics and idiosyncratic commitments that could have inspired and oriented the national Protestant Church to build a relevant ecclesial model and social praxis?

Ancestors : a challenge to the Oruuano Church of Namibia

Breure, Johan 11 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Oruuano is an Independent Church in Namibia founded in 1955 because of members of the Herero community breaking away from the Rhenish Mission Church. Oruuano has the same doctrinal position as the Evangelical Lutheran Churches. In all church services it uses the standard Lutheran liturgical forms and the Otjiherero Lutheran hymnal. Belief in the ancestors is strong among the Herero. It is centred around the holy fire that is found between the main house of the head man and the cattle's kraal. The church does not acknowledge the ancestors, but it allows its members to venerate their ancestors outside the church. The church's approach is that of tacit consent. This dissertation discusses this approach and concludes that Oruuano cannot remain silent on the ancestors any longer. Time has come to deal with it theologically, showing the supremacy of Christ, while integrating Herero traditional practices and spirituality with the worship and practice of Oruuano. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M.Th.

Paulo Dorfman 12 February 2008 (has links)
This dissertation proposes an analysis of the sacred musical work by Porto Alegre composer Léo Schneider (1910-1978) based on a selection of his major sacred compositions. It emphasizes the uniqueness of Schneiders esthetic project and its possibilities as a tool for religious education. The first part of the research introduces Leo Schneiders personal history, from his family background to his formal and musical education, pointing out the environment in which he lived and the cultural, social and political background of his time. Musical aspects of the major Brazilian composers of his time and the international musical scenario of the period will also be taken into consideration. The focus is on sacred compositions of Schneiders time through a parallel between his work and that of his contemporaries, but the research also provides an understanding of his work within the context of protestant communities, especially Lutheran. The second part of the dissertation addresses the influence of Martin Luthers ideas on Leo Schneiders life and work, particularly the reformers principles towards the meaning and the use of music in the church. The third part of the research analyzes five of Schneiders major sacred compositions, taking into account their musical and literary aspects so as to draw pedagogic connections in the fields of music, theology and religious education, stressing out the practical side of the composer, a diligent and creative artist at the service of the Gospel teaching through music.
