Drum readers then and now : a linguistic investigation of some of the ways in which readers' identities are contructed in two copies of Drum magazine in 1951 and 2001.

Msibi, Phindile Muriel. January 2002 (has links)
This dissertation explores how written discourses of Drum editors' and readers' letters linguistically construct social identities of the Drum audience, and how this identity construction is intimately linked with socio-historical, socio-cultural and socio-political contexts in which Drum appears in 1951 and 2001. Basically, this study is a contrastive analysis of the audience construction at two significant dates in the life of a South African publication, Drum magazine: March 1951, when the magazine was first published, and 7 June 2001, fifty years later when the magazine is read in a vastly changed socio-politico-cultural context. Data collection was based on the "Readers' Page" in two copies of Drum, one published in March 1951 and the other in 7 June 2001. In each copy of the magazine, the focus is on the editor's letter which asks for the readers' contributions and gives recommendations on the types of letters he is hoping to attract, and one reader's letter from each of the same chosen copies of Drum which the editor publishes. The cover pages of both copies of Drum are used to investigate whether they foreground or reinforce the images of Drum readers. Another set of data comes from an unstructured interview of the current Drum magazine editor. Findings in this study indicate that the ideal Drum audience in 1951 is the African middle class scholar who is a good writer, whereas in 2001, good quality writing is compromised for an advertising community of consumers. In addition, the black educated, urban Drum audience in 1951 see themselves as having power to resist the education system which is characterised by racial segregation. In 2001, the young people regard the attainment of higher education in institutions of higher learning as valuable for black economic empowerment. Educators/therefore, need to teach learners the skills of reading a text critically, so that the learners are able to identify ways in which language choices channel their interpretation, and also the ways in which texts are linked to their socio-historical contexts. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2002.

Do You Read What I Read? A Case Study in the Translation of Dual-Readership Fiction

Becker, Eric 05 January 2012 (has links)
This thesis explores the components that are involved in the translation of a text that are interpretable by two distinct readerships. It examines: - theory that provides an understanding of dual-readership texts for children and adults; - examples of dual-readership texts, their translations, and analyses of these; - Bled by Daniel Danis and my English translation as a test case of a contemporary dual-readership source text and translation. The ultimate goal of this thesis is to shed light on what could be a new sub-domain of translation studies, namely, research on dual-readership translation. My translation of Bled provides insight into my own interpretation of dual-readership translation, namely, focusing on what is desirable and what is achievable in the translation of this type of text.

Disserta??o (Mestrado Profissional) ? Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Ci?ncias Humanas, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2018. / This thesis aims at attempting to analyze the indeterminate traits, nonconventional verse structures, and random constructions of poetic imagery detectable in the text Un coup de d?s jamais n?abolira le hasard (1897) by French symbolist poet St?phane Mallarm?, based on a 2015 ?transcreation? by Brazilian poet Haroldo de Campos. Given the complexities imposed by the research carried out here, the analysis mobilizes a set of theoretical frameworks which attempt to comprehend the inter-relationships among authorship, readership and the text itself, namely the notion of ?Open Work? put forward by Eco (2013) in his homonymous book published during the 1960s. The investigation shows how Mallarm??s poem contributes ? by means of its interchangeable strata, its constellation layout and its construction of a fragmentary mise-en-sc?ne ? to an equivocal meaning production and to the multiplication of possibilities of reading and poetic jouissance.

Čtenářská popularita postav v Harry Potterovi u žáků 6. ročníků ZŠ a studentů 1. roč. SŠ / Reader's Popularity of Characters in Harry Potter by Children of Primary School and Secondary School

Gazdačková, Michala January 2011 (has links)
The diploma thesis is focused on the problems of children readership and its main aim is to reveal the influence of the literary work that is very popular among readers on the interpretation of concrete literary text. By the means of research it tries to detect how the work Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling and its popularity affect the perception of literary text with respect to pupils of the 6th grade in primary school and students of 1st year in secondary school. The defined aim is studied mainly through reader's perception of literary characters in the concrete literary text; the main focus is aimed at perception of character hierarchy, creation of relationships with characters and perception of the main character of the work Harry Potter. Thanks to these findings it is possible to say whether the children readers are able to perceive the concrete literary text independently on the work by J. K. Rowling and its popularity or whether they are constantly under its influence and are not able to free themselves from its dominance. According to final discoveries it is possible to approach the work within the context of literary classes and overall literary education. Summarizing the results, the research has revealed that the influence of the phenomenon called Harry Potter and its popularity is quite...

Language competition: An economic theory of language learning and production

Wiese, Harald 04 June 2018 (has links)
This article employs game theory to contribute to sociolinguistics (or the economics of language). From both the synchronic and the diachronic perspective, we are interested in the conditions (of language learning and literary production) that make some languages dominate others. Two results are particularly noteworthy: (i) Translations have an ambiguous effect on domination. (ii) We offer three different explanations of how a past language like Latin or Sanskrit can develop into a standard for literary production.

Profil nakladatelství Paseka a jeho mediální obraz (1990-2018) / Profile of Paseka publishing house and its media image (1990-2018)

Šimková, Karolína January 2020 (has links)
The diploma thesis entitled Profile of the Paseka publishing house and its media image (1990-2018) aims to capture the image of the Paseka publishing house, which was founded by Ladislav Horáček more than thirty years ago and which has its firm place on the Czech book market. The first part of the thesis aims to acquaint the reader with the basic concepts and introduce him to the circumstances of the Paseka publishing house. Furthermore, this section describes the initial years of the publishing house, as well as projects and personalities that are inextricably linked with Paseka. The second part focuses mainly on the editorial policy of Paseky, which developed together with those who had just worked as the director of the publishing house. The third part of the work is focused on the current Paseka. Part of this chapter is acquaintance with the current editorial policy, important authors, publications and collaborators, but also with how the publishing house communicates with its readers. Finally, the final, practical part presents a quantitative analysis of selected media, which reported on Paseka in the period after the death of its founder Ladislav Horáček, ie between August 2015 and the end of 2019.

A Critique of Stanley Fish’s Reader-Response Reading of John Milton’s Paradise Lost

Gibson, Kristopher January 2021 (has links)
The essay critically examines Stanley Fish’s reader-response reading of Paradise Lost.In particular Fish’s main thesis that John Milton’s sole purpose in Paradise Lost is toeducate the reader on their position as fallen. The essay then examines two key claimsthat Fish employs to arrive at his conclusion, namely: (1) Fish’s notion of intendedreadership and authorial intent for Paradise Lost; and (2) Fish’s claims of readerresponse to Paradise Lost in two selected contexts (i) the reader response to Satan in thebeginning of Paradise Lost (ii) the reader response to an aspect of narration in ParadiseLost i.e. the poem’s epic voice. Based on the analysis of these two key claims the essayfinds Fish’s thesis unsubstantiated and in need of further argument.
