Sustainability indicators for monitoring tourism route development in Africa

Viljoen, Francois 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Geography and Environmental Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / Tourism routes or networks have been identified as a tool for local economic development and could also contribute towards social development of communities, and conservation of the natural environment. In order to determine whether the development of routes have the desired effects on the economy, society and the environment, a set of sustainability indicators (SIs) needs to be developed to measure the possible effects. The aim of this study is to identify appropriate SIs that could be applied to tourism route development in Africa; to identify a suitable method of identifying route-specific indicators; and to test the suitability of these indicators in two case studies, namely the Caprivi Wetlands Paradise route and the Barotse Trails Route. The study area comprises part of the proposed Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) Transfrontier Conservation Area and includes the south-western part of Zambia and the Caprivi region in north-eastern Namibia. The objectives of the study are to determine the elements of a sustainable tourism route from existing literature; to identify a framework for selecting both generic and route-specific SIs; to select appropriate indicators for tourism route development in the African context; and to do a baseline assessment for the two case study routes to determine the suitability of the selected methods and indicators. Data were collected by making use of structured interviews and focus groups. Collected data on individual businesses are combined and presented collectively for each route by making use of sustainability assessment maps (SAMs). In addition, a method of identifying route-specific indicators was selected which makes use of the pressure-state-response (PSR) framework previously used for identifying environmental indicators. The results of the study show that the identified indicators provide a means of determining overall sustainability of routes or networks based on the principle of the triple bottom line. SAMs are a good way of presenting data to stakeholders in a simplified way. The results also indicate that the PSR framework can be adequately adapted to identify indicators in conjunction with communities in a participative manner. Recommendations are made for improving the overall sustainability of routes or networks and for increasing their network functionality. Recommendations include the possibility of investigating the use of geographic information systems in mapping SIs. KEYWORDS: Sustainability indicators; tourism routes; monitoring; pressure-state-response; sustainability assessment maps; tourism networks; route development.

Da Silva, Andréa Betânia 20 March 2014 (has links)
This thesis investigates the trajectory of Violeiros Festivals held in Northeast Brazil having as common thread of the research the oral poetry, notably the improvisation singing. To build a cartography of these festivals, the research reflects on the social changes that led to the emergence of this more modern structure, the festival, with elements facing the urban spectacle as a transformation from a more traditional practice, o pé de parede, which occurred in rural areas. The route between the permanence of a modality and the strengthening of other involves the production of meetings and conferences which occupy the spaces of improvised singing, known as repente. The first part, entitled Improvisation and pé de parede, aims at the structural nature of this type of oral poetry, focusing on the process of creating improvised verses, as well as thinking about performance from the tripod voice, body and image, which modulates the “repentista” profile. It also offers a discussion of the involvement of the singers and “cantadoras” with the universe of “cantoria” since childhood, from the analysis of the interviews conducted during the research. The second part, entitled Festivals: between routes and waves, addresses festivals and aims at presenting a trajectory from the events held in Europe and how the model adopted in Brazil found inspiration in the pattern still in practice in Brazilian Popular Music Festivals for example. Although the structure had already been used in a wide tradition of conferences and meetings performed in the 1940s, the noun “festival” started to be adopted only from the 1970s. The research revealed the existence of routes that drive the movement of the festivals. At the same time, there are changes in the configuration of events, changing aesthetics in relation to the viola, the verse and the voice as well as the inclusion in the cultural circuit industry, encouraging the creation of shows geared for mass consumption and making use of the media as maintenance and expansion channels.

Circuler en Asie Mineure cistaurique du IVème siècle avant notre ère au principat / Circulation and Mobility in Cistauric Asia Minor from the 4th Century BC to the Principate

Roelens-Flouneau, Hélène 22 June 2013 (has links)
During the Hellenistic Period there was an intensification of movement within Anatolia. After Alexander’s conquest, Asia Minor became, in effect, for Greeks and Macedonians a necessary stepping stone for travel to the East. This thesis begins by studying the infrastructure which facilitated the mobility of people and goods, in particular roads and their facilities, as well as navigable rivers and maritime routes which connected the harbours of Asia Minor. Different case studies demonstrate the existence of local, regional and supra-regional road-networks in this area. The second part of this thesis explores the influence of institutions on the organisation of circulation and the different ways in which authorities could encourage the circulation of goods and people – includingthe creation of infrastructure, the control of mobility, and different economic and financial policies. In conclusion, this thesis examines the conditions of travel from the perspective of the traveller, including religious preparations, the choice of means of transport and accomodation as well as the means travellers used for planning their journeys and navigating and what these tell us about how space and distance were conceived.

