Iterative Timing Recovery for Magnetic Recording Channels with Low Signal-to-Noise Ratio

Nayak, Aravind Ratnakar 07 July 2004 (has links)
Digital communication systems invariably employ an underlying analog communication channel. At the transmitter, data is modulated to obtain an analog waveform which is input to the channel. At the receiver, the output of the channel needs to be mapped back into the discrete domain. To this effect, the continuous-time received waveform is sampled at instants chosen by the timing recovery block. Therefore, timing recovery is an essential component of digital communication systems. A widely used timing recovery method is based on a phase-locked loop (PLL), which updates its timing estimates based on a decision-directed device. Timing recovery performance is a strong function of the reliability of decisions, and hence, of the channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Iteratively decodable error-control codes (ECCs) like turbo codes and LDPC codes allow operation at SNRs lower than ever before, thus exacerbating timing recovery. We propose iterative timing recovery, where the timing recovery block, the equalizer and the ECC decoder exchange information, giving the timing recovery block access to decisions that are much more reliable than the instantaneous ones. This provides significant SNR gains at a marginal complexity penalty over a conventional turbo equalizer where the equalizer and the ECC decoder exchange information. We also derive the Cramer-Rao bound, which is a lower bound on the estimation error variance of any timing estimator, and propose timing recovery methods that outperform the conventional PLL and achieve the Cramer-Rao bound in some cases. At low SNR, timing recovery suffers from cycle slips, where the receiver drops or adds one or more symbols, and consequently, almost always the ECC decoder fails to decode. Iterative timing recovery has the ability to corrects cycle slips. To reduce the number of iterations, we propose cycle slip detection and correction methods. With iterative timing recovery, the PLL with cycle slip detection and correction recovers most of the SNR loss of the conventional receiver that separates timing recovery and turbo equalization.

Performance and Implementation Aspects of Nonlinear Filtering

Hendeby, Gustaf January 2008 (has links)
Nonlinear filtering is an important standard tool for information and sensor fusion applications, e.g., localization, navigation, and tracking. It is an essential component in surveillance systems and of increasing importance for standard consumer products, such as cellular phones with localization, car navigation systems, and augmented reality. This thesis addresses several issues related to nonlinear filtering, including performance analysis of filtering and detection, algorithm analysis, and various implementation details. The most commonly used measure of filtering performance is the root mean square error (RMSE), which is bounded from below by the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB). This thesis presents a methodology to determine the effect different noise distributions have on the CRLB. This leads up to an analysis of the intrinsic accuracy (IA), the informativeness of a noise distribution. For linear systems the resulting expressions are direct and can be used to determine whether a problem is feasible or not, and to indicate the efficacy of nonlinear methods such as the particle filter (PF). A similar analysis is used for change detection performance analysis, which once again shows the importance of IA. A problem with the RMSE evaluation is that it captures only one aspect of the resulting estimate and the distribution of the estimates can differ substantially. To solve this problem, the Kullback divergence has been evaluated demonstrating the shortcomings of pure RMSE evaluation. Two estimation algorithms have been analyzed in more detail; the Rao-Blackwellized particle filter (RBPF) by some authors referred to as the marginalized particle filter (MPF) and the unscented Kalman filter (UKF). The RBPF analysis leads to a new way of presenting the algorithm, thereby making it easier to implement. In addition the presentation can possibly give new intuition for the RBPF as being a stochastic Kalman filter bank. In the analysis of the UKF the focus is on the unscented transform (UT). The results include several simulation studies and a comparison with the Gauss approximation of the first and second order in the limit case. This thesis presents an implementation of a parallelized PF and outlines an object-oriented framework for filtering. The PF has been implemented on a graphics processing unit (GPU), i.e., a graphics card. The GPU is a inexpensive parallel computational resource available with most modern computers and is rarely used to its full potential. Being able to implement the PF in parallel makes new applications, where speed and good performance are important, possible. The object-oriented filtering framework provides the flexibility and performance needed for large scale Monte Carlo simulations using modern software design methodology. It can also be used to help to efficiently turn a prototype into a finished product.

