Translation of Culture-Specific Drink and Food Items in “Blackberry Wine” by Joanne Harris / Gėrimų ir valgių pavadinimų vertimas Joanne Harris romane „Gervuogių vynas” į lietuvių kalbąDaugėlaitė, Vytautė 05 August 2008 (has links)
The Master of Arts thesis “Translation of Culture-Specific Drink and Food Items in “Blackberry Wine” by Joanne Harris” presents the analysis of translation strategies applied in translating cultural realia, namely drink and food references in Milda Dyke’s Lithuanian translation of "Blackberry Wine", as well as a short analysis of the translation strategies and their function.
The consideration of different translation strategies that were proposed by prominent scholars, such as Mona Baker (1992), Javier-Franco Aixelá and Eirlys E.Davies (2003) in translation studies, and the analysis of the strategies employed by the translator Milda Dyke translating the novel "Blackberry Wine" into Lithuanian are discussed in this thesis. Theoretical aspects are applied in the analytical part, taking into account the most frequent strategies employed for the translation of culture-specific drink and food entities by the translator and the comment on these choices exhibits peculiar cultural aspects. Futhermore, the ways how to handle problems related to the translation of culture-specific drink and food items from English into Lithuanian are analyzed and presented in the analytical part.
This paper investigates the two major groups of cultural references, specifically the names of food and drink items, which frequently cause rather complex and sometimes controversial issues while translating literary works. The translation of culture-specific drink and food entities involve the employment of... Darbe nagrinėjama skirtingos vertimo strategijos, kurios buvo pateikiamos vertimo srityje tokių žinomų mokslininkų kaip Mona Baker (1992), Javier-Franco Aixelá, Eirlys E.Davies (2003). Be to, analizuojama vertėjos Mildos Dyke vartojamos vertimo strategijos į lietuvių kalbą.

"Quelle frasi sono il nostro latino": Idioletti, linguacultura e realia in Lessico famigliare di Natalia Ginzburg : Analisi contrastiva di un campione rappresentativo di due versioni svedesi e della versione originale / "Quelle frasi sono il nostro latino": Idiolects, languaculture and realia in Natalia ginzburg's Lessico famigliare : Contrastive analysis of a representative sample from two swedish versions of the italian original.Christerson, Annika January 2022 (has links)
In this thesis a comparison is being made between two different translations into Swedish of the Italian novel Lessico famigliare by Natalia Ginzburg from 1963. The first translation (Familjen) was published in 1981 and was made by Ingalisa Munck and the second (Familjelexikon) was made by Johanna Hedenberg and published in 2021. Due to the limited scope of the project, samples to be studied based on qualitative analysis have been chosen from the source text. The main focus has been on the strategies employed by the translators when it comes to culturespecific elements, how they have chosen to deal with dialects and idiolects in the novel, and how they have chosen to deal with foreign words in the text. Some other aspects have also been taken into account, such as rhythm and structure of the text for instance. One aim has been to see if it were possible to discern to what extent, on the basis of the chosen strategies, the translated texts could be considered as adapted to the receiving culture (strategy of acceptability) or as preserving the languageculture of the source text. However, great attention has also been directed towards other factors such as differences due to the time span between the two translations or the individuality of the translator. The analysis has shown that both of the translators show tendencies to move between the above-described attitudes toward the original text, but that the translation by Munck from 1981 shows less adherence to the original text and a more open attitude to freer translation alternatives. The most obvious example of this is the total restructuring of portions of the source text, reconstruction of sentences and formation of new paragraphs. The translation by Hedenberg demonstrates a will to adhere the source text in all these respects, sometimes also replicating its musicality, rhythm and alliterations. However, as shown by the comparison between individual examples, elements of the two attitudes can be found in both translations. It is not possible to reach a full conclusion based on a qualitative analysis. Furthermore, the rendition of foreign words suggests that the translators have been working with different types of model readers in mind: Munck with a reader that values the mixing of languages in the novel and the rendering of the bourgeoise Italian culture of the Levi family (and/or with a greater comprehension of French) and Hedenberg with a reader with a greater interest in understanding the text without being disturbed by elements of French in the dialogue – and/or with a lesser knowledge of the French language. Based primarily on the treatment the word “negro”, observations were made about the ageing of translations and the taboos they can reveal in a specific culture.

Tra i misteri di Accabadora e Själabarn: Il mondo sardo trasferito in Scandinavia : Un’analisi traduttologica degli elementi culturospecifici nella traduzione svedese dell’opera testando l’applicabilità del modello di Jan Pedersen / Among the Mysteries of Accabadora and Själabarn: The Sardianian World transferred to Scandinavia : A Translation Analysis of Culture Specific Items of the Swedish Translation of the novel Accabadora by Testing the Applicabilty of Jan Pedersen's ModelFrigerio, Sara January 2023 (has links)
This study analyses the various culture-specific items known as realia words from the Italian novel Accabadora, written by Michela Murgia (2009) and translated into Swedish by Barbro Andersson (2012). Moreover, this paper also examines the various translation strategies used in rendering the specific culture items and their grade of frequency based on Jan Pedersen’s model. Finally, this study aims at testing the validity of Pedersen’s translation strategy model mainly aimed for subtitling and audio-visual translations on a literary text. A total of 160 culture specific items were identified and further subcategorized based on Bruno Osimo’s (2011) classification of realia. The ethnographic, geographic, social-political categories as well as the Sardinian realia were mostly translated by means of source text-oriented strategies while the category of idiomatic expressions displayed a slightly different outcome in which the target-text strategies were the most predominant but still featured by source target-text oriented strategies. The most frequent translation strategy in the first category was retention and direct translation whereas in the category of idiomatic expressions, cultural substitution and paraphrase followed by retention were the most frequently used strategies. Finally, the possible reasons for the choice of source-text versus target-text oriented strategies were further discussed.