Optimization routes of planning and implementation in large-scale urban development projects : some learning from France for China / Conduites d’optimisation en aménagement et mise-en-œuvre dans projets de développement urbain en large échelle : des leçons françaises pour la Chine

Chen, Tingting 25 May 2012 (has links)
The main ideas of this thesis come from realities in China. The main objective ofthis thesis is trying to offer some suggestions for cities in China by learning fromFrance, on the topic of planning and implementation of large-scale urbandevelopment projects. Understanding the background, mechanism and policy ofurban planning in developed countries may help to cope with problems in ourcountry and then to better construct Chinese cities. Firstly, the dissertation defines the basic concepts, contents and framework of large-scale urban development projects. The origin of problems and difficulties in large-scale urban development projects is then discussed. Based on empirical study, the dissertation analyzes some typical large-scale urban development projects in France and then evaluates them. In modern society, planners should consider many uncertain indicators in urban development. They should also be effective in regulation of space and coordinate conflict of interests in large-scale urban development. The dissertation raises a basic theoritical framework in those three aspects and explores how French largescale urban development projects cope with these challenges. By three optimizing routes which are reforming of land-use planning, strengthen regulation of urban space and improvement of coordination mechanism, the planning and implementation of large-scale urban development project in France have been optimized. By continuous reforming, adjustment and improvement, many French large-scale urban development projects successfully finished the planning objectives. The social, economic and environment effects have also been well embodied.PLU (Plans Locaux d’Urbanisme) has been studied for the reform of land-use planning. Le "cahier des charges "and the role of the "Architect Coordinateur" have been analyzed for the regulation of urban space. ZAC (Zone d’Aménagement Concerte), SEM (Société d’Ecoonomie Mixte) and public participation institution have been studied in aspect of coordination institution. Based on comparativestudy of situation in China and successful experience in France, suggestionshave been made for optimizing Chinese large-scale urban development projects. The three optimizing routes are connected tightly, which means they influencethe course of urban construction together. Isolated route could not solve theproblems. Therefore, the dissertation suggests an ensemble optimizing route inChinese large-scale urban development projects. The reform of urban planningand implementation institution should improve land-use planning, regulation ofurban space and coordination mechanism all together. The urban planning andmanagement system should be in a direction of integrative improvement.

The Miqat of al-Juhfa: a historical and archaeological study

Alsubaie, Mohammad 15 August 2018 (has links)
The Mīqāt of al-Juhfa is located in the west of Saudi Arabia about 187 km northwest of the Holy City of Mecca. Al-Juhfa is one of the five fixed places called Mawāqīt, or entry stations to the pilgrimage (Hajj). These Mawāqīt were designated during the early Islamic period for any pilgrim comes through them with the intention of Hajj. During the early Abbasid period, al-Juhfa was the largest occupied Mīqāt in the Islamic world. This study focuses primarily on historical and archaeological aspects of the Mīqāt of al-Juhfa during the early Islamic period. To illustrate these aspects, the study analyzed many primary sources that mention al-Juhfa in order to reconstruct the historical and cultural development of the site and to establish the extent to which it functions as an urban center. The study benefited from important information provided by these sources in this respect, such as the chronology of the site, its strategic location, topographical features, the nature of the landscape at different times, the function of specific objects, human activities that took place at the site, and factors that led to its prosperity and decline. The study also undertook a fieldwork at al-Juhfa site—primarily archaeological survey and excavation. This fieldwork enabled us to test the results of the textual analysis and to reveal other characteristics of the site (such as its cultural role, urban elements, planning and defences, architectural functions, building technique, building material, and other features). Moreover, the study analyzed both the formal and technical qualities of all archaeological discoveries on the site, comparing them with their analogues at other early Islamic sites in the Middle East. The study derived many results that clearly indicate the great importance of al-Juhfa as an urban center characterized by several urban functions during the early Abbasid period in the late of 8th century until its importance began to decline gradually between the second half of 11th century and the first half of 12th century. This chronology is supported by both written sources and the archaeological evidence. Several architectural elements and a collection of archaeological finds of different pieces of pottery, ceramic, glass, worked stone, and metal were discovered at al-Juhfa. These discoveries provide us with more information about the extent of mutual influence and active interaction between various cultures during pre-Islamic period as well as the high cultural and commercial level achieved by al-Juhfa and the relationship it had with other Islamic sites in the Middle East. / Graduate / 2019-06-26

