Previous issue date: 2015-09-02 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) / Since 2004 the city of Lins (São Paulo) receives proportionately the largest flow of African students in São Paulo. Early in our research had about 140 students from the Portuguese Speaking Countries (PALOP): Angola, Cape Verde, Sao Tome & Principe, Mozambique and Guinea Bissau. There they live and study at the University Center of Lins (Unilins). However, are overweight young people from Angola, about 120, are the only ones who are enunciated as Angolan community. By stating this discourse, African students tout and negotiate a set of representations, state differences and promote identification processes. Thus, this work aims specifically foregrounding the experiences of these young Angolan students in Brazilian society. That there is an ethnic character positioning played by students is, and this is the hypothesis of this study, enrolled assignment expression of blackness, historical and daily to people of African descent in their collective experience. In other words, students in their stay in
Brazil undergo a process of racialization. And, in response to this denial produced by a process ethnization a positioning. Which in turn articulates intersected way these two sociological divisions (race and ethnicity). Thus, as important as the intersection and articulation of these two divisions, the form, the process, the "how" students perform this agency and negotiation is critical. You know how, in what way these students are building through complex cultural processes of identity and difference figures. From this derives the following specific objectives, though no less important: i) how and why Brazil is presented as a destination for these students? ii.) As the Angolan students perceive themselves in front of the Brazilian social formation? For if on the one hand, the particulars used to identify contribute to better understand their narratives about tensions and difficulties they experience in this new socio-cultural context; on the other, the choice of Brazil as a privileged destination for these young people is closely linked to the relations that Brazil has with Angola and other countries of Palop.

The Tales of Interracial Relationships - How Interracial Couples in Sweden Experience Being Treated in Everyday LifeKaranja, Tania Njoki January 2019 (has links)
Race ideologies and thoughts about racial hygiene are things that have characterized Swedish history since World War II. The term race has been, and still is today, a controversial topic in Sweden, and has been replaced by the concept of ethnicity both in the academic and public world. Thoughts of race and/ or ethnicity linked to sexuality have been explored to little extent within the Swedish context. The focus of this thesis is on how interracial and/ or interethnic couples define themselves, and how they experience being perceived and treated by their social surroundings in a Swedish context. The results reveal that the couples define themselves in different ways, referring to ethnic origin or descriptions of visible differences in regard to skin and hair color. It is less common for couples to talk about themselves in terms of racial differences. The results also show that the couples experience that they are met by stereotypical notions of interracial relationships, more specifically linked to the non-white partner, in both close as well as more distant social settings. These notions often have an exotifying and sexualized character, where the assumptions of the non-white partner being sexually exotic is made.

Racial Choice Pathways to Distress: The Racialization of Latinx Mental HealthFiguereo, Victor Junior January 2020 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Rocio Calvo / Racial choice, an aspect of racialization via racial categorization, may position Latinx individuals into differential pathways to well-being or distress. The psychological distress rates of Latinxs differ by ethnic group, racial choice and Medicaid coverage. However, little is known about how these factors relate to one another to impact psychological distress. The three studies of this dissertation use nine years of pooled data (N=34,201) from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), 2010-2018. The NHIS is a national and annual survey that is telephonically administered to track the health and mental health status of individuals living in the United States. Study 1 examined the relationship between racial choice (Black, Other vs. White) and psychological distress (moderate, serious levels vs. low) among panethnic and ethnic group (Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Dominican) samples of Latinx individuals. Findings revealed that Black racial choice is significantly related to higher levels of distress for Mexicans and Cubans, but not for Puerto Ricans and Dominicans. Study 2 examined the moderating role of ethnic group in the relationship between Medicaid coverage, racial choice and psychological distress. Findings revealed that Medicaid coverage decrease the odds of distress for Black-Puerto Rican and -Dominican respondents compared to Black-Mexicans and -Cubans. Study 3 examined whether immigrant status and socioeconomic status (SES) are significant correlates to racial choice. Findings revealed that immigrant status and low SES have significant but different associations with choosing Black as a race over White. These findings show that racial choice matters in the lives of Latinxs and may create pathways to different levels of distress. Special attention on the reasons behind Latinx racial choice is needed to further understand the impact of racialization on Latinx mental health. The findings of each study are further discussed in their corresponding chapters. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2020. / Submitted to: Boston College. Skapade vi "dödssmittan"? : En kritisk diskursanalys av den svenska nyhetsrapporteringen vid utbrottet av ebola och covid-19 / Did we create “the fatal infection”? : A critical discourse analysis of the Swedish news reporting at the outbreak of ebola and covid-19Österberg, Anna, Smeds, Olivia January 2020 (has links)
The outbreak of ebola 2014 and the outbreak of covid-19 2019 affected our societies in a lot of ways, and some of the consequences were more unexpected than others. One of these consequences is the appearance of stigmatization and racism against ethnic groups. The purpose of this thesis is to describe how the swedish news media (Dagens Nyheter, Aftonbladet and Svenska Dagbladet) construct and maintain the image of the ebolavirus and the coronavirus. Our goal is to explain how the media can have the power to influence society’s general perception on the ethnic groups that live in the geographic areas where the virus outbreaks occurred. We will explain how general perceptions based on the construction of discourses can lead to racism and racialization, which will be explained by the field of political ecology. Our critical discourse analysis applied on the news media, concluded that the media mainly follows a discourse that tend to create a distinction between “us” in the west and “them” in the Third World (Africa and Asia) by blaming them and their ways of living as a cause of the viruses. This, together with a general way of creating fear and speculation, make prejudice and racialization occur. By applying the theory of political ecology which lay focus on the social injustice based on geographical location; we could draw the conclusion that virus outbreaks occur due to human exploitation of the nature. The exploitation leads to changes in the nature’s metabolism, which take form in crises such as virus outbreaks.

“Everyday racism is not something that keeps me up at night” : The second-generation Afro-Swedes experience of public spaces as racialized and gendered bodies.Abdullahi, Malleel January 2022 (has links)
This thesis aims to understand how the second-generation Afro-Swedes experience everyday racism in public spaces as racialized and gendered bodies. The three key dimensions of study are to recognize (1) blackness in public space, (2) experiences of everyday racism in public space, and (3) coping strategies to everyday racism. These three dimensions are gathered from six participants’ narratives done through semi-structured interviews. The thesis reveals that public spaces are based on lived experiences. The second-generation Afro-Swedes are likely to suffer from emotional damage while exposed to racism and discrimination acts in public spaces. The collective notion amongst the select group is that feeling unsafe and unwelcomed in predominantly white spaces hinders their mobility patterns. The internal individualization of the concept of blackness is additional; however, there are similarities in how the Swedish society misses the individual aspect of their identity and groups black people as a collective. The thesis further concludes that everyday racism is a product of structural racism and is thus the aspect society should focus on the most. More research needs to be done regarding second-generation Afro-Swedes and black people in Sweden about spatial processes of race and the interconnection with gender, focusing on the embodiment of space rather than segregation.

becoming and belonging : narratives of negotiating racial mixedness, femininity, and sexualityGrollmuss, Nora January 2022 (has links)
This study is about how eight mixed-race women, residing in urban Sweden, experience their own becoming through body and sexuality and through the way they experience that other individuals and the outer world view them. The methods used are ethnographic interviewing and autoethnographic writing. The theoretical framework is mainly located in the field of feminist and anti-racist phenomenology and includes becoming, belonging, intersubjectivity, disidentification, and affect theory. I find that the women of this study become through negotiation of circulating images, stigmas, and norms and that becoming is a corporeal process that is felt and thought. We create belongings through our becoming.