Особенности перевода реалий в жанре фэнтези (на материале сериала «Игра престолов» в переводе “Lostfilm”) : магистерская диссертация / Specific features of realia translation in the fantasy genre (based on the TV series “Game of Thrones” translated by “Lostfilm”)Минина, Ю. А., Minina, Yu. A. January 2020 (has links)
This master’s thesis provides comparative analysis of realia in the English and Russian versions of the “Game of Thrones” series. The research material includes 218 realia, selected by the method of continuous sampling. The theoretical basis of the work is S. Vlakhov and S. Florin’s classification, which distinguishes geographic, ethnographic and socio-political realia. All the three types are found in the English original and correlated with the Russian translation. Within each group, there are made comparative quantitative observations, which are afterwards presented in the form of diagrams. The research results can be used in terminography when compiling thematic and comparative dictionaries; the latter can be used for future translators of the series and book studied. The paper can also provide materials for training sessions on the theory and practice of translation and for special courses on literary translation.

Martina di Poggio di Giugno : Analisi del trasferimento della linguacultura svedese di Astrid Lindgren in un contesto italiano, con particolare attenzione alla gestione dei realia / Madicken på Junibacken : Översättningsteoretisk analys av överföringen av Astrid Lindgrens svenskspråkiga kulturmiljöer till en italiensk kontext, med särskilt fokus på hanteringen av kulturspecifika element (s.k. realia)Malin, Mendes January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines the translation of culture-specific phenomena in children’s literature with a theoretical framework based on “translation studies”. In the translation of children’s literature, translators generally choose translations that brings the content closer to the target culture, creating an “acceptable” translation. At the same time, these choices distance the translation from the culture of the original text. The opposite, translations which remain faithful to the original, are called “adequate” with the terminology of translation studies. This thesis presents the result of the parallel reading of the original Madicken på Junibacken, a children’s book written by famous Swedish author Astrid Lindgren, and the Italian version, Martina di Poggio di Giugno, translated by Fiorella Onesti and Isabella Fanti (Salani, Gl’Istrici, 2003). During the reading of the two books, the phenomena specific to the Swedish language culture (realia, in translation studies’ terminology) were collected, listed, grouped according to type of realia (names of persons and places, food, idiomatic expressions, songs and games) and the translation strategy used. The grouping according to translation strategy took as its starting point the ten strategies described by Osimo (2008). The analysis confirmed the initial hypothesis that Martina di Poggio di Giugno would be, like many other translations of children’s books, an “acceptable” translation. A complimentary analysis of corresponding realia in two other translations of Astrid Lindgren books, the Italian versions of Pippi Longstocking and Bill Bergson, Master Detective, showed that one realia can be translated in different ways, leading to different results. The translations in the second phase of the analysis were deemed as slightly less “acceptable” and therefore closer to equivalence with the original texts.

Reálie v učebnicích češtiny pro cizince / Facts in the textbooks of Czech for foreignersMachuldová, Lenka January 2013 (has links)
The aim of my work is to analyze Czech language textbooks for foreigners in terms of inclusion and presentation of cultural studies. In the theoretical part I attempt to outline the development of Czech courses for foreigners and Czech as a foreign language, as well as summarize the current knowledge of area studies and explain their interconnectedness with the socio- cultural competence. In the second, practical part of my work, I focus on whether facts in various Czech language textbooks for foreigners are presented implicitly or explicitly, whether the facts presented in contrast with the culture are expected from the student and whether the facts in these textbooks are practiced and tested. In addition, I tried to capture the presence or absence of geographical information, historical information, information regarding cultural characteristics of the Czech and their lifestyle, information about English and its development, information regarding speech courtesy and behaviour, information regarding Czech literature, art, science, sports, Czech food, information regarding Czech politics and other possible facts. The analysis of each textbook is its assessment and the recommendation for teachers. In conclusion, I summarize all discovered knowledge regarding area studies in Czech language textbooks for...

Indian Cultural Phenomena in Translations of Salman Rushdie’s Novels into Lithuanian / Indų Kultūra Salman Rushdie Romanų Vertimuose Į Lietuvių KalbąTichonovienė, Indrė 16 August 2007 (has links)
The concepts of translation and culture as well as the change in the perception towards these phenomena are revealed in the theoretical part of this study. As Indian cultural phenomena are the subject of the work, the notion of cultural realia, different their classifications and possible translation procedures are also supplied. It was noticed that cultural realia comprise not only linguistic aspects in ‘translating’ different cultures but non-linguistic elements as well, therefore, cultural phenomena becomes the more adequate definition. In the empirical part of the study, the novels of Salman Rushdie and their translations are analysed in order to investigate how Indian cultural phenomena are translated into Lithuanian. The results obviously proved that translation procedures of naturalization and notes, additions, glosses are the most frequently applied. Though numerous Indian cultural phenomena have been rendered with explanations for the readers, there are more cases where additional information would be appreciable in the translations of Rushdie’s works.