Percursos urbanos : novos olhares na arte contemporânea

Angeli, Juliana Correa Hermes January 2007 (has links)
This dissertation presents the analysis of eight art works by different contemporary artists who utilize urban routes as a constitutive part of their poietics and poetics. By studying spatial and temporal changes since the industrial period, as well as how urban spatial displacements and their present acquired meanings are structured, we seek to comprehend for what motives a poietic of urban routes should persist today. We have noted how contemporary artists have re-signified urban spaces and the people who interact with them by means of their displacements or the appropriation of other people’s daily routes, and, by using routes, they have developed new gazes in relation to these questions of contemporary art.

Otimização de rotas de helicópteros offshore utilizando algoritmo genético / Optmization of routes of offshore helicopters using genetic algorithm

Motta, Allan Ronney Vianna 19 September 2013 (has links)
This with the discovery of oil in the Pre-Salt layer, in oceanic regions of Brazil, it is aroused the need to improve technological devices of analysis, to ensure the sustainability of the system of fuel production in the country. From there we conjecture about the problem of air traffic control of offshore helicopters, which give logistical support to oil platforms and to optimization of routes. In this job, we proposed to minimize routes, thus decreasing the fuel consumption of these aircraft, as well as to optimize the time spent on travel between airports and platforms, using the heuristics methods of Genetic Algorithms. To perform a better analysis, we made two deployments, the first with Holland's Genetic Algorithm and the second with Genetic Algorithm Based on Abstract Data Types - GAADT, getting results with better performance in the second implementation.

Despite all the efforts to produce and develop a vaccine against the disease, there is not a preventive therapy. Nowadays, the disease management is through the eradication of the mosquito vector Aedes aegypti. Despite the several options of synthetic insecticides available for management programs of vector populations, the emergence of resistant populations is presented as an obstacle in mosquito control vector. In addition to monitoring these resistant populations, it became evident that molecular studies may be the key to the sustainable management of these vectors. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the changes in protein expression of Ae. aegypti larvae treated with the organic larvicide m-pentadecadienil-phenol, a phenolic lipid isolated from Myracrodruon urundeuva seeds to elucidate the putative mechanisms of detoxification and molecular response to this compound. For this, two-dimensional electrophoresis (isoelectric focusing followed by electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel under denaturing conditions - SDS-PAGE) of third-instar larvae treated with m-pentadecadienil-phenol, at sublethal concentrations (LC50 10.16 microg.mL-1) was performed. The results were compared to a non-treated group. Thirteen spots were identified as differentially expressed, and twelve were consistently identified in databases analysis of the spectra obtained by mass spectrometry (ESI-Q-ToF). After analysis of the pathways in which these proteins are involved, it was proposed that the larvicide m-pentadecadienil-phenol elicits the overexpression of proteins that promote the formation of more efficient barriers and that once inside the cells, it promotes oxidative stress which leads to increased lipid degradation metabolism, destabilization of lysosomal membrane, increased metabolism in response to stress due to the molecule’s toxicity and possibly results in programmed cell death (apoptosis).

Optimisation des procédures de départ et d'arrivée dans une zone terminale / Optimal design of SIDs/STARs in terminal maneuvering area

Zhou, Jun 28 April 2017 (has links)
This thesis proposes a methodology for the optimization of departure and arrival routes in the Terminal Maneuvering Area (TMA). The design of these routes takes into account the configuration and environment around airports, and the related constraints, in particular the avoidance of obstacles and the separation between routes. We propose a mathematical formulation leading to a combinatorial optimization problem, as well as efficient ad hoc resolution methods for the problem. The problem is solved in two steps. First, we design an individual route avoiding obstacles with respect to minimum route length by using a Branch and Bound (B&B) method. Afterwards, the design of multiple routes is solved by two different approaches: a B&B-based approach (where routes are generated sequentially in a given order) and a Simulated Annealing approach (where routes are generated simultaneously). The simulation results of a set of (artificial and real) test problems show the efficiency of our approach.
