A community hall for St. Andrew's, ManitobaLewkowich, Kyle Andrew 05 1900 (has links)
Through analysis of the site, and of the important historic precedents in the area of St.
Andrew's, Manitoba, the project attempts to fill a void in the fabric of life of a rural community.
Moreover, the project seeks to ameliorate the negative effects that sub-urbanization is having in
the present, and will have in the future, upon the community of St. Andrew's. A community hall
in a strategic location - at the junction of the historic Red River Heritage Parkway, and St.
Andrews's Road - will increase the civic and community presence at the heart of the small town.
Sited in relation to St. Andrew's Church, the St. Andrew's Rectory, and St. Andrew's
Elementary, the proposed Community Hall will first of all provide a place for people in and
outside the community to gather, be it for socials, dances, political meetings, or fall suppers.
Secondly, the Community Hall will address the life of the Red River. A problem
identified by the research was that new subdivisions within St. Andrew's fail to address the Red
River. A Community Hall, which refocuses considerable attention towards river recreation, would
increase the awareness of planners and other professionals so that St. Andrew's will be developed
in ways which contribute to the fabric of life in St. Andrew's.
To this end, the project supports the development of a descriptive, rather than
prescriptive, park-like area along the banks of the Red River. Such a park would provide places
for children and adults to seek out the river's edge for recreation, both in winter and in summer.
Small hills will be enjoyed as sledding opportunities, while a concerted effort in cleaning and
scraping the ice of the river will provide for public skating. Boat launches will be used in summer
by visitors, and small shacks provided in both winter and summer for respite from the elements.
The programme of the building will also support such activities. The main floor and
mezzanine should be viewed as "formal," as they address the events of the community at large and
ingrain themselves into the life of school, church, and town. The lower floor of the building,
however, will have public washrooms, rentable rooms for boy scout meetings, floor hockey and
the like, and a concession area. This lower level will address itself to the informal life of the
community as embodied through the symbol of the Red River. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA), School of / Graduate

Erfarenheter av att arbeta med tillgänglighet vid uppförandet av publika lokaler / Experiences of Working with Accessibility in the Construction of Public BuildingsAlfons, Linda, Huotila, Katarina January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to describe the experiences of persons working with accessibility and participating in the building process of two newly constructed buildings containing public spaces. A qualitative study was chosen as method, to obtain a holistic understanding of the ideas that are the foundation/basis of accessibility work in the construction of public buildings. Semi-structured interviews were used and the material was analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Three categories was the result: Who are expected to have knowledge and when, Priorities in the building process and Complex accessibility despite laws and regulations. The result showed that the knowledge of accessibility and targetgroups with different types of impairments varied, and that the knowledge of usability was insufficient, which could lead to a lack of participation for target groups. The view on who accessibility was for was often limited to people with mobility impairments and people with visual impairments. The conclusion drawn was that an activity perspective on accessibility, i.e usability, could contribute to the participation of more target groups in society.

Using and reusing the monumental past in the late antique Mediterranean West, 300-600Underwood, Douglas R. January 2015 (has links)
Scholarship on late antique cities has largely conceptualized them as singular entities, either decaying or transitioning as Roman imperial power and economic structures shifted. Improved archaeological data from urban sites, accompanied by a number of broad synthetic studies, now allow for fresh exploration of the details of urbanism in this transformative era. This study examines the ways that a select group of public buildings were used and reused in the Mediterranean West between 300 and 600 CE. This examination is primarily carried out through the collection of a broad catalogue of archaeological evidence (supplemented with epigraphic and literary testimony) for the constructions, work projects, abandonments and reuses of key public monuments across the Western Mediterranean region—principally Italy, southern Gaul, Spain, and North Africa west of Cyrenaica. This broad survey is augmented with case studies on select cities. Such an analysis of the late antique histories of baths, aqueducts, and spectacle buildings (theaters, amphitheaters, and circuses) shows that each of the building types had a distinct history and that public monuments were not a unitary group. It also reveals unexpectedly few regional trends, suggesting that these histories were broadly common across the West. Further, this study shows that each building type was reused differently, both in terms of purposes and chronology. Finally, by considering economic, technological, cultural and legal factors affecting patterns of use, abandonment and reuse, this study establishes that the primary cause for the transformations to public building was largely a change in euergetistic practices in late antiquity. Cities with access to imperial or other governmental patronage used and maintained their public monuments longer than those without. Together these observations demonstrate the complexities of urban change in this period and prove that the idea of a single pattern of decline in late antique cities is no longer tenable.