This dissertation investigates on the localization problem in wireless sensor networks. A performance analysis of localization techniques through simulations and the Cramér-Rao lower bound is presented. The effects of several parameters on the localization performance are investigated, including network topology and propagation environment. The simulation analysis considered localization techniques based on received signal strength observations, while the Cramér-Rao analysis considered also techniques based on the time of arrival and angle of arrival of the received signal. This work also investigated how the Cramér-Rao limit is affected by the observation bias in localization techniques based on the received signal strength. This bias is usually neglected in the literature, what may lead to imprecisions on the Cramér-Rao limit computation under certain propagation conditions. A new expression for this limit was derived for a simple estimator case, now considering the bias. With the development of this new expression, it was also derived a new expression for the Cramér-Rao lower bound considering the effects of lognormal fading and Nakagami fading on the propagation channel / Mestrado / Telecomunicações e Telemática / Mestre em Engenharia Elétrica

Fluorescence Molecular Tomography: A New Volume Reconstruction Method

Shamp, Stephen Joseph 06 July 2010 (has links)
Medical imaging is critical for the detection and diagnosis of disease, guided biopsies, assessment of therapies, and administration of treatment. While computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and ultra-sound (US) are the more familiar modalities, interest in yet other modalities continues to grow. Among the motivations are reduction of cost, avoidance of ionizing radiation, and the search for new information, including biochemical and molecular processes. Fluorescence Molecular Tomography (FMT) is one such emerging technique and, like other techniques, has its advantages and limitations. FMT can reconstruct the distribution of fluorescent molecules in vivo using near-infrared radiation or visible band light to illuminate the subject. FMT is very safe since non-ionizing radiation is used, and inexpensive due to the comparatively low cost of the imaging system. This should make it particularly well suited for small animal studies for research. A broad range of cell activity can be identified by FMT, making it a potentially valuable tool for cancer screening, drug discovery and gene therapy. Since FMT imaging is scattering dominated, reconstruction of volume images is significantly more computationally intensive than for CT. For instance, to reconstruct a 32x32x32 image, a flattened matrix with approximately 10¹°, or 10 billion, elements must be dealt with in the inverse problem, while requiring more than 100 GB of memory. To reduce the error introduced by noisy measurements, significantly more measurements are needed, leading to a proportionally larger matrix. The computational complexity of reconstructing FMT images, along with inaccuracies in photon propagation models, has heretofore limited the resolution and accuracy of FMT. To surmount the problems stated above, we decompose the forward problem into a Khatri-Rao product. Inversion of this model is shown to lead to a novel reconstruction method that significantly reduces the computational complexity and memory requirements for overdetermined datasets. Compared to the well known SVD approach, this new reconstruction method decreases computation time by a factor of up to 25, while simultaneously reducing the memory requirement by up to three orders of magnitude. Using this method, we have reconstructed images up to 32x32x32. Also outlined is a two step approach which would enable imaging larger volumes. However, it remains a topic for future research. In achieving the above, the author studied the physics of FMT, developed an extensive set of original computer programs, performed COMSOL simulations on photon diffusion, and unavoidably, developed visual displays.

Physics-Guided Machine Learning in Ocean Acoustics Using Fisher Information

Mortenson, Michael Craig 14 April 2022 (has links)
Waterborne acoustic signals carry information about the ocean environment. Ocean geoacoustic inversion is the task of estimating environmental parameters from received acoustic signals by matching the measured sound with the predictions of a physics-based model. A lower bound on the uncertainty associated with environmental parameter estimates, the Cramér-Rao bound, can be calculated from the Fisher information, which is dependent on derivatives of a physics-based model. Physics-based preconditioners circumvent the need for variable step sizes when computing numerical derivatives. This work explores the feasibility of using a neural network to perform geoacoustic inversion for environmental parameters and their associated uncertainties from ship noise spectrogram data. To train neural networks, a synthetic dataset is generated and tested for generalizability against 31 measurements taken during the SBCEX2017 study of the New England Mud Patch.

Building an Efficient Occupancy Grid Map Based on Lidar Data Fusion for Autonomous driving Applications

Salem, Marwan January 2019 (has links)
The Localization and Map building module is a core building block for designing an autonomous vehicle. It describes the vehicle ability to create an accurate model of its surroundings and maintain its position in the environment at the same time. In this thesis work, we contribute to the autonomous driving research area by providing a proof-of-concept of integrating SLAM solutions into commercial vehicles; improving the robustness of the Localization and Map building module. The proposed system applies Bayesian inference theory within the occupancy grid mapping framework and utilizes Rao-Blackwellized Particle Filter for estimating the vehicle trajectory. The work has been done at Scania CV where a heavy duty vehicle equipped with multiple-Lidar sensory architecture was used. Low level sensor fusion of the different Lidars was performed and a parallelized implementation of the algorithm was achieved using a GPU. When tested on the frequently used datasets in the community, the implemented algorithm outperformed the scan-matching technique and showed acceptable performance in comparison to another state-of-art RBPF implementation that adapts some improvements on the algorithm. The performance of the complete system was evaluated under a designed set of real scenarios. The proposed system showed a significant improvement in terms of the estimated trajectory and provided accurate occupancy representations of the vehicle surroundings. The fusion module was found to build more informative occupancy grids than the grids obtained form individual sensors.