Department of Public Works compliance with measures for disabled access in public buildingsMonama, Nozuko January 2017 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Management, University of Witwatersrand, in partial fulfilment of the Degree of Masters of Management (in Public and Management Development)
February 2017 / Accessibility in the built environment has always created barriers for persons with disabilities. Accessibility in public buildings is a key factor for persons with disabilities in achieving livelihoods and independence. However, inaccessible public buildings limits the rights of persons with disabilities to equal participation and prevents them from being equal citizens. Persons with disabilities are often faced with barriers that limit them from actively participating in social and economic life. Many of these barriers are related to accessibility in the built environment.
This research report looked into the Department of Public Works’ Accessibility Programme. The accessibility programme intends to make all state-owned buildings accessible for persons with disabilities. The participants of the study were mostly implementers of the accessibility programme and participants from organisations of persons with disabilities.
Most of the participants acknowledged the work the Department of Public Works has done. However, they also noted shortcomings in implementing the accessibility programme. The lack of knowledge on disability issues and understanding on how to address accessibility in the built environment was a contributing factor to the ineffective and efficient accessibility programme. The recommendations of the study include inclusive disability programmes in the built environment in the planning, policy development, designing and completion stages. Education and advocacy are highly recommended at all stages of the implementation of the accessibility programme. / MT2017

A timeline through the architect Geraldo Vespaziano Puntoni.Beck, Sebastian Friedrich 25 April 2017 (has links)
This research is a systematization of Geraldo Vespaziano Puntoni\'s carrier as an architect and public servant, having as a background his work on the Department of Public Building (DOP), where he stayed from 1960 to 1990. Beyond DOP, the architect was commissioned to work in five others institutions and companies: Educational Buildings State Fund (FECE), State Company of Houses for the People (CECAP), São Paulo Electrical Centers (CESP) and Municipal Company of Urbanization (EMURB) and Welfare Institute of São Paulo (IPESP). During his stay at those institutions, the architect had several experiences and was able to try many different architectural and urban expressions. Starting with the question \"What is the architect\'s role in the development of a country, state and city?\", I chose a professional that dedicated half of his 60 years of work to the elaboration of projects for public institutions in São Paulo. This research shows the story of a man and public servant. The idea behind it is to explore the realm of public politics of the studied period and investigate just how much of this scenario influenced and have been influenced by the architect Geraldo Vespaziano Puntoni. The main objective of this work is to study the story behind those institutions and relate it to the architect\'s story, along with the most important aspects of the culture and modern imaginary of São Paulo. The gathering of data, organization and restitution of the architect\'s work, known for being embedded with characteristics of modern Brazilian architecture, helps to enrich the discussion about the role of the professional and its relation to the development of the urban space in the studied decades.

Les monuments publics en Asie Mineure à l’époque flavienne / The public buildings in Asia Minor under the Flavians (69/96 A.D.)Goubin, Yann 31 March 2012 (has links)
Our study handles the question of public buildings built in Asia Minor during the flavian Period (69/96 A.D.).Our researches led us to have a reflection about the different people intervening in the projects and to showsome traces of their activity. Even if they are rare, the textual sources, such as dedications, bring manyinformations about the evergetes, and offer some details on the cooperation between the patrons, the curatorsand the imperial administration. The detailed study of the architectural elements, revealing some productionskills, allowed us to have a reflection about the structure of workshops in Asia Minor and led us to offer, insome case, a view of their course between different buildings sites of the end of the first century A.D. Thisstudy naturally got associated with others handling the question of block construction, showing the importanteffort developed to achieve standardisation in Asia Minor, and more specifically at Ephesus under Domitian. We also studied the reception and spreading of setting models and showed the contrasted influence of Rome onthe flavian creations in Anatolia, because of the presence of strong cultural traditions in this country. Thus, limited endogenous creations show that local craftsmen were able to innovate, often using basis of ancienthellenistics models. Finally our study lead us to enhance the particular attraction for water buildings in AsiaMinor, through the many bathing facilities built under Vespasian in Lycia or the development of monumentalfountains in Asia under Domitian.