Kasch, Stefanie 16 November 2023 (has links)
Comprehensive Flow Cytometric Characterization of Bronchoalveolar Lavage Cells Indicates Comparable Phenotypes Between Asthmatic and Healthy Horses But Functional Lymphocyte Differences

Gressler, A. Elisabeth, Lübke, Sabrina, Wagner, Bettina, Arnold, Corinna, Lohmann, Katharina L., Schnabel, Christiane L. 20 October 2023 (has links)
Equine asthma (EA) is a highly relevant disease, estimated to affect up to 20% of all horses, and compares to human asthma. The pathogenesis of EA is most likely immune-mediated, yet incompletely understood. To study the immune response in the affected lower airways, mixed leukocytes were acquired through bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and the cell populations were analyzed on a single-cell basis by flow cytometry (FC). Samples of 38 horses grouped as respiratory healthy or affected by mild to moderate (mEA) or severe EA (sEA) according to their history, clinical signs, and BAL cytology were analyzed. Using FC, BAL cells and PBMC were comprehensively characterized by cell surface markers ex vivo. An increased percentage of DH24A+ polymorphonuclear cells, and decreased percentages of CD14+ macrophages were detected in BAL from horses with sEA compared to healthy horses or horses with mEA, while lymphocyte proportions were similar between all groups. Independently of EA, macrophages in BAL were CD14+CD16+, which contrasts the majority of CD14+CD16- classical monocytes in PBMC. Percentages of CD16-expressing BAL macrophages were reduced in BAL from horses with sEA compared to healthy horses. While PBMC lymphocytes predominantly contain CD4+ T cells, B cells and few CD8+ T cells, BAL lymphocytes comprised mainly CD8+ T cells, fewer CD4+ T cells and hardly any B cells. These lymphocyte subsets' distributions were similar between all groups. After PMA/ionomycin stimulation in vitro, lymphocyte activation (CD154 and T helper cell cytokine expression) was analyzed in BAL cells of 26 of the horses and group differences were observed (p=0.01-0.11). Compared to healthy horses' BAL, CD154+ lymphocytes from horses with mEA, and CD4+IL-17A+ lymphocytes from horses with sEA were increased in frequency. Activated CD4+ T helper cells were more frequent in asthmatics' (mEA, sEA) compared to healthy horses' PBMC lymphocytes. In summary, FC analysis of BAL cells identified increased polymorphonuclear cells frequencies in sEA as established, while macrophage percentages were mildly reduced, and lymphocyte populations remained unaffected by EA. Cytokine production differences of BAL lymphocytes from horses with sEA compared to healthy horses' cells point towards a functional difference, namely increased local type 3 responses in sEA.

Rao's Quadratic Entropy, Risk Management and Portfolio Theory

Koumou, Nettey Boevi Gilles 24 April 2018 (has links)
This thesis is about the concept of diversification and its measurement in portfolio theory. Diversification is one of the major components of portfolio theory. It helps to reduce or ultimately to eliminate portfolio risk. Thus, its measurement and management is of fundamental importance in finance and insurance domains as risk measurement and management. Consequently, several measures of portfolio diversification were proposed, each based on a different criterion . Unfortunately, none of them has proven totally satisfactory. All have drawbacks and limited applications. Developing a coherent measure of portfolio diversification is therefore an active research area in investment management. In this thesis, a novel, coherent, general and rigorous theoretical framework to manage and quantify portfolio diversification inspiring from Rao (1982a)’s Quadratic Entropy (RQE), a general approach to measuring diversity, is proposed. More precisely, this thesis demonstrates that when RQE is judiciously calibrated it becomes a valid class of portfolio diversification measures summarizing complex features of portfolio diversification in a simple manner and provides at the same time a unified theory that includes many previous contributions. Next, this thesis presents two applications of the proposed class of portfolio diversification measures. In the first application, new formulations of maximum diversification strategy of Choueifaty and Coignard (2008) is provided based on the proposed class of measures. These new formalizations clarify the investment problem behind the MD strategy, help identify the source of its strong out-of-sample performance relative to other diversified portfolios, and suggest new directions along which its out-of-sample performance can be improved. In the second application, a novel and useful formulation of the mean-variance utility function is provided based on the proposed class of measures. This new formulation significantly improves the mean-variance model understanding, in particular in terms of asset pricing. It also offers new directions along which the mean-variance model can be improved without additional computational costs.
